- Electronic traction control is a relatively new feature on adventure motorcycles. Traction control systems are becoming more and more advanced and offer lots of customization. Eric and Iain from Touratech-USA are back to explain how it all works, when you should use it, and when you shouldn't.

Video actually starts at 1:28 (and is very much worth watching!)
Thank you. The blooper reel at the start was getting annoying the longer it got.
Using sand to explain/show TC in action. What a simple idea. Thank you.
I liked that a lot too!!
This channel is criminally underrated.
Excelente video! Keep em coming this is one of the best adv moto channel on UA-cam 👊👍
Hands down the best explanation of TC systems I've seen.. Very well done.
This is a really good explanation of traction control and most all youtubers who test bikes leave this out and talk about how intrusive it is and never talk about how usefull it can be. Great job!
That was a Spectacular explanation!
I nearly bailed on the annoying blooper intro, but just made it to the actual content, which was great.
You're welcome.
Yea, me too. The out takes might be better at the end of the vid, and too much of anything is...too much.
I may have to give it another try. I love this channel but after what seemed like the 8th false start we backed out.
Yeah that wasn't good. I nearly bailed too, would have except I was very interested in the topic since I'm making an adventure bike purchase this spring.
I bailed. No regrets.
You guys aren't wearing golf hats...I forgot I was watching MOTOTREK!
Gotta switch it up every once in a while!
I didn’t even recognize him for a while 😂
Great explanation thanks. I have the features but wasn’t completely educated on the workings.
Aside from the waste-my-damned-time intro, the video was pretty good.
These vids are spot-on and very helpful. Thanks, Mototrek!
And to repeat, your drummer is swinging! (That's a compliment.)
Interesting and informative, especially as I have little experience and knowledge of traction control.
My one experience was being given a brand new AT to test ride and being told to turn the TC on off-road and go whatever speed I wanted. I didn't quite do that...but I did ride a hell of a lot better than my ability would have allowed me...
My reaction to that was that I'd prefer to learn those skills myself than have the bike do them for me.
For now, on a CB500X, I have little need for it. (A very forgiving bike with only 47Hp).
Still I know a lot more about it now - thanks :)
Straight to the point. Clear and concise. Thanks for the video.
Love that shot of the Columbia! Gorgeous!!
Thanks Gents! Your video just single-handedly sold my wife on me getting a 15 year newer motorcycle. I'm looking for your Patreon page as you are reading this!!! Great content, keep it coming. :)
Just picked up a new 1090 and this video really helped me understand the TC settings. Thanks!
The electronics work incredibly well on my 1290SA. The offroad traction control makes it not only effortless to get the rear end out sideways on the dirt, it’s virtually completely safe too. It simply won’t add extra power beyond the rear wheel spinning 2x the front wheel no matter how heavy handed you are. If you’re not so experienced offroad (ie don’t have much of a dirt bike background as I didn’t) it takes a bit of a leap of faith to start drifting the first few times, but I got used to it pretty quickly, it really is confidence inspiring when you’re on a 230kg fueled bike. Offroad ABS works even better, I don’t know how they get the front wheel to brake with traction so well offroad.
@@ronanrogers4127 thank you for the response! I grew up off road and still love getting sideways on corners.....but on the 1090....I'm thinking it'll be a bit different. So I'm glad to hear that the TC and ABS help out. I have yet to get it out off road but should be able to do so this weekend. If I survive I'll thank the machine and your advice. 🙂
Congrats on the new bike, Edward!
@@MOTOTREK thank you, sir!
thanks - you told me exactly what I wanted to know about traction control!
Great and informative video guys ! Impressed......
What an awesome video. Thank you !
Outstanding best presentation of how these modes work on the sand. Thank you.
Great video!!!
