@@SpoonTaco That's what I figured, just wasn't sure. That definitely makes it harder to compare the two screens for just 4:3 content. I think I would be happier with the wider screen even if I lose some height in the process. Never used a 4:3 screen though

@@azenyr the hacks cause visual glitches most of the time because of pop in. But yeah alot of people do forget u can do that lol. Some of us just prefer 4:3 ratio
I will take a look but in my experience widescreen hacks never work very well. Although dreamcast widescreen hacks is admittedly quite good most of the time
@adinwalls Dreamcast is one of my most played consoles, so I kinda know Flycast very well. I should remind people that Flycast has two distinct widescreen hacks, and some games work perfectly with one of them, while others work perfectly with the other one. But I can say that 99% of dreamcast games work perfectly at 16:9 with one of those two hacks. Some dreamcast games actually have a widescreen mode toggle inside the game itself, so no hacks needed. But newer consoles like the PS2 and Gamecube seem to also work pretty well with 16:9 screens. I've tried many of them on my high end android phone and got very good results. But I have not tested many games. I just think that above a certain performance threshold, 16:9 might be a good investment, but I am never sure. This dilemma is real, and I just can't decide between both. I have told myself that I can't buy both 😂
Many widescreen hacks look bad though, cause even if the screen is properly rendering the game in 16:9, the game devs never designed the edges of the screen to be seen in that aspect ratio. I've turned off widescreen hacks in several games because I was tired of seeing environments where the edges aren't fully modeled, and menus where the sides bug out because they were meant to be cut off
You always make me want a cube. I can tell you love the cube with how many devices you compare it to. Also thank you for showing Daijisho on it. I use that for everything and saying it beat the 556 screen may have sold it to me.
Well I haven't compared the screen to the 556 yet but the 556 suffers from that cheap OLED screen effect (I forget what it's called). The Mini has a very natural looking screen. Techdweebs video almost looked 3d because it had so much depth.
To be honest, for a long I was anti anything but 16:9, because I want the best experience for everything. As time has gone on, and after getting a Anbernic SP I'm certainly convinced that 4:3 is ideal for retro gaming. I ended up getting the Odin 2 Mini but I'm considering a Pocket Mini and possibly selling the Odin. If Anbernic had put the updated sticks in the Cube it would be hands down the best device. I'm interested in the 406V for the ergonomics/sticks, but the square screen of the Cube is just so great for 3DS and DS games. Something really cool and special about having the screens stacked on top of each other like they were meant to be. Plus massive gameboy color games :) Anyways, with an Odin 2, rp4 pro and the Cube I'm pretty set and I'll sit this round out on retroid. The mini is pretty awesome though!
That screen quality is worth it IMO. I have a 4 inch screen device and realistically .3 inches smaller is not a big deal. True blacks, faster pixel refresh, vivid colors, higher resolution. Yeah, I’ll take that combo over a slightly bigger IPS. Also, the black version looks like a mini PS Vita, which is pretty cool.
I think that’s the gamble that Retroid took, quality over size. And I’m stuck between wishing they had a larger screen and absolutely loving the quality of it. Gonna play it for a week and see how I feel.
@@adinwalls speaking for myself, my vision forces me to use reading glasses with all handhelds, whether it’s a 7+ inch screen or 2 inches. So for me .3 inch isn’t very significant. But yeah, bigger would’ve been better aesthetically on that form factor, but apparently a 4 inch AMOLED 4:3 screen doesn’t currently exist. If you look at what the upcoming Aya Neo DMG has for example, which has a similar screen but with ~8:7 aspect, I suspect all these small AMOLEDs are being cut from the same process, so options are a bit limited. I’m a big OLED fan, love it on my Steam Deck OLED, so I’m stoked to see a pocket emulation device with that screen quality. Thanks for the nice preview video, Adin.

@@adinwalls amen 🙏 I might even get the RP5 as well for watching movies on. Love your content bro my favourite yter. Looking forward to trying CODM/Warzone on the mini.
