Hey guys! In Part four of the Aspect Zodiac theory exploration, we look at the "Mutable" Aspects which relate to changeable elements one's experience of reality, with Hope & Rage describing one's perspective on life and reality, and thus their feelings about them. Life and Doom partly describe one's status in society and potential power over or constraints under it's systems.

Assuming life is linked to the cherubs puts an interesting light on the doom symbol resembling a dark green skull....
The doom symbol also symbolizes The Tumor though, which in a way kind of fits with the skull within the aspect. A skull is from something already dead, and The Tumor is literally a world-ending explosive. Dead and soon to die, lost and soon forgotten. Morality having little meaning because of a distinct absense of true power; true control over the world.

I think the duality for life might be closer to “care for others” vs “care for yourself”, or just, who you put your energy into caring for

This is exactly what I've always imagined it as. Jane's flip-flopping between "doormat" and "dominatrix" backs this theory up quite well.
I personally believe that Life as an aspect doesn't really have much to do with finality, or at least not bringing things to an end. Space seems to be an aspect of beginnings, and Doom one of endings, but Life is everything inbetween, what's what's inbetween it all right? Life.
The Life aspect characters connected to finales and endings are the ones that are "Thief of Life", which means their classpect leans towards taking away the aspect which is the continuation of something. To make this more clear if we look at the other Life players, we see their powers specifically lean towards helping others continue on, and continue living. Both Feferi and Jane have Resurrection powers, which is a total reversal of the idea of finality. Plus Jane doesn't seem to be heavily tied to or the cause of any major finality as far as I remember.
Feferi also negotiates the dreambubble afterlife, a total refusal of the end of life.
And Meenah, by stealing the lives of her friends, ensured that they'd all continue on in the Dreambubbles.

@@ahva2280 While I think there still would be an afterlife without the dream bubbles (as karkat dreaming with his dead dream self seemed to end up with the non-dream bubble horror terror area. As well as ghost Aradia being a thing before sgrub even started), It still fits strong on continuation thematics since it continues their afterlives just as they remembered their original lives through their memories.
Interestingly, BKEW described the connection between Space and Time to beginnings and ends.
I always interpreted doom and rage as forms of destruction, doom being passive and slow destruction through decay, and rage being active destruction through violence and direct manipulation. And I think life and hope are very accurate counterparts to this.
Yo, I'm a Lord of Doom. We can be as destructive and explosive as we want, we literally embody the end of things. It can happen however we want.

I find the idea of linking Life to a snakes and specifically Cherubs to be a very interesting notion. Given how Hope is that of a Cherub's wings and Doom is a skull surrounded quite blatantly by Cherub green, I have to wonder if all of the Mutable Aspects are in some way linked to Cherubs. After all, Gamzee and Kurloz, both Rage Bound, are confined to a cult that believes in the resurrection of Lord English and his Mirthful Messiah. So could it be that each of these aspects represents a fundamental piece of Cherubs? Are these particular aspects just strongly tied to Cherub Culture? Is this why Gamzee shows up in that one Zillyhoo flash? If I may reach even further, is the reason why a Rage Bound like Gamzee was chosen to bring Lord English into existence because Rage may be tied to more negatively charged Cherubs like Caliborn? Is a Hope Bound being prophesied to defeat Lord English connected to more positively charged Cherubs like Callie?
Just something to ponder.
All of that would make complete sense!
I think we could even look at how cherub's think and how their "society" works to parse that out further
The malevolent cherubs think in terms of Rage, seeking destruction and negativity, while the benevolent cherubs think in terms of Hope, seeking peace and positivity
Weirdly, Alt!Calliope seems tied to the Doom aspect, as she's concerned with the death of Lord English and the end of the Alpha Timeline, while Caliborn and Lord English are tied to Life as they strive for eternal life and thus eternal destruction
Cherub "society" and "culture" is a gross mixture of Hope and Rage, since they have a strange fixation on the Zilly stuff and Jujus which seem very Hope-y, as they're in the realm of imagination and belief, but also very Rage-y, since Jujus and the zilly-sucker and culture are all very contrived and confusing.
That could all be a reach but it's interesting regardless
I like these connections very much, and I'm tempted to save them.
I feel like you can actually tie a lot of symbols to the cherubs. Space and time are obvious. Doom and hope? The cherub’s skull and the cherub’s wings. Blood? Calliope and Caliborn’s blood change color when their minds swap, and they type in the color of the blood of the cherub they predominate. I wonder what other symbols you could tie to them. Since they are the most powerful entities in paradox space, i think it’d make sense that they borrow symbols of all the aspects.
Heart and mind also change for cherubs
Breath refers to speach and the way a cherub speaks also changes
The symbol for rage Looks Like a face and it literaly has swirls on its cheeks
Well, it's stated in the comic itself that the cherubs draw from the the core forces of paradox space while mating, whether it be the concept of "Do as you wish," and/or the the aspects, AKA: the building block particles of reality.
As a Rogue of Doom I always wait for someone to finally talk about the Doom aspect
It's interesting that it's so downplayed in the comic, because I think that's just the nature of Doom!
Doom players tend to exhaust their energy in big, monumental outbursts like Sollux moving the meteor, so once their energy is expended they resign themselves to the default Doom player stance of watching events from afar
Again we see that with Mituna, he changed the course of Doom with one single act that fried both his brain and his powers, leaving him to sit back and watch things happen from there.
Both of those examples may just be specific to the Captors, as well as their classes' interactions with Doom, but they're illuminating anyways
I actually wanna see if the aspects have a triadic relationship, like: mind-blood-light, or breath-void-heart