Thank you
We need more detailed video on this. Hope we get soon.. 😀
I love this channel! Another great clip, thank you! From my experience, TC is not a slam dunk on rocky climbs. On a R1200 GSA, Enduro Pro mode, climbing a steep and loose rocky section with TC activated, the bike slowed to the point where progress halted. Mid-climb I started slowing, so I kept opening the throttle, then changed down to 1st and kept opening the throttle... alas, I kept slowing. Deactivating TC was needed to make that climb.
Found myself in a similar situation on my tiger. Pumping the clutch got me enough power to get me over the hill where I could then switch off the TC. Don't think I could have got going had I stopped on the ascent.
What year is your GSA? I have a 2017 Rallye and hope mine is newer enough to have an “improved” version of Enduro Pro. As much as they research these things, one would think that BMW woulda figured out that yes, we will take these bikes up steep off-road stretches, and duh, the bikes really do need to be able to climb up steep and loose stuff.
@@SuperBardley Mine is 2018. All these "aids" have their limits and finding them is half the fun. I liked DarcyOG's suggestion... I'll try that if I find myself in a similar situation again.
Thanks. Very informative.
Expertly explained. Thank you!
Handy tip, if you find yourself on a steep loose climb with TC killing your accent, slip the clutch in and out to get some rear bite. Got me out of a situation I didn't want to stop in until I could switch off TC
DarcyOG Thanks for this, it’s a question I was going to ask.
great vid as usual.... and I have to say I love the sound track.... parts of it remind me of Antonio Sanchez
The sand track demo was really nice to see and understand.
Excellent video gents. Thanks :)
I had heard different things from many people. A lot of them said that traction control and ABS should be turned off completely for off-road. I have almost no experience off-road on my ADV bike. Turning the traction control to a mode that allows some slippage makes more sense than turning it off completely. Now I need to watch a video addressing ABS off-road. Thanks for the info!
Most experienced driver says safe u life be lock rear wheel in extremely situation to rapidly change direction (drift) try it on tarmac with abs or traction control
Thanks great informative video . Thanks
Abs is a blessing. I turned mine off for the first time while going off road today and I am very surprised at how much it really helps for on road riding
The ABS on my 1190 save my life for sure, locked brakes, did slide around an SUV that turned in front of me and stopped, all In the blink of an eye, stayed upright!
Excellent explanation; presumably that stuff still goes for my S1000 XR but with less off road drama?
TC very well explained - well done. I find it interesting that the 2 new mid-size ADV bikes just out (Tenere 700 and KTM 790) have very different approaches to this. The T700 has no TC, simple ABS on/off, and more moderate linear power (70 hp). The more powerful, more expensive 790 has TC and many other bells & whistles. I think both bikes will sell well mainly because they are lighter in weight compared to the bigger 1200s etc. It will come down to personal preference and budget. Some people will like the simplicity of the 700. Others will prefer having the option of dialling up a TC system to a level that suits the terrain. I look forward to testing both when the 700 arrives in Australia.
Agreed 100%
i learn something today ;-) merci
[1st minute - no pressure at all guys! :D] Great video! Thanks for simple but detailed enough explanation with presentations. I wonder if TC will lead to lack of skills in the future for motorcyclist. No doubt it is useful, it is helpful, but would be great to get all riders to learn how to deal with difficult situations on non-supported motorcycle. Thanks again for this video!
Yeah unless they get seriously injured or die trying to get those skills. Safety devices and electronics are always better regardless of what "some " people say. I've heard the seatbelts might lock you in if the car catches fire way too many times. It's a similar argument since traction control is a safety device! It will let people improve their riding skills and turn off traction control after they get more confident on the bike as opposed to jumping into the deep end right off the bat and possibly getting hurt.
Wide open on a 120hp bike on a loose surface hill and relying on a black box!!! Sorry it's beyond me.
Saw this a month ago and liked it. Saw it today after trying and not liking '14 GS Rain mode up a washboard dirt road hill. More info needed. After that, please make a "downhill video" about rocky sandy downhills, straight and curvy, as I read that getting the brakes to work right becomes a challenge then.