Great video! Might even end up costing me money! I currently have an RP2S, a Steam Deck, and a Legion Go. I love my RP2S but I’m considering a Retroid Mini or Pocket 5. Still trying to see if I can justify buying one of those new ones. 😂
I agree that the 2S is too good to write off as dead from the mini launch. Under $100 and it does everything N64 and older perfectly which, imo, is all that is worth doing on that size of screen. Its also a bit more portable than the mini due to thinness. The Pocket 5 intrigues me more. My predictions: RP2S is best pocket device, RP5 will be best "light travel" device, and Steam Deck is best "heavy travel" device.
I really love the 4:3 aspect but I think I'll wait till the RP5 since I want one premium device that can do more consoles in term of aspect ratio. I have my steam deck but I want something less heavy for bed or short session.
I feel like using the B button often, especially if you press Y and B at the same time, will have you knocking your thumb into the right joystick often. What are your thoughts on the placement of the controls? 🍻
I'm guessing that Retroid wanted the Mini to have as much parity with the RP5 as possible, so they opted to go with a smaller screen so it could have an AMOLED display like the RP5, rather than opt for a 4" IPS panel instead. It's a shame that there isn't a 4" 4:3 AMOLED panel available yet. Personally, I would have taken a 4" IPS display over the 3.7" AMOLED display. As much as I love gaming on an OLED screen, I still think that screen size should take precedent over panel technology when it comes to designing a handheld device. But I know there are plenty of people out there who are totally fine with the tradeoff if it means they get that tasty OLED experience, and another company like Anbernic is bound to release their own device that's on par with or perhaps better than the RP Mini when it comes to horsepower, but has a larger 4:3 LCD instead.
Nice video buddy! I think I will sell my 2S and get this... I need a better experience on the 6th gen on a really compact device, and this is astonishing! Amazing screen 😊 Let us know if you get affiliated links!
I need to look into this more. Retroid told me it doesn't support pass through charging but it does charge on the dock but I'm not sure if it charges while gaming.
Did you get crippling slowdown when you wreck in burnout 3 on PS2? No matter what settings I use on my Odin 2 mini i can't fix it. I've seen other people run it no problem
Great review. I own an RG Cube and am considering one. Why do you think the RG Cube is more versatile? Other than Pico-8 and maybe 3DS most other systems are 4:3 (including Windows via Winlator)
For a small handheld, the optimal systems like pico8, Gameboy, Gamegear, Neogeo Pocket etc are all square. And then theres vertical stuff that works well. So it's just such a nice versatile device. HOWEVER, Retroid's Android build is better and their video out setup is generally better (haven't fully tested it yet)
@@adinwalls Pico-8 does look great on it :) What do you mean by 'Retroid's Android build is better' How is it better, isnt it just Android 10 on the RP mini (for now) and Android 13 on the RG Cube? I agree, video out on the RG Cube is terrible - Sound and audio stutters after a minute on different cables and docks.
So my only complaint with this device... Well, it's not even a compaint. It's more of a hypothetical thing, if anything. The retroid pocket 2S, right. This is obviously kinda like the more premium version of that system. But it's literally twice the price. Which is fine, cause of what you're getting, but the rp2S is a good budget option and I don't want them to stop making the 2S because it's still the best device you can get for under 100 dollars.
Do the black bezels on the screen blend in with the glass body in person? I'm holding out for the RP5 but still undecided between the black version for those OLED bezels or the grey one for a classic look.
I noticed you emphasized the recessed analog stick. I'm curious how that compares to the 2S, since I have a rubber grip on mine and some games like Sonic Adventure 2 end up forcing me to remove it since it blocks the full range of movement. It's not as severe as the RP3, but still. I just wish it was sticking out more like the one on the RP2+.
You can't please everyone. I think it's good for what is intended for. Pocketable. If you need any more power, then look for steam deck or rog ally or something similar.
great comparison video. different from the few others that have come out within the last couple of days. though i am waiting to see the accessories for it to see if they're worth picking up 😭
@@adinwalls Thanks, mini ordered as probably play more 4:3. Might save the Cube for 1:1 / vertical. Pinball games like Pro Pinball Big Race USA work really well on the Cube.
They should have kept the rp2S design.... Everything looks like a ayn , Aya neo clone. Rp4pro will be more enticing when the rp mini and 5 comes out with a price drop.
Don't think they'll stop making them , cause you can still buy PS2 controllers and they stoped making PS2 years ago. They'll probably make less models or just make the most popular models. You can still buy cassettes and recorders, discmans ( just not by Sony) and the cassette was out in 1969!
