I've seen a few mistakes you might want to correct.
1.) You can have 2 service dogs. I myself have 2 service dogs. Each is for different disabilities and does different tasks.
2.) Service dogs still do need to be licensed with the pet tags. However, some states, such as California, have mandatory service dogs in training registry, and voluntary Service dog registries. These make it easier on animal control and can be used in court. They give you a tag stating they are a service dog, and you just have a doctor note stating you need a service dog for a disability. You can get them from animal control.
3.) ADA does not protect service dogs in training. If state law says they can't be in public without a professional trainer, you must listen to these laws and have a trainer. Otherwise you must stick to pet friendly places.
4.) There are no agencies that register service dogs besides animal control for some states. There are no tests for these. You can go through the CGC testing just as proof for yourself and in court if you need proof of training. But there is no registries or certifications outside of the state registries.
Side note for tasks: emotional support is not a task. This is considered an emotional support animal and is not protected for public access.
For therapy dogs there is mandatory training and certification with the company. Not any dog can be a therapy dog.

The VA hospital where I go has a registry of Service Dogs. Surprisingly there was only 5 real service dogs at this VA hospital. On any given day your would see 10 to 15 dogs. My Damian and Dunkin are PSD.

@Amelia Reigel there are no certifications for service animals in the US. You can train them and have them be classified service animals. But they need to go through a lot of training. My service dog is going to be 4 in January and still learning tasks. You can have them go through a public access test just to prove they are trained, but there is no really certifications. Some VAs, like mentioned above, have registries, but that's more of for the hospitals info and holds no real meaning in the laws eyes. You can 100% do it on your own, but just be prepared for how much goes into it. And I would recommend asking trainers and experienced people for advice when you are having issues.
If you are in Canada or else where, the laws are different. In some parts of Canada they have tests for you to go through to be licensed as a handler with your service dog. Japan has organizations who train service dogs and certify them. So definitely check laws where you live.
Also if you live in the states check state laws for service dogs in training because they have no rights federally.

service dogs do not have papers or certifications. you can train your own dog as well and no tag is needed along with vest but it is recommended to put one on as to not deal with public access issues.

There is no mandatory registry in CA, in training or not. It's a dog license, nothing more. If you have a SD, the fees are waived, and that is the reason for the different tag.

Remember that you must have a disability first. Simply wanting your dog with you for emotional support, isn’t a service dog. ADA rules are written down explaining it all. Miniature horses also qualify. But not snakes, parrots, monkeys, etc. Please respect those with real disabilities by not abusing the laws. The sight of a snake will trigger seizures in my wife. Please leave your pets at home.

    @mavisme4645 4 роки тому +98

For the most part this is correct. However, I believe that the ADA allows miniature horses to fall under the listing of a service animal too. And, of course, there is no legitimate registry in the US for service dogs. If someone says their dog is official and has SD registration papers to prove it, they are most likely lying or confused.

@@jacobperkins865 - Unfortunately, yes. However the standard to which service dogs are expected to behave is very high, and the average pet has no where NEAR that level of training. If you are not disabled, and you claim that your dog is a service dog, you face fines and possible jail time. If you are only wanting your dog to accompany you in hotels and on airplanes, you only need your dog to be an Emotional Support Animal. This requires you to have a doctor's note saying you require the dog for the betterment of your health, but there isn't the extensive training expected like a service dog requires. Maybe look into that if a service dog isn't a legitimate requirement. :)

that is NOT SO........... i trained several. takes a good year or so. and YES every dog i have is LEAGL with a lis and assigned number given by the STATE! THIS IS WHY THERE IS SO MUCH CONFUSION. yes, you dont have to go that round and can own one IF they been properly trained however it is supposed to be trained according to disability. some of the laws are also based on RENTAL issues people use to have. So for that HUD allows simple letters. Then people think that means a letter makes it legal and lol it clearly is not. If it was that simple, their value would not be so high cost. yes, to finalize a LEGAl service, there is a way. Each state has a form for Trained Disability dogs for at least a year of training and they assign then a NUMBER for THAT dog and its signed by its certified trainer. I KNOW. I have assigned a number card with STATE SEAL for every dog I have trained. I never have an issue. I simply laminated his card and attached it to his harness. and their ARE a couple of known organizations like PAWS as i mentioned above who use to register them. My brother in law is deaf and he went through paws i think. (will have to ask him this week to verify). His dog was TATTOOED its service number on his inner thigh cause they use to do that.. His dog passed five years ago ) ADA/States do not require that today as i mentioned also. but yes, that's where you get the legal lis/assigned number. it comes from the state you live in.

