- Details of the parts and function of a 9" Android Infotainment system in my 2005 Subaru Outback.
After filming this video, I was able to solve my issue with connecting to Android Auto by updating the software on my phone. So now that function is working great!
Please refer to my 7" installation for more details on the function:

Tried the Aux connection before but the audio was not that good. I connected directly to the speakers, resultant audio quality was way better. stock radio is left to just power on. Just to keep a normal look
Hi Andrew, could you tell me how you connected the audio directly to the speakers? Did you slice into the car's original audio wiring loom? I have the Macintosh system which is the post-facelift unit. Cheers!
@@alby5482 Yes. The unit come with its harness which will allow you to splice into the car's harness. in most cases like in the video the harness shipped with the radio is directly compatible to the car's stock headunit socket so no need for splicing.
Thanks so much for making this video. I ordered the same unit for my 2007 Outback and it arrived yesterday. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Can I use the stock cubby with A/C tubes for this (just pull those off and then cut to size), or do I need to buy something different to get the tubes needed to connect? Is the y-cable for the radio 1 male to 2 female? For the 2 USB cables and aux cable, did you go with a 3' or 6' length? I'm ordering the Android dongle and static arrestor this afternoon, backup camera on the way too. Basically going for your exact setup. Appreciate it!
The stock tubes and vanes are what you need to modify for fitment. The wiring harness that I built sends the Android unit's audio through the AUX system. The plug-and-play harness adapts the output from the Android unit to the stock amp/speakers (I believe) and disables the audio from the stock head unit. I didn't use it so if I'm wrong, someone please correct me. I used long USB extension cables, probably about 6 ft, but they're far more than needed. Depending on where you're going with the USB cables, you probably will do fine with 3'.
Sometimes I get a “Lost connection to rear camera” message on startup/park and occassionally in Drive. Toggling between these and Reverse eventually fixes it, but anyone have any idea why this is happening?
Hello, I know this is a long shot since the video is older, I have the exact same unit as you but I have plugged in all the cables and the unit works (Apple CarPlay) but no sound comes through the speakers, my stereo still has my audio through the stock radio station (Am/Fm) on the Macintosh unit. Any help would be appreciated
I see that you switch to Aux for your audio to work however I'm form Australia and we don't have Aux functionality. Has anyone had the same issue
@@isaacraggatt6456 I have the same problem!
Thank you for posting this video.
I have a 9 inch android system that i want to install, i like my cd player.
I got mine off Amazon
Greetings from Australia. Thank you very much for making your video. It's very helpful and gives me ideas on how to install an Android head unit in my ' 08 Liberty. I will be buying a Joying 10.5" single din unit to go into the cubby where you have installed yours and leaving the original McIntosh unit in place so I can continue to use my CD player. I am concerned with the wiring from the new head unit into the wiring loom that goes into the McIntosh unit, how did you do yours? Thanks in advance.
Hi. Thanks for the feedback. I have a response to a similar question in an earlier post. Please check that out.
can you get the functions of the inbuilt unit still? fuel economy, trip computer, voltage, service intervals etc?
Maybe. You can either find a place to mount the stock display visibly or you can find an OBD2 program that will show that information and an OBD2 reader.
Thank you !!
Thanks for watching!
Hi, was it difficult to connect audio from unit to AUX? I Like the option of using stock radio too
It's very straight forward. Source audio out from the head unit goes into the aux audio in.
@@justaddafan could you go into more detail on this? Did you have to modify your harness to run audio through AUX?
@@novakskowronski5205 Hi. The Android unit has RCA plugs for it's audio output. Use an RCA to 3.5mm jack cable to run into the 3.5mm aux input cable of the stock head unit. Then when you want to listen to the Android, you press the "AUX" section of the dial on the head unit.
Done that but no sound comes out via stock radio.
I'm missing a setting some where
If i have aux button on my radio, but i dont have aux input in my car will my new android head unit work? (I have aux button, no input port in my car, nothing happens when i press aux button)
Just plug cables and im good to go?