Made sense seeing the effects on the sand, good vid. Thanks! :)
cool vid, I need to find a beech now .
Great Info. I have the 2017 R1200GSA and to many modes... LOL Thanks again.
You're welcome, Harrison.
Just go Enduro Pro, switch off TC and ABS an go 😁💪
Ready to leave work and play with this on my scrambler 1200!
Nice informative content 👍
Good vid, as expected and I wouldn't have these gadgets if you gave them to me and neither will I ever have a self-driving car.
Ha ha, "I like more drama in my rides!" Well-explained vid, thanks.
@5:52 How should to set up system when driving uphill? to be safe and the best In your opinion :
Drive mode: Rain mode or Road mode or Sport mode
TCC : On or Off
Abs : On or Off
Remark : I drive a Tiger 800 XCX.Thank you information....^^
Thanks for the video, and nice to see you sportin' Randolph sunglasses, the only sunglasses still Made in the USA.
Good one!
I got the F850GS as in the video, but without ride modes besides ROAD and RAIN. I hope I can upgrade later to the other modes (I'm poor).
Thought this video was going to be as bad as the last one with these guys, but I purservered and in the end it was ok. Plenty of very relevant and useful info. Liked it. Hated the intro.
I have a KTM 790R which has plenty of TC, ABS and throttle response modes - which are great. One question I have is what is the best for deep soft sand ? I think, but have not experimented enough, that maybe best with no TC or lowest TC (1 on scale of 1-9 on 790R) . I assume you just need grunt (spin) to get up momentum (speed) to get out and on top of the soft sand .... appreciate if anybody has tips / proven experience - thanks ! (chunky tyres also helps)
Good clip
I go thumbs up for TC on normal tarmac roads but not off road riding.
Does Traction control work along with the ABS ?
Or let me put it this way, does Traction control go off if I turn my ABS off or pull out my ABS fuse to turn off ABS ?
MY Vstrom 650 has 2 traction control modes and it confuses me a bit sometimes.
Where did you guys record this? Looks like an awesome beach!
Pacific Beach State Park on the WA coast, USA.
I appreciated this info since I just bought a used Yamaha Super Tenere in January and haven't had a lot of practice off road yet. Although I have dropped it twice in the mud, once because my right pant leg caught on the master cylinder cover for the back brake. Now I can think about how to use the TCS to my advantage. Is there a video out that Mototrek did on how to slide the back tire around on bike that have constant "on" ABS? I saw the video that Bret did with the BMW and the Honda AT, but I couldn't afford either of those bikes so I need help learning how to do something I grew up doing on every bike I rode except my Moto Guzzi 750 Ambassador. The drum brakes lacked serious braking ability on my Guzzi.
If your bike doesn't have switchable ABS, open the seat, open the fuse box and remove the ABS fuse. Should do the trick
@@RanjithCoplay I will look into that thank you.
If you are going down, keep hold of the bars. Do not put out your arm. If you land on an outstretched palm you are likely to fracture your wrist or collar bone. Better to fall on to your shoulder and hip.
If your traction control is like mine on the 690 Enduro R, it is not as refined setting wise. On road/Offroad TC either on or off. You will have issues on soft dirt hill climbs. The 690 will stall if TC is not turned off. Reason being as the back wheel spins (which you need to keep going) it rolls off the throttle and momentum is lost and bike stalls. As the video says, make sure you undesrstand how your system works and it's limitations.
Good advice. Proper technique will assure the best chance of getting to the top even without traction control.
So I have a ktm 390 adventure with lean angle TC but no rider modes. Also have abs with optional off road mode. Would it be best in normal trail riding conditions to leave the traction control on? I've only ever rode enduro bikes so these fancy electronics are sorcery to me
On my Africa Twin CRF, I put my TC off as soon as I ride on smooth terrain or steep climb. Not sure if this TC really helps in anything !? I just control the power delivery with the throttle !
