Hey y'all, this time around we talk about Karkat Vantas, his relationship to Blood, Abraxas, anime tropes, and Dave Strider. Sorry this one took so long! Life's gotten a lot busier recently, and I think I'm going to transition the channel into putting out fewer videos but making them considerably longer once they do come out. We'll see how it goes, but regardless, I really hope you enjoy this one!

As someone who started reading homestuck well after it finished, I had no idea fans wanted or expected anything violent or dramatic for Karkat. He's one my favorite characters because he's such a supportive grouch, so it means a lot to hear his praises sung for that.
Act 5 karkat was kinda the epitome of 12-year-old humor in 2010. All us youngins just saw shouty class clown talking big like he was the goku of the story. His arc kinda parallels the decline in interest in homestuck during act 6, actually, when everyone in the story was growing up enough to realize how heavy everything was. No one thought of homestuck as philosophical like we do today, it was viewed basically as the last slapstick adventure cartoon of pre teens, baby’s first fandom, before everyone stopped stigmatizing nerdiness or liking stories past 13.
@@Moonsong227 Reading this makes me glad I missed out on Homestuck at the height of it's popularity, cause there's a good chance I would've been swept up in that more shallow read, especially at that age. Thanks for the context ^-^
I absolutely love Karkat, and always have, because even when I was reading the comic for the first time when I was a teenager, I recognized that Karkat's anger never really correlated to violent impulses. Karkat's anger mostly came from frustration and worry. weirdly, I think Karkat's frustration is like that of a pacifist... not in the sense that Karkat would really self identify as a pacifist, but like... if someone has pacifistic beliefs, or even a pacifistic lean, they will inevitably carry a lot of anger over the existence of blatant, preventable injustice. there's a way to get along, it's very clear to them, and they can see people out there choosing not to do it. if everybody could just... _care_ about each other. if we could all just protect each other from harm. if we could all agree that that's the most valuable thing. but sometimes people are assholes. sometimes people choose violence, or exploitation, or some other loathsome thing over basic problem solving.
even among his own friends, Karkat's strongest impulse is just to take the reigns, tell everyone what to do, get all his ducks in a row, and keep everybody organized, and cordial, and alive. to him, that's the bare minimum. even though the fact that he pulled it off is actually really impressive. he thinks of it as the least he could ask for. he raises the whole group's standards for what constitutes an appropriate amount of concern for others. honestly... it makes all the sense in the world that Karkat and Kanaya always got along so well. Kanaya had a really strong reputation for being a good mediator, and whenever she and Karkat talk, it's always a pretty calm, respectful conversation all the way around. the two of them are frequently on the same page, and I think that's nice.

i really hate how karkat's aspect is seen as useless. i can't stand the belief that caring about people makes you weak. in fact, it makes you incredibly strong, in my opinion. having the knowledge that the person you care about could leave you at any moment, but still persisting and loving and putting yourself out, is one of the bravest things you can do.
The blood aspect is as physical, as /real/ as can be.

I need to stop visiting these abandoned homestuck channels. My gay little heart can't take it much longer. well, at least I can pay respects. You and PGenPod were so consistently there in a time when I barely know how to contain or express my love for this media. You were a stabilizing force in my life during a tumultuous time of transition, and I can never thank you enough for that. @@taffydragon7323 Duelist hasn't abandoned the channel. If you check the Community Tab, he's going through a lot of money and moving troubles, so he probably just doesn't have the time to sit down, script, record, edit, render, and upload a video and might not even turn a profit. But from what I can tell he's still active on his Tumblr. It might be a while till he can upload again, but I'm sure he's working hard to try and do it again.

