    It's not the over-the-top nostalgia that's wrong with the book. It's the tactless way it just references them for no reason other than fanservice; It doesn't develop anything in the story.

    I enjoyed the CG, I enjoyed the action, I enjoyed the references and the video game references, and the acting was okay. But the only thing that didn't fully make me love the movie was the story. I don't know why, but I just don't like the whole evil corporation trying to take over the world and the small group of teens/kids trying to stop them and save the ones they love from them and stuff. I don't know, some parts of the movie and the adventures I liked, but the main story wasn't really for me.

    • @michaelchan9874
      @michaelchan9874 6 років тому +2

      Yeah. I also felt that the story was too basic. Very unplausible that a bunch of teens who games a lot would know how to run a half-trillion dollar business let alone how to make it benefit the world further rather than making things worse. The coporation character is also too much of an idiot to have been the CEO of it, no chance.

    • @sandywolfr26
      @sandywolfr26 6 років тому +1

      Michael Chan well the fact is the guy who died was looking for someone who was like him. And can understand his mistakes. And yea they are kids but they do got lawyers and that other guy who can advise them. Plus we are talking about video game nerds. One hacking feeds and who do mods. As for the CEO, he knew how to make money. Not play video games. And he did what other companies do. Employ people to get the work done. The experts.

    Something this movie does right is change the context of the challenges from the novel. The challenges in the book are about Wade being rewarded for knowing a lot about pop-culture and video games. The movie makes the challenges more introspective, exploring Halliday's psyche, personal regrets, and alienation.
    Also, in the book, the romance did take longer to bloom, but it also involves some severe stalker behavior and book-Wade is a smarmy, entitled creep.

    I feel like too many people think that the 80's nostalgia is just for the sake of a current trend and has no point, but these same people do not understand this book was written before the 80's nostalgia trend started and that the 80's references make complete sense to the CONTEXT of this story. Halladay was a huge 80's nerd despite not being born in the 80's and made his contest based around that because he wanted his successor to be like him, kinda like Willy Wonka. So yeah, it's 80's but its 80's for a REASON, not just for views. Why NOT go all out in this futuristic VR world?? Can't you people let people have FUN?? I'm with Korey on this one.

    Is it just me, or is this becoming the Corey show? Don’t get me wrong, I think Corey is hilarious and I always look forward to his take on a film. There’s no other reviewer that I’ve seen that brings the comedy like he does. But if I would criticize the show, I miss hearing Martin. And now that they have even more people on the shows, they need to balance the time each person gets to state their opinions. Corey hogs the platform sometimes.

    Just got back from seeing it in RPX. It had some Roller-Coaster fun moments, but I'm surprised Spielberg didn't make the dystopian society feel more important. I didn't see anyone even slightly concerned that Virtual Reality has taken over. It seemed like every single person was just wanting the damn Easter Egg.
    The 2 Scenes that were worth the Price of Admission were the insane Race near the beginning with the Akira bike. It was shot very well for an animated sequence. ALSO... without spoiling... a certain CLASSIC MOVIE that is featured as a Level. Holy Shit, that was insane seeing it on the big screen. The MUSIC and all. It even had that grainy 70's look still but with characters interacting with the Movie Set.
    I would give it a Matinee. I wanted it to be a Full Price.
    I saw it with 2 friends tonight. All of us grew up on all the games featured. 1 of my friends REALLY HATED IT, the one I expected to like it the most... during the movie he was saying "Kill Me". He even gave it a "1/10" after haha.

    For a movie that drowns itself in references, to include the obscure and Anime, I found myself wishing that there had been more heavy hitters in the final battle. There should have been at least three or four other people in that literal SEA OF GAMERS who'd also been playing long enough to have access to special super characters or commissions. Maybe a Voltron or a Megazord or a Jaeger. After all...that would have been the time to use it. I myself found myself REALLY hoping for a Big O, as THAT would have been amazing to see visualized on the big screen. He's made for the big fights after all and would have made far more sense than the Iron Giant...................but I knew in all reality that it wasn't going to happen. The Big O was a long shot if ever there was one. But with all of that Spielberg money, you'd think they could have bought at least a few more heavy-hitter properties for the war scene.

    I honestly liked the movie more than the book since the book has some issues and I honestly don't mind all of the changes to the plot and characters, not a perfect movie but it's more a improvement from the book.

    The two things I hate the most in theaters... D-Box Motion seats & 3D. Ready Player One deserves to be viewed in the biggest & loudest theater possible, preferably an Imax theater. I'm never using D-Box again because it just feels like someone is kicking your chair. The theater I went to had such a nice sound system that I felt the vibrations from my immobile seat alone. 3D movies need to die and rot in a grave. Imax is where it's at baby, but I really don't like that digitally transferred shit... I agree with Christopher Nolan to a point... go back to film (especially for legit Imax). I love watching Nolan''s movies in Imax because he truly knows how to utilize it... M:I - Ghost Protocol took a page from Nolan's book, and they succeed.

    ......MAAAAAAN I WISH YOU GUYS WOULD'VE PARTNERED UP WITH DOLLA SHAVE CLIQ BEFORE I FOUND THE SOLUTION. I couldn't shave without getting hair bumps. For years I was a black man tormented with a pizza face. Those days are long gone thanks to clippers and blue aqua velvet. I would love to give this a try but......I'm terrified to go back to razors.

    Everybody complaining about how this movie is overblown with references, no, Family Guy overdoes it with the references, Jason Freidberg and Aaron Seltzer/Marlon Wayans make movies that are nothing but references. At least with Ready Player One, some references are quick and blink if you miss it, with Family Guy, Seltzerberg and Marlon Wayans it's nothing but poor recreations of the things they reference and do it for the sake of referencing it.
    Also, I'm surprised y'all didn't mention TJ Miller as i-R0k but then again that probably would've brought Goodwin's rating down a bit.

    Can somebody explain to me why they drove the van to pick up Artemis after she escaped from the corporation. All it did was let the bad guys know they're location. She was of no use then since her character in oasis died, the bad guy had no idea where she was, if she just went into some random building she would have been safe. Driving the van to her was pointless

    Watchmen is a good example of why heavy deviation AWAY from the book doesn't work. the stuff cut for time like Night Owl's book, and the comic and the space monster ext. is the soul purpose that book works. it's how the world of Watchmen becomes interesting.
    the film replaced that with ultra-violence and that's why it was so flat.
    where adaption work the best is when a script writer and director work smart. LotR, Spiderwick Chronicles (it might be a forgettable movie, but the translation from book to screen was perfect) Jessica Jones, ext.
    sounds like this gets a pass cuz Spielberg is important. that's not really much to go on. what's next Francis Ford Coppola gets the film rights to a NYT best seller set in the 70's?

    this movie kinda came out ahead of it's time by a few years, if this came out after meta verse promotion it would've been more digestible imo (i probably picked up on a third of the nostalgia so it didnt really distract me, but when ready player one first came out i wasnt interested until recently)

    It felt like a near miss opportunity to make a great movie. A little punch up wouldn’t kill anyone. T.J. Miller delivers the first laugh way too late, and he feels out of place as the only real nerd. H could have been funny. The rest of the team is introduced out of nowhere, when they easily could have been legends of the Oasis in their own ways. The main character is the best man for the job in exposition only. The challenge felt easy too. The sixers were not the endless horde and daunting force they could have been.
