So when you 'toss it' now it's in the environment permanently. How is that a good idea? Don't buy them in the first place! Don't support a toxic industry!
Stainless steel also includes toxic heavy metals that can leach out under certain circumstances. And those metals are far more "forever" than organic compounds like Teflon. Yes Teflon doesn't naturally occur, but the metals don't occur very often naturally in large densities either. The fact is that humans are huge accumulators, we create things that are toxic - but we also move things that naturally exist in low densities into very high densities and dramatically increase their toxicity. The reality is that we do a ton of things that are bad for this planet. Yes we should move to less toxic processes when it works, but we're always doing it at such scales, and always lagging behind. Just jumping between different methods isn't good for us or the planet. We need to stick with things that are good enough (until something better comes along and we're very sure it's actually better), and instead focus on actually reducing our consumption and making sure we can actually get rid of our waste. Plus Teflon is organic (in the chemistry sense). I know organic compounds can be just as destructive as any other. But if there's one thing the last 4 billion years have proved, it's that organic chemistry is very very malleable, and that life is brilliant at exploiting it. Whereas it seriously struggles at dealing with toxic non-organic compounds. They simply aren't the same thing, they just work differently. This doesn't even cover the raw amount of energy required for Teflon Vs something like stainless or aluminium.