Breath-void-heart: Would have a pretty terrifying Freymotiff, like a soul hurricane that leaves opponents with nothing.
Mind-blood-light: Sounds like The Machine from Person of Interest. Intelligent, all-knowing and values their relationship with it's creator/friends.
Note that the four possible triadic relationships are all that of the cardinals with either their opposite mutables (for Space and Time) or their opposite fixed aspects (for Blood and Breath).

Life Rage Space: Rampanent Growth?
Hope-Time-Doom: Easy Armageddon. Have it play to Angis D from Ace Combat 4 for the sweet holy apocalypse.
I've always seen Life as a circle. It's the state of doing things and moving toward things, getting up and getting what you want. Its energy but the slow build of it. It has no start and has no end its just loops endlessly back in on itself, as when one things ends another begins.
That makes a lot of sense, wow
Since Doom is all about fixed beginnings to fixed endings, Life could easily be linked to cycles and simultaneous death and rebirth
Which would tie in nicely to the cycle of (for lack of a better term) good-to-bad that the Life players we see go through, as Jane is a good person as a kid, becomes corrupted by Crocker, goes back to being herself, then in the epilogues (spoilers ahead) becomes just a shitty, backstabbing person
And through the Peixes we see that good-bad cycle again; Feferi is good, Meenah is (typically) bad, and their reciprocation in position across the scratches could be emblematic of the good-to-bad dichotomy

As a Knight of Doom, I wish you could maybe talk about the powers of aspects like my that aren’t as explained as well in the narrative as well as others like Time and Space.
Classpects are stated in the comic as being inherently shaped by the perception of the user in any specific instance, with the nature of the class and aspect each providing more of a scaffold than a ruleset.
Doom and despair go hand-in-hand to serve your friends with it perhaps think on where that can lead.
Bear in mind that being doomed to serve your "friends" may also come up in such terms. I tend to forget specific qualities of aspects, but I'm sure there's a list of them out there, look through the words in it, and combine them within your class, that says what your powers would be like alone.
i suppose your not asking me but here's my 2 cents on the knight of doom, i like the way the way OD describes the aspect of doom so i may use it as a reference point here. Also understand that my understanding of a 'Knight' is based partly on what i think and I've seen through OD's video's so it may not be entirely like how you think it. A knight is one who serves there aspect or serves via there aspect so a knight of doom might either serve there aspect by streamlining the intended fate/arc for a character; whether that be streamlining there suffering, there end as a relevant character or there concurrence with the rules/constraints of said characters journey. It could also be taken as one who serves through doom so perhaps one who serves another through *bringing the end* to another characters relevance or via reminding the party that there actions will decide whether or not they make or break there session and enforcing the importance of constraint within the party lest it lead to a negative fate.
also for whatever reason knights seem to appear where there aspect is lacking i think, so maybe part of there role will be to enforce constraint amongst a number of players that unsparingly go ham within there desire to preserve or destroy respectively. The knight of doom may also play a more heroic role perhaps eventually slaying a dragon or solving a problem via serving doom. So perhaps they go through a ton of suffering to achieve the result they must, or that it is through there suffering that they gain the tools they need to slay the dragon, though this might require that they slay the dragon for an individual other than themselves as they're not directly serving doom through this action. This last thought may seem a bit strict as I'm trying to differentiate between a knights actions and another classes actions as solving a problem through doom serving them sounds like a more page-y thing. Though as an individual or when creating a character its important to recognise a class can act out of there direct classes actions by role playing another or simply holding the knowledge of how to do so, so this may not always be necessary.
Anyhow thats my 2 cents

My first thought wasn't that the Life symbol looks like snake tails, but I did notice that the Breath symbol looks pretty much the same as the previously mentioned. Not identical, but very very similar.

Y'know I gotta admit, hearing how you explained the Rage aspect finally explains why I actually tend to refer to alot of my life as a "Play" more often than not. Between feeling the need to play the role of a Referee between friends or family members, taking on roles as needed to try and make the world work somehow, and even considering most of what I do an "Act" to keep the peace in my own life, it suddenly makes sense that, as a Mage of Rage, my aspect is meant to be about what you can make the world or yourself feel through your control of it. It's fascinating!

