If you need a new phone every year you have a problem. The amount of money saved waiting every 3-4 years would make more sense. Rather than getting small updates each year. I keep all my phones.
Apple just sucks with their trade ins. I pay nothing and sometimes get money back when I bundle my Samsung and tablet and upgraded each year. I have both Android and iPhone and haven’t found a good enough deal to justify upgrading my 13 pro max.
Use my strategy, keep your phone as long as possible by taking good care of it. I am still on an iPhone X and I will be upgrading next year. Thats nearly 8,400 dollars saved. I also use the cheapest T-Mobile plan at $18 per month, since I have free WiFi at work and its included with my rent at home.
You’re wrong, 8400$ is money you paid to buy new phones, but you also have to deduct the money you sell. Here is better detail: If you do a trade-in every time you upgrade (assuming your iPhone is new enough), If you upgrade every year, you're paying 550$ per annum. If you upgrade every-other year, paying 310$ per annum. Every 3 years, paying 250$ per annum. Every 4 years, 225$. Every 5 years, 206$. Every 6 years, 180$. Every 7 years, 164$. Every 8 years, 150$. Every 9 years, 133$. Every 10 years, 120$. So if you buy iphone 17 next year (8 years) you save (550-150)x8 =3.200 compared to upgrade every year, and (250-150)*8=800 $ compared to upgrade every 3 years.
I just bought a 15 to replace my Xs max, never trade just pay cash. There is no reason to upgrade every year. Financing your phone for life like all these people constantly do is a losing proposition financially. What do I know though, I don’t even go to Starbucks every day and buy a $10 terrible coffee. 😂😅😂
@@nguyendinh2052I bought the iPhone X used on eBay for $500, I used it and sold it for $350 and bought the iPhone 12 mini refurbed on eBay for $500, I used it for 3 years and sold it for $325, I bought the iPhone 13 mini refurbed on eBay for $360. Still using it.. plus my carrier bill is $25 a month for unlimited. I think I’m paying was less than $500 a year for a phone
Correct! I mean, heck, even if you buy the iPhone at full price and then sell it yourself, it still is like you’re renting the phone for a year. In a way, you kind of rent everything, right?
@@StetsonDoggettI bought my 13 pro max straight from Apple Store unlocked and I have T-Mobile family plan 7 people we pay $220. Month that’s like $31 per person which is a good deal. I still have my 13 pro max and don’t upgrade til I see changes which is rumored for iPhone 17 (ultra, air)
I have been on the iPhone upgrade program since the iPhone 12 Pro Max dropped. Not once have I taken advantage of it. Usually there’s a family member that is willing to buy my iPhone since they are pretty much brand new and always in a case. Usually I can sell it and get enough money to pay off the loan and take care of the down payment and first month on the new iPhone. One thing to note is that when you sell on Swappa or eBay you now have to verify your identity with your Social Security number and if you gross over $600 in a year you get sent a tax form for you to pay taxes on your gains. I don’t sell on Swappa or eBay anymore because of this. That and I don’t want to give my Social Security to PayPal.
I have not used PayPal in a long time and was just looking at Swappa. I don't give out my Social to any company like that so i'm glad I found your post. I have a FanDuel and won the first year and to get my money they wanted my SS# so I just played the next year and still have money sitting there.
You are still taxed for the full cost of the new iPhone with trade-in directly at an Apple Store. If you buy with an Apple Card, you don't get the full 3% cash back, just 3% of the amount value after trade-in.
That's my mistake, thank you for the correction! When I was doing my research online I found an Apple forum post that said you only paid tax on the reduced price of the iPhone. I guess that was mistaken!
@@StetsonDoggett That was my experience. Not sure if others had the same experience with them. If you want to save 100% on taxes go to Delaware, Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Zero sales tax there!
The one thing you didn't factor in, is that if you buy out your phone, you can also trade it in after the fact, probably for a very large amount of money. At least 600 bucks or so. That would have brought basically all of the plans on the same exact ballpark. Even though it's complicated
People will not do the new phone deals every year because Apple phones are wash rinse and repeat for at least 3 to four years, nothing new.. so no point getting the new model. Example iPhone 15-iPhone 16!!!🙁
I got the best deal. I kept my 12 for almost 4 years and just upgraded. I don’t need a new phone every year. And honestly, if it wasn’t for the battery, I’d still have it. I’d rather use that money on investing. I did the math and my phone cost me about $18 a month for the 4 years. I don’t care about what other people think or looking broke as some of the people have stated in these comments. That is a ridiculous mindset. If you care what everybody thinks about your old phone, then you have bigger problems.