This is not a video about making your dog into a service dog this video is you complaining that people don't train their dogs to be service dogs. Let them get in trouble and learn the hard ways. Someone like myself who wants to train my dog to be a service dog I'm looking for info. You don't have to be physically disabled to have a service dog. A service dog can help you taking your meds on time which is very important, a service dog can keep you calm during panic attacks because people out there suffer...SUFFFER from them. Suffering is not the way to go. Not a great video for tips these are just complaining and common sense .

Thank you for the information video. I'm a Veteran with diagnosed PTSD. My doctor suggested a service dog, trained for my needs. As stated the dogs are expensive to train and can take up to 2 years for a service dog to be provided, provided you meet their standards. Which is acceptable since they are providing the time in training and letting us veterans have them at no cost to us.
I don't have that long to waste waiting. I went to rescues trying to find a suitable dog.
I wanted a small dog for convenience, but it didn't turn out to be this way, which is fine. The dog I got is a Belgian Malinois a kind of German shepherd used by police departments and the military for guard dogs.
This dog was actually mostly trained or she was train but had been a while since she used those skills. I'm working with her now. She rarely barks believe out not which for the breed is unusual from my experience.
I still want her to speak just not at just anything. I want her to alert me too.
I have suffered PTSD for 47 years and never knew it until 4 yrs ago when the VA diagnosed me.
I have Improved a little but not enough to stay employed. A service dog could possibly save my life in the long term.
Though I didn't want a pet, having her as a service dog will be something I look forward to. If she can help me, it will have all been worth it getting her. I do realize we will bond closely over time, but I do see her as a pet. I see her as a service dog companion. I think a pet is something was gets because they like animals. I got mine out of need not a want.

While it is horrible that people can pretend that their pets are service dogs it is NOT disappointing that you can self train a service dog. Many people who need these dogs can't afford to get them professional trained. Also Minatare Horses can be used as service animals as well. And also a handler can have more than one service dog. If you see a real SD handler with two dogs than you can confer that the dogs each do a different task for their handler.

I completely agree. My dogs are both trained for my medical alerts, and my bigger dog assists me with mobility issues. I didn't specifically train them. They've just learned over time. But my older, smaller dog doesn't do well in public spaces (too hyper) but my bigger, younger dog is wonderful, so she's beginning service dog training (by me, I've trained dogs for everything but agility) after we have her spayed in about a month.
Years ago, my husband looked into getting me a service dog, and it was thousands. I train my dogs, and they've learned to help me just fine. I can absolutely teach a calm dog how to behave in public. My older one loves people, but she has so much trouble containing her excitement. It's not a behavior issue, but people love to say it is. It's just her personality, just as all people have different personalities. But at home she's my biggest help.
I never tell anyone to discount their pet's abilities. My niece had a cat that alerts my sister when my niece is having a panic attack.

    • @mavisme4645
      @mavisme4645 2 роки тому

Monique Aguirre - If you don't have a lot of experience training dogs, trying to train your own diabetic alert dog is probably going to be outside of your wheelhouse. I would suggest minimally getting the help of a professional trainer, and better yet, one that has experience with K9 nose-work. A diabetic alert dog must frequently 'sniff' his handler for signs of glucose changes and then he needs to recognize that something is going on and be able to alert to it. He needs to be trained to make independent decisions (intelligent disobedience) where he will continue to alert even when told to stop or go away. There are many steps to training a reliable diabetic alert dog, and the training is reinforced throughout the dog's life. In addition to all of that, your dog needs to have impeccable manners out in public, which in and of itself, can take a full year to train to consistency. It's a LOT of work and time to invest, and even then, quite a few dogs are washed from their programs each year because they can't handle the stress of being out in public all the time.

