“Not only in winter” which implies it should be eaten sparingly ALL YEAR ROUND. We can’t halfway read verses.

Excellent talk. Keep in mind the Lord has also cautioned many times that he'd prefer it if we didn't eat meat at all, except only when absolutely necessary such as winter (old days, we don't have food scarcity in the winter presently), famine, or drought.

Greg Williams I appreciate the baby steps in trying to get people to follow this commandment because most in the US at least, eat meat everyday.
However, I ask you why you or the church don't stress the part about FAMINE. Of coarse I don't ask you to speak for a whole organization but I ask why (you personally or anyone else reading this) think the church doesn't address and discuss this when it is seems clearly written (to my translation) that we should only eat meat if we have to as a last resort?

Thanks Adam, it is something to be discussed more thoroughly for sure. I know in the English version there is some discussion and even debate about whether that is really what it is saying at all. My friend Jane Birch has taken quite a bit of time trying to help folks understand that though. I didn't have the scope in this talk to cover every element and was just hoping to garner more serious interest for folks who may have never really considered this before. Check out Jane's work though!: discoveringthewordofwisdom.com/about/the-word-of-wisdom/wow-faqs/

It’s very confusing BECAUSE carbs are sugar which also cause plaques dementia etc. I’m a Latter Day Saint and I am a nurse. I’ll never ever understand. My parents are vegetarians and have had heart attacks etc but there are proven studies and living people healing themselves from no carb low carb carnivore diets. Gluten intolerance, diabetes, cancer etc with just eating vegetables and protein
Eating meat does not cause heart attacks it’s actually insulin from eating frequently and carbs that cause arteries to harden. Wheat may be the staff of life but with all the sprays and grain issues it causes a lot of digestive issues
So I’ll never ever understand one side more than the other because I see living proof on the adverse effects of carbs rice wheat potatoes corn sugar flour oatmeal spike insulin and that leads to other issues so it’s out there all the research cause inflammation cause obesity and diabetes
Please don’t come back at me in the comment section because I’ve seen it all and heard it all and I was a vegetarian for 10 years myself. I’m simply saying I’ll never understand the wheat part the eat meat sparingly part when I see all the sick people.
I loved being a vegetarian I also love eating meat who knows. I think a low carb diet is best in my humble opinion

I've been carnivore for 4 months now, off insulin and metformin. Lost 35 pounds without trying. Eat meat with lots of fat, and only eat carbs/grains in times of famine, winning combo. This video on Word of Wisdom Eating/Evidence is complete misinfo interpretation in my personal revelation. See Dr. Berry and Proper Human Diet. Arguing against the word of wisdom thinking one has new knowledge or sees benefits from things like keto etc compared to what the Lord presented shows a lack of faith and a misunderstanding. Yes those things work, but it’s not what He’s asked us to do or the method He prescribed. Just my two cents.

I love this video. God gives us his examples of what “sparingly” means; eating meat only in times of winter, cold, famine, or excess of hunger, meaning to me that it’s purpose is as a supplement to our diet when our dietary needs are unfulfilled or lacking. The way I see it, here in the United States where healthy plant-based foods are cheap and easily accessible where our dietary needs are easily met through a plant-based diet, and where our government subsidizes meat so it is cheaper and therefore consumed at a much higher rate than most other countries, we have more responsibility than others to consume less meat than, say, someone who I met from Brazil who can’t afford a lot of healthy foods because they are only available in the expensive canned form. It depends on the person’s circumstances.

It's hard to change habit and it's even harder to change lifestyle. Some people will come around in this life and some people just won't. It's our duty to love them anyway

It’s Ironic, our brothers and sisters in the Seventh Day Adventist church don’t have the WOW but are one of the healthiest populations on the planet. One of the Blue Zones Loma Linda, California. Their tenet is the body is the temple of our spirit and to take care of it. Thus they eat predominately plant based. We also as members believe in this tenet, but somehow have not understood the consequences of not following its wisdom. The same with the WOW. Members have missed the most important part, The Lord said I prefer they (animals) NOT be USED. but he knows there may be circumstances like famine and extreme cold winters. Although these days modern transportation can usually get food anywhere in the planet.
Loved your info on the abuse of water and land resources being used in Animal Agriculture. It’s killing the planet more than all carbon output of all forms of transportation combined. Thank you for an excellent presentation.

God also never said we need to eat sweets, empty carbs, lots of processed foods at at ever freakin church function either. I wish the word of wisdom said something about eating sugar “very” sparingly. That would be extremely helpful. Sugar and processed carbs are just as much a contributer to the metabolic diseases that are killing people in America.... particularly obesity and type 2 diabetes. Nobody seems to care about the damage that does peoples bodies. They celebrate all these cookies, cakes as gifts...as if these foods are one of the pleasurable things God has given church member to indulge in as a substitute for other “forbidden” indulgences. Eating less meat and especially cutting out the red and processed meats is a no brainer. The science is very clear as well as the lethargic way these foods make you feel after eating them. But regularly eating lean protein sources such as salmon, chicken, and turkey breast balanced with some legumes, WHOLE grains, and lots of whole fruits and veggie is the winning combo. Anybody that eats this way and cuts out red, processed meats, processed carbs, and sugar will lose ALWAYS lose weight and their “lab values” will show that they are healthy. There are of course rare exceptions with people who have food allergies and intolerances. So these specifics need to be pointed out. All the sugar that members eat leads to diabetes which drastically increases ones risk of heart disease. It would be extremely helpful to the overall health of church members to eat less processed and red meat but also less sugar and processed foods in general. We need to look at the big picture and be telling the whole truth.

    1. Last year, i lost 25 lbs eating meat only
    2. On calorie restriction one could lose weight on donuts only diet.
    3. "Use" does not = "eat"
    4. "Sparingly" has been interpreted to mean "sparingly of the life of the animal" (Hugh Nibley and also Pres Benson), which is consistent with D&C 49 where it also says to have meat in "abundance"!
    5. Last I checked, plants require far more water than animals. Poor African children😢. Eating plants takes away their water.
    6. Timothy in New testament warns against those who say to abstain from meat in the last days. Not of God.
    7. We are currently in a "nutrition famine". Just visit your local walmart.

@@Gdubwizz I forgot which Elder said it but they said Mormon’s biggest mistake and sin was writing slanderous material about the Lamanites and didn’t love his enemies. The Word of Wisdom is also not a commandment or meant to be restrictive. Carnivore diets have helped many people with auto-immune disorders, like celiac disease. Plants have anti-nutrients and other things that harm the human body, like gluten. The truth is that no one knows how we should eat and that it’s a personal journey like a spiritual journey is with Christ.
