I have to agree on this. It's amazing what Axe is doing on the new records, one of the best drummers in the world. But Lopez... is an other dimension. And this is one of the songs where the difference is clear.
Over the past 4 or 5 years Opeth has become my 2nd all time favorite band of any music genre. There is something strangely relaxing about their music, almost ASMR like. I've dozed off to My Arms, Your Hearse a few times, and Orchid gives me an out of body feelin. There is not a single waisted note in their songs, nor is there a single filler track on any of their albums. Mikael has such a ferocious vocal distortion, but yet his singing is graceful, and he speaks with such a deep and somber tone. Opeth is that band that very few bands are: an experience
Almost 2 years ago, I was introduced to Opeth by a UA-camr who recommended them in a video which, to this day, I’m still trying to find, he recommended this song as a perfect song to show non metalheads how good metal can be, I was already into metal, you know, the more traditional stuff like Megadeth and Slipknot, but when I first listened to that intro, it took me like a week to get passed those first seconds, once I did, I listened to the whole song, and it changed my world, you wouldn’t expect someone who is just getting into metal to listen to Opeth as one of their first couple of bands, but you know what? Fucking worth it, to this day, they still are my favorite band of all time, there’s just one artist that I like as much, and that’s Zappa, but apart from him, few bands have made such an impact in my life, long live to Opeth!!!! And long live to one of the greatest guitarists alive, Mikael Akerdfelt!!!!!

I totally agree! I hate most death metal because of the constant blastbeats and growling, and I was really sceptical when my brother wanted to show me Opeth because I thought they were just another death metal band. I loved it almost instantly. The way they blend prog rock and death metal is just perfect, and Mikael's growing is actually fucking awesome to me, he's the only growling vocalist I like
yup same exactly here for me , Mikael is the only vocal i listen to that growls now , and literally no one else in the world could do growl then switch to clean and play LEAD guitar in the same damn time , he's so damn talented , best ever
The only other death metal band I like besides opeth is dethklok, you should listen to dethalbum 1. It has Lopez's hero gene hoglan on drums (gene took over for Lopez on the opeth video for the grand conjuration because he was sick) and also the guitar and growling vocals sound like no other metal band.
The outro is so hypnotic. This song is definitely one of the best masterpieces Opeth ever made. It sounds great no matter of what on every live I saw so far.
I was at this show. I was a few rows from the front at stage left. A superb rendition of my favourite ever song. This is ‘the’ best Opeth lineup for me.
At that time, those insane fast tempos(live) would make them look like straight up death metal bands in terms of energy! This rush and drag adds an "insanity" factor which suits death metal in general!
I really like Lopez's choice of tempo throughout this gig. He increases it in certain parts where it contributes nicely to the intensity of the song, while in other parts he actually slows down the tempo compared to the studio recording - for example, the opening riff in Masters Apprentices feels much chunkier while most of A Fair Judgment feels more profoundly sentimental. In both cases these slight adjustments improve the songs IMO, to the extent that I don't even listen to the studio versions of these tracks anymore
After one million times watching this performance I finally realize that they actually skipped one part at the end because in the studio version they play that last epic pattern part 3 times with Mikael playing that sinister riff and then they play for the last time both guitarists that pattern. And here they play twice before going to the last part. Anyway, I could watch the last 3minutes until the end of times.
Meshuggapeth Fredrik, maybe. Axe, nope. He is a human metronome, but Lopez was a drummer. I compare this version to the Wacken 2015 version, and damn... Even giving Mikael's growls a pass, it lacks the energy and adrenaline that Lopez gave it. 10 years later, I still think Lopez was better than Axe...
branlopgar Lopez was great, but he couldn’t have pulled off some of the newer Opeth fan favorites like “The Devil’s Orchard” or “A Fleeting Glance”. Axe’s drumming is hypnotic and brutal at the same time, adding new styles and sounds to Opeth’s texture . Lopez does though deserve credit for adding heaviness to Opeth’s sound beginning on My Arms, Your Hearse. His playing on the Deliverance/Damnation and Ghost Reveries albums deserve widespread recognition for they worked so well with Opeth’s style, especially when mixed in with Mendez’s excellent bass playing
Posting this after watching Opeth live for my first time in the Evolution XX tour… I always liked this song since I first listened to it, but know after experiencing it live my life changed and I believe it is the best fucking song ever written 😭😭 What a masterpiece
Peak OPETH. As much as I love their newer material, but this, this line up, the music they produced at that time 🤘… no other band could or will match it
I'm amused by all the comments comparing Axenrot to Lopez. Saying one of them is better than the other is kinda like saying Stephen Hawking is smarter than Albert Einstein. Who cares? They're both geniuses!
This is one of the greatest performances I have ever had the privelege to have seen, even if only in video. I've only recently gotten into Opeth, and wow, Opeth is changing my perspective on a lot of things.
This might sound like an obvious remark about the man who literally wrote the drum parts for this song, but no other drummer has ever played this song better. For all the imperfections in his live performances - particularly the rushed tempos - his feel and swing, along with his sense of dynamics was impeccable. Even the drum sound was a thing of beauty; loose but deep snare, crisp hi-hats and cymbals. Axe had a beautiful drum sound too, but could never quite nail this one as well.
