      @@OriginalSithMonkey 99.9% THIS. With all the talk of the Switch 2 and then having backwards compatibility, Nintendo is doubling down. Mig Switch Video was what put Russ on the radar. And then the 2nd strike, Nintendo is a hawk already on Russ' channel. In the community post, Russ posted after releasing the CEMU vid (11 days ago post), that he, and I quote " If you are concerned about my use of Nintendo IP in the video, this was a deliberate decision. DELIBERATE...really Russ? I honestly thought he was smarter than that. He later edited the post removing that portion (shows edited on the post and only looks worse tbh because it shows intent). Joey if you see this comment, you are good. Unless someone directly contacts Nintendo targeting you, don't worry about it.

    I’m a die hard 4:3 fan. I just never understood why these handhelds come with 16:9 screens so much when 90% of what you’re going to play on this has an aspect ratio of 4:3 so I’m super excited for this one. I’ve literally been rocking my 405M for the longest time waiting for something like this. I kind of want to see Ambernic come out with the horizontal version of the 406 first though.

      I love anbernic's new strategy which seems to be to make systems that feel like certain controllers. I think RG ARC is the best case. That thing really feels nice for playing genesis and sega cd. But it needs more power for saturn. But I wish Anbernic came as easy to use as Retroid. Retroid is just so easy to set up out of the box, no need to mess with installing front ends, or using a website to swipe box pics. It all comes ready IN SYSTEM for retroid.

    The sole aspect of this review that Joey got wrong is that I only have ONE Anbernic handheld staring at me. One! It's a beautiful one too. It's the RG35XX-SP in that transparent blue. Zu and GoGameGeek partnered to do a giveaway back in July and the winner would be announced when the contest video hit certain metrics. I assume that it did because Zu reached out to me last week and said that I won. It arrived a couple of days later and it's been wonderful to play.
    It's pretty obvious that Joey, and probably a fair number of other people in this community, have become jaded because they've played with every H700 Anbernic under the sun; but, this is my first Anbernic and I've really been enjoying it. It's got a slick OS, it plays a lot of the stuff I care about, and it's super comfortable - comfortable to use and comfortable to front pocket with my phone. Also, the HDMI port is an inspired addition that adds a lot of flexibility. Every handheld and phone should have some form of wired video out.
    I'm pretty enthused about the Retroid Pocket Mini thanks in large part to receiving that SP from Zu. Getting the Anbernic SP made me realize that the perfect handheld for me isn't a big chunky boy with a lunch tray sized screen. Rather; the perfect handheld is a reasonably compact unit with a 3.5-4.0 inch screen, solid power, decent battery life, and "video out" capabilities.
    Why lug around a monster sized device sporting a monster sized screen all of the time? Or why go through the trouble of buying multiple sizes of handhelds and then have to go through the trouble of syncing saves, learning the ins-and-outs of multiple OSes, and whatnot? Why do this when you can just buy one right sized device that's big enough to see and hold comfortably, small enough to be pocket portable, and that can be expanded greatly in scope simply by plugging it into a TV or monitor that one already has?
    The Mini, not the 5, is peak Retroid.
    A Pocket Mini SP would be even better.
    Do it, Retroid.
    Do it!

    The OLED display turns off the black pixels automatically, because it's part of the organic pixels technology. So I just bought the black Retroid Pocket 5, and it will be perfect to play 4:3 games, because the device is all black, and the borders will get turned off, it's much better to play on a lager screen like this than with the Retroid Pocket Mini.
    Though, the RPMini is perfect for portability. It's the size of a PSP, but running Nintendo Switch games.

      @toasty4000000 12 днів тому +1

      It's not though. A 5.5" 16:9 screen is 2.7" tall (with 3.6" width of 4:3 content at that height) - exactly equally to a 4.5" screen at 4:3 ratio. Would have a .6" letterbox on either side (full screen is 4.8" wide)
      A 3.7" 4:3 screen is 2.2" tall (and 3" wide).
      That's almost 25% more height and 33% more 4:3 screen area (6.6sqin vs 9.72sqin) on the RP5. Plus a lot of those newer consoles can be ran with widescreen hacks if they didn't support it natively, plus consoles like 3DS benefit from extra screen space.