One of my favorite themes of Homestuck was always how there's a clear dichotomy between Importance and Power, and Happiness and Self-Fulfillment, and how incompatible they are: Most clearly demonstrated with Calliope, one version being incredibly powerful with an incredibly important job to do; but she's COMPLETELY isolated, and is honestly not even all that great or pleasant of a person, however noble her intentions might be. Meanwhile the other Calliope, explicitly has nothing to do or to offer to the plot or narrative; except live their life, spend time with the people they've grown close to, and enjoy themself.
So yeah, people that wanted Karkat to get strong and kick ass have definitely kind of missed the point. (As much as I do wish we could find out what actual, real Blood powers are like, beyond just the metaphysical themes they represent.)
The blood aspect is the single most mysterious aspect in the whole series as we never really get a fully realized Hero of Blood. But damn does Karkat get close.
His initial problem is with his views on relationships. Going into rants about the power of hate and his dismissal of love as mere pity. Which poetically mirrors many normal people's views on relationships too. Wanting only purely positive relationships and nothing negative. But the truth is that the Blood aspect encompasses both. Whether it is Blood brother or Blood rivals, the aspect causes us to grow as individuals as we are challenged and/or supported. It causes a person to define themselves by interacting with others and coming to understand them as well as their differences. This is through this they can change things in both great and small ways.
Take for example Karkat's greatest contribution to the alpha kids session. Getting his group to contribute to the John and his friends, at first as antagonists but eventually becoming allies. It is this act of connection that shapes the session into a successful one. And I truly believe that the one thing that will overcome the Ultimate Hero of Heart is the power of the Blood aspect.
Blood player here, squeeing, this is so nice. So often it seems like Blood embodies its own subtlety in the fandom to the point that it’s overlooked and thought of as the lame powerless aspect. You low key predicted some ideas I’m putting into a fanfic even.
This was actually pretty insightful and through provoking to read, thanks for writing it!

Let us go back to when a young Steven first releases Peridot from the bubble, and she finds herself having to adjust to life on Earth; maintaining a grumpy (albeit relatively harmless) attitude towards Steven.. who was far too delighted to meet her to be worried about potential threats or hostile behavior.
Now remember the conversations between Karkat and John in his early stages of SBURB. Karkat's frustration towards John, and Egbert's dorky innocence...
Exhibit A:
*Peridot refers to her hands and feet using alien terms such as "touch stumps" and "gravity connectors".
*Karkat introduced readers to many alien terms, including "think pan", "shame globes", and "load gaper".

*Peridot and Lapis bond over TV drama series and home-made "music for your eyes" they call "meat morps".
*Karkat and Dave bond over romcoms and Can Town.
It is with this evidence that I submit to the court that, in fact:
John is Steven,
Karkat is Peridot

Karkat is better than steven xd, he dosent sing for "solving" problems, he really want to help and tries his best for make everyone feel better and cares about their future. He helps the others to stand up and be the best version of theirself. In the other way steven only shuts the problem with songs and dont really try to really solve them.

because the fandom stretches everything so hard that somehow it makes sense over years and years of overanalyzing and melding headcanons into narratives to fix hussie's plot holes or neglected story points
I came for "Abraxian Tsundere" in the thumbnail and came away with a new appreciation for Karkat and...myself to a degree? I was one of the people who was disappointed that Karkat ended up being so wimpy and wished he'd end up cool and badass in the end and was sad about where he ended up. But if there's one thing that makes watching your videos an excersize in masochism for me it's how you remind me how little I actually understand about homestuck despite having read it twice now (both times were just me wanting to get to the end and understand the story and memes rather than actually getting it). You really recontextualized Kar's whole thing for me and you made me understand how powerful he actually is and who he actually is, the segment about the "epic speech" and your own reflections really communicated that to me in a way i really deeply understand and I love it. So I say to thee, thanks again for making me understand everything and nothing at once and for making awesome things. World might be going to shit but as long as there are guys like you around it's worth hanging around to watch. Take good care of self cuz youre doing a fine job.
God that ending hit me like a truck. I'm not going to lie, I've been desperate to hear some one else thinks the world will or is going to shit in the worst possible way. It's just hard, I hate thinking about how where I'm going to go in life because the only thing I can think about is how I might not even get a chance to settle down. I can't really avoid thinking about it either because, well, I'm 17 and I have a whole slew of things I need to get straight due to my autism and stuff. I'm just glad there's someone else out there that feels a similar way. Thank you.

