  • BEFORE you adjust your mowing deck because your mower is cutting your grass uneven or creating a step cut, check out these quick and easy tips first.
Step cutting is when you cut the lawn and it leaves ridges on the lawn surface creating an uneven look. Uneven lawns can be caused by many things such as deck or blade damage or the need to be re-leveled. Check out this video first before you start re-leveling your mower deck (or blade housing).

you put up a lot of good useful info. being in the trade, i'm surprised it's not hurting buisness. i do my own stuff and rarely do i need to look for help but there are many out there that no doubt do. for them i thank you. i do have a problem though. i'm fixing an old john deere 185 up. i've looked around everywhere for some direction on the double pulley on the deck. the bearings are toast. i can't find a clip or pin on it. the new part clearly has a pin hole though. i've beat that thing to death, heated it up and beat it some more. it's pressed in i've read but i've also seen a hammer knock valve guides loose that the press at work wouldn't. it's rusted pretty bad but has been cleaned up. if there something i'm over looking?

The difference in mowing height due to a low tire is even more when you add in the person's weight sitting on the mower.
Also I recently installed 2 new front tires, and my front deck height went up about a half inch due to the new front tire tread.
    Important to check these things!

Crazy thing happened to me. I have an 20 year MTD tractor and the 4 arms that attach the deck to the frame one came free the pin came off. That side of the deck would not lower. I could only cut on the highest level. Found that the arm was pinched between the part of the frame it hangs on and the frame it self. Not sure how long it was like that but it cuts a lot better. The whole deck was off which caused suction problems as well.
What now brought me to the video is a leaking needle and seat. Tried starting it wouldn't kick over. Finally got it to but smoked like crazy. Didnt run long. Hopefully no damage. But I'm in the process of fixing the old girl. Hope shes ok. Was a hand me down from my grandfather.
Thanks for your videos. You are fantastic!

We have a few more reasons why people's ride on mowers cut badly in the UK as we have direct collect machines.
    1) Some ride on mowers have a timing belt if they have twin blades and sometimes if the timing is slightly out they will hit each other and cut badly.
    2) The blades aren't sharp enough so they don't collect the grass efficiently.
    3) There are two brands of ride on mower sold in the UK, Countax and Westwood which have a sweeper collection system which is like a Agrifab towed sweeper collector but directly fitted onto the rear of the machine and PTO belt driven, if the plastic brush bristles are worn they won't collect the grass efficiently and your grass will look a mess.

I definitely didn't think you were crazy for saying tire pressure because that was actually my first guess. Why? Because I learned the hard way a few months back. My lawn tractor was cutting unevenly, so I looked up a tutorial on how to adjust the deck on my model of lawn tractor. Once I had finished leveling it only then did I notice that one of the back tires didn't look quite right. Once it had the proper amount of air again I had to turn around and then relevel the deck back to the way it was. You live and you learn.

I replaced the spindles, and installed new blades awhile back. Not such a hard job, a pain in the butt one for me. Getting too old. Started the rider and engaged the blades and low and behiold the belt broke. I thought not this time, I'd rather pay someone else to put a new one on. It also needed some electrical work done too. I had noticed the tires were a little low on pressure, so I aired them up. After mowing last week, I thought that the yard had never looked better. Never gave a thought about under inflated tires. It does make a huge difference. After watching this video, I now understand. That is the best tip I had ever seen. I watch videos for self help and have never seen anyone else cover this topic. By the way Steve, I'll stick with Miller Light. Unlike you and my two brothers, I'm a one beer man. Have a great day!

Now it cuts evenly thank you!

Some commented a on parts site ti put lock tight on it when repkacing. Think that will solve problem. Threads are not messed up. I move on very rugged terrain. Bouncing all over. Great hints and tips Steve. I watch your channel a lot. I also have the same equipment funny enough. I’m super impressed with my ridem mower. I have a Waren Blade for it 56” I have a 120 John Deere, and it handles the snow like a champ. I plow my neighbours drive and mine because they are joined. They are both very steep, but it pushes it up hill like its not even there. I put chains and weights on it, plus I sniped the treads for more grip. ( mostly for the grass, but I’m sure it helps in the snow as well) I’m in love with it. As a bonus I threw on a Aooga horn. 😂 Thanks so much for your help Steve. Love your channel.

I learned the hard way about tire pressure. If the front right tire pressure is low, the right side of the deck will be low AND the left side of the deck will be higher. Yes, all manual gauges are most accurate in the center of their range and 5 psi is that one's lowest. Digital gauges might be most accurate at center scale, too. I like a round air pressure gauge with a dial and needle over the pencil kind, but having the best range for the needed pressure is important.
Cool on showing blade tips aligning, no matter if 2 or 3. Now I know to check that now because I always check tire pressure before mowing and I'm seeing uneven cuts. And I'll check both tips to both other tips in case one blade is bent on one side. Both spindles are new so it's not that, but I do hit things with the blades now and then. I know about leveling the deck and making sure all 4 tires' pressure are correct first. Glad I watched this one! Thanks, Steve.