Im glad you compared it to the RG Cube. I have the cube and was wondering if the RP5 or RPmini would be worth buying. I think ill just wait for the next generation of handhelds for a generational bump in power.
just tried out CEMU beta on my OnePlus 8T, which uses a SnapDragoon 865. so far it's near perfect. Safe to say as of now, WiiU will be another system playable on the RP mini
@adinwalls that's actually exactly why I got it. I like my high performance AAA games on the deck but don't wanna clutter it with emulators so I ordered the rp5 specifically for ps2 and GameCube
You need to see if Android 13 works. I’m getting this unit soon. I looked up the requirements for A13 and all you need is 2GB of ram for it to run. I will be trying to flash when I get my device. Ordered this to run Switch better. Hoping for the best!
This was purely for time sake, full test coming soon. But I generally do the testing and only show the highlights anyway, I think it's pretty boring to put in a video.
If this device is for premium buyer as you said Then why wouldn’t a premium buyer rather go for an odin 2 mini instead ? I really hope you can make a video where you help someone decide between this and the odin 2 mini also mini is your current favourite i assume so it would be perfect comparison in terms of power (i really want to see battery comparison between two) if bigger device lasts longer then i would go for odin 2 mini and if this lasts longer then rp for the win !
I am of the opinion that this isn't even in competition with the Odin 2 mini, because even though it's a premium priced device, the Odin 2 mini is still $139 more! To me the RG Cube and Retroid's existing devices are a more relevant comparison - and possibly the RG406V. And, yes, the Odin 2 mini is my current daily driver mostly because of build quality and it's the most powerful Android device I own. And it will win against the RP Mini everyday in my opnion.
Retro Game Corps recently got copyright strike 2 times by Nintendo so I recommend not showing any nintendo games at all in your vids (unless im stupid and sonic generations isnt nintendo, i assumed cuz it was on 3ds)
Ah sorry I may have edited the context out. Stubbs at retrohandhelds experienced a dodgy sd card cover. Mine ws slightly out of line but nothing to be worried about.
Its expensive, but I think its fair. The RP5 is bigger and only cost a little more. Its for that SD chip. PS2 and Wii. In your F*cking pocket. Say grace.

I really enjoy the reviews but this appears to be a very niche product. I guess some adults do have time to game on the go out of the house on a regular basis but that surprises me.
I would wager that "outside of the house on a regular basis" is not the majority use case for consumers of these products; people want to play in bed or around the house when their kids or significant others are already using the tv/main console.
@@adinwalls I am always surprised when I hear people use them in busy public places; I'm not comfortable giving up my situational awareness in places like that. Maybe a plane ride where it's mostly static environment, but certainly not in a queue or on a bus or the like.

Thank you for playing limbo! Love that game.
It's such a special game.
@@adinwalls still have a discord? I can't find the link to it
I really love the 4:3 aspect but I think I'll wait till the RP5 since I want one premium device that can do more consoles in term of aspect ratio. I have my steam deck but I want something less heavy for bed or short session.
Looks pretty sweet. For the quick emulation test, you were running a bunch of 16:9 stuff, the last type of game I'd emulate on this thing.
I think the biggest issue is the screen size. It could be a 4"
I feel like using the B button often, especially if you press Y and B at the same time, will have you knocking your thumb into the right joystick often. What are your thoughts on the placement of the controls? 🍻
The controls feel very natural to me
Been waiting for this review
You're the second person to say that
Nice video buddy! I think I will sell my 2S and get this... I need a better experience on the 6th gen on a really compact device, and this is astonishing! Amazing screen 😊 Let us know if you get affiliated links!
Links are in the description. And yes, apart from the price, a very worthy successor to the 2s
With the dock does it charge and output video at the same time? The Cube couldnt and it was a big downer for me, also was a pretty clunky experience.
I need to look into this more. Retroid told me it doesn't support pass through charging but it does charge on the dock but I'm not sure if it charges while gaming.