Karkat is basically the nicest person in his version of Alternia, he is almost like a pacifist and he cares dearly about everyone he's met even if he says he hates them, he really doesn't and loves every one of his friends. x3

thank you , this is really deep and definitely covers Karkat really well - and it makes me want to be more like him . i dont know what the future will hold and i used to be optimistic but now im not so sure , it makes me both feel a little better and a little worse that all of us will face it together but seeing the part of him that cares deeply for his friends , and seeinf the people i know who care deeply abput their friends : gives me hope .

I was watching through lots of your videos today already, this upload is like an extra 4/13 gift!!
And here's what I'd like to say, now that I've watched this wonderful essay:
Isn't it one of the best messages one can share with their surroundings? A call to care for yourself, and for others? Doesn't it have so much more weight in a personal sense than a battlecry or a declaration of valor? I think that learning the value of personal relationships, of growth, of learning to heal and let heal is one of the greatest lessons one must learn in their lives.
I relate to Karkat in many ways, though not exactly the same ones. I have also been trapped in dark places and have had to rise from them again, to build myself up again. I've had to do the same for friends, and so seeing it represented in him is not just inspiring, but also incredibly validating. When you hit that kind of dark place, it can white literally feel like void around you and in you, like the world collapsing in on itself. Maybe because of this, the message in Karkat's story is one that feels so impactful to me.
After all, isn't a story in which the end of the world is just as climactic as the simple wish to live closer to the human experience than a simple power fantasy?

Gosh. Thank you, OD, from the bottom of my heart. Karkat is such an incredible character and you explaining his message in this video allowed me to recognize aspects of his character I subconsciously already knew about but couldn’t put a finger on. Your message at the end of the video gives me a glimpse of hope (ha, you have chosen your aspect wisely, well played) that not everything will be always bad, that I have to look out for myself and my family, and even though I miss my friends each day terribly, I have to be patient and kind. To myself, mostly. I relate to both Karkat and Dave in a very special way and watching this video made my heart melt.
Thank you for your videos oD. I've struggled with a lot of my own issues and it's nice to hear from someone who has gone through similar things.
I know homestuck and the surrounding concepts that it is built on/make up its lore and its classes/aspects are ultimately just fiction, but learning about it always helps me glean new insights into myself, how to view/engage with the world, people and how everyone/thing interconnects.
There's so little comprehensive information about the Blood aspect too, and since it's my hero aspect (Thief of Blood) it's really awesome to learn more about it and see all the nuances and ways it works/manifests. Thanks!
Side note. You putting your ideas out there is still making a difference. One person who views these at a time. It's not much. But every little bit helps. And with each person you spread the idea to it spreads further from them. I just thought you should know.

one of the things that im grateful openbound brought up (although it was in a very dismissive and annoying manner) is the role of matriarchy in troll society - a somewhat flipped version of the patriarchy that we experience in the real world. in that sense, i do think it is a sort of rebellious act that karkat embodies qualities that we typically associate with "femininity", things like being a mediator, solving conflict through pacificism, and leading people through emotion and passion rather than through bloodshed and violence. though people like vriska embody what we would typically associate with power, such ascending to the god tiers, i think its valuable that someone like karkat remains in the cast showing how powerful the sheer force of personality and interpersonal skills are. these are things that are often written off in the real world BECAUSE they are typically employed by female mythic figures, like cleopatra or helen of troy.

I cried
Karkat was from the start, and still is, my fave. His relationships with other characters made me like a lot of them much more cause in the exchanges with him we often see different aspects of the characters we usually don't see or haven't seen till that moment. The biggest example for me is obviously Dave. I didn't care a lot about Dave even tho I'm a little obsessed with time and time travel, so should have been one of my faves, but his relationship with Karkat made me care a lot about him as I started to see a much more human and complex side of him, and now he is my second fave. I know people really dislike Davekat but I really like that part of the epilogues is showing how these two really influence each other and how a different relationship between them can result in very different scenarios, for them and the world.

Anyone else notice a weird buzz with his mic? Whenever he talks I can hear a small static buzz that is very quiet but gives me headaches whenever I watch too many of these in a row. Otherwise great videos.