Before I started watching the video I knew you were going to say something on air pressure. Learned that when I was young dad showed me. Happened this summer with my old Craftsman tractor. Tire was low at the beginning of summer aired it up was good for awhile. Well went to mow and it was low again. The leak got worse. Now got to air it up every time before I mow. It's almost winter so not too worried about fixing it now. 3 of the tires are original to the tractor. It's 29 years old so due for new tires. I know I could put tubes in it but I rather not. See if I run over a nail and have a tube got to buy a new tube. No tube in the tire I can plug it. That's just me.

So Right Steve....my new mower...only 4 weeks old starts scalping on one side after I pulled the deck and reinstalled it. Why is it scalping I ask self? I grabbed the manuals thinking that I must have changed the adjustment when I reinstalled the deck....but I thought that I should watch your videos first. Saw this one and thought that it must be something less obvious than tire pressure, but I will check them before wrenching on the adjustment bolts. Sure enough! three tires at 22# when they should have been at 10# and one rear at almost no pounds. Fixed the tire pressure and no worries....cuts fine (just hoping that it was not a puncture on the tire....will find out in the morning when it has sat overnight. Thanks, Steve for the great videos as advice. Great beer tips too lol.

Thank you! You solved a problem I have had for the last few seasons. Bent blades from hitting high tree roots was the cause for uneven cuts. Replaced the blades. No more uneven cuts. I am now a subscriber to your videos!

The tire pressure is very important, combined with body weight. That 3 1/2 inches can be less with your body weight on the tractor. Bent blades will be uneven too. I just did my blades, put new ones on.

Well I be Damn... I was wondering why my MTD riding mower was cutting 3 inches lower on the right side...I had a Flat Right Rear tire... Thanks a lot for posting this video you saved me a ton of money... Now to find a video on how to fix a MTD riding mower rear tire...

I have an MTD, too. I actually found a replacement tire and wheel at Lowe’s. The old one wouldn’t hold any air.

This 2 year old video links to one that is 1 hour old?? Nice trick! I got some new rear tires for my DJ L120. They're 4 ply, not 2, 12 psi. Totally correct on the tire inflation, it's better to have a matching set that leaks about the same, only have to adjust the blade height...))

My son-inlaws D125 has a lot of hours on it and the aluminum trunion had worn grooves in it and it wouldn't sit on the rod properly. I had to stomp on the mower deck to get it to settle on the rod so I could adjust the deck height accurately. Luckily it is an inexpensive part pn GX21718.

A low pressure air gauge is critical to accurate tire pressure in these low pressure tires. I can not say that enough. Thanks for the tip about checking that the blades are level. I have never seen that anywhere else. Thanks!

I bought a used John Deere 42" cut a few weeks ago, mowed with it twice but didn't check the deck to see it it needed leveled, finally checked it today and it was way way off, there was 1 1/2 " difference from one side to the other. I used the three blocks of wood method, all cut to 2", lubed all moving parts associated with deck height. set cutting height to 2 1/2" and placed the blocks where they should be and adjusted as necessary. it cuts the grass a lot nicer now....blades seem to be good and not bent...I also moved the gauge wheels up a little higher. Thanks for all your videos and explaining things so well.

I just noticed that the rear or side hanging rods are facing the wrong way from what I have seen on other videos, the hook part of the adjustment rod is opposite of what they should be and they are at an angle. will this really matter as long as the deck can move up and down? Thanks again for all the great videos.

With getting a level cut, if something can go wrong, it will. And it's likely overinflated tires, bent blades, wonky spindles on a rusted out deck (held together by the paint), mis-matched tires, wrong wheels on the deck, or something you've never heard of, or imagined, that could affect an even cutting height and help you turn a green lawn into a "No Grass" zone.

I have found a large difference in deck level as a result of driver weight. I have had to adjust tyre pressure a bit to cope with heav drivers. This has the same effect on the tyre sidewalls as tyre pressure.

A few days ago I went out and bought a brand new Husqvarna 42 inch mower with the Briggs vtwin. Literally straight out of the box it was cutting uneven. Tried leveling the deck, still did it. Had a look underneath and where the two blades meet in the middle, there's probably a half inch difference in height. Bear in mind this machine is BRAND NEW with literally 3.9 hours it, I spoke to the Husqvarna dealer and he didn't want to know. Said as I had used it for a few hours, it's my problem now and won't take it back. I've had enough of that mower and it was never right out of the box.... He'd maybe consider taking it back for 20% less than I paid for as I had used it and he can't sell it new to another customer now. Waited 3 months for it to turn up from USA (I'm in Europe) I'm now left disappointed and gutted about a brand new machine I don't even want or like :(

Oh and checked tyre pressures as they came high from factory and the two blades in the still are not level in the middle :(

    • @mrscalliwag4152
      @mrscalliwag4152 2 роки тому

Update.... Took it back and there was clearly a 1/4 inch difference on right had blade from either bent spindle or deck. Official Husqvarna dealer refused to accept problem despite the machine having 4 hours run time. Gave me two options. Bring it back home, go through my insurance and call and an expert then take it court or lose 700 euros. I lost 700 as I couldn't be bothered with the hassle. Said it was probably my fault hitting something and the blades were fine too. I'm absolutely disgusted.