In the aspect test the duality of hope and rage is perfect. When I did the test I got caprinius. The hope aspect but the class sign of the rage bound. This might suggest that your aspect is skewed by your sign class. A hope bound purple sign would see the hope, possibilities and dreams of everyone and themselves while laughing at the futility of existence. They can be summed up in one sentence: “Laugh at life then laugh at yourself for laughing at a concept that doesn’t reply then cry about it and swear to make it better”. Reminds me of that scene from doctor who. He says that “the good things don’t make the bad things any less hurtful and the bad things don’t make the good things any less worthwhile”.

My take on the Hope vs Rage duality:
Hope vs Rage = Eros vs Thanatos / Construction vs Deconstruction / Attraction vs Revulsion / Desire and Joy vs Anger, Fear and Disgust / Yes vs No / Seduction vs Provocation / Sex vs Violence
As elements of narrative, Hope vs Rage relates to the emotions and responses inside (character) and outside (audience).
Hope to characters is what drives them forward and motivates them, it is everything they want to obtain or seek to preserve. Rage to characters is everything they dread and hate, triggering responses of flight or fight. Where Hope draws you in and invites you to embrace it, Rage provokes and goads you into violence.
To audiences, Hope is related to overall enjoyment of a story, be it by feeling immersed or simply entertained. It is also related to hype, the yearning for more content, and fan-service, when the story tries too hard to please the audience at the detriment of it's integrity. At it's worst, Hope manifests as propaganda, changing and reinforcing worldviews with an underlying agenda, very manipulative. Rage is every time a story makes you feel "bad", be it the tragedy inflicted upon characters, or the breaking of immersion, or even more impactfully: when a narrative directly offends you or makes you doubt your own worldview, because Rage is quite inflammatory.
At it's most vulgar, Hope is sexual and erotic content while Rage is violent and bloody content, both extreme and grotesque manifestations of these aspects may label something NSFW.

Fire has always evoke both meanings of life, destruction end rebirth from the ashes, the colors green is to mark it more with earth, health and plants.

Vines? Interesting. Like I say flame are connected to the circle of life by the duality of it, plants give majorly the "Give life part", Fire is link with heat and light, it can harm and destroy, but is also needed for life to surge, and specially the cycle of rebirth. Forest catch fire on their own for a reason, is all part of the circle of life and nature. Maybe is ambiguous in purpose? At the end only Hasie can answer what the origin thought of it was.
@@ericquiabazza2608 Doom is very much connected to fire, actually. It is dangerous, it destroyes, and in consumes energy, leaving only ashes. Rebirth from ashes is the intentional fusion of Life and Doom.
An important thing to note: the moral duality of Life is a theme of the aspect, not characters manifesting it. Neither Feferi nor Meenah cared about the reasons for their actions (which Meenah explicitly described as the difference between her and Aranea), they just do the things they want.
But the things Life players want could be very good or very evil.

Y'know, i actually got life the last time I took the extended zodiac quiz, and in light of learning about life players' good-evil moral judgement thing that actually makes a lot of sense, given that I've been worrying a lot about wether I've been making a positive or negative impact on the world lately.
So, wait, Hope is supposed to be about optimism...but it involves lying to others and oneself, which led all three known Hope Players down a road that wrecked shit for their friends. How does that work?
@@ThousandViewpoints That's really kind of depressing :( The worst part? I can sorta see why he'd do it, being a Page myself. But, well, I actually WANT to try and do stuff, even if it's hard, just to see if I can do it.
The thing with the hope aspect is that it's the power belief. It doesn't matter if the thing you believe in is actually supported by evidence or not or even if there's evidence to the contrary. This can get dishonest real quick which can be harmful if it gets out of hand.

is it wrong to be scared of personally being a witch of doom? i mean, the first sentance about doom is literally: "Those bound to the aspect of Doom are fate's chosen sufferers", and my class, being witch and all, is *_literally terrifying._*
I think that it may also be important to look into each aspect’s yin/yang dynamics and see how they can and do oppose and compliment one another. Some key principles of yin and yang is how each contains a bit of the other, how one cannot exist without the other and that one can learn a lot about something by studying its opposite alongside it through compare and contrast. We did get a bit of that with Light and Void, but I’d like to see more of that with the other aspects. I would’ve liked to see you explore the relationship between Life and Doom aspects little more in depth than was talked about here, and I think a lot of interesting discussions could come out of going all out on the Yin Yangs. As well as possibly more insanity. *wonk*

After watching this video, I have determined that it is true that I am a life player, the extended zodiac quiz was right. Although I am still mulling over whether I'm an Heir or a Page. Either way, I feel that those two classes are the most likely to manifest an overpowering or pure form of the aspect.
I think life’s supposed to look like grass because plants usually represent life and such.
I feel awkward when telling my homestuck friends that i'm a Knight of Time because I get a lot of whiplash for "trying" to be like Dave Strider.