    Nice review, mate. Don't usually comment but I ordered one through your link to help out a bit. Just like with my silly faith in the Miyoo Flip over the Anbernic SP, I was holding out on Anbernic's inevitable answer to this with the RG406P for the bigger screen (I'm not fussed about OLED). However, the likelihood of it having 'just another' T820 chip and a less-likely revision of their obnoxiously loud buttons from recent devices pushed me to just buy this as the definitive 4:3 device. Yes, it would have been perfect at 4-4.5" but it's the closest we're going to get for a little while I believe. I also don't think Anbernic has the same build quality it once had since the 353 line and below. Whereas Retroid did great with the RP4/Pro and has fine tuned controls now. Anbernic, sadly, seem to constantly make devices with at least one glaring concession.
    On a separate note, I'd like to see Retroid try a Mini Flip! The sticks recessed into a pocketable SP frame (slimmer than the 35XX SP) with their signature d-pad would be incredible.

  • @tomlion0116

    The H700 devices have their place. In my country, $200 plus shipping is just way too much for a device like this. I have a Switch wich used is a great value, and as a secondary handheld the cheap RG35XX-H is a perfect combo for my needs. On my Switch, I play first-party and older third-party games like Red Dead and Bioshock, and the H is my PS1 machine. I don't need a device for GameCube or PS2 because on the road, I don’t have the time to play big games. But if I use the train for longer distances, I usually bring my Switch with me.

Plus QD-Mini LED colors are just about as vibrant if not IMHO & blacks are almost as dark. But this handheld is just too small for me, I prefer something around 5.5" to 7" big.

    Retroid and AYN are kings in retro handhelds. I love my retroid pocket flip and I have also been waiting for the 2 to come out in the future! The future of gaming and portability will be clamshells I feel and retroid has the best one in the flip. I want more powerful retro handheld that is android or even Linux if they can pull it off! You forgot to mention we may get batocera and Xbox support for this and the 5!!

    Someone said the mini and 5 screen sizes were the same for 4:3, i know theyre not so i did the math, reposting here for others:

    Only thing I wish they could offer is the option to have the joystick and dpad switched. For whatever reason I don't mind playing d-pad centric games when it is lower but playing joystick games when the left joystick is down low is just so uncomfortable to me. Probably still gonna buy it tho, finally a 4:3 device that has some beef.

    How's the software vs the ayaneo pocket S? - it's going to be very hard going back to retroid's clunky software if they hadn't improved from the 4 pro. I HATED shifting back and forth between the two controller layouts in the settings. With the ayaneo it just *worked*. Is that fixed on this?

    • @JoeysRetroHandhelds
      @JoeysRetroHandhelds  9 днів тому

      Might be missing something, but it's a toggle on Retroid from swiping down, and on Ayaneo it's in their sidebar then you have to head in a few menus.

    Great review of a very exciting device! The screen on the RP Mini is a little small for my liking though, so I'm currently trying to decide between an RP5 or an Odin 2 Mini. I'll probably end up with the Odin 2 Mini though, since a couple of my absolute favorite GameCube games are extraordinarily difficult to emulate and I've yet to find any Android handheld chipset other than the SD8 Gen 2 that can throw enough power at them to make them run well and not crash. I'll definitely be looking forward to the RP5 and Odin 2 Mini comparison though!
    ...And yes, I currently have three H700 devices and an RG556 staring at me XD

      @@Neon_Plasma The one everyone knows is Rogue Squadron II, but the big one for me is Star Fox Adventures. That one seems to play just fine on most devices until you get about 20 minutes into it when you take control of Fox McCloud down on Dinosaur Planet, at which point it starts glitching out and crashing every couple minutes on every device I've tried it on except for the Odin 2. Neither the RG556 or RP4 Pro can run it without crashing constantly once you get past the intro and take control of Fox.

    The concept of one device fits all doesn’t quite work, in my experience. I sold many Anbernic devices when I decided on the Odin 2 and I love it. Following your HD texture guides, those systems play wonderfully on it. For 4:3 retro games it’s far from optimal.
    Looking at that beautiful Mini, I think it might just solve it. The 960p bezeless 4:3 OLED seems too good to be true. It looks perfect, and I don’t use the term easily. So Odin 2 with its 6” display for the newer/widescreen systems and the Mini for 4:3 systems with great portability. Mmm, sounds good to me.
