hi mayuhina-san, it's an honor to listen to your experience about being maiko in kyoto. it always reminds me when i was watching this beautiful city through netflix series 'makanai'. i love how they are trying to politely charm visitors and show the beauty of gion and its surroundings. love it!

Good morning Mayuhina-San, Arigato gozaimasu for this very interesting video about the nuances of geiko and Japanese culture. It was so informative and interesting.
It was also very synchronistic! I had only just logged onto UA-cam and you had literally just posted, so perfect timing also 🙂
Sumimasen but I have a commitment so I must go but thank you again 🙏❤️

Having lived in Tokyo and NYC, the culture in these cities is on opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to being considerate of others. In Tokyo, some people were so considerate that it could come across as fake and meaningless. However, in NYC, many people don’t seem to even try to care about those around them. It’s very sad. I feel like somewhere between these two extremes where we can voice our needs while being considerate of others would be best.

Mayuhina-san, I love your videos because they're telling of a unique and admirable culture whilst bringing it to life for the viewer at the same time. However, when watching your videos, I always have the feeling that there are two sides to the reality of a geiko. You seem to have grown up in the US as a person of Japanese heritage. Would you may be like to talk about the balancing act between those two cultures or the balancing act between tradition and modernity in one of your videos? I think that training to become a geiko is a very honourable thing on the one handside, but also very hard on the other.
Would you like to talk about the challenges you faced? And where would you place yourself today as a person caught between two such different cultures and someone who is trying to balance tradition and modernity? Did you sometimes experience an inner conflict? I'm sorry if my questions are too direct. It is a genuine interest in your story that makes me ask.

@geikohina Thank you for your answer, Mayuhina-san. I am looking forward to your video. I think that we can learn a lot of things from you. Many things might come across contradictory at first, but it is through people like you that such old traditions stay alive. Could you maybe also tell about your motivation to actually get trained as a geiko?

I can only react and not share more value of your already well explained story. I am trying to show the respect needed in such discussions. I wonder if it is the value of minimalism to perform a MVA (minimal viable approach) where one could perhaps scale the understanding by triaging emotional intelligence, our ego and our awareness of our immediate surrounding in the end conducting empathy. It is almost like when ask someone: “do you understand what I am saying? The answer could be: “yes, I do. Do you understand that I am saying yes.” 😊 So a 3-way communication. Not to forget empathic sensitivity, cultural correctness and spiritual awareness. Again if one doesn’t communicate, how can the other person know? Also, we don’t know what we don’t know, especially in these days where we are eager to fill in the gaps. This need, I think is based on taught impatience by social media. Start simple and small with curiosity so we can learn and adapt, to be curious. As always, thank you again for your message.

      Hello Eric,
Yes--if one doesn't communicate, how can the other person know? I realized that as well.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts ✨

It's a noble and respectful thing to do, but in the wrong environment/company it can result in you being taken advantage of.
