I am blown away at the absolute quality of learning I'm receiving from this UA-cam channel. If I wasn't a full time student I would support. When I finish school I will return to join that Patreon.
Thanks for doing this one, Tony! I've been fascinated with this song and am going to spend some time with it. To me, it's extremely tender and I really like the way Bill played it in some of his simple early versions. While I've heard some just go nuts on it, playing it really fast, super embellished, and even moving it to 4/4 time later on, that really takes away that "tender" feeling of it for me. If I can't imagine waltzing with my lover to the tune, getting lost within it, something is missing. (Just the way it feels to me.)
thank you so much. you have helped me make more progress than even Kent whom I love also. This is my favorite tune of all time. I play it but no where properly so you have helped my metaunderstanding. Acutally, as I am sure you know that little run is very much like Barry Harris'' thing...but apparently he doesn't want to hear BE's name out loud LOL. I like both them AND you thanks again
Thank you. Thoroughly enjoyed your playing and commentary on this most wonderful composition. Seeing your hands, which is so rare on videos or unless you are in exactly the right few seats at a live performance made it extra special.
Hope I don't get too over-blown, here, but I feel I'm meditating on a high plane of a music mountain seeing this exploration of a song I love. As you parse out different elements, it elevates the whole, and it's such a wonderful place to be. Thanks, man.
When the mind sees, it is a very high mountain. The View there, is magnificent! It is awe inspiring and is the wind that lifts us to such magnificent zeniths in our perceptions. It's nice to be there! It has been described as Green Pastures and Still Waters and in their deepest Essence they are the same.
Thankyou so much!! I also heard Db with Eb and then Eb with Db^^. Could it be that you like the Gbmaj7 with the 5 in the bottom because he plays first Dbmaj7 and then goes to the Gbmaj7? But i am not sure. I didn´t listen as many times as you i guess :)
It has been amazing know about you from my son . Nice to meet you , Sir . You are a Master. And its extremly peaceful see you explaining these wonderful things. Subscribed.
Mmm... looks beyond my pay grade too, Maestro... moreover I still have a lot I want to complete (such as mastering the ruthless chords 😊) before getting into something like this. Anyway a really great piece of music: you play (and teach) exactly what I want to play, Maestro. That's fantastic: thanks a lot. Hearing that you could one day erase all of your stuff (you say so in a previous video...) makes me anxious, Maestro: I need time...
Hi Doc .Tony Thank you very much for the lead sheet . I think I would rather follow you for a while before I take it !! Thanks again Doc. Tony !! Have a Great Christmas and a wonderful New Year !! Teddy !!
Hi! The score which is on Real Book, has 20 bars on the part 3, the last part of the tune, but listening the recording it seems that there are 22 bars instead of 20! I don't know if you could help me! Thanks
It's such a beautiful composition that I'd like to hear a classical pianist play it straight without swing, syncopation, or improvisation. Just the melody and chords.
Wonderful. Thanks so much Tony!! Truly one of my favorite jazz standards. Quick question though: any advice on which scales to use when improvising over the changes? This piece has so many chords....
I cannot for the life of me find something on Evans version of How Deep is the Ocean or Dream Gypsy with Jim Hall? Would you ever consider doing a video on these versions if you know them? Thank so much for your post
There’s an interview somewhere where he talks about how after he chose to go the jazz route, he actually took a year off at some point to go back and intensely study Bach chorales for a about a year. Explains why his counterpoint chops were off the charts. Such an incredibly well rounded player. When he was a teenager he apparently played Boogie Woogie blues piano, if you can believe that.
In her own sweet world Populated by dolls and clowns And a prince and a big purple bear Lives my favorite girl. Unaware of the worried frowns That we weary grown-ups all wear. In the sun she dances To silent music-songs That are spun of gold Somewhere in her own little head Then one day all too soon She'll grow up & she'll leave her doll And her prince & her silly old bear. When she goes they will cry As they whisper good-bye They will miss her I know But then so will I.
i like the fact that you use ears insyead of going blindly to tje score ...also your soloimg deserves also to be heard with backing then it start to be a solo that aint lonely no longer...and we are able to heat you in simulated band situation.I do admite and.like how you treat walking bass.on an elec bass...with maybe a drum track of the perticulair standard you without piano and bass or just a no piano track as you are used to play on I suppose of course I do also very much the purity that comes to the pure pian aspect...Maybe you are sometimes a little bit modest....
That five chord turnaround ending is the most heavenly harmony I think I've ever heard.
Guitarist here. I don't play piano but it is wonderful to hear your breakdown of this masterpiece. Great job!
Finally someone plays Bill Evans with an open heart and with so much dedication to the original! Kudos!@
The improv at the end was beautiful
The most beautiful song. Will never tire of hearing it. Thanks for the analysis.
Glad you enjoyed it
Sounds great! Thanks for the lesson! Bopalot!
My music teacher gave me this piece couple of years after his passing. Never new this great music prior!

i love the tune, the first time I 've heard it was with John McLaughlin "Time Remembered", so beautifull
Great lesson, Tony.
Very informative and relaxed, as usual.
Loved it and you sounded great.

Stuck in a place, I’d no rather be at the Village Vanguard in the year 1961 watching Bill and the boys jam one out.

Wow, amazing video Tony!
I heard a couple versions with lyrics years ago and I'm still working on unhearing them.

I'll check them out
I Hear a Rhapsody is my favorite one with Bill and Jim.
Bill Evans was a classical player before he went into jazz Bill Evans is a genius amazing waltz

I've heard he was great at boogie worried too
What book is the lead sheet from? looks like it's from the 60s.
When he played for Marian Mc Partland it was as originally intended.
What real book is this from? I'm dying to know!!
The new real book 1
Any chance of you singing this one?
I am back again tony
