  • Rishi Sunak’s government will unveil a major set of measures to bring down net migration to the UK after figures soared to a record high.
The Prime Minister is set to overhaul a series of visa rules to curb net migration after shock official figures showed net migration stood at 745,000 in 2022.
Home Secretary James Cleverly is also expected to tell the Commons that the minimum salary requirement for a skilled worker from overseas will be significantly hiked to around £38,000, a Whitehall official said.
Speaking to TalkTV's Peter Cardwell and Vanessa Feltz, immigration lawyer Harjap Singh Bhangal says: "The proof will be in the pudding. This is nothing new the Government are doing. In fact, a lot of the proposals mentioned are something that the government's already tried and failed in.”

because they dont want to work, some because they are lazy, some because they dont want to pay taxes and waste their life doing 9-5 and become a government slave, not realising they already are a slave to their doll. Which i totally understand and agree but get pissed off when I have to pay for them. We are the only animals that have to pay and enslave ourselves to live on the planet we are born on

Exactly. Cut off benefits to the able bodied and get in homeless that want to work. That's it. It would also contribute to stopping the boats largely, no more hand outs.

Because there aren’t nearly enough educated, talented, motivated people in the uk to work these skilled jobs. You think some the average lad from Manchester, or Liverpool, or Blackpool, who cant even write a single line of code is going to be a good fit for the countless data analyst, database manager, engineering, cybersecurity etc roles? Let alone the fact that these people have 0 interest in these fields. All they’re achieving by sending educated and talented Germans, Italians, French, Spanish young people back to their countries is giving a huge boost to industries in these other countries, whilst uk industries will lag behind.

@@boostar155 Thank you for your honest opinion, I respect it. Maybe I'm not understanding the underlying aspect of the migration policy, although having read through the comments, you get the immediate impression that there is some type of hate for people who actually abide by lawful immigration statutes, who ensure that they adhere to the legal process of acquiring a visa to emigrate to your esteemed country, alot of these people give up a life to pursue career goals and passion in fields that they studied but otherwise don't offer employment in the long run, like sitting at home with degrees but not finding a job for years or choosing a job that is totally different from what they studied which ends up paying them a salary you can barely live of. I seek better understanding because I am planning on using my pension fund to pursue better endeavours so I build a future for my two kids who are now 5 and 6. Atleast to do one thing good if I'm not good at anything else, I pray everyday and ask the good Lord to atleast grant me an opportunity to equip my kids with a quality upbringing, one I could not experience as a child growing up without parents, that is my wish for the rest of my existence in this world.

@@maazmustafa2322 not to mention that some of them use all of their pension fund money as an investment to emigrate to a better country, paying high visa fees in British Pound and not local money currency, that money goes directly into the British government, to fund capital projects and build the economy. So if a couple who has only two kids decide to emigrate as one unit, each of that family member has to pay applicable visa fees, pay for medical examinations, flight tickets etc, it literally is an investment to seek better opportunities elsewhere, from my personal perspective, I choosethe UK for instance, because I love the British culture, I had a British Cambridge School education system in my native country, I lovewatching every Manchester United match that I wish I could attend in person since I was a young lad, I am fully conversant and understanding of the English Language, if anything, it is a language I hold in high regard. And I genuinely want my kids to experience the world and a different culture so they can become respectable citizens wherever they choose one day, to live. I understand that the immigration topic is a hot debate, what I don't understand is, targeting migrants who go through the legal channels to obtain legal status. This I also why I feel there is a real underlying agenda. Imagine being told that you can't be part of something you've wholeheartedly admire and wish to be a part of. I don't know what it's like to live of government benefits, I've never lived a life that way, although I came from poverty, not once. I believe and I trust in hardwork and learning. It is much more deeper than simply choosing a country on a map just because everything looks so glossy in magazines or the telly, it's like any other British individual who aspires to become a big shot Hollywood actor and decides their dreams lie in pursuit of getting to America to start that process of their dreams, even if it costs them living a life in squalor for a couple of years before landing a breakout blockbuster movie. I honestly think that the proposals should be looked at carefully, especially where there is family dynamics involved, rather place a moratorium on legal migration, like say, allowing new application only after every 3-5 years, limiting family members to be allowed over, like a couple with only one or max 2 kids allowable, actively ensuring that officials follow up on statuses of the legal migrants already in the country to ensure what their work statuses show, whether still employed, socially independent household and legal backgrounds to see if a family member has had serious infringements against them that may be cause for concern i.e. having built up a criminal record for serious or violent crimes/offences in the first 3
years or records for social behaviours like domestic abusers etc. these can possibly curb certain social problems and ensure that legal migration is controlled by a moratorium.

We also have extreme shortages in electrical and chemical engineering, teaching (especially STEM subjects, but even in subjects like English!), IT professionals, healthcare sector etc.
Out of the 1 million that came into the UK, at least 50% would be international students and they are temporary migrants. These students pay 3 times what UK nationals pay to study here. They brought 40 billion to the economy. The govt made changes after Brexit to attract these students to compete with higher education markets in countries like the US, Canada and Australia as they were NOT the favourite destination for international students prior to the changes made during Covid times to help UK's education market. All that needed to be done was reverse the incentives they created in 2020. The rest of it is really not necessary. It is already quite hard for employers in most sectors (health and care exempted) to employ migrant workers.

@@thenetworker1773 the vast majority of international students leave. For instance, of the students who came in for a bachelor's or master's in 2016, only 17% were still in the UK on some sort of temporary visa in 2021 and only 1% had been given settlement. It is incredibly difficult to find a job and then keep that job and get the raises needed to achieve settlement.
Also, it looks like all the uncertainty around immigration has already impacted the numbers of applications received by UK universities from international students. Looks like most UK universities have not met their target for number of international students they wanted to recruit for the Jan 2024 intake. They're likely taking their money to the US, Australia, Canada as they had done until the govt relaxed some immigration rules at the end of covid times and after Brexit to meet immigration targets for international students to help UK universities.
With the rules becoming strict again as they were up until 2020 or so, immigration numbers will return to 2016 levels.
In 2016 or around, if you were an Indian going to a consultant to see which country to take your money for higher education to, you were advised against coming to the UK because you were seen as getting a better return on your investment in other countries where you could actually build a life if you wanted to.
I think there should be a, say, 5 year plan where the UK develops care workers locally and then puts stricter rules into practice around hiring care workers from abroad. That would probably benefit the UK more.

We need less immigration simple as, I dont care what an immigration lawyer says! He himself is making from this gravytrain, i also agree the wage should go up, just like inflation as for us "massively" as for ppl bringing family, if its something short-term why? Because wouldn't a family be better at home, you than send money to keep your children in schools, where they're have friends, or family that can help while you are working in the 🇬🇧 you see many are bringing way to many family members, never planning on leaving the 🇬🇧 its why we dont have any larger family homes anymore for our own.