One other thing, is the fact that swappa would charge you almost $100 in fees. Bringing you within $50 of your Apple trade in anyway. If you sell even over $600 on swappa, you would probably get a tax form at the end of the year now.
The $800 estimate I used included estimated platform fees and shipping costs! I was assuming a $910 list price. Swappa fees are 6%. PayPal fees are another 3%. And shipping costs with insurance and a signature is roughly another 3%. $910 - ($910 x 0.12) = $800.80. There are a lot of variables though. I just sold my iPhone 15 Pro Max on Swappa, and I got a payout of $858.44. I then spent $15 on shipping. You’re absolutely correct that the fees add up, but I’m still a fan of the overall experience. Hopefully this is helpful!
I appreciate the care that went into making the math make sense. I have to break these numbers down on the daily, so I know how exhausting checking your work can be. 👍🏻
Went from US Mobile to Boost for my 16 pro, only $65 a month with no trade in or money up front is what sealed the deal for me. Plus i sold my 14 for $366 online, so basically 5 months for free 🙌
After how long can you keep it? You could’ve just financed it through Apple directly 0% APR for 24 months and kept the U.S. mobile $25 line for the same price or less
@@ballooneyjr4294 Yeah it would’ve been $2 more a month, but then I’d have to trade in for the new one every 12 months and possible lose money so I figured this was just an easier process.
I got my 15 Pro Max in June for $726. $30 x 24 months. Cellphone plan is $25 x 24 months for 50gb and unlimited calls and texts and a few perks. I own the phone after 24 months at no extra cost and get to keep my cheap plan. It was a loyalty discount though
This was an incredibly insightful piece you put together here! Your delivery had a great cadence, and actually allowed for me to process the information as you explained it. Excellent work overall.
The open 24 month plan with the option of switching a phone every year is best. In the end, paying around ~480 total a year for the phone, switching to the latest every September.
In terms of carrier deals I feel like it would be better to include how much people are paying monthly on their service on average, consider family plans and so on. Factoring in the cost of the plan is a bit weird considering most people have to pay a phone bill regardless. There’s a ton of variables here that are missing. 🤷🏾♂️
Yeah if you have the Apple Card but who knows what’s going to happen when GS sells it to JPM. It’s a totally useless card tho so I’m not sure how many people watching videos like this would have it.
The fact is that you DO NOT need to upgrade every year. That is a complete waste of money as phones do not get significant upgrades every year. Upgrading every 3 years is optimum, saving you money and giving you significant upgrades. For example, iPhone 13 Pro Max still holds up well and is still a beast today. You can sell the phone for about 50-70% of its original value on aftermarket and buy the new phone. Without the limitations of different plans, you can even choose to switch to other phones, not upgrade and stay on your phone or switch to other plans if desired. Sticking to the same plan and upgrading every single year is simply NOT WORTH IT.
If you get a crack in the glass, all of this planning goes right out the window. Former ATT next up customer. Ask me how I know. Their entire goal is to keep you locked into their highest value plans for as long as they can. This is the side effect of ending the legacy 24 month contracts.
Why are the buy out costs added in? If you buy out your phone, you can sell it for a good chunk of money maybe almost recover the entire buyout cost if the phone is recent. That should be factored into the carrier deals that require to buy our every year and their price will come down.
Love this idea! But the thing is, if you sell your phone then you won’t have a phone to use for the trade-in deals. So you wouldn’t be eligible for the $1,000 off promotions. You’d effectively just be buying and selling yourself, in which case considering a prepaid carrier with a lower monthly cost will be substantially more affordable.
It would be nice to know how all this would be effected by an ATT First Net plan or any other carriers that offer First Responder or Veteran discounts.
I love this video. Please do this every year. I’m on iPhone upgrade program but have to switch to Tmo for a month because Apple doesn’t allow MVNOs. I’m on US Mobile annual unlimited.
