What I love most about him is he feels no need to be front and center and the attention. He brings whatever a particular song needs from him. Amd he does it 150%. He can pour so much emotion into such simple melodies, one note at a time. Or he can absolutely murder the guitar with a face melting shredfest.
I've always thought his "Blah blah blah" speech at the RHOF was very much like his guitar playing - telling a story with "notes". At 7:24 it reminds me of him saying how he had to sustain notes and be creative with the guitar to have a blended tone to compensate for Geddy and Neil when those nuts are going off all over the place.

He does get overlooked because he plays alongside arguably the most beloved rhythm section in rock history, but he's not underrated in the least.
Alex in any other band would be on the front of every guitar magazine. He just kind of gets less spotlight in Rush because the two fellers he plays with are also in the stratosphere.
Dude c'mon...it's because they are Canadian and the American's can't handle it. I saw an American top 100 best guitarist list and they put Alex about 15th behind Kurt Cobain! LMFAO!
There's so many things that make Rush a great band and the proof is how they're able to play so many different instrumentals (usually 10 minutes long) and keep listeners engaged & wanting more when its over !
They follow musical construction theory... theme. Modify theme. Variation. New theme. Modification. Bridge. Opposing theme amd variation. Back to 2nd theme. New theme. Variation. Return to the original theme modified again. Variation. End. It's cohesive and follows a structure like a story you can follow. Each theme is repeated a few times so you learn it. And you don't get bored because ot progresses.
I agree with you about Alex. He 's one of the most underrated rock guitarists ever. And he's one of the greatest ever. Rush's music has his signature all over it.
Everyone rightfully praises YYZ and La Villa Strangiato, but this is hands down my favourite instrumental track they ever laid down. It is a pure groove from start to finish, all three of them locked in tight, and this is the absolute best version of it.
This is one of my favorite live performances! Everyone is on fire here, but Geddy's bass playing is my favorite part of this song. You can hear and see why he is widely considered one of the best rock bassists of all time! As for Alex, I agree that he is often underrated when it comes to musician polls and media acclaim (although musicians know how good he is!). Geddy has expressed how he also feels Alex is underrated by rock critics in a passage in his memoir, 'My Effin' Life'. He praised Alex, and during their talk during Geddy's book tour in Toronto, he and Alex described how they work together: Geddy said Alex is a "spontaneous genius', coming up with amazing guitar riffs that Geddy has to record so that Alex could listen back and re-learn what he had just played off of the cuff! As for Geddy, Alex described him as a someone who 'needs to know everything that is wrong before he knows that it's right' and that he goes through a certain methodical, creative process. Meanwhile, I recently read an article where Neil describes Geddy's playing as "methodical and passionate." I think the same could be said for Neil's playing, which is why they were such a tight rhythm section. For a future reaction, I suggest the live version of 'Where's My Thing? Here It Is' Live from Dallas. It features both a bass solo and a drum solo.
Total masterpiece. There's so much going on technically despite them making it sound simple. Alex's guitar soars over the bass and drums in the most unlikely and yet natural sounding way. Mmmm mm mmm.
One of my all time favorite RUSH tunes. They’re so great that they don’t even need lyrics. All of RUSH instrumentals are sheer perfection and genius. Love the Data shirt! Agree that Alex has always been overlooked. Taking absolutely nothing away from Neil or Geddy, I do think it's a bit harder to stand out as a guitar player given the spotlight the instrument always gets an the number of amazing talents who've played it. Alex crafts some excellent guitar parts in support of the songs, and always delivers an interesting solo, whether it be soaring, weird, fun or beautiful. But he can also flat-out shred when he wants to.
I agree with your observation about Alex and his lack of recognition. He plays guitar with a top rated drummer and top rated bassist and I have never heard anybody say "Rush would be a great band if they could find a better guitarist". All three of these guys are amongst the elite players of their respective instruments.

I saw this tour about a week before this was recorded for the Time Machine DVD. It might be my favorite of the 19 times I saw this magnificent band. Moving Pictures in it's entirety is hard to top. They sounded as good as any time I saw them.
I saw them 17 times in Kansas City, always the best sounding and most well performed concerts of the year. The only shows that ever came (VERY) close for me were the Pink Floyd stadium tours.

You used to find Alex’s name very commonly on lists called “Most Underrated Guitarists.” This performance showcases so well their approach after Neil re-engaged following his sabbatical. They told themselves it would be about having fun and they certainly followed through: the chickens, the washer/dryers, the groupie dolls at Alex’s pedal board, Stewie on Neil’s drum kit… just three guys enjoying themselves and delivering their brand of rock to people who wanted to be drenched in it. 🙏🏼
I’m sorry you could not have seen them live. There was always an wave of emotion and energy when the show is about to start and the house lights go down. Their later tours , they were three hour long spectacles with no opening band. Probably because bands said “ no! We are not going in before rush. The fans will charge the stage and throw us off. “ Jim Belishi had a tv show where he alluded to that. His band was playing and the crowd booed them off. He walked away and said “ you’d think we were opening for Rush!”

No one brings it on an instrumental like the Holy Triumvirate!!! Alex is indeed the "middle child" of this band. Thus is definitely in my top 4 Rush instrumentals. It's placement is purely dependent on my mood for at day for places 2 through 4.
Rush i saw them in Stockholm once. Incredible band. Back in the 70 i had two LP:s with the band...The first was simply "Rush" and the second "Fly by night". They sounde differnt back then. Great reaction. Thank you. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.❤

Being a 3 piece Alex has had to not only fill lead guitar duties, but also occasionally has had to be a rhythm guitarist when Geddy's keyboards have taken the lead. When you think of his contribution over their long career it's just mind blowing
I took a friend of mine to his first Rush show in Baltimore, time machine tour, and he was blown away by this instrumental. He was like what was that song I just heard, and I had to remind him it was just an instrumental called leave that thing alone. He was shocked.
It was The Tim 2:44 e Machine tour. They played all of moving pictures live! Awesome show! Played all of Moving Pictures because it eas the 30th anniversary of the alblum! One of the best tours I've seen!

This is in my top 3 studio Rush albums. If you decide to do an "entire album reaction", I highly recommend this one. Not a bad track on it, and the production is top tier - you can hear everything.
Each member is so good on their instruments that their instrumentals are just as good as their songs with lyrics. For some the instrumentals are their favs.

I caught the last show of that tour, in George, WA. I remember that Geddy was so happy and having a blast. This track was definitely the highlight.

I took a friend of mine to his first Rush show in Baltimore, time machine tour, and he was blown away by this instrumental. He was like what was that song I just heard, and I had to remind him it was just an instrumental called leave that thing alone. He was shocked.
I saw this tour in Baltimore MD AWESOME! would an understatement, they played the entire Moving Pictures album and many others
It was The Tim 2:44 e Machine tour. They played all of moving pictures live! Awesome show! Played all of Moving Pictures because it eas the 30th anniversary of the alblum! One of the best tours I've seen!

Not true. Urban legend that's been said about every combination of guitarists you can name. However, Alex is definitely one of the top rock guitarists ever.

This is in my top 3 studio Rush albums. If you decide to do an "entire album reaction", I highly recommend this one. Not a bad track on it, and the production is top tier - you can hear everything.
Each member is so good on their instruments that their instrumentals are just as good as their songs with lyrics. For some the instrumentals are their favs.