I agree,TC was designed for riders who has very little riding experience, who then bought themselves a big powerful machine to go ADV.
So cool. I have a KTM 790 Adventure R with all those gizmos. Guess I don’t need all the fancy protective clothing now.
well done gents
Great explanation! Very clear and great examples.
Thanks, Dave.
I'm curious how the "Gravel" mode in my Africa compares to your "Rain" mode? Just made me wonder why the Africa doesn't have a "rain" mode.
Added: Mine is a 2019 version.
Ok, now I need to go find the beach you were riding on and give my traction control the business
Pacific Beach State Park, WA, USA
@@MOTOTREK Woot! Thanks much!
on the ktm can u go sport mode with offroad traction control?
Not on my 1290SA. I believe you can go sport mode with offroad ABS.
Thanks for the answer, Ronan.
the new 790R has a Rally mode that gives you separately selectable throttle (street offroad or rally which is as aggressive as sport on their other bikes) and 9 levels of TC that you can change on the fly. levels 7-8 are about the same as “offroad mode” TC.
Bikes without an off switch and have the front sensor eliminated by jumping the rear sensor and the front sensor so that the system gets the same readings thinking its the front and rear. Install a 3 way switch and you will have the option of using traction control when you want.
I have the older version of the traction control on my 2010 r1200gs and I always ride with both traction control and abs off as it gives me a lot more control in offroad conditions and I know the bike well enough to let it do what I want without software chipping in.
So as I understood, the proper situation to shut the TC is in the deep sand. Right?
Not all traction controls are equal. Try to go up a rocky hill on a Tiger800 xc, traction control will pretty much bring you to a dead stop before you're halfway up. No limited slippage, no amount of weight shifting will fix it... it just has to be turned off... The Xca has limited slippage but I haven't tried one. So... just saying... what you guys are saying is valid for the bikes you had, but really doesn't apply to all and would have been worth mentioning.
New to adventure bikes, and don't even own one yet, but are you saying at the end of the video that you should turn off the traction control system.....or use the off-road mode????
This is a fun channel 😂😂 (start)
sure....all these electronic stuff makes riding easier, more comfortable, more whatever.... I would like to compare this with preparing coffee. I can use a full automatic machine and just push a button to get me a cup of coffee. Or i can powder the beans , poor the hot water slowly by hand , like in earlier days my mom or grandma did. Both ways will give you the same result......a cup of coffee or climbing up a step hill...... I dont want to miss the feeling i made it by myself....thats my personal joy :-)
Is it necessary to have traction control
anyone can give conclusion ? should we use tcs or not?🙄
start watching at 01:30. Before that its just small talk
cool my bike has nothing of that sort i guess i would have to use my brain and skills
It's always possible to disable that assistance, but it's nice to know that you can also use it.
@@giovannialfano5979 Except that manufacturers make it prohibitively difficult to disable, or make you pay a premium for the model that allows you to switch off. Africa Twins constantly default to very intrusive TC.
@@giovannialfano5979 I know, I disable my brain and skills all the time
My T7 is all rider input
I know you think that opening 'gag reel' is amusing but seriously guys.. 01:32 in and the content hasn't started yet.. not good. The content after was useful however. Pro tip - next time stick the 'fun' stuff in your edit at the end. ;)
The opening is amusing, and totally worth watching. 90 seconds, Bro. You can afford that.
MOTOTREK - sorry ‘bro’, but ..nah. Don’t get defensive. Take feedback, it’s a gift. It also happens to be a common view judging by the other comments on this video. What’s more, in a media environment of short content and shorter attention spans, being self indulgent at the beginning of of a piece that only a portion of your audience will be amused by isn’t that smart. If you want to add ‘colour’ do it at the end as a reward to people for watching and use it to build rapport with viewers and build subs. 👍🏻
We need a Wheelie mode.
The Africa twin now has 3
👍👍👍👍👍
This stuff is fine on the street; but is completely crutch and very intrusive offroad. ABS will have me rolling into trees the way I ride (from experience).