I was so confused at first (it doesn't take much), I was thinking this was a video for a new Abxylute device :p
Lol...no
Did you get crippling slowdown when you wreck in burnout 3 on PS2? No matter what settings I use on my Odin 2 mini i can't fix it. I've seen other people run it no problem
I'm crashing as much as can and getting no slowdown at 2x resolutioin
Great review. I own an RG Cube and am considering one. Why do you think the RG Cube is more versatile? Other than Pico-8 and maybe 3DS most other systems are 4:3 (including Windows via Winlator)
For a small handheld, the optimal systems like pico8, Gameboy, Gamegear, Neogeo Pocket etc are all square. And then theres vertical stuff that works well. So it's just such a nice versatile device. HOWEVER, Retroid's Android build is better and their video out setup is generally better (haven't fully tested it yet)
@@adinwalls Pico-8 does look great on it :)
What do you mean by 'Retroid's Android build is better' How is it better, isnt it just Android 10 on the RP mini (for now) and Android 13 on the RG Cube?
I agree, video out on the RG Cube is terrible - Sound and audio stutters after a minute on different cables and docks.
So my only complaint with this device... Well, it's not even a compaint. It's more of a hypothetical thing, if anything.
The retroid pocket 2S, right. This is obviously kinda like the more premium version of that system. But it's literally twice the price. Which is fine, cause of what you're getting, but the rp2S is a good budget option and I don't want them to stop making the 2S because it's still the best device you can get for under 100 dollars.
Yes. I made that exact point. If they discontinue the 2s and the 4pro I think it would be a mistake.
That's some beautiful color grading on the video
😍
Do the black bezels on the screen blend in with the glass body in person? I'm holding out for the RP5 but still undecided between the black version for those OLED bezels or the grey one for a classic look.
Yes it looks so good in black.
Just checked and if I eyeball it, it seems the 2S stick protrudes about 2mm and the Mini protrudes about 1mm.
@@adinwalls and the walls around the sticks look pretty similar.
You can't please everyone. I think it's good for what is intended for. Pocketable. If you need any more power, then look for steam deck or rog ally or something similar.
Good point.
It’s really nice, I can’t wait for the RP5 that’s an upgrade
Yup RP5 is a ripper
If u think the screen is too small then just get the RP5. This is more for those who want more pocketability plus the power.
I think the compromise is worth it given this incredible quality screen.
I like your media test. Camping in South Africa video when?
Lol. Ironically in this incredible climate and wilderness I'm not a big camper.
Thank you Adin
great comparison video. different from the few others that have come out within the last couple of days. though i am waiting to see the accessories for it to see if they're worth picking up 😭
Retroid cases are usually pretty good.
How would you say the screen size compares to the RG Cube? It is stightly smaller but do the bezels make it look smaller than it is?
Ah it's as you'd expect. The mini has a better screen but the square LCD is so nice for square systems and 3ds
@@adinwalls Thanks, mini ordered as probably play more 4:3. Might save the Cube for 1:1 / vertical. Pinball games like Pro Pinball Big Race USA work really well on the Cube.
@guest21984 great. Yes I think the Mini is a more practical daily device
The knife near the screen always makes me anxious
When connecting video out are the black bars real or fake?
I'm not sure what you mean by black bars being real or fake.
They should have kept the rp2S design.... Everything looks like a ayn , Aya neo clone.
Rp4pro will be more enticing when the rp mini and 5 comes out with a price drop.
OLED will always be better than LCD, always
ITS FINALLY HERE
Don't think they'll stop making them , cause you can still buy PS2 controllers and they stoped making PS2 years ago.
Just buy the odin2 then. There you already have your generational bump in power.
Sticks make it (the RG Cube) un-usable in some games for me.
If the Mini can play GC and Wii with that form factor, it might just be my endgame device.
It'll be terrible for gc and wii games cuz of the screen
Ah I didn't get to any Wii games but I will definitely be putting it in my full review. So far so good with GameCube.
@@hhxte3185 Wrong. GC and Wii both are natively 4:3. That screen is amazing for both of them, and the SD865 can emulate both very well.
@@adinwalls That'd be great, because so far I've only seen people testing GC and PS2 on it.
just tried out CEMU beta on my OnePlus 8T, which uses a SnapDragoon 865. so far it's near perfect. Safe to say as of now, WiiU will be another system playable on the RP mini
Ooooooh!
