She knew she and her views weren’t well liked by others so she didn’t care how people took the truths she spoke.....I wish all people were like Daria, honest, realistic, brutal, and uncaring.
Tbh being like that can even be tiring. Knowing the reality of your life and outwardly saying it can help you feel better, but it does get you depressed. I tried being a Daria in my life, I tired being all cynical and monotone, but that was just a defense mechanism deep down I had created to help with my growing dread at the fact that my life was not going the way I wanted it to. Soon enough I started judging the smallest things to the point where I questioned myself for doing alot of things I would judge others for. Then I guess I became quite relaxed in this judgement and even tried to just experience the present moment. Because to me, it seems like, Daria also does that. When confronted with reality, alot of us become cynical to look cool or whatnot. But the truth is that we are just as naive as the ones we judge, especially as teens.

I used to know a guy with personality like Daria. But his personality made him the most logical person in the neighborhood. Sometimes people see him as a cold-hearted guy, but it wasn't his fault he became like that tho. His neighbors were dang annoying, his boss underpaid him even after his years of loyalty, and his art career didn't work out. The guy's name was Squidward.
Jordan JoRdAn she'd probably make a really smart comment on student loan debt and deciding a career as a teenager and yet regret that decision later in life.
People like Daria don't go through college the same way they went through Highschool. She has changed the minute she finished that speech so it wouldn't be the same show. And also since in college there are more people like her who were outsiders in their school years she'd be spending time with them which would make her more social and less of a "Daria".
Daniel Ramsey I was in I think 5th grade when Daria first aired on TV, and I didn't understand it at the time, but I've recently gone back and watched the show and now i get it.
"I don't like to smile unless I have a reason" I've been keeping myself from saying those words in that order for years, it feels liberating when Daria does it so casually.
I rarely smile, but I do like smiling for photos, but the smile not always comes out. I know I don't have to but I like it when I can do it. There were situations where I was happy (like when I graduated from school and would finally get rid of some bad teachers and some annoying classmates) and also thinking I was smiling, but I was in fact looking kinda angry for some reason.

It would've been much better suited for Comedy Central. The reason it ended up on MTV is that Daria was a recurring character on "Beavis & Butthead", which had been turned into an MTV series after the shorts had made the rounds at animation festivals & then were shown as part of MTV's "animation festival" experiment, "Liquid Television". In other words, "Daria" was that rarity of rarities, a spin-off of a spin-off.

