  • We examine the 2020 #Yamaha YZF-R1 rider modes at Silverstone to find out what difference rider modes make and how they improve your riding and enjoyment?
    The bike is equipped with remarkably similar #technology to that used in #MotoGP in 2012.

    My very First Bike back in 1982 :
    little YAMAHA XT 250 Enduro.
    It did endure many rides.
    I was crazy enough to go from DENVER to L.A. and back in 5 days.

    I did my first track day at Donington GP couple of weeks back on my BMW S1000R and the rider aids just gave me more confidence to go harder on the throttle and the brakes. I wasn't really tempted to turn them off either because the fear of lobbing it would have increased and I don't think I would have enjoyed myself as much! I still felt like a hero regardless lol

    Really interesting video! Rightly said, the idea is to have fun rather than make a lap record. The last lap on a track day will always be drained. Your observations are really helpful. Cant wait to try this out!

    Great video. I've got the 2018 r1. Love it .
    Well said about having fun . To many people think its a race . Never seen money or trophy🏆 given out lol.
    I've been on quite a few track days . Still people go for lap times .
    They should do track days just for them , so we can just have fun and enjoy the day ..

      They have trackdays for them already.
      It's called racing.
      However, many of the riders know that they'll be out of their depth so they stick to impressing their friends by being the fastest on a trackday.
      Two different worlds.

    Running full traction control on the R1 reduces the allowed throttle opening at lean angles a lot. So, you cannot really feel the throttle mode on track then. And it doesn't pop when doing so, because it's not reacting to any slide or wheel spin, it's just limiting the throttle. Really not nice to ride with in any condition, not even in the wet ;)

    What do you mean? We are on a track day. Not interested in lap times. Of course I'm interested in lap times! I want to be able to measure my improvements.

    Interesting video. I have to admit I didn’t think the r1 was one of the most advanced rider aid systems In 2020 but I haven’t ridden one in years so learned something new today.
    How did you find brake fade over such a long intense day ? So many people complaining the brakes are terrible on track.

    Beautiful bike, except, why is the cat box so ugly ?
    It looks like it's rusty.
    Why can't they at least paint it to match the muffler ?
    Yamaha is not alone in this.

    Given a full up Yamaha ABS w/IMU (I.E. 2023 XSR900) Do I even need to worry about the rear brake? Apparently Yamaha mixes the two brake systems. Frankly I'd prefer to land on my right Foot, giving me the option to diddle the gear shift or put down the kick stand. Can I just use the hand brake and let the ABS do it's job? I had a wreck years ago locking up the rear, but my reaction let off the front somewhat.. skid, slide, kiss the asphault, and slide off the road in a very hard turn. I would of made it with this ABS if I didn't lock up the the rear.

    I thought you were going to analyze the track times you ended up with between All ON and All OFF. ALSO Big Question: Does the ABS modulate Front and Rear Brakes? If I go front brake only, does the ABS add in the relevant rear brake, or vice versa? For an emergency brake, just go full force on both front and rear brakes? A car only has 1 brake pedal, MC has two.. are they totally independent? If I do a Wheelie what happens if I touch the front brake with the front wheel in the air? I just got a '23 XSR900 with I believe very similar Driver Aids to this '20 R1. Guess I'll figure it out!

    Interesting test here. 👍 I just wish you could have done it with lap times and then compare it against another R1 on full power mode throughout the day.
    My bike is 115 rwhp. So compared to the sport liter bikes I'm always in 'rain mode', LOL.
    More than enough for the street tho.

    Question to anyone here who knows. Is it okay to increase the power levels but keep all the safety functions D mode gives?

    • @MikeOn2Wheels
      @MikeOn2Wheels 3 роки тому +1

      Yes, no issue with doing that. Pwr modes 1-3 just change the throttle map, 1 being most linear and aggressive and 3 being more progressive (softer initially but still 100% power allowed). Pwr 4 is the only power mode that actually limits maximum engine power. The rest of the YRC functions operate independently so you can run them on whatever levels you prefer

    Wanted to see lap times, if electronics doesn't make you quicker then they not worth spending 18 hard earned grand on a 2020 R1.

    • @MikeOn2Wheels
      @MikeOn2Wheels 3 роки тому +3

      The electronic aids don’t necessarily equate to making you faster, but they do give you more confidence to push a little beyond your personal limits which you may find reduce your lap times.

    I had a 2016 R1M, after much messing about and Re-mapping etc. I came to the conclusion the Japanese are way behind the Europeans! The ABS is useless, the TC is too intrusive, it’s 1 or off anything more is useless .... give me an Aprilia RSV4 or Duc V4 or BMW s1000rr any day .... rider aids are only useful when they can add confidence and use ability - Sorry Yamaha they are not as good as you make out !
