In this video I take an in-depth look at my Big Build Free Standing Bookcase that I made on Episode 4 of Handmade: Britain's Best Woodworker. I give you some more detail in the design ideas and how I wanted it to match the brief and the types of joinery used to produce the finished product. I also reflect on what could have been done better and what I intend to do with this rather huge piece of furniture!
I also talk about winning immunity during the skills challenge (no one was more surprised than I was!) and Nate being the woodworker leaving this show this week.
Welcome to all the new subscribers who have joined since the programme started and I hope you enjoy some of my other content on the channel😀.
As ever, thank you so much for your continued support in my disability woodworking adventures. Best Wishes, Leo Winstanley

Hi Leo, I have been enjoying watching Britain's best wood worker, good to see you are doing well, that shelving looks amazing and I like the scorched wood on the dowel end it give's it a more natural finish. That wood and resin finish table dose look great. Cant wait for Sunday's episode. Take care and catch you soon👍

Another great build and a simple but inspired candelabra - I often think the more complicated creatively artistic the skills challenge the less well they turn out in such a short time. Love the bookcase design and style - again I'm a big fan of functional simplicity and the use of seriously accomplished joinery. Yeh, blow that trumpet Leo!

Really kind of you Ben, cheers pal. The candle holder thing is only really simple tbh, but I think at times we’re guilty of over thinking / over complicating stuff. Roll on Ep 5 tonight 😀👍

Great bookcase you just keep getting better and better. If you take the top shelf off, you could make a matching bench out of it.

The bookcase was a bit naff, candle holder was awesome ... actually fist pumped the air and shouted YES when you won the challenge round ✊... but joking aside, your bookcase turned out really well, a bit more scorching on the dowels and it would've been perfect ... a simple but highly effective design 👍
For the dowels I'd epoxy a threaded rod into one end of a dowel and then epoxy a threaded insert into the other end, that way you can then screw each dowel to the next forming a nice strong joint ... very top/bottom you can use a nut/bolt.
Totally agree with your approach to design, something which is edgy and futuristic may look good in the moment but not so much a few years down the line.

    • @Hand-i-Craft

Thanks Barry and as always really appreciate the support. The threaded insert is a great idea and I think I’ll be using that to secure the ash dowels 👍👍

Watched episodes 3&4 last night. You’re doing great. I have to say, I felt the skills challenges were very unfair on you so it was great to see you win it. Should be very proud, been watching you for a while now and have to say I’m thrilled for you. Super stuff 👏🏼

So good Leo and I’m looking forward to the next show.
I’m interested mate, with these new techniques you have learnt, the big builds and new tools you have used, do you think this may change the way you make things going forward?
I appreciate that you And the other contestants had a bit of physical help but has the show changed anything in the way you do things and what you may make going forward? 👍🏾

    • @Hand-i-Craft
      @Hand-i-Craft  11 місяців тому +1

Cheers Ash, it’s a good question pal. It hasn’t changed how I work in my own place much tbh, I think largely due the pace / speed you worked on the show. You just couldn’t work like that in the real world as you’d burn out in no time, plus working on your own you have to plan logistical stuff like moving things etc in much more detail as you haven’t got the luxury of support.
I did learn a lot though and that has helped me back home. The importance of planning in the design phase really helped and following a series of build phases. I think being down there also made me think seriously about ditching the table saw in favour of a large bandsaw and tracksaw set up instead👍.
The technicians were fantastic pal, great bunch of folk😀😀👍👍

It would be a good idea to take off the bottom shelf to reduce the height, then reduce the width but not too much otherwise you may find the fixed sizes of shelf thickness and ash dowel diameter may become too heavy and give an overall chunky look. May not be a bad thing if you want to go more "rustic" but at the moment it's still looking fairly modern.

A bit late as I meant to post this on the coffee table one. Why didn't you cut the mitres with the tracksaw as you did for the light boxes?

It’s a very good question and to be honest Mike I can’t remember. Possibly could have been the thickness but I honestly can’t remember