Believe it or not, Daria's cynicism was challenged throughout the show by the other characters who the show actually put care into exploring and showing that they also had depth. I did not fully understand just how great this show was as a teen because upon first watch, you are just entertained by Daria's one-liners and sharp observations, but if you watch it again you realize just how much all insight and growth all of the main characters had. I was really impressed with the way the writers evolved Daria, Helen, Jake, and especially Quinn when I watched the entire series again.
very true - she's bad-ass, but also flawed in that she pushes away people to avoid rejection;. Her arc throughout the show shows her taking lessons from her mother, Jane, Jodie & even her sister at times - it makes for very rewarding rewatching
Daria's cynism and defeatist attitude would only harm her in the long run, people need other people to live, Daria's peers and family were trying to get her to realize that, why? Because despite all the crap they give each other, they still care about Daria.
"My goal is to not wake up at 40. With the bitter realization that I've wasted my life, on a job I hate. Because I was forced to decide on a career in my teens" Actually this is everyone's dream
I agree with this 100% Only I realise that I wasted my life in the wrong job because I took my parents' advice and dropped Greek at school in favour of maths; I really wanted to be an archaeologist but you need Greek for that.
I found my passion at the age of 4. I didn't realize my passion until the age of 15. I didn't decide to turn my passion into a career until the age of 19. So, yeah. lol
i can safely say the majority of the human race feels this pressure at some point in their teens, you happened to have an idea of what you wanted to do, good for you so did some kids at my school, but the majority had no clue.
Same, I knew from about 13 and I'm 21 now (now if only I was willing to go through the amount of schooling it requires), but I know it's dumb to make kids choose because it's perfectly okay to not know what you want to do, to choose something then change your mind, etc. Some of us do know what we want to do, but yes we are a small minority.
I knew what I wanted to do with my life at age 16. I'm just not allowed to do it because its basically me lounging around the house playing video games and watching porn while someone else pays for everything while also leaving me the hell alone. One of my top favorite cartoons of all time. Daria is such a unique and lovable character for late 90s standards. It's so funny to think that she was originally from Beavis and Butt Head. ·_·
@@member-berry-bonbons1124 Honestly the fact that it's in the same universe as Beavis and Butt Head is so crazy because Beavis and ButtHead are so insane and the chaotic element in their show is almost the polar opposite of everything here.
Story Time: The father of a friend in high school was a psychologist. I called her one day, and he picked up (while in the middle of playing Tomb Raider). We talked for several minutes, and he said, "You remind me of Daria." I didn't know how to feel about that. The next time the show aired, I told my mother what he said and asked her to watch an episode with me. She had never seen the show before. Five minutes into the episode, she looked at me and said, "Yep. That's you, all right."
The psychologists I meet usually tell me that I need to be locked away. Not a particularly nice statement so I decided to give them a taste of their own medicine. Anyway, I have recently installed chains and shackles into my basement walls
MTV was always what's known as a generational channel. Each decade they would reflect off of in order to appeal to the generation at the time. In the 80s it was all about the music, so they became the Hit Music Video Channel, in the 90s it was all about fans of MTV, so they made cartoons dedicated to that. This show, Beavis and Butthead, The Head all had elements of the original MTV generation. 2000s was all about reality shows and now 2010s its the SJW capital of the world.

They should have put this show on adult swim, especially during my highschool years (2006-2010). All we had at the time were king of the hill reruns. While KotH was a great show, it wasn't meant for growing teenagers, giving us (somewhat) unrealistic views and expectations about adulthood. Daria WAS a growing teenager, and had wittier, better, more justifiable use of cynicism, whose quotes could have changed my world for the better. But sadly, this show belongs to viacom, so that could never happen. And in a bizzarre way, this show gets...too real..for me to watch as i get older. I hate that some people push teens to grow up way too fast. Telling them to behave and so on is one thing but if you're 15 and they already tell them to start planning on what you want to do with your life is another. Let them have fun for a while.
I mean, it's nice to have an idea of what you want to do, but teens shouldn't feel pressured to have the next fifty or so years intricately planned out by the time they graduate high school. People don't always know what they want to do with their lives when they're that young. Sometimes, they don't find their calling until they're in their 20s, 30s, 40s, even 50s, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's never too late to figure out what you want to be.
I really don't get the concept behind becoming what you want to be.. Wouldn't it make more sense to tell kids to figure out what they are good at, and do that for a living. Also probably should do some career training in highschool.. be a damn good idea. What you want, and what you'll realistically get are entirely two different things, and if your not in a career your good at odds are your not going to go far with it.
you know what's even more fucked up? most of the students I went to high school with only joined clubs like The Beta Club or other college type clubs because of a popularity contest. They could care less what it was about. Plus there were always fights on who got to be president or treasurer or whatever. What's even more fucked up is in order to join the beta club, you have to be very smart, such as always making the honor roll or something. And the people that ran it were idiots only doing it to get noticed, and could care less about how it could help them later in life.
Beavis and Butthead was a lot smarter then it looked. The whole point of the humor was to be subversive just like the Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park. Daria's character was just as subversive, just with a different, more feminist angle.
+zyxwut321 Do not insult Daria's intelligence, even though it took her 8 years to graduate high school. She was not a joiner and despised any and everything that pandered to the masses. I watched Daria back when I was in middle school because it was the first time a main character was like me in terms of personality (and looks now that I think about it). Daria has to be one of the best written female characters ever, she had such overwhelming depth its crazy.