I was honestly thinking the same thing about the life symbol looking both like creeping vines and twin snakes while you were doing the show-and-tell of cherub reproduction in relation to life. GOD I live for this classpect shit,,,
I knew that you'd say that the duality of Rage is the Tragedy/Comedy masks. But it got me thinking :
As you mentionned, the Mutable Aspects have their own dualities (Rage has the Tragedy/Comedy masks, Life is morality/Cherubs, Doom is Yin/Yang. Although I don't see when you talk about Hope's duality). But would it be possible to have a "mutual" duality that the Mutable Aspects have in common ? If so, I think it could be Candy/Meat. Life and Hope could represent Candy (Trickster Mode, while it started with Jane, the Life player, was more powerful once Jake "joined", as they could see Roxy, even with the Ring of Void on her. And, if I'm not mistaken, Jake is the main figure of the Candy Epilogue [although I may be mistaken, as I couldn't finish Candy]), and Doom and Rage could represent Meat (Rose's Grimdarkness was brought by Doc Scratch, which is part Rage player. Sollux sent the Meteor to the Green Sun, and with the help of Aradia, sent it towards the Scratched Session. Gamzee knew Trickster Mode had to happen, and he probably had a hand in how it played out [I expect he's the one that brought the Alpha Kids to their Sacrificial Slabs]. Kurloz is the one that got Vriska's jacket, which is arguably a main component of LE's Cairo Overcoat). But each Aspect is not stuck as their "designated" part. After all, Gamzee is a big part of Candy, and Jane is a big part of Meat, as she is the "second main antagonist". I think, if the Mutable Aspects have a Mutual Duality, that each Aspect have a tendancy to be linked to either Meat or Candy (kinda like the Classes. They're not Gendered, I just consider them to have a "bias" towards one gender. Prince goes mainly to male players, but it's just a "preference", so a female Prince is still possible)
in your next video you should mention that considering the cold/hot and phisical/notional division all aspects at the bottom left are the most passive (and equally passive), top right are all equally the most active, mind and rage equally passive but not the most, and heart and hope equally active but not the most
and also mind and heart kinda break the trend and are the only aspects in wich the notional aspect is more passive than the phisical one
If we take the life symbol to be a pair of snake tails, then that would be even more confirmation that Joey is actually a life player isn’t it? With the cherub portal/key strongly linked to her and everything.

I'm not sure if I buy into the idea of the life symbol looking like snake tails. It would be more accurate to see them as a sprout and a fully formed plant side by side. If any symbol related to the cherubs it would be the /hope/ symbol. They look exactly like the pair of wings they sprout at adulthood. 6:33 shows them mirrored, and if you connect the wings together without the cherubs in between them, it looks like a feathery version of the hope symbol.
Hope also has seen a contrast between good and evil. Eridan's belief of what's right and what's wrong in regards to caste supremacy is enforced through his destruction. Jake also shows this faith in good versus evil where he is willing to pummel Meenah with his fists upon discovering she initiated the genocide of Earth as an alternate version of herself. Neither of them has much of a sway in their convictions between right and what's wrong. If anything, Jake would rather judge himself as good or bad based on his mistakes in his relationship with dirk instead of just admitting it had a lot of problems on both ends.

Wouldn't this mean that under the pretenses of this that Gamzee and Sollux should have had a relation in which Gamzee enables Sollux to either lash out or feed bad habits?

what about the blood casts?
shame this series doesn't touch on visual shared elements of the aspect zodiac, like how breath and life share the same basic symbol structure just with life being rotated, or how void is just the space symbol hollowed out. there's also themeatic pairs with blood and heart, and visual similarities like with hope and rage, as well as between mind and light. interestingly I find the visual, thematic and shared motif between time and doom the most interesting, as those two aspect do not share complimentary alignment in anyway you've presented, and yet it's so easy to link the two, even if we simplify doom to 'truth'. doom and time are instrinsically linked in the story, so the spiked skull vs the spoked cog seem coincidental at first, but honestly considering you can link every other aspect visually or themeatically and each and every one of those line up with some interpretation supported by text, it seems intentional that these disprit yet conected aspects would share visual element to key in on a relationship that is not put forth by traditional readings of how this zodiac is set up.

Wouldn't life be the opposite of bringing things to a end, and bringing things back? Life is all about healing and caring for others, and bringing people back from the dead (if powerful enough? Like a sylph of life chould probably do it). I'm still trying to figure out if I'm life or blood, because that's what the zodiac quiz is saying.

And life is his immortal life
i always thought the life symbol looked a lot like a sideways breath symbol but the snake tails makes sense too
