- (Part 1) At the end of the LotR-trilogy, when standing at the Grey Havens, Frodo reveals that he will be going with the last ship to leave Middle-Earth, to the shock and grief of his friends. (HD Blu-ray)
This scene is so emotional, sad and heartbreaking, but still so beautiful and a perfect ending.

I loved that moment when bilbos face seemed to come alive. Its like he became 10 years younger in an instant. You could also see it on the elves face, them basically thinking about just how incredible a race these hobbits truly are. He bore the ring for the better part of a century, gave it up willingly, and even now can smile and step forward with joy in his heart. Bilbo really is built different.

According to Ian Mckellen, this was one of the first scènes they shot together. So he was saying goodbye to people he barely knew. Ironic.
And in the scene where Frodo and Sam are talking to each other on the steps up to Cirith Ungol, the scenes where the camera shows Frodo and the scenes where the camera shows Sam were filmed months apart.
Wait for real?
Really? I would've imagined they didn't film anything from the last movie before a lot of the first movie
@@mialia15104 at the place they were shooting the films in new zealand, there was a flood and massive storm which stopped them from shooting certain parts of the fellowship. so instead of filming that, they did some shots which they could do, which were some parts of the stairs of cirith ungol.
One of the first scenes they filmed was for the third film?
I always loved this scene, seeing how Bilbo go from being a frail old man to a old man with a lust for adventure.
As we say in old body young spirit 😊
The line delivery at 0:51 by Hugo Weaving is so perfect. His voice is like a salve. Millennia of strife and heartbreak now fading away. You can feel the yearning, the love, the peace the elves now sail to in Valinor.
That feeling of Noldorin elves, after years of struggles to fend evil of Morgoth and his minions, almost forbidden to go west due to sins of their forefathers, to finally sees the evil vanquished, and let them to finally came again to Aman
You can see the effect his words have on Bilbo instantly. Like a spell that momentarily casts aside his old age and the weariness of his life and beckons him on more adventure. Just as the sound of the gulls call home the first children of illuvatar.

Galadriel rebelled against the Valar and came to Middle-Earth some 7000 years ago, to seek new life and establish a realm of her own. In that time she has watched all her brothers and cousins die, empires rise and fall, the defeat of both Morgoth and Sauron, Silmarils passed on to the Earth, Sky and Water and, finally, the One Ring destroyed in Fire.
Now her longing is ended and a ship is ready for her, as she is ready for it. Brings tears to my eyes.
She didn't really rebel. She just followed her kin.
nothing could hurt me more than knowing Gandalf was leaving Middle-earth forever. I was in tears as a child and felt like I lost a family member.
Gandalf was like the best life coach in the whole Middle Earth. He always finds goodness in the heart of man, hobbit and dwarves.
Along with Higher beings especially the remaining Elves and Ringbearers. The time of the Elves and the Dominion of the Great Rings are finally over. Now the Domnion of Men has finally begins.
This scene wrecks me every time :,(
I can't imagine the sheer pride Manwë must have in Gandalf for going beyond his assigned task.
I love how you can see an old grey elf, Cirdan the Shipwright, just chilling in the backround of this scene. These movies' attention to detail is astounding!
Though they missed the detail of sticking to WHERE he is supposed to stand. In one shot he's right behind them, in the other several paces to their rear and right.
But that sort of thing happens.
I'm more impressed that it seems they actually gave him a beard as he's supposed to have, although it's hard to see.