You got pretty close to the best deal for 4 lines, it’s definitely AT&T, but ask for a business plan. technically don’t even need to create an LLC to have a sole proprietorship “business” anyways, if you ever sold things on fb marketplace, you technically own a business. The 4 lines is slightly cheaper, and you get $360 per port in credit, trade in of iPhone 12 minimum. With the port in credits the total cost is 120 before tax, and a better plan than the starter. You can also downgrade the plan a few months later if you don’t need the extra data etc, getting it to $100 month before tax
America runs on loans. Everyone gets a loan for everything. Not to brag, I’m still on an iPhone SE 2020 that I bought for 45€, and paying 3€ a month for 5GB and 500mins for my sim. (I’m on TIM carrier if ur curious)
@@Jonathan-do4qbwith 5 lines idk if it’ll make much difference. US mobile cheapest unlimited is $25 all taxes and fees included, compare price per line. The service is great and I have no complaints, never found myself without data or any slow downs in the past year I’ve been with them
Also the next up anytime isn’t worth it because there will probably be another free phone deal to take advantage of at the other carriers when your phone is paid off, unless you really can’t wait 2 or 3 years to upgrade
Honestly if you want an iPhone, just get the 13 Pro 128GB. It has the 120hz screen, that is what most people will actually want, and it's che cheapest option that can give you that. $500 on eBay for a "Like New" condition refurb. Basically the same as the 16 Pro anyways, but for half the price.
I buy IPhone every year since 2007, I always pay in full and sold the previous one, the last 3 years has been hard to sell IPhones because buyers are going to low ball you they want to buy a 15 Pro Max 512 for 500 , I remember I used to buy an IPhone for a grand used it full year and sell it 850 or 800, now selling a device locally on marketplace, Craigslist or other marketplace sites is tough, I believe it’s easier for people to buy phones from their carriers or from programs
Also to add with my other comment … if you do the boost plan that includes the phone you MAY be able to get it with the often discussed online rainbow sim which in theory won’t ever slow down cause it doesn’t really monitor data but if your bringing your own iPhone even if your in an area they the rainbow sim works they can’t use it on the $25 plan so after 30gb its worthless . And again the metro $25 plan has 10gb hotspot and doesn’t slow down much if at all after 35gb
Not correst at all! Im with Att The real way it works is they take that total and divide by 36 months , So my 512gb iphone 15 pro max was $1399 So $1399/36 months is $38.86 per month But the next up upgrade program had me pay $38.86 x 18 months for half of thr 36months of owning the phone then paid taxes based on the $1399 original full price which was like $117 for me Which is why i just paid $233 when up just upgraded cuz thats whats needed to make it to 18months of payments since it’s actually only been 12months with September to September So i only paid $816 for my iphone 15 pro max before upgrading to the 16 pro max Thats it
Att makes money on me now cuz they can take my $1400 iphone pro max that i pad $816 for which leaves $583 left owed but they can sell it as a refurbished iPhone for like $1000 making still $483 profit
My iphone 15 pro max died so i bought the Samsung a35 5g for 200 just until i have enough money for the Iphone 16 pro max. But i cant believe how good this phone is for just 200😮😮 and to be honest i love the software.
Best way to get iPhone upgrades 1. Get the iPhone 8-24 months into its release lifetime on a loyalty or seasonal discount under a financing contract coupled with a cheap plan (24 months) 2. Pass iPhone onto family member after 24 months to mitigate depreciation 3. Repeat step 1 and 2
I live in the mainland US and have had my number for years but with ATT selling their networks in Puerto Rico and the USVI my only choice is T Mobile if I want to keep my 787 number and use it on the mainland. Literally only got one choice
Sacrifice 1300$ 1400$ depending on storage make sure it’s a pro max then sell it on eBay offer up or market place public meetups faster usually get 850$ for 95% battery health each year since 12 n only pay 300$ I only do this cuz I am a heavy chip user games etc n also phone photography/videography so its worth it each year
I've had the 13 Pro Max for the past 3 years & I also had Next Up but I didn't end up using it & I just stuck to the 13 Pro Max. I'm going to trade it in now when it will be fully paid off in October to upgrade to the 16 Pro Max, but if I keep the Next Up Anytime, I'm going to make sure I use it in 1-2 years from now lol
I just clicked on this video I know a way take out a portfolio line of credit which right now is a 6.75% interest rate and if you borrow $1300 at the interest only amount you’d need to only pay $7.31 per month while the $2600 portfolio continues to appreciate when the new phone comes out sell the old one buy more Vti and repeat
Are you sure the pro max is the most popular iPhone? I feel like I’ve read the base models outsell the pros by quite a bit but I am not that well informed in phones.
I think you might not be factoring apple care being included in apple upgrade program. I went into AT&T Next Up program and they wanted $17 a month for protection or you would need to pay for apple care( $200). With At&t protection it said it could be refurb and something unclear about parts. Thanks for the video, very detailed.
If you do the Boost Mobile financing with the Infinite Access for iPhone plan, the iPhone is locked to Boost Mobile. You are not technically required to use their plan for 3 years, but similar to the other promotions if you wanted to leave before the end of 3 years you would forfeit any remaining promotional credit and have to buy out the remainder of your phone. If you stick with the plan for 3 years, the phone becomes completely paid off and is yours to keep. You can get the phone unlocked as soon as its paid off. If you do the Apple iPhone Upgrade Program with Boost Mobile, then the iPhone in that case would come unlocked.
