Thanks James, your video was done perfectly, everything needed and nothing that wasn't needed. Just did a Kenwood unit into an 05 Subaru Forester 2.5 litre turbo everything was the same other than colour of wiring at the column instead of orange/white and puple/white it was pink and light blue from the same location and pinout as in your video. Very helpful, cheers for sharing.
Even some years after it has been very usefull to me on a French Outback 2005. I could avoid an interface to connect the existing resistive SWC to a KW-M745DBT JVC DIN2 radio. The only thing has been to be sure which jack terminal was the "pin1" supposed to connect to purple/white : the pin 1 / key 1 is the top contact of the jack. Anyway I have been successful, thanks to your excellent tutorial !
Wow, thanks a lot man, now i have one step closer. But only one step.. i found orange/white and purple/white wires and thats good. but there is funny thing, if i measure them with multimeter, if im doing it right (i put plus to one wire and minus to other) than it shows change in omms only when i push mute or volume buttons, but dont work fo another 3.
I love you You safed my head from going nuts, I have no clue why it’s like that and what those engineers smoked. THANKS SO MUCH BUDDY. Greeting from Germany
I used an old aux cable and extended it with very thin wire, all you need is a multimeter to find which wire is ground and input one from the aux cord and soldering stuff to attach it
Thanks for this video... I did this with a Joying android unit... but you need to connect one of the pairs to the Key1 wire and the other to Ground (that allow the +5V output from key1 to go through the various resistance from a key press to ground). Oh.. on a Forester 07 model..
I connected to the Subaru wire to the wire that went to the tip (red I think). ie connected to base and tip I do not think it matters if you use red or white for the second connection as radio will sense during setup.
i didn' t find how to wire up key1 and key2 to steering wheel control unit correctly on subaru forester 2009. after trying many times i found it. key1 to green-red wire, key2 to yellow and black cable together, just this.
Hi James, I'm doing the same to my outback, just a quick question, does that 20 pin plug still need to be plugged in to the original stereo ?? or do I just leave it unplugged ??, Thanks mate, love your channel. 👍👍
My steering wheel control adapter came with a pre-wired plug that I've had to cut off - is the tip or the middle ring on the 3.5mm adapter the one I want for input 1 (doing a sinilar thing with a Pioneer head unit in a late 4Gen Liberty that used to have a McIntosh head unit)?
Have you had any luck with this one, Robert? I'm also trying to get a pioneer head unit (Z5050BT) into my 4GEN with McIntosh (MY06, pre-facelift). I've wired pin 3 (purple/white on car side) to the tip of the connector, and pin 9 (orange/white on car side) to the sleeve (the bottom) Steering wheel control settings menu is greyed out (made sure the parking brake sensor wired up and the parking brake is on, as the manual says this is required to open this menu). I am going to try moving pin3 to the ring (the middle) of the 3.5mm connector next weekend.
I emailed Pioneer about this and they linked me to this video (sigh). After some more forum diving, it seems that pin 3 and 9 on the main 14-pin harness of McIntosh equipped cars are digital signals: There is apparently a component called the "LAN Module" that converts the resistive steering controls (which can be accessed from the white connector underneath the wheel, like in the video) to this digital signal. It might be a CAN bus but I can't confirm. In that case, you could convert it back to resistive signals with a CAN bus shield equipped Arduino, but it would be very complicated. Looks like the way to go is to tap into the wires at the location in the video (under the steering column) and run them to the centre console, making sure to disconnect those wires the LAN Module so that it can't interfere with the signal.
Perfect video, but... how do i keep my cruise control working? Now when wires are disconnected from LAN module, cannot actovate cruise. Really no chance?
hey mate. I have tired this on a 2004 outback with a JVC headunit with no luck. the JVC steering wheel harness has 2 inputs and a ground wire. . Cheers Geoff
JVC head units don't have a built in steering wheel decoder like pioneer. Those wires are meant to go to an external interface like an Axxess ASWC-1 or PAC
Sweet as that awesome info. would I still use the orange/white purple /white wire under the steering wheel to the going in to the Pac interface?. thanks for replying too!!!
Cheers mate I finally got it all working. I brought a axxess aswc-1. I used the orange white and purple white subaru wires. I had to ground P/W wire with the module wire. and had to manually program the axxess aswc-1 module which was challenging for me lol The 2005 outback is auto program and I have the 2004 . Cheers for your help really I couldn't find any relevant information that worked and o appreciate your video . so job done and I'm really happy
Hi, Nice walk through on the steering wheel setup. How would you identify a receiver that has built in steering wheel decoder. Or do you have options of receivers (double din) that have the decoder built in??
Hi James, Great video! Do you know if the same procedure will work for a Subaru Forester 2006? And did you use the Axxess ASWC-1 in the video? I'm about to install a pioneer sph da120.
Daniel Nielsen I didn't use the aswc1 because the pioneer deck I installed had a built in resistive steering wheel control decoder. Not sure about the forester sorry but if under the steering column you find the same coloured wires, I'd say there's a good chance of them being the wires you need.
Hi James, thank you very much for your answer. I will look for the same wires on my Forester. Also I guess I need to figure out if the Pioneer SPH DA120 has the built in resistive steering wheel control decoder. Do you know what Pioneer calls the function?
Great video. Nicely done! [Updated] In some older Legacys/Libertys/Outbacks, the factory SWC wires go into a box Subaru's wiring diagrams call the "LAN Module". That converts from the resistive SWC buttons to digital signals that the OEM head unit can use. For anyone who would like to know more about that, see this thread on the Legacy forums: legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/steering-wheel-interface-my04-outback-132373.html (scroll down to around post #23 and beyond for wiring diagrams and pictures of the module). In later models, and some of the older models, the factory SWC wires are connected directly from the buttons in the wheel to one of the harnesses that plug into the back of the factory head unit. In these models, you should find the violet/white and orange/white wires there, and you won't need to hack into wires at the steering column. Aftermarket harnesses are available to connect to the factory plug behind the HU, so you won't need to hack into wires at that end either.
SVXdc, if my original 13 STI (auto) steering doesnt have the audio controls and i replace the steering with a one that does have the audio controls and bluetooth, how do i make it work?
Haven't tried them sorry, at work I mainly use Axxess ASWC-1 universal interface and Connect-2 products. Or in the case of a Japanese car I recommend the customer gets Pioneer stereo because as you saw, I don't need to use an interface because there is one built into the stereo. Not sure if this helps you but hopefully :)
Yes, a PAC module (or Axxess ASWC, iDatalink Maestro, Connects2, or any other steering wheel interface module) will work, once you connect to the wires as James did (including disconnecting the car's LAN Module to prevent interference). The steering wheel buttons themselves are identical to those found in subsequent Subaru years.