You can see Gandalf sad too but covering it
One of my favorite things to consider is that, while Gandalf was never crazy about Pippin, the last onscreen conversation he has with Pippin is so satisfying and heartwarming.
Love the immense respect the elves have for Bilbo. Besides Gollum and the Sackville Bagginses, he won the heart of every soul he encountered on his travels.
The care the Hobbits show to Bilbo as they escort him to the vessel is sweet
He's a legend amongst them.
I love how Frodo and Sam are supporting him on either side - they both are like the sons Bilbo never had.
"Farewell my brave hobbits".. as grumpy Gandalf sometimes was and even mad, about especially Pippin, in the end he knows, they gave everything to save their friends and their belove SHire. This movie is so well told and written... to this day, my most emotional movie moment.
Exactly and especially you can see he is sad too . But covering it .
Love how Bilbo's spirit kicks in again and is filled with life, at the prospect of moving on and seeing new lands.
I'm basically sobbing for the whole last 30 mins of ROTK. First when Frodo and Sam are on that rock "at the end of all things" . Then when Frodo wakes up and everyone is around the bed laughing, and he and Sam smile at each other. Then when all the humans, elves etc bow to the hobbits at Aragorn's coronation. And again, at the Grey Havens. It's just non stop tears.
When Bilbo says “Quite ready” his eyes literally light up
Right after Bilbo remarks that he’s ready for another nature, he suddenly has the spry energy of a much younger man. That’s him in a nutshell 💜
I cried so much when I saw this for the first time. A perfect beautiful ending for all involved. But so sad to have this wonderful story come to an end. I hope Frodo found peace in the undying lands. He deserves it.
he deserves everything good.
Elijah Wood's eyes and tears carry the story in so many places, it gets me always that at this time, he knows he has to leave and there are no tears, just sadness in his eyes
I think that seeing Bilbo showing some of his old spirit gladdened Frodo's heart and made it possible to give his friends that last smile.
Ah this still is one of my favorite endings of all time.
What really makes this scene, for me, isn't the emotional farewells or the tears, it's all in Cate Blanchett's little smile to the Fellowship as she departs; you can see the weight of this sober, portentous character being lifted as she gives this almost girlish smile to her brief friends before leaving this world of hardship and strife forever. There's something sad about the Elves' departure, but here this most sober and weighty woman only feels lightness and happiness as she looks forward.
I remember the first time I watched this in the cinema. I was crying proper tears especially when Gandalph says "Here at last... comes the end of our fellowship." And then when they were gobsmacked that Frodo was going too I lost it. I remember an usherette bringing me tissues. My grandmother who I was very very close to had just died earlier that month so I was a mess. I still cry every time I watch this scene. Still cant believe its all over. 😢
01:28 The Galadriel smile melts my heart. She finally knows that she deserves back to be Valinor, and I got the worth of her so much after I saw Galadriel in the Rings of Power. I am wondering whetever they are going to be able to adapt her to this real queen. They need to work so hard to make an accurate character development.
And you saw how Frodo looks unsettled by her smile due to his initial encounter with her dark persona
Gandalf s farewell is the saddest you can see he s sad too . And Elrond and Galadriel too ofcourse but i smile at them 😊
Galadriel was fixated on Frodo, interestingly enough.
Omg, Bilbo. The one who started it all and kept the ring without becoming a serial killer for most of his extended life, hidden from the forces of darkness. That moment when he turned evil for half a second when Frodo was near with the ring broke my heart, because you knew that darkness he had been carrying all those years was still in him. Then he gets to go and hang with elven ladies for eternity, who are all presumably supermodels and never wear clothes because it's the undying lands. Ah, that is how you write an ending.
You were this close to writing a good eulogy of Bilbo’s life, but then you ruined it with supermodel elves :(
Kinda creepy on that last part bro
@@cuperoussulfide396 seriously 🤢 what is wrong with his mind.
I couldn't find a comment saying how Galadriel's smile was sublime. It was so astonishing... 😳