Visible only works for phones. If you’re interested in, also getting a tablet line, you may consider US Mobile. All of US Mobile’s plans also work in tablets. See their plans here: www.bestphoneplans.net/carriers/us-mobile

Your calculations are off… what if your only paying $50 a month for a phone plan but T-Mobile wants you to upgrade to a higher $100 plan to upgrade you have to factor the cost of the extra $50 a month for the new phone plan. The carriers are ripping you off… not only that but when they add the extra $50 and the monthly device cost they tax you on all of that on your bill so your being tax at a higher rate cause your bill is higher with the extra add one. You’re getting robbed!!!
Respectfully, I disagree. In my eyes, that’s the whole point! You need to pay for a specific plans in order to get the discount discounts. What do you want a plan that gives you a free iPhone every year, but cost $300 per month? How would that compare to a plan that gives you 50% off the new iPhone but only costs $65 per month? If you don’t look at the full cost of the plan, I feel like you missed the full picture!

Better yet is to avoid the closed iOS system at all costs.
The iPhone upgrade program includes AppleCare which makes up the difference in many cases.
then they wonder why they're struggling to get by in one of the richest country on the planet...
Best way is not to buy an overpriced hone that looks similar to predecessor
😅
Still waiting for the international coverage map!!
Me too! 😅

Carrier plans require you to purchase their way more expensive lines, i just trade in and then you can finance or pay the remaining sum
Could you review US mobile again? I’m interested in their QCI levels. If you teleport, what happens?
Great questions! I'll add that to my video queue.
@@StetsonDoggett Thanks for the quick response. I’m currently evaluating whether moving from Verizon to US Mobile is a good move. I have 5 lines.
I think it would be a good move. You'd likely lower your cell phone bill. And you get the flexibility to teleport between networks.
@@Jonathan-do4qbwith 5 lines idk if it’ll make much difference. US mobile cheapest unlimited is $25 all taxes and fees included, compare price per line. The service is great and I have no complaints, never found myself without data or any slow downs in the past year I’ve been with them
Best way is buying through apple and then selling your old one privately
imagine TMO ATT VZW execs watching this XD
Hopefully they find it helpful hahaha 😂
Also the next up anytime isn’t worth it because there will probably be another free phone deal to take advantage of at the other carriers when your phone is paid off, unless you really can’t wait 2 or 3 years to upgrade
Honestly if you want an iPhone, just get the 13 Pro 128GB. It has the 120hz screen, that is what most people will actually want, and it's che cheapest option that can give you that.
$500 on eBay for a "Like New" condition refurb. Basically the same as the 16 Pro anyways, but for half the price.
Man these plans are so expensive in the US. In Germany it´s a bit cheaper.
Im with Att
The real way it works is they take that total and divide by 36 months ,
So my 512gb iphone 15 pro max was $1399
So $1399/36 months is $38.86 per month
But the next up upgrade program had me pay $38.86 x 18 months for half of thr 36months of owning the phone then paid taxes based on the $1399 original full price which was like $117 for me
Which is why i just paid $233 when up just upgraded cuz thats whats needed to make it to 18months of payments since it’s actually only been 12months with September to September
So i only paid $816 for my iphone 15 pro max before upgrading to the 16 pro max
Thats it
Att makes money on me now cuz they can take my $1400 iphone pro max that i pad $816 for which leaves $583 left owed but they can sell it as a refurbished iPhone for like $1000 making still $483 profit
My iphone 15 pro max died so i bought the Samsung a35 5g for 200 just until i have enough money for the Iphone 16 pro max. But i cant believe how good this phone is for just 200😮😮 and to be honest i love the software.
How did it die? Was it a battery or software issue or did it get damaged?
@@kaycartier2245 damaged, i was driving on a scooter and it dropped
Did I listen correctly that boost buys out your old phone ?
Best thing is upgrade every 4 years I still rock with my 13 pro max and won’t upgrade til iPhone 17 ultra
Best way to get iPhone upgrades
1. Get the iPhone 8-24 months into its release lifetime on a loyalty or seasonal discount under a financing contract coupled with a cheap plan (24 months)
2. Pass iPhone onto family member after 24 months to mitigate depreciation
3. Repeat step 1 and 2
What an incredibly well researched video.
Sad I am not from the US - or this video would be my goto guide.
Subscribed, nevertheless.