@@LowCountryMatt you are so right, that was the shows strongest part was watching her grow and influence others to be better.

Daria wasn’t dry or cynical she was realistic af and the world wasn’t ready for it. She called everyone out on their bullshit and refused to change so that people wouldn’t judge her.
@@killme5630 See I think the problem is you were unaccepting of your life and trying to fight it. She accepts her life for what it is and does away with the pointless act of romanticizing life. She just wants others to face reality and accept that everyone’s life sucks in some way.

People like Daria don't go through college the same way they went through Highschool. She has changed the minute she finished that speech so it wouldn't be the same show.
I just watch the show for Jake honestly. The dude is hilarious!
Daria's cynism and defeatist attitude would only harm her in the long run, people need other people to live, Daria's peers and family were trying to get her to realize that, why? Because despite all the crap they give each other, they still care about Daria.
Quinn really only changes after the first movie, then develops even more over the 5th season. In seasons 1-4 she doesn't really develop at all.

MTV was always what's known as a generational channel. Each decade they would reflect off of in order to appeal to the generation at the time. In the 80s it was all about the music, so they became the Hit Music Video Channel, in the 90s it was all about fans of MTV, so they made cartoons dedicated to that.

Daria helped an entire generation without access to internet to realize: "I'm not alone (with my POV).."
all hail Daria, the great leader ^^
I never watched Daria, but I have heard of it and started to watch clips of it in UA-cam.And I have to say I like it, Daria is so real and sensible.Lol.She just says the truth!
classeychicforever aw man. get that DVD box set NOW
the show is great for comedy, but there are real moments that hit home and stay with you long after the episode is over
HalfbreedTrini Lol.I have heard great things about it, so I am gonna get the DVD set! I'm excited to watch it.Seems like some real life lessons!
You should watch it, you can watch it for free on kisscartoon. It's a great show.
classeychicforever you’ll love it Daria herself , her friend Jane (most awesome real girls you’ll ever know even though they’re fictional lol) , the crazy teachers, the parents and much more ! Truly a one of a kind show
I’m sooo late on this but the show is on Hulu
No. 2 should be no.1, what she said was just too real. Hits me hard.
“Do you always talk to your computer?”
(Deadpan) “Only when the refrigerator is mad at me..”
She's what Velma WANTS to be
I don't like to smile unless I have reason..GOD YES.
MechanicalLady Yeah it drives me nuts too. People say I look pissed off when I am perfectly happy 90 percent of the time. The idea that your facial expressions should be modified to avoid other people's negative judgement is farcical and perfectly absurd. I feel silly if I go around with a huge grin on my face. And it hurts after a while.
Jim Reilly true but at the same time if you go around with a frown, don't be surprised if people aren't as warm to you
Seconded
Very true for me
@@troywright359 um maybe ppl aren't always feeling that warm. They don't actually want you around. Smiles can be fronts... Let that sink
A really good one that wasn't added (would have put it in place of the "you're so shallow it loops back around to being depth) was when her dad got a heart sttack, everyone had to take care of him at home (shoutout to Quinn in that episode, btw. She thought her father was gonna die and began studying to become a doctor and really took it seriously for the duration of the episode) and she told off a couple of radio hosts who kept pestering her
"Raisins?"
"Raisins are nature's candy! :D"
"Then why do they have to cover them with chocolate to sell them at the movies?"
Oh fuck, I didn't think of that
2:14 good question daria
one of my favorite shows ever. have the complete series on DVD and am getting a tattoo of the sick sad world logo they used on the show haha . die hard fan here .
marie clover Same!!!!
Hell yeah. I know I'm planning on getting one of Trent's tattoos when I have the money at some point (the one on his forearm if that makes sense).
This show was straight to the point and honest
I like how they put a fair amount of effort into Jane's paintings
I've only ever seen bits and pieces of this series when it was on, but what I do remember that I enjoyed it for being smart in its cynicism and being satirical without being mean spirited. I'm gonna have to give this show a serious watch.