I pre ordered the RP5. I feel like that screen is too small for the power it has
It for a very specific audience. I love is as a Steamdeck companion.
I beat Limbo on my RP3+, playing the secret levels now.
Oh really?! The Vita version on RP3+? So you managed to get it running?
I hope companies eventually stop making those joystick lights, they look so stupid
I agree, but just turn them off if you dont like them.
I like them. RGB all day
@@adinwalls Im inbetween, dim but in 'chasing' mode.
Not in the weeds with Emu testing, are we all a bit strike scared.
This was purely for time sake, full test coming soon. But I generally do the testing and only show the highlights anyway, I think it's pretty boring to put in a video.
Nice vid thx!
why you didn't show gameplay of GOW2? that sure make difference..
This was just a Quick Look at everything. A full test is coming.
There is already a gow2 gameplay video on the retroid official youtube channel -.-
@@Watamel0n oh yes.. but i always prefer end user test than who make the device.. 😉
Does it fit well into the dock?
Yes it fits well
@adinwalls thank you. I'm waiting for my Retroid Pocket 5 base. I didn't opt for the mini. But it looks really beautiful and very well built.
Because OLED will always be better than LCD
Retro Game Corps recently got copyright strike 2 times by Nintendo so I recommend not showing any nintendo games at all in your vids (unless im stupid and sonic generations isnt nintendo, i assumed cuz it was on 3ds)

The black mini looks kind of like a little Wii U Gamepad with it’s rounded edges
That’s true!
What exactly is "jank" about the TF card cover?
You mention this in the video but never say what the issue is.
Ah sorry I may have edited the context out. Stubbs at retrohandhelds experienced a dodgy sd card cover. Mine ws slightly out of line but nothing to be worried about.
Have the Odin 2 mini and retroid pocket 4 pro don’t touch the rp4 pro since I got my Odin 2 mini can’t wait for the Odin 3 honestly
Hehe same. Once the Odin 2 mini arrived, the RP4PRO Got neglected... Shame poor thing. My son with inherit it.
Smart of you to avoid the gamecube.
Mostly necessity because I was pushed for time, but yes I avoided any gameplay of games made by a certain company.
Its expensive, but I think its fair. The RP5 is bigger and only cost a little more. Its for that SD chip. PS2 and Wii. In your F*cking pocket. Say grace.
Any thoughts on the RP mini vs Ayaneo Pocket micro?
The Ayaneo is overpriced and completely flat, therefore more pocketable than the mini. The mini instead is more powerful and more ergonomic.
This ☝️
@@Watamel0n Ayaneo Micro is LCD
They should compare with Ayaneo DMG instead
I think if they can help develop the emulators these will sell faster when improve processors or out, imagine playing 360 or ps3 on android?
That would be great. If a company invests in the developers they will do well
Just a random UA-camr lol that was TechDweeb at his finest lol. I like your reviews, I just don't see this device being good for anyone they should fix the positions of the ABXY to the Joysticks the RP2S is still my favourite of the Retroids but I let go of all my Retroids except the 4 Pro because my kids use it.
Not sure what you mean by fix the position?
@@adinwalls a device that can play ps2 should have the xbox layout, not nintendo.
Hey I'm as random as they come!
Full review coming?
Yes
@@adinwalls yay!!!!
You'll be surprised, alot of comments are about travel, commuting, being in queues.
@@adinwalls I am always surprised when I hear people use them in busy public places; I'm not comfortable giving up my situational awareness in places like that. Maybe a plane ride where it's mostly static environment, but certainly not in a queue or on a bus or the like.
I get a high Pulse when he use the knife in the near of the Display 😅

With these devices wearing the SD865, I can't sit and not mention the razor edge bundle, it's sitting with the modified 888 chip
The g3x, il list below the pros
Qualcomm Snapdragon 888
Has a smaller size transistor (5 versus 7 nm)
Higher GPU frequency (~35%)
Performs 35% better in floating-point computations
Supports 16% higher memory bandwidth (51.2 against 44 GB/s)
Shows better (up to 20%) AnTuTu 10 score - 908K vs 753K
Better instruction set architecture
That and it sports a larger higher resolution screen and android versions, it can also be used with light phone use, using apps to connect to cellular devices