Is it okay if I cry? Because godaaaamn this is so freaking incredible!!!! It's brilliant! Never before I heard this much brutalism combined with amazing tearjerking clean passages. Man, I'm so happy I'm living in a time where this band exists haha... Wouldn't you say so?

I was a few rows from the front at stage left.
A superb rendition of my favourite ever song.
This is ‘the’ best Opeth lineup for me.
Man, Peter Lindgren and Martin Lopez, it never got better than this
Exactly! that´s what I´m talking about
nah, i i prefer Axe than Lopez, and Freidrik is awesome too, and the adition of the keyboard really added a dimention to the band
Axe is very good, great drummer but lopez was insane for me!
Yeah, Axe is a tighter and a little bit better drummer, but both are fabulous.
Fredrik Akesson spoiled me with his metal solos and licks
Peter es una bestia
4:37 The drummer is really pushing the tempo here. It gives the section an energy that's distinct from the studio version.
The whole song is much faster here really. I don’t like it as much as the studio version. Still a great performance and impressive as fuck
Opeth is rarely band that doing songs in live more fantastic than studio version
Its fantastic AF!
That goes ridiculously hard
That great era of Lopeth is sadly over, but the legacy stays with those of us who still cherishes every bit of it... ❤
2 years now still cant fucking stop listening this song
I saw this lineup live, man they were great. Still are for sure, but Lopez... My neck still hurts from the memory of this song, and Demon of the Fall.
Wow the drumming is unbelievably good
this is the best era of opeth hands down.At the top of their game, creative and live beasts.
This was peak Opeth. This lineup.
They sound amazing live!!
+MasterOfJustice not so great any more, well Mikael cant do the growls so well any more.
+Rob Greene His growls lost power and brutality, but everything else is still great
Yep have seen the multiple times. They are amazing live
@@robgreene5666let em age man they still sound sick. Y’all sound just like all those Guns haters ☠️
Probably the best song in entire history of music.
We all miss Lindgren and Lopez so much...
Deep Jyoti but Fredrik and Axe are better
Lopez' biggest contribution to Opeth was to add the jazzy feel of the drums. That was him. Axe never had the jazz feel and groove that Lopez has.
I'm sure they miss being in Opeth as well....
Posting this after watching Opeth live for my first time in the Evolution XX tour… I always liked this song since I first listened to it, but know after experiencing it live my life changed and I believe it is the best fucking song ever written 😭😭 What a masterpiece
I had this on DVD, but I lost it some years back. The best Opeth era
Peak OPETH. As much as I love their newer material, but this, this line up, the music they produced at that time 🤘… no other band could or will match it
Best live performance of this song ever recorded.
Hands down one of the best metal songs of all time right here
I'm amused by all the comments comparing Axenrot to Lopez. Saying one of them is better than the other is kinda like saying Stephen Hawking is smarter than Albert Einstein. Who cares? They're both geniuses!
Axe never played this song properly.
@Zedrik Allen here's the way I look at it. Axe is better in the studio. Lopez is better live.
Yeah but still, Lopez is better
yeah but lopez is better
I'm always awed by his growls
Holy shit this was amazing, I can see why people consider Opeth one of the best
So simple, yet so brutal!
I don't know why, but I still prefer listening to this live version instead of the album one. Amazing :)
Probably because the album version sounds almost rigid next to this live version. Lopez really let loose live.
Yeah most live versions of songs aren't as good because the vocalist normally fucks up.... Especially in prog.... But mikael never does anything wrong
This one simply outclass anything that is studio recorded.
I have never seen a more emotional metal drummer in my life. He is great 🤘
best version by far, amazing Lopez as a conductor of the song
Is it okay if I cry? Because godaaaamn this is so freaking incredible!!!! It's brilliant! Never before I heard this much brutalism combined with amazing tearjerking clean passages. Man, I'm so happy I'm living in a time where this band exists haha...
Wouldn't you say so?
someone wrote "The best outro ever written"...this is exactly what I wanted to say. First heard this song in 2002, it`s been 16 years and I am still listening to this song once in a while and there is still no better outro! Thumbs up who is also finger banging the drums on the table/chest/leg/whatever to mimic the outro!
Arturs Krastins Agalloch Falling Snow probably has better guitar work in the outro imo
@@omegjonneboy4027 I will listen to that, however I was referring to the drum part of the outro in this song
Best Opeth line-up
The last breakdown can cure cancer!
Such a DEVILISH song I ever hear from any metal bands (I LOVE IT) 🔥🔥🔥
Esta es una de las mejores canciones de Opeth. Posiblemente la mejor.
Luckiest creatures to witness the epic-ness of Opeth while Pete and Lopez were knocking it out of the park!!
This song is bonkers. Perfection
No wonder this is their most played song live! It's so fucking good! The changes are incredible! :D
I like how Lopez starts speeding like mad and everyone has no choice but to follow.
Best line Up ever!!! Full power and majesty!!
Wow, I was here, must have been 21 years old at the time, happy days!