That surprises me. The offroad ABS setting on my KTM 1290 SA works incredibly well, it works so well that I can’t really understand how it enables me to slam on the front brakes riding on both dirt and gravel without skidding (the rear can lock up). I can use the front brakes going down very steep hills offroad and on dirt and gravel tracks. I had gen 1 ABS on my R1100GS in the late 90s,and it used to pulsate and actually not brake at all. The KTM system is incredibly effective. The offroad traction control is brilliant as well...I’ll often hit 140-145 km/h on dirt and slide the back end out like these guys say
@@ronanrogers4127 I ride a '16 690; whichever gen abs is on it will let you roll right off a mountain while giving you a foot massage. I was chasing a dirt bike buddy one time through some single track and just about plowed a tree.
Dale Jahnke Hi I had similar experience on my new KTM 790R ... it was pumping through some mountain dirt roads and nearly had a few accidents on corners and had street mode ABS on ... learned I must have ABS set to off road mode which is NO ABS on rear and front ABS with lean angle disabled. not sure what modes the ‘16 690 has. The 790 is fantastic plus Rally mode with throttle response modes and dial up and down traction control on the fly
Cut the intro blooper stuff out...get to it!
On public roads traction control will save your life it's brilliant
Yeeechhhh .... not for me ..... I’ll keep my KLR ... :)
Before buying a bike with traction control, I believe that everyone shall hone their skill on a standard bike. Nothing makes you a better rider than loose dirt and few falls. Master the figure of 8 on loose gravel with a bike fitted with 80/20 tires and then let's see who still needs traction control.
Someone see motocross bike with abs and traction control?
That's thecdifference between you young kids and us old dinosaurs...we had to use all our senses at all times and have our own computer control the wrist...nowdays electronics make these rides available to plenty ppl, maybe even to some that shouldn't yet be riding something heavy n powerful
For everyone who's exhausted at first 10 seconds: you can start watching from 1:26. You're welcome. P.S. That's probably the reason why those two haven't done any more videos on this channel.
Blame the editor for that extended intro. Sorry.
All electronic aids should be able to be shut off so that if one were inclined to increase skill level and learn to control their bike (or car) or want to have manual control they can.
“but for a newer rider, somebody that hasn’t really fine tuned their ability to manage traction on the ground, an electronic traction control is a fantastic tool to keep your ride safe and secure”
So when will you learn how to fine tune your ability to manage traction control?
Practice practice practice, us Tc when new get the feel then go somewhere easy flat and manageable and turn tc off and the slowly practice
I'm all in for electronic aids, we (humans) have a biased judgments of risks if we think we are on full control.
We tend to underestimate automatic controls but the reality is that we'll never be able to make 500 evaluation per second like modern bikes/car MCU are doing under the hood without taking the extreme case of airline planes drive by wire systems.
Sure also the electronics are not fail safe and is still a novelty in the field of motor bikes but it'll get better and smarter and we are becoming more dumb. I agree on what mototrek said in the tutorial series, 50% is technique but the other half is strategy and experience, and I don't mind building up experience with the help of electronics to compensate my lack of perfect off-road technique.
I'd just rather have the electronic aids, and us my skill/experience without them, you only end up relying on them, and when they fail you fail as you haven't learned the skill necessary
Video starts at 1.30. For some reason
It's all amazing, but I'd rather just trust my brain and skill than a computer
so basically it makes you a better driver than you are
If by "driver" you mean "rider"... Yes!
And makes sure you will never get better.... :)
Traction control makes driving boring, that what it looks like anyway. Safe but boring. Thanks for showing this - well done. I´m glad I don´t have it on any of my bikes.
Please gents keep it professional as I almost bailed.
Traction control? No. Just install a sand paddle and put in a supercharged H2 engine. Always doubt, always throttle out.
I have a 200 cc Chinese dual sport. Why am I watching this?
You'll still learn stuff!
