- Relying on international recruitment to plug gaps in the health and social care workforce is “unsustainable”, trust leaders said, as figures showed health and care worker visas have more than doubled in a year.
A rise in non-EU immigration to the UK in the year ending June 2023 was mainly driven by migrants coming for work and primarily attributed to those coming on health and care visas, the Office for National Statistics said.
Home Office figures published on Thursday show 143,990 health and care worker visas were granted in the year ending September 2023, more than double the 61,274 for the year to September 2022.
The top three nationalities on these visas are Indian, Nigerian and Zimbabwean, the Home Office said.
Immigration lawyer Harjap Singh Bhangal explains that immigrants filled much-needed jobs ‘left vacant by the British public’ to keep the economy going.

Brits will do jobs that allow them to buy homes and have a family. THAT should be the absolutely baseline minimum reward of going to work.

Completely wrong. Hardly anybody is on job seekers. Unemployment is at a historically low level. You do have an issue of some people needing support because of ill health but often that is people in their middle age upwards and their usefulness in the labour market is limited.

Oh Harjap don’t talk rubbish. Businesses want immigration to keep wages down. They’ve always denied it in the past now they openly admit it. Fruit picking is seasonal in the main. You can’t list that in the permanent figures as seasonal workers come and go they’re not permanent residents as these figures relate to. British people would do this work but the farmers like people they can pay peanuts to and charge to live in on site accommodation to pay them even less. Residents here with homes are not wanted by them. You are part of the problem creating a race to the bottom where wages stay low.
It's the exact same thing in Canada. All politicians, no matter what party, are owned by businesses and corporations. And businesses and corporations want cheap, exploitable, labor so the government has opened the floodgates to bring in hundreds of thousands of immigrants. It doesn't matter that we have a housing crisis, healthcare crisis, and cost of living crisis all of which will only be made worse by their actions. They absolutely do not care about the average Canadian.

Yup this , also the standards changed when it came to housing workers .
Before you got a tied cottage with a small garden.
Now you get a moldy caravan to yourself if you're lucky , at worst you are forced to live in a single room with four to six other people you can't understand.

But if you restrict immigration wages will rise and due to the lack of housing the price of housing will increase and then the wages won't go far enough. Wage rises are not actually very important. The cost of living is what is important. If wages go up and so does inflation, and so does rents and house prices, then nobody gets anywhere. You need to build houses, and build council houses like after the war, then working class people have places to live affordably. The UK does face a population problem. Family sizes have declined for generations. And we have a lot of old people. The UK does need immigrants to solve this population problem. Or our population will decline i.e. Japan. And that causes a lot of issues.
@@khar12d8 building more houses won't fix the problem , you can easily mass produce brutalist housing in mass produce towns, the equivalent of the human zoo .
But I doubt treating humans like rats in a cage will result in lots of babies being born or people being happy.
Even less if none of the people working together can speak the same language to communicate.
Plus all the wrong houses will be built , they will build nothing but 3 or 4 bedroom houses but what's needed is cheaper houses for singles or couples.

Why not , highly skilled migrants don’t owe uk anything. These are skilled people trained in their respective countries. UK did not spend a single penny on their education etc. infact these highly skilled people pay a lot of charges to enter UK. What I have seen is, these skilled people are quick to understand how the system works in UK. Once they see there is no growth here (just high taxes) , they migrate to a capitalistic country. They realise quickly that uk is built for people with generational wealth.

We have had heavy HEAVY migration since 2001 at the very least, why are there so many jobs not being taken if we have so many foreign nationals in the country now? I thought that was their bread and butter?

If the household has 2 kids they won’t even generate enough tax to pay the education costs for those kids after 30 years of working let alone the expense of child benefits, health cost, maternity cost, infrastructure etc etc This is all for big business and the right people in the world to benefit

British people should be made to work so we can clamp down on mass, uncontrolled immigration. Overhaul the benefit system. Don't make it so easy to claim benefits. (Only the genuine should be able to claim) My mother is still working and she has heart failure. She works full time aswell. (Modern medicine helps of course) Mass immigration should not be an answer.
Of course they will do the jobs, but many times immigrants are being put first to fill quotas, and there are incentives for employers, who do you think done these jobs before, dont be fooled
by the the lies.

I know a nhs consultant who is leaving the UK , going back to India. He’s going to India and is going to make sure young drs and nurses do not migrate to work in the NHS.. so don’t worry , i m pretty sure he will help bring the numbers down

We need the correct immigration not those who only seek to take. We have enough lovely polish, Spanish people etc to make up migration. What we don’t need are those who can’t integrate.
This country NEEDS immigration. We have an ageing society and family sizes have declined for generations. If you want to look at a rich country without many immigrants just look at Japan, its population is in decline. The alternative to immigration is population decline. Which causes a lot of issues when it comes to funding old people and their need for state pensions, plus healthcare etc... The major issue in this country is the failure of the state to build council housing like after the war. A dysfunctional housing market is causing people to have their incomes sucked up by bricks and mortar unlike anything we've seen in a hundred years or more. You can rectify this by providing alternative housing that is not completely market based i.e. council housing. We did this in the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.
The government can get 12 million pensioners back to work. Problem solved.
We have non-English, non-scottish, non-irish, non-scottish running our immigration. Where could the problem possibly be?
