- This month on DIY prop culture builds we build the dragon Manuel from How to train your Dragon! this project will teach you a whole lot about book binding, as well as patience in your art, to anyone looking for a challenging build to test your skill, this is a good candidate.

Fun fact when dreamworks made httyd they did some research when making the book of dragons and you can actually translate the pages. I forget what language they used but it's actually easy to tell from the night fury page that it does use the rune how actual words would be written(using the same rune for the same letter every time since on that page we do in fact see a reuse of some rune letters.) So that's fun to know. If I made this I'd add a page in the front or back with a rune to modern alphabet letters key so I could read it and see if what hiccup read was actually in the book.
Yeah I heard that! Id love to see it truly translated, and that key idea is genius!!
They used actual Norse runes to create the Berkian Norse written language but with English words.
This inspirated me to do my own!i invested lot,especially in drawing and it turned out Good!
where did you find the drawings of the dragons I cant find them

Dang dude - this is probably the coolest HTTYD-related item I’ve ever seen!!! I have wanted to make my own Book of Dragons since 2010 myself XD I’ve got paper, but I did not think about baking it!! Also, I have plenty of leather, but I couldn’t get good enough photos of all of the original wording and if you’re gonna do it, do it right, I always say! I think I can draw the dragons (I certainly have the pencils - I love hardtmuth!!) Do you recommend tooling the leather for the cover, or burning it? I love this video! Thank you for showing us this masterful work of art!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

@@h011y_flaherty yes i did!😁. Sorry for the delayed response but I posted on deviant art with the pages a day or two ago, with the art from the book (as well as my other art) and you can find the page under the same name as my UA-cam channel. It means a lot that you love it so much 😁

I'd love to make one too, but even the research prep is pretty tedious. I'm not sure I'd have the patience to get to the end of it or not.

After seeing this video I realized where in the world did you get the reference images I'm trying to make my own not using a custom book but instead using a compound binder but then adding into the later species that were not in the first movie but instead we're in the two series I came after the one that was using dragons that they mentioned but then add because I have the app rise of berk but that doesn't help has all the information is all jumbled up I also have been googling but all that does is just lead to paradoxes that don't have any information I need so I really need to know where the frack you source of this
Tbh, besides for the scene in the movie I really didn’t use too much reference, i do plan to make a new dragon manual sometime next summer and go deeper into my process behind designing the pages. For the pages that weren’t in the movie i either used unofficial sources, (The Monstrous Nightmare comes to mind) or just made them up😂
@@TheJonMachineArt Someone on both fandom and Tumblr both posted the entire book and them for our pages like concept art and some pages that don't actually exist in the original series like two and the other has the text translated yes a lot of the gibberish but some of it is actually what he's reading

Thank you 😁😁😁 to find my references i took screen grabs from the movie, and also found some miscellaneous art online that I attempted to replicate. I made a sort of sequel video last June (i think) were i went through book page by page, and pictures of the pages are on my deviant art (www.deviantart.com/thejonmachine)

How long did this take?
It tool a while, the Makeing of the book was pretty quick, i did it in two nights I think, but drawing in the book took about a month with an average of two pages a day. I got into a kind of routine of drawing every day at the time, it was very good practice.