At 2:00, you can see Narya, the ring of fire on Gandalf's hand. One of 3 of the greatest rings of power, it was given to him by Cirdan the Shipwright because he recognized Gandalf's wisdom when he arrived in Middle Earth. Besides preservation, which I don't thing Gandalf used much, it had the power to kindle hope in the hearts of the free people to fight against evil.
0:53
Its taken me a long time to appreciate how gently Elrond speaks here. After more than 6,000 years of hardship, whether at the loss of his people or having to let his wife to go Valinor without him.
Almost every bit of his life in middle earth has been full of trial and heartbreak, and here on the shores of the sea he can feel the burden finally being lifted from his shoulders for the first time in his life.
So thoughtful how they bring in the instrumental chorus of the Oscar winning track 'Into the West" by Annie Lennox.near the end. Such utter perfection.........and such a beautiful film. For me, I will be surprised if any film ever tops this in my lifetime.
At 1:55 you can see that Gandalf is wearing Narya ("The Ring of Fire"), one of the three Elven Rings. Círdan was its original keeper, but he gave it to Gandalf because he thought he could do more with it. We weren't able to see it throughout the trilogy because he was using magic to conceal it, but in this scene we're seeing through Frodo's eyes, and because Frodo has worn the One Ring and seen the Eye of Sauron, it cannot be concealed from him.
Galadriel says the power of the three rings has ended. Why is Gandalf still wearing one of them?
@@ahmetakgun5358 It's an interesting question, but I'm pretty sure it's canon that he took Narya back to Aman, because the book also mentions that Frodo noticed him wearing it during their journey. In fact, Elrond and Galadriel probably took Vilya and Nenya with them too, as they were the bearers of those rings... If I had to guess, Gandalf probably gave Narya back to the elves once they arrived in Aman, as he would have had no further use for it. And the elves probably kept all three as keepsakes of their history in Middle Earth.
I think it was Gandalf, who was truly blessed, as he had the chance to meet two humble, yet brave heroes like Bilbo and Frodo.

“Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.” ~ J.R.R. Tolkien "Return of the King"
I like Galadriel's smile. There's a glimpse of mischief in there. I all her seriousness and dignity, there is a sense of humour.
She just appreciates that her ex-lover Saurbrand is DEAD
You saw how Frodo looks unsettled by her smile
So long as the ruling ring existed the 3 Elvish rings had power. They were also invisible to the eyes of anyone who did not hold a ring of power. The reason Frodo could see Galadriel's ring Nenya in the Fellowship of the Ring was because he held the ruling ring. In this scene there are 2 Easter eggs for book readers. Upon the destruction of the One Ring, the 3 lesser Elven rings became powerless and visible to the eyes of others. Elrond was the keeper of Vilya - the ring of air. You can see Vilya on the middle finger of his right hand starting at 0:39. Galadriel sadly does not reveal her hands so that Nenya can be seen. But the 3rd and final ring - Narya the Ring of Fire - was given to Gandalf by Cirdan on the day he arrived in Middle Earth, and he wielded and cared for it everyday afterwards. Narya is visible on his finger starting at 2:00.
I had the same thought too. But the mysterious 4th elven person is seen boarding the boat and Cirdan stayed behind to tend the Havens as the final elven would-be voyagers eventually made their way to the ships. Of course mayhaps he wasn't actually leaving in this scene...more of a "let me check the rigging here..yup alls well..I'm getting off the boat now" circumstance. Out of curiosity I pulled a .pdf of the screenplay to see how this scene was written. Because sometimes screenplays will shed light on the non-verbal and/or subtle elements of scenes. It merely says "Tracking: passing under a beautiful elven archway to reveal a white ship, ready to depart from a white stone dock. Angle On: Elrond, Celeborn, and Galadriel are waiting for them". No mention of the mysterious 4th elf. However, I like to think that it's Cirdan anyway.
@Babes & Board Games Well...that's a pretty interesting and astute question I'd not considered before. So I pulled the cast lists for FotR and also for RotK. Nobody is credited as playing Cirdan in either cast. However - I did note that if one were to pause the opening prologue in FotR when the elves are first examining their rings, one may note the white haired elf over Galadriel's right shoulder as looking very much alike to our mystery elf in this video. Pause the prologue when Galadriel lifts her hand up and Cirdan is visible between her hand and her hair. Compare that to the mystery elf in this video paused at 1:18. Looks like the same person to me.

