  • A perfect truck for a Carpenter or Trades Worker IMO, bare bones enough but with the important off-road features everyone wants and NOT super over-priced!

    Absolutely LOVE my 2023 Colorado TrailBoss! Ordered and waited 4 months for it. I ended up getting one of the first in NJ and am currently at 4,000 miles. GM put an unbelievable amount of effort into making this a solid, well thought-out little truck.
    The GM High Output tune for $400 gets you 430 ft. Lbs of tq and is absolutely worth the extra cost!

      @sblagg527 not so sure what you're talking about, but the 2.7 has been serving well in the full size Silverado for 4-5 yrs now, and theres quite a few of them nearing 200,000 mi. They have been largely well received by most owners and have proven to be as reliable as any other engine from any other manufacturer currently offered in a full-size pickup. The Colorado weighs nearly 2,000 lbs less than the Silverado, and the 2.7 has had some significant upgrades for the Colorado. You sound uniformed, and bitter.

      @@shawnsimmons8268 LOL!!!!!!!! I'M uninformed? Apparently you don't watch too many automotive repair channels on UA-cam, like Eric O at South Main Auto, Advanced Level Auto Diagnostics, or any number of other channels on here fixing the damage caused by GM's active fuel management system. It's a complete pile of garbage and every single mechanic who's had to deal with the damage done by one of these systems strongly suggests disabling it (not cheap but better than an engine overhaul/ replacement.) Sounds way more like YOU"RE the one who's uninformed, and just decided to go out and buy an overpriced heap with that system because YOU didn't bother to research beforehand. Just do a search for GM Active Fuel Management on youtube and sit back in awe at the MYRIAD of complaints.

    I miss the small trucks like we could get in the 80s, ie Toyota pickup, or S10. I had both actually. The Toyota was my fave.
    They were just a simple little truck to haul crap in, had great fuel mileage, and you could park them easily anywhere.

      it really sucks that they seem to only get bigger. and even worse you could slap a v8 in an s10, but these fat cows only have a 4 banger in them. sure theyre more power but thats a higher stress.
      but the tow ratings on these are really useful, big enough to do basic towing easily even if it cant pull a bus

      Blame the foolish government for the missing small trucks. The fuel economy standards are calculated based upon the overall size of the truck. A big hulking truck that gets 16 MPG is okay, but your little pickup that was easy to park and got 26 MPG was too much of a gas hog for its size according to the government. So, we forced people into buying bigger trucks that got worse gas mileage. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

And the highway MPG was better than the EPA rating. We got 24 to 28 MPG on the trip, including two 10,000 foot passes in Colorado. Zero problems so far. Haven't had it off road yet but that will be coming in the next couple of weeks.

    Biggest downside to the "Trail Boss" (for both the Colorado and the Silverado) is the G80. Its a mechanical "automatic" locker that only locks if one tire spins a lot faster than the other (it uses weights that swing out to lock, been in use since the 70s). And then there is this violent transfer of power that is known for breaking axles. A electronic diff is so much easier to control and just all around better. But otherwise, these trucks are a great improvement over the previous gen.

    • @danielrobey1759
      @danielrobey1759 11 місяців тому +1

      Ahh the ol gernade er, gov lok. The gov lok was okay in the 14 bolt rear end but in the lighter stuff it earned the gernade lok moniker... I'd take a properly preloaded clutch posi over it any day.

    • @PetrolJunkie
      @PetrolJunkie 11 місяців тому

      That happens when people don’t service their diffs. Mine does not have issues engaging. You’d get a nice thump and you don’t have to have a ton of difference in wheel speed. Just more than the difference going around corners under about 15-20 miles per hour.
      When the diff doesn’t get serviced the oil turns to sludge and that makes everything work like crap.
      The old gov-loc is one of the better designs. There are only four to chose from and one requires you to drag your brakes to make it work.
      I agree electric are nice, when they work. There are a lot more possible failure points and they fail pretty regularly. Mostly due to electrical issues.
      That’s my experience and why I would prefer the old gov-loc over the electrics.

    • @PetrolJunkie
      @PetrolJunkie 11 місяців тому

      @@sblagg527 Active cylinder managemet. Towed way more trucks with engines down than lockers. If the Active cylinder management has issues the engine will go into limp mode and you have to send it to the shop to fix it right away.
      The diff locker on the other hand usually fails open, even if it fails locked you can still drive the thing. Axles are at risk, but you can still drive them.

      @PetrolJunkie 11 місяців тому

      Shouldn’t even have to park them side by side, it’s very obvious.
      The modern truck had to get bigger because of fuel mileage regulations being based on wheelbase. The bigger the wheelbase the crappier the fuel economy is allowed to be. A micro truck would get fined for not being fuel efficient enough. The Colorado and Rangers had to get bigger than the original 80s and 90s versions otherwise they would have been fined for their gas mileage.
      The standard cab half ton from 1990 would be fined for having bad gas mileage today. My 2011 Silverado standard cab has a longer wheelbase, the same fuel economy. It’s also taller, with a deeper box. They don’t even want to make standard cabs anymore, so naturally the wheel base of a 2023 is even longer, it’s higher off the ground, the bed is deeper, there is more room in the cab. My 2011 would just clear my garage door, the 2023 will not. The 2011 would fit with the door down, the 2023 will have about three feet sticking out.

    Another great,insightful review Sarah - thank you!
    What would happen if GM put out this truck without all the fancy electronic stuff? Cheaper? Old school?

    Hey long time viewer first time comment
    Sorry Sarah , to me it’s more a Trail Supervisor than Boss
    The boss always gets the leather chair.
    Don’t like the all the controls on the screen…need the tactile buttons and switches as backups
    I understand simple interior for the truck and appreciate it for service trucks.
    I do like the price point and I agreed with all your “wish it had” list.
    Also, loved when you let go of the wheel for hill assist 😂 but not totally there yet for that feature.
    Looking forward to more truck reviews!

    I agree with you, Sarah n Tuned about an actual stick shift. I wish for them to return. I personally prefer the 5 speed.
    I just saw the 24 edition at my local Chevrolet dealership and thought it was a great value. After seeing your review, it will most likely be my next purchase.
    I also just saw a list that had the Colorado as the safest mid-size truck, according to the IIHS.
    Keep up the great work 👍

    Still love my 23' Ridgeline RTL HPD for my bikes, kayaks, and various aquatic-maneuver boards. But, if I had to haul something and/or do serious off-roading this thing is clearly the Beast from Yucca Flats. BTW, never heard the term rage-vomit before. But it's so weird and funny I'm writing it down as part of a creative project in which I'm engaged. Either way, be a great name for a punk rock band. They could open for my semi-fake band, Blister Chicken.

    Great review as always, probably just a simple slip of the tongue but the Eaton G80 isn’t an electronic locking differential, it’s automatic locking. Works on inertial weight principle.

    I drove a new Colorado a couple times and I really liked it. My ONLY question, since growing to distrust all things GMC, is if I bought a Tacoma and a Colorado and drove them both the same over 15 years, would they both still be running and which would need fewer repairs? Is it worth buying a Chevy these days? I switched to Honda and Toyota and never looked back. With the 2024 Taco coming I'm in the market for a new truck soon, and I'm genuinely curious you'd buy.
