THREATENED with a $$$ FINE mid Ocean | Sailing Florence Ep. 118

- Becalmed and drifting in the Mozambique channel, miles from land we did not expect to be threatened with a fine! Sailing offshore on ocean passages usually brings a few surprises but this was a first for Florence. We will share with you some of the magic of being becalmed at sea by day and by night.
We have been sailing around the world for over 5 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. Join us as we share the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, Sailing offshore across the Oceans and exploring remote locations with our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

"Over and out" lol
Excellent that you guys got there. Great vid with the new camera. Secrets out now. The french millitery will have to find somewhere else to hide😃😃
With the recent terrorist activities in the northern Mozambique, the French are protecting their Total oil exploration interest in the area, hence the military presence
Not sure if that was military. They signed off with “over and out”, which is more akin to Smokey and the Bandit on their CB radios. The end of conversation word is “out”; “over” is used when an response is expected. Were you talking to someone in authority I wonder 🤔
@@atholstrachan7122 can't say if they were in authority but it clearly was a French accent.
@@atholstrachan7122
From what I understand, those were marine-biologists who were backed up by the Gendarmerie, thus the French military.
You two are my new binge watch addiction. I started with the Old Seadog, then the Wynns - but I switched to you as I find your low key approach (spend more time, avoid the crowds) more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
best becalmed footage. excellent drone and sunset shots. thank you
Your videos sailing videos are so effective because of the care you take to capture the different states of the water, both visual and audio. I suspected that you were using.a camera with better lenses or whatever and, as I am writing this comment, you pulled up the new camera, and it is already paying off.
I love watching you two, the way you work and communicate with each other is sweet, along with your expertise in sailing and zest to move on.
yes I noticed the quality of the image, better, much better
Those French guys on the radio might just as well have said "I fart in your general direction !!"
Great video as always. Thanks from Nanaimo, BC.
Well, I guess that's the French for you. The Navionics Chart says "Entry into the marine reserve is affected by numerous restrictions and prohibitions"
I suppose that means they make it up as they go along. 😉
I love watching your sailing adventures. No clickbait, just two good sailors doing what sailors do. 👍
Thank you for your efforts in capturing the bioluminescence on camera! I'd only heard and read about it until now. Very nice.
We also see it when flushing the toilet at night. Seriously we do.
It's worthwhile noting that the Îles Glorieuses have no local inhabitants, no port and only a French military presence. While most parts of these islands have been classified as nature reserves, they remain under French control, with access strictly restricted to the army and scientists. France has a military landing strip there and the islands are part of French operations against pirates.
Hello Matt and Amy. I love the both of you. You are my favorite sailing watching videos. This was my longest wait between episodes - it felt like it in any way. I was every worried about your safety and now very glad that you got away there in good time. Waiting on episode 118 - I started to watched your journey for episode 1 again. I watched 51 episodes in four days. Enjoy every moment. I follow many cruising boats - cruising couples and also families. I love every moment of it. I fell in love with the two of you after watching the first few videos some two and half years ago. You are about the same age as my two sons and my family knows that I called you my adopted children. I am from Cape Town South Africa and cant wait to watch Florence entering Cape Town. I will be there waiting on you. Nothing will stop me from doing that. I don t know how I will be able to find out. I don t want to miss that moment. Enjoy the next leg of your journey to Cape Town. I pray that the ocean and weather will provide you a safe and happy journey. Goodbye from your Cape Town Dad!!!
Since Sailing Bora Bora retired, you two are now our number one circumnavigating couple!
Here's something I've never seen a channel cover before - Boarding ladders and/or platforms. Dinghies - done, but the other thing for people without a sugar scoop or cat, never seen it and it's used EVERY time we get on or off the boat when cruising.
We don't use one, Matt just climbs up the push pit after a swim, Amy gets into the dinghy from the water and then steps onto Florence. One advantage of a small boat with low freeboard ;-)
Love watching your videos. Looking forward to you arriving in South Africa 🇿🇦
They're already here it seems, last AIS position is just after leaving EL on the 20th
"If sailing across oceans was like this all the time, everybody would be out here doing it..." Oh, Matt, I hear you!!! would that it were, would that it were...
Wet, grey and windy in West Wales today. Cheered ourselves up by watching a number of your videos for the first time. Thoroughly enjoyed watching you around the Seychelles and your onward journey to South Africa. Very inspirational - and rather envious too!!
Great to discover your channel
The video excelent qulity... Good job guys you are both amazinig!!!
Welcome to Hout Bay Capetown.
Definitely noticed the increased quality of the camera - the sunsets look much fuller and more saturated. Keep up the great work! You two are living the dream!! Cheers, Greg
Good to have nice weather for the finish of this passage. You would have to be a very patient person to do this trip. I've sailed the coast of Alaska for over 25 years and I've seen both Bioluminescence AND the Aurora Borealis at the same time on night watch. It was pretty surreal when it happened. I figured it couldn't get any better than this and then a pod of Orca's came by... : ) Thanks for the video. The video quality is very good. Sail On!
That bioluminescence was beautiful 😍
Best sailing crew on UA-cam,
Such interesting & professional video as always, you guys are top quality
Thanks guys! Can't wait to see the next video. It looks incredible.
We love your videos! Thanks for sharing your journey!
Another great video, thanks guys!
I enjoy sailing with you from my armchair.
In 2001 I sailed aboard a catamaran down the Mozambique channel and we anchored off Juan de Nova island to shelter from a storm. The garrison there, a detachment of the of the French 2nd regiment of airborne marines based in Reunion, (aka "La Coloniale") was most hospitable and invited me to lunch and a tour of the island.
You are usually allowed to stay 48 hours if you claim an emergency or need to do urgent repairs. If you are challenged within territorial waters you can claim innocent passage (passage inoffensif in French).
There are anchorages to the north of Juan de Nova, but note that the spring tides are up to five metres there.
If you are going down that way I recommend Chesterfield island, approx 16°21' S 43°56' E, which is little more than a sandbank full of birds with great snorkelling. The Barren Islands, off the coast of Maintirano, Madagascar, are also worth a visit.
Congratulations on picking such a great weather window. Looking forward to seeing your Mayotte adventures in coming episodes.
Lovely episode, thanks!
I'm glad you showed where Mayotte is on the map, because I'd never heard of it :) HNY to you both
Wonderful video yet again. Love your attitude to challenges. Thank you and safe sailing.
Another Fantastic share !!
I just love your videos. So authentic and great storytelling.
Fair winds and following seas, Florence.
certainly better quality can not wait for the next one this one was awsome as well
It looks amazing there have a fantastic time.
I only just discovered your channel, really nicely done video's! I will be busy watching them all.
My chart shows a rather large pie wedge to the east of the island as being a military area. In terms of military communications I didn't think the guy was too bad, he wasn't rude, he didn't shout he was just very firm.
it's a meteorological station
With all respect that island is very far from France. Plus colonial occupation has been over for a while
@@markhale8703 >Plus colonial occupation has been over for a while
you would think it's over, but in reality, colonialism is still alive and kicking. Let's see: Israel occupied Palestine, Kashmir, Hawai, Tahiti, West-Papua-New Guinea, West-Sahara, …
@@omarkn4371 israel occupied Palestine......its complicated Kashmir.....its complicated Hawai, Tahiti, West-Papua-New Guinea, West-Sahara no fuking idea what is going on there ,,,,,,but on the rest I made a lot of investigatons
I agree he wasn't rude but his complete lack of radio protocol for a military person was odd. No one should ever say "Over and Out". It's "Over" or "Out"; never together.
Picture looks great and sharp ,best of luck, thanks for sharing!!!!😊
Thanks. Superb!
Yep could definitely see picture improvement, really enjoying this passage to SA. Stay safe and keep on keeping on! Cheers
Great to see your smiles again. Happy New Year to you both!
Another cracking video Matt and Amy enjoyed it very much the colour is fantastic safe travels
Great job, mastering light air is an art form.

