How to become a Registered Physiotherapist in Australia??

In this video, I have discussed in brief the process of being a Registered Physiotherapist in Australia.
So there are two ways in which the student coming to Australia can qualify.
1) Studying a Physiotherapy Course - Bachelors or Masters (which is approved course or study program through AHPRA). AHPRA is abbreviated for Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency is the authority responsible for providing registration to the health professionals including physios, nurses, doctors and number of other health professionals.
If you have studied for any of the courses from above then you can straightaway get registered as physio and YOU DO NOT NEED TO GO THROUGH THE EXAMS PROCESS! But the hard part is getting into the course as you would require 7 each bands in IELTS/PTE and 70% and above marks or grades In your bachelors degree course (for each year). Please me mindful of the course fees to study a physiotherapy course from above listed universities as they are way to HIGH as well!
2) The alternate pathway to above is that you can take the Standard Assessment Pathway through Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC). APC is responsible authority to provide qualification as a physiotherapist in order to become a Fully registered Physiotherapist.
There are 3 stages for this pathway:
A) Eligibility assessment
B) Written Assessment
C) Clinical Assessment
With Eligibility Assessment, you will get your degree from India assessed first where you need IAP REGISTRATION (MUST) and mark -sheets from your bachelors degree and again 7 each bands in IELTS OR PTE.
(Advantage of getting this is once you are done with this, APC will provide you with Interim certificate which will allow you to find job as Limited registration Physiotherapist and is valid for 2 years (can be renewed depending on if you are on the way of doing exams. This means that you can work as a Physio under supervision. (P.S this is not a physio assistant job but you are working as a physio under supervision. And again the registration authority is AHPRA in order to apply for limited registration physio once you find a job. (Abbreviated as LR Physio).
Written assessment includes a theory exam of multiple choice questions, two papers with 60 questions in each and exam marking is 1000! Passing criteria is to get minimum of 500/1000. No limit on number of attempts if you are unsuccessful.

Clinical assessment has three exams: Musculoskeletal, Cardio-respiratory and Neurology. Exam is a simulation based exam on highly trained actors. PLEASE BE REMINDED : the clinical assessment has only two attempts and if you are unsuccessful with those two attempts, you would need to restart the process back from step 1 and then written and clinical again! :(
Last but not the least!
For Indian Physios, the written assessment is conducted remotely and also can be given from India but for Clinical you need to come to Australia.
Also, there is an AAPTA group which is (Australian Association of Physiotherapists Trained Abroad) Incorporated which has mentors and helps overseas candidates to get through the exams!

-You will need IAP-Lifetime membership*
-You may also need your transcripts later on in the process, so better to be prepared well in advance.
-The good part is, there are companies who will be happy to sponsor people, as in give you an employer-sponsored work visa 482 even when you are in India, (ofc if they like to hire you.) The same employer would act as your supervisor to go through the process. So, once you have your interim certificate and English exam in place, just apply for jobs and ask for a sponsored visa.
Tip: If you want sponsored visa, getting in aged care settings is easier than others. Please try for the regional areas, they are always looking for people.

There is a correction. For limited physiotherapy registration, one must find an employer first. Only they can give us the job for 2 years plus one must have a 2 year experience certificate. And there is only 2 trials for the written assessment as well. If din get through, have to start all over again.
Hi do you know about the application process to work as a PTA in Australia as a foreign graduate. After graduating with an Advanced diploma in Physiotherapy, and also having 2 years of work experience as a Junior physiotherapist.

Hi Pooja, Thank you providing insights for the Physiotherapy profession in Australia. Just wondering, similar to nursing is it easy to land up in a permanent role for physiotherapists too ? Any ideas or thoughts. As per my knowledge, when a permanent nurse calls in sick, the organisation hires another registered nurse through an agency to replace the permanent nurse' shift for that day. So, a registered nurse lacking local experience could get footprint in that sector. Does that apply to physiotherapists too? Similarly, are there any 2 years course in Australia for individuals who do not have any qualification related to health science to become a registered physiotherapist? Thank you

What Happens if I am Unsuccessful?
Once results are released, you will need to wait 14 days for the Internal Review period to be concluded. After 14 days you can apply for another Written Assessment session via your dashboard. There is no restriction on the number of times you can sit the Written Assessment, however the assessment fee is payable every time.

Hey I’m looking to get into physio I live in Australia btw but I have no atar and hsc and I’ve been told I have to do a diploma and bachelor of health science to start studying it, it’s roughly 3 and a half years to do the diploma and bachelor, does that course take the time off of the total duration of the Physiotherapy degree? and what do the courses consist of, im just worried I have to do the course for 3 years and then go on to study the total entire duration of physio 😕

@anuanil6418 Hey, actually, there are 2 pathways that you have to undergo to be a limited registered physiotherapist in Australia. The first step is to get an interim certificate, and the second one is to get APHRA registered, which is mandatory if you want to work based on your interim certificate. APHRA registration requires 7 bands each in IELTS and 65 each in the PTE exam.
I have completed my masters in india, gave ielts general and scored 6.5 bands…. I am planning to give pte… is ielts score valid and should i give pte?

Canadian Physio from India cant work until they get at least assistant PT diploma. Once you do then work full time as asssitant PT.
Here in Australia, you can start working as soon as you get you get limited registration i.e no need to give exams. Just get your uni documents approved by AHPRA. Still have to give exams later but you can start working asap.

Hi! can you please tell me if they consider if one module hai 6 and all others 7 and overall in 7 bands in IELTS?
No they don't n on top of that, they want 7 in each in one exam only not multiple or combined,u can try asking for MOI certificate from college but it's likely they won't consider, few uni do accept 6.5 just check out.