As time goes by and I got older, now I can fully appreciate what happened 'after the end'
Even after the world is saved, and the great evil is gone, each of their life still goes on, toward divine land afterlife.
This has also a meaning in our life. Even after any great event passing by, our lives still continue, until 'the true end of life'

So i always wonder, the elf's are leaving and all that.... who's moving into the grey havens and all there cities? if i was one of those guys i'd move in lol...
Well, according to the Medieval 2 Total War mod called Fourth Age, some elves are still living in their settlements, although they are even more secluded and isolated than before.
Lothlorien and Rivendell are both eventually totally abandoned. The Havens of Lindon stay inhabited for many years after the end of LOTR as they remain one of the primary locations for the Elves to go into the west, in the books Cirdan is confirmed to stay in Mithlond until the last ship passes into the west. It's not defined when exactly that happens. The harbors and towns of Lindon appears to be left abandoned after the Elves leave, the only people to dwell in the region in any real numbers being the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains.
As for other settlements of the Elves, some stay inhabited far into the Fourth Age as some of the Elves (Primarily the "Dark Elves"/Avari) refuse to heed the call to go west as they are too tied to Middle-Earth to give it up. However the Elves who don't go west eventually fade alongside their lands and settlements, so by the time the Elves are gone their settlements are too.
@@NATIK001 do the elves who fade (because they remain in middle earth) go the the halls of Mandos? What happens to their spirits?

After reading the Silmarillion, the expressions shown by Bilbo in this scene are so much more impactful. To learn that while he stayed in Rivendell, he studied the lore and history of the world tirelessly in order to write The Silmarillion elevates his emotion so much in this scene. The look of sheer excitement as he says “I think I’m *quite* ready for another adventure” shows that he has DREAMT of seeing the land of Valinor ever since he discovered its rich history.
I suspect he spent many nights discussing with the likes of Manwë about everything that occurred before the 3rd age

Watching Bilbo walk up to Elrond is weird.
The life comes back to his face, yes, but it's a weird reminder of how short he is.

"There's a sight I have never seen before." A ship. Just a regular looking ship.
The great sea, Belegaer. He's never been to Mithlond or gazed into the far west before.
The time of the Dominion of Men. And we really fucked it up didn’t we!
Middle earth had centuries of peace after this. So not that fucked up.
Gandalf's comment about weeping is actually a subtle reference to his time in Valinor under the tutelage of Nienna, the Valar of grief, pity, and mercy. The grief she represents is a grief that allows those who endure it to grow in wisdom. That's where Gandalf learned it from, and he imparted those lessons on those he inspired.
This scene it's so epic.
Nowe, Galadriel, Elrond getting in with Bilbo...
at 1:27 the CGI guys made her pupils dilate. I'm both terrified and laughing at that as....well...her mood swings n all. But she seems genuinely giddy or childlike here. Frodo's expression at it is amazing. Like "Uh huh crazy lady... you can have him".
Was it in one of his letters that Tolkien tells us of Sam also sailing off to the Undying Lands after serving for seven terms as Mayor of the Shire, other than Gimli and Legolas? I read this online, but this is not mentioned in the novels.
Yes. Sam held the One Ring for only a short time but he was still a Ring Bearer and as such, was offered the opportunity to sail into the West.
His was the last ship to leave Middle Earth
The full history of what happened to the remaining of the fellowship is in the appendices. I have the complete trilogy edition and it's all there in the back all the way until Aragorn passes and legolas builds a boat and sails to the undying lands with gimli *wipes a tear*

Bilbo is invigorated by the idea of journeying far beyond the lands of Men and Hobbits despite his age. Just because Aman will be a place of peace instead of conflict does not mean that it will be dull. It still has wonders to see that cannot be found in any of the lands of Middle Earth.

One thing I love about this series is the prop creators attention to detail, for those who've read the novels they'll notice that Elrond and Gandalf are wearing visible rings in this scene where they weren't there before. Its because in the novels the 3 elvish rings of power belonging to Elrond, Galadriel, and Gandalf are finally leaving Middle-earth. They don't mention it in the movie, but subtly show it.
This scene is so heavy on us ...the emotional quotient is very high.....