Thanks James. This saved me heaps of time. Now have a Kenwood nicely installed in my '03 Outback.
Thank you, 3 years I have mulled over this problem. Top man for finding the solution

hey mate, im looking to do the same with my 2006 turbo forester. did you use a steering wheel control patch lead?
Thank heaps. It was a real problem. With your help got my new headset working great.

Which wires did you tap into!! Needing help with mine!!
How would i wire up 2008 Subaru impreza steering controls to an aftermarket stereo?
Should be same
Hi james what’s the colour code for Subaru Impreza 2009 non turbo?
Is this the same for the 2008 subaru legacy?
So the adaptor has 3 wires red, white and black. Black ground goes to orange/ white. But what is the first input wire? Red or white? Cheers
I connected to the Subaru wire to the wire that went to the tip (red I think). ie connected to base and tip

This would work for a Subaru Forester 2010? have not decided the brand yet on stereo

Thanks for sharing. What kind of head unit do you have? I have a Pioneer Double Din AVH-A205BT on a 2008 SH Forester
What’s the colour of the first Input wire that the purple wire connects to the white or the red not shore

@@m1llie_: not as yet. I ended up having a dud Pioneer head unit (dead front left channel) which I had to send back for replacement.

yea I would, i have no idea what type of weird signal comes out of that black plug but it aint standard.
I will order one and have a crack. Cheers

How would you identify a receiver that has built in steering wheel decoder. Or do you have options of receivers (double din) that have the decoder built in??
I kind of just know that from a certain series of pioneer on, they all had it.
You can check by going into the System Menu and looking for "S Remote".
Do you think this a would work on a forester that doesn't have steering wheel controls
6 months after my head unit install I finally have working steering wheel controls 🤯
How do you get the power for the new Radio?

Doesn't look like it has it sorry, you will need an interface
Like aswc-1 or PAC
Thanks a lot. Really appreciate your service! I'll look for a aswc-1 or PAC
Could you help me with trying to install a 08sti steering /w controls in a 04 Forester
only 3 of the 6 buttons on the steering wheel are programmable... did u find the wire for the "input 2" wire???
Iguess i have same problem, when in testing wores with multimeter, it works only with mute, an volume buttons. Dod you find why?
It worked exactely as described!
Thank you!!!!!
Hey man does it matter which input goes to each wire or they just get connected up
saved me again. thanks
Great video. Nicely done!
