This is similar to the Feynman technique of learning. Which is to learn something to a degree at which you feel confident to teach it. Only in teaching someone, do you get challenged about the nuances of it, by learners who can't easily conceptualise what you are saying without asking a ton of questions. It is that level of questioning that forces you to close any unwitting gaps in your own knowledge.

I felt personally attacked when he mentioned purple belts as being low level 😂😂😂

Roger Gracie remains my favourite because of his humility while being the ultra elite that ever was in BJJ. The fact he laughs at being tossed like a child and that it INSPIRED him to get better - which consequently made his BJJ that much better. He is the ultimate BJJ Martial Artist - in character, skills and temperment...

True, as I got better, I got worse at dealing with bad positions.

This is a super mature observation. I noticed that my sense of urgency went away as I started feeling comfortable in bad positions. I spent the bulk of my brown belt reminding myself how to hustle

Same, watching some Danaher stuff and how Gordon trains has helped me a lot in that regard

Fabricio Werdum became world champ in gi, ADCC and UFC in a similar way, teaching as a purple belt out of Madrid.

I love Rogers Bjj style. Simple but devastatingly effective. Nice compliment on Judo. Judo can do wonders for your gi game

Joe Rogan says the same thing. The way to get good is not to train with other black belts, it’s to practice with Brown belts or Purple belts and just strangle them.

I guess the lesson here is you can learn something from everyone, in jiu-jitsu and outside of jiu-jitsu.

Work on your defence, especially escapes, and then, escaping and putting the opponent back into your guard. Being a lower belt also gives you an immense opportunity to work on and build a guard retention that will last you a lifetime! All the best! :)

It's very true, the really good guys never have to defend, they are always winning, I spent my whole BJJ life surviving. It is what I do. I'm crap. So therefore I evolved to survive.
