The Eetioneia Gate, on the Kastraki hill of Drapetsona, is the largest archaeological site of the Piraeus coast, with an area of approximately 20 acres. It is located to the west of the central commercial port, which it protected in ancient times.
The name "Hetioneia" referred to the entire land, where today the facilities of the PPA and the old Railway Station (Larissis) in Agios Dionysios are located. It owes its name to the mythical hero of Piraeus Hetion, who according to tradition was the first to inhabit it.
Important remains of the ancient fortification are preserved here. The Centennial Gate was built in 411 BC. for the protection of the ancient port of Piraeus and was one of the two entrances to the walled Piraeus (the second was at the City Gates) - only military forces passed through there. Traces of different periods can be found in the parts of the fortifications that have been preserved: from the initial construction phase of the 5th c. dating back to Themistocles (493 and 478/477), until the end of the 3rd c. e.g.
The circular towers of the Hetionian gate date from this last phase, which were partially restored in the 1990s. Inside the fortifications, the earliest rectangular towers built during Kononos (394 BC) are preserved, and which, together with the western wall, gave the fortification in its current form.
The defense of the fort was reinforced by a 3.5 m wide and 100 m long moat running parallel to the northern wall, ending at the City Gates, at the entrance to the ancient city of Piraeus. In recent years, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Piraeus and the Islands, in collaboration with the Region of Attica, continued the restoration work on two more towers of the monument with the aim of protecting the original material, recovering their structure and highlighting them as best as possible.
The restoration project of the Eetioneias Gate and the Ancient Walls, with a budget of 700,000 euros, concerned the complete restoration of the two towers of the fortification and the general shaping of the area (visitor routes, entrance gate, plantings, information signs, etc.) with the aim to make the space accessible to everyone.
The lighting study was prepared by Eleftheria Deco and implemented by Charalambos Stoupa.
The Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni inaugurated the illumination project and pointed out: "The Themistocleian walls of the port of Piraeus, part of which is the Hetionian Gate, are one of the most important works of ancient Greek fortifications. Here, one can recognize the fortification techniques developed from the 5th to the 3rd century. e.g. It is very important that this excellent work should be seen properly lit and enjoyed by citizens, visitors, and those on board ships arriving at the great port.
At the same time, with mild interventions, the work of shaping the area (visitor routes, entrance gate, information signs) proceeded to present it to the public as an open archaeological site that can be visited."
The archaeological site is part of the urban fabric, connects the past with the present, highlights the long history of the port of Piraeus and defines a new urban identity in the city and its coastal front, as "Kastraki" is in contact with the archaeological site Drapetsonas, a municipal park, which is planned to host a diverse network of cultural actions and activities.
The project of renovating the archaeological site of the Etionia Gate, let's see it as a precursor and in direct connection with the major project of converting the Silo - this emblematic building for Piraeus, directly opposite the Gate - into a Museum of Marine Antiquities. The Museum of Marine Antiquities, with a total budget of approximately 100,000,000 euros from the resources of the Recovery Fund, is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2025.