Thinking about instaling android unit with carplay, but im confused if it will work if audio comes from aux input..
How does your radio get the aux input if there is no audio connection? You can either bypass the audio of you stock stereo and use the Android Head unit or you need some kind of aux audio input.
@@justaddafan can i send pictures of my radio somewhere?
I have aux button on my radio, but there is no aux input anywhere in my car. I know input is suposed to be in elbow rest between front seats but there is just plastic and no hole for input.
So im trying to figure out if i could get carplay or bluetooth working if i dont have aux input in my car from factory
Did you have any problems with the passenger airbag light ? Since the indicator is in the old vent unit ?
Yes, you have to keep the LCD screen plugged in to avoid the light. It's tucked in the cubby behind the Android unit on my car.
Sir, can this afterarket androids to read ssm cable? I have 2005 JDM Legacy and I would like to launch apps like BtSsm, Torque or even Romraider with USB to OTG
I don't know, sorry.
Did you ever get the steering wheel controls to interact with the andriod system?
No, I haven't done that.
@@justaddafan finally got mine working! Posted a short video on how to hook it up if you're interested
Thank you!
Hopefully it's helpful. Thanks again for pointing out the issue.
How do you find the air flow of the air conditioning through the vents ? Does it hinder it at all/is the highest fan speed the same as the stock vents?
The flow is still really strong. The problem is that directing is less effective. It mostly wants to just come straight out.
I must have missed who the manufacturer and model number of the Android Infotainment system you are installing. I would like to find a 7" version. Thank you.
These are offered by many different manufacturers so I don't have a specific model to give you, sorry.
I finally got around to installing it this weekend. Do you happen to know the password for the "Factory Settings"? I didn't see anything included with the unit and am unable to change an settings (speed, etc.). Appreciate it.
Try 8888
You could explain how to pass the main unit through the axuliqr of the android, that is to say, the reverse of what you did..
Interesting idea. Not a route that I would go.
@@justaddafan Why wouldn't you take that route?
@@desayuno_ The biggest reason is that I like to have the volume knob.
@@justaddafan Could you teach me how to pass the audio from the original radio through the android auxiliary?
What would you say the audio of this unit is like compared to stock, and great video thanks :)
Thanks for the kind feedback. The radio reception isn't as good as stock, so in that case the stock system is better. But it's mostly the same as stock because it runs through the stock system.
Thanks for this video!
Thanks for the thanks!
Well done, where did you order this Infotainment system ?
Mine came from Ebay
Can i message you somewhere? I want to ask a few questions and show some pictures about instalation
I don't really have a way of being privately contacted through youtube. If your car is an Outback/Legacy, I'd post the question to one of the facebook groups or forums. If you want to post a video of your car and put the link here, I'd be happy to take a look.
@@justaddafan i think i figure it out. Watched your video more carefully, you did extra step to make your screen play thru aux, i wont do that so my should bet just plug to plug and im good to go.
I hope thatshow it works 😀
Anyways, ordered a screen already, i will figure it out somehow
Why use the stock radio for audio at all? I'd rather use the android unit for output using its much better output and dsp to amps and speakers.
That's certainly an option. My goal was to not install additional stereo equipment as it's not necessary to upgrade for me. Also, the radio reception of the Android is not as good as the stock system. Additionally if you or anyone wants the option of listening to a CD, the stock system is needed.
I cannot get my stock system to run. New unit direct to speakers and it appears radio must run thru aus on new unit but this does not work
I also like the idea of maintaining the function of the stock radio.
Any chance you could describe or send diagrams of how you wired your system to benefit all of us?
I want to put in the Android system and maintain functionality of everything else
Link product?
I'm not affiliated with any sellers.
Can you link the one you bought, its scary trying to decide which one to buy with no reviews on any.
@@xynado Hi, thanks for watching. I bought mine a couple years ago. It's not listed any more. But they are probably all built by the same company.