Sounds good until you realize that these companies are making you a customer for another 2-3 years
Your content is great dude. Seamless👏🏽👏🏽
I appreciate that! Thank you!
I live in the mainland US and have had my number for years but with ATT selling their networks in Puerto Rico and the USVI my only choice is T Mobile if I want to keep my 787 number and use it on the mainland. Literally only got one choice
Sacrifice 1300$ 1400$ depending on storage make sure it’s a pro max then sell it on eBay offer up or market place public meetups faster usually get 850$ for 95% battery health each year since 12 n only pay 300$ I only do this cuz I am a heavy chip user games etc n also phone photography/videography so its worth it each year
What cell service does boost use? T-Mobile?
Boost uses the Boost Mobile 5G network, the AT&T network, and the T-Mobile network to provide coverage.
Prepaid and buy a decent mid range unlocked phone for 400 bucks is the way to go .. no one needs the latest greatest every year
I've had the 13 Pro Max for the past 3 years & I also had Next Up but I didn't end up using it & I just stuck to the 13 Pro Max. I'm going to trade it in now when it will be fully paid off in October to upgrade to the 16 Pro Max, but if I keep the Next Up Anytime, I'm going to make sure I use it in 1-2 years from now lol
Great information.

If you are 55+ T Mobile go next 55 $130 per month for two iphones and lines. I love this plan.
That is another excellent option!
I brought a iphone 16pm with paypal pay monthly directly from Apple
I just clicked on this video I know a way take out a portfolio line of credit which right now is a 6.75% interest rate and if you borrow $1300 at the interest only amount you’d need to only pay $7.31 per month while the $2600 portfolio continues to appreciate when the new phone comes out sell the old one buy more Vti and repeat
Pay for visible 35 a month and buy a new pro max with apple trade in for $550 so 970 a year for a new phone and service
What about 55+ or Military plans?
Are you sure the pro max is the most popular iPhone? I feel like I’ve read the base models outsell the pros by quite a bit but I am not that well informed in phones.
Yes, I am sure.
Don’t you need to pay $30 more if you buy unlocked from Apple?
I think you might not be factoring apple care being included in apple upgrade program. I went into AT&T Next Up program and they wanted $17 a month for protection or you would need to pay for apple care( $200). With At&t protection it said it could be refurb and something unclear about parts. Thanks for the video, very detailed.
You are welcome! I factor in AppleCare+ being included at 15:40.
@@StetsonDoggettthank you for pointing it out, I missed that part on it. Excellent video
How about using visible by Verizon or mint mobile?
Omg it was literally your next topic. A+ review, sir!
😄
How about buying higher end Android phones?
Thanks Stetty.
You're welcome!
If you choose boost mobile financing, does it require you to use their plan for 3 years? And moreover does the phone comes unlocked?
Is visible only for phones or can I put a tablet on it also. Thank you.
Visible only works for phones. If you’re interested in, also getting a tablet line, you may consider US Mobile. All of US Mobile’s plans also work in tablets. See their plans here: www.bestphoneplans.net/carriers/us-mobile
Does Boost iPhones come unlock?
All Boost Mobile phones come locked. If you buy the phone at full price from Boost Mobile, then the phone is eligible to be unlocked immediately. I did this, and the rep said it would take between 24 and 48 hours to unlock.
All Boost Mobile phones come locked to Boost Mobile. If you buy from Boost directly and pay full price up front, then you are eligible to get the phone unlocked immediately. You just need to contact support. I did this and I was told my phone would be unlocked within 24-48 hours. Video coming soon on my channel.
If you have to finance a phone you don’t need it.
How to get iphone on finance without Carrier plan contract
Your calculations are off… what if your only paying $50 a month for a phone plan but T-Mobile wants you to upgrade to a higher $100 plan to upgrade you have to factor the cost of the extra $50 a month for the new phone plan. The carriers are ripping you off… not only that but when they add the extra $50 and the monthly device cost they tax you on all of that on your bill so your being tax at a higher rate cause your bill is higher with the extra add one. You’re getting robbed!!!
Can you please make the same video for samsung phones
Why are you adding the expensive monthly cellphone plan to the total cost of the phone ownership? That’s really, really impractical and unrealistic.
Hey Stetson, unrelated, but is DarkStar deprioritized?
Yes, DarkStar is deprioritized by default. You can optionally pay for an add on to make it priority data.
😂It's not free more likely to stay to stay in debt
Do a video or mention discounts, Vets get 10% ish off from apple.
Took delivery of my 16 pro max today from apple thanks to you! 🙌🏾