Very sharp pictures, very detailed and good color....... cheers from Sechelt, BC, Canada
I've been following you and a few others and realized that it's been long enough that I really should have my own boat by now...
Thanks for taking a 'stowaway' with you, to places that I'll probably never get to, but I feel like I have ⛵🌎
Got that boat yet?
Finally, yes. But not a final boat, but it will do for around the UK and the Med...a Westerly Berwick 31' Bilge Keeler...
@@marclawyer2789 oh amazing! I've been quite drawn to westerlys.
@@deleted.23
Yes, they're a solid build, with a strong owners club and easy spares etc...the one we bought had been extensively updated in recent years (mast, rigging, winches and nav gear, batteries, folding prop, new engine, electrics and all 'windows' reseated) so made sense as hard work had been done. We also looked at Moody's 33 mk2 and 346 (bit pricey) and the westerly discuss. We're in Cardiff so a bilge Keeler is essential.
Good luck with your search 🤞
Outstanding
Great clip
Wish you a Happy New Year
Cheers
Nice episode guys. Good heads up on that "military" island - I'm switching to electric propulsion this year so I won't be able to motor away like you did. Yes, definite improvement in the picture quality with that new kit, , maybe I'll look at getting one as well.
Well done. That is a really good capture of the bio-luminescence. so interesting to see.
Great work, I like also narration and audio quality!
Lovely video. Very different with so much calm weather. Very interesting communication with the French authority. They definitely didn’t want you in the area! Very good for us onlookers to see and hear that…as it is something for us to think about/be aware of…should we follow in your wake.
Very very good watching. Feel really privileged. ❤️
Fantastic ! Did a passage from Palma Mozambique to Dubai via the Seychelles for fuel and food provisions back in May and it was one of the best I have ever done the night skys are so clear just as you mentioned, but best was the dolphins swimming around the boat in the bioluminessence
Great video guys!
10:00 appreciating a camera can't always catch the "real" beauty of nature's visions it was still very cool to see. Thanks for sharing it was still beautiful, in reality it must have been incredible .... 😃 😊
Beautiful video/pictures. I’ve followed every episode (more than once). I really need to get a boat! But why, I’ve got you two to take me to happy places!!
Can't believe I just found you guys. I have some videos to watch . Great video.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
The color from the new camera is noticeably better. Great work editing too!
first time Ive seen your Chanell , Really Nice presentation , Glad you had such a enjoyable passage thanks for shareing , That was Unreal
Well Done
Another great video and I can definitely see the quality difference. Got to love the French authorities, I bet if you were trawling a line at the time you were in their waters they would have been out straight away to see what fish you had caught! Looking forward to the next video. Happy New Year to you both and safe and happy sailing.
Awesome video. Becalmed and drifting?, dont give me that, you guys are wonderful sailors, you basically made it to Atrica. Congrats!, have a Happy New Year. Blessings
Good video so relaxing..
Excellent video
Sunset swim is also shark feeding time.
Love watching your adventure together so much! Cheers from the snowy Sierra Nevada recent snow storm broke 1970 records take a look at Truckee California!
Yes Your videos looks Great! Big Difference...
Fabulous. I have loved all the Indian ocean sailing. Its just so interesting the way you put the footage together. More bio luminescence please.. :)). Yes, the quality is noticeable...
Your gaining on that 100K subscriptions! Keep up the good content!
Excellent
I can see Matt’s whiskers on my large TV. Camera images are looking great! 🤙