Heyy! so I saw quite a few ppl wo can't afford one, and are raising there own, so here are a couple helpful things as a SD User who trained there own Dog!
1.!This is For People who want to Train the Dog for Epeleptic Seizures! -
So, My Bestfriend, Myla, Has a Epeleptic Service Dog, Mars. She told me that She taught Mars by, Whenever She had a Seizure, She swabed herself, Let Mars Sniff the Cotten, Ask Mars for a Spefcific Motion, Such as "Paw" or Jumping on Her, (I use on my Dog) and gives her a Treat. She does this so when Mars picks up the scent, he does the motion, in her case she taught "Paw" to Mars, so Mars does that when She's About to have a Seizure. You Continue giving them the treat when they alert you until you feel comfortable with out them!
    2. !For People with Anxiety! - My Dog's Task so hopefully It'll be a bit easier to Understand!
As for my Dog, and Me, Things I deal with from Anxiety are : Scratching atself, Pick my Nails, Heavy Breathing and Not Feeling Comfortable with Certain People.
-Okay so How I trained my dog to help me stop Sratch myslef is when I put a treat in my hand and start purposely doing it. Daisy, My Golden learned to dig her face into where my hand was by sniffing the treat, and when I gave it to her, I would just Pet Her Face, showing her what I was doing.
-Nail Picking : I have a treat in my hand while training for this task, and her "Motion" is to Start Jumping on Me. When she does this, I get distracted and wrap her into a Hug. This gives me time to focus while relieving my tension by petting her.
-Heavy Breathing, Okay this one, I use DPT. My Lie down on a Safe Spot, Motioning for Daisy to comeover and lie on top on me like a heavy comfort blanket. I can't explain the feeling warm furry body on top of me, it just helps me relax.
    3. !Tips!
-Okay Okay, This will have to be the last one as its taken me forever to write this, But. Here are some of my Personal Expeirence Tips.
-TRy not to take your SD any where too crazy when you first take them home. I took about a month's process training her, then i waited another month before we really went out. I would only take her to some nice local restuarants, grocery shopping, until i felt really comfortable and felt good together.
-Give your dog stay at home time too! Ofcourse your dog is going to about every where with you, but you have to spoil them too 😍.
-Know you Rights! I know there will be lots of harrasment, from shop owners, Crazy People, and Even then, dont be afraid to reach out, It's worth it.
-I really hope this helped, M and Daisy!

It’s fine to know your rights due to crazy shop owners, customers or employees that are misinformed about the ADA rules HOWEVER acting like you are an expert because you have a SD can often backfire. In other words be calm, nice when explaining whatever the problem is that you are having in a store, etc. For God!s sake plz don’t go screaming & making a scene like the gal ( Dominique Weems) who has a YT channel called Service Dog Paws. She isn’t an expert & does a lot of things that she shouldn’t one being her screaming at ppl when she believes a person has a pet instead of a SD. Sure the person she’s screaming about their untrained SD is wrong, but she’s even more wrong with what SHE’S doing!!!! Be the better person & politely inform & leave. Acting like a crazy person isn’t the way to handle a SD situation.

Honestly I agree, service dogs need to perform up to high standards and no regular person can train them to do so. I wish there was a more secure process, like a person registers their disability and can get their dog trained at a more afforable price according to their needs. Too many people abuse this system and discredit the actual people who need them

I wish someone would redo this video who actually knows what they are talking about. Its bad enough that people dont know the law or the Ada law and it makes it worse when people put wrong info out there claiming they know what they are talking about when clearly they don't!

while you can have one, just like a doctors note, does not make it a legal service dog. you go to court and prove it. ADA laws go with state laws. They made it easier so that HUD can get many disabled in apts without these hassles in expense. However, you try to get your dog in the airport. etc... Registering is not nec required, that is true. HOWEVER. those will professionally service dogs usually WANT theirs to be registered. The way you prove it is to have it REGISTERED. and yes, that requires the signature of a proper trainer witness with yours. I have trained, I have registered several, including mine. And each legit LEGAL service dog has been assigned a number. Whats Your dog's number with the state? just-food for thought. its really a big opps on congress's plate being passed to us all... They have made a mess in ADA laws.

*Well behaved dogs get to go every where with you and have a great time.
As much as I loved my first dog we didn't bring her to many public settings since she would just bark and bark all the time. Not only that, she had a weird thing of peeing when she got excited at meeting new people. Needless to say, unless it was in a spacious place where she didn't feel the need to let the alarms go off, it was not so much of a "great time".
I'd understand if you wanted to bring your well behaved pooch everywhere, but if your pooch is absolutely bonkers then it just doesn't make sense. While there are places where your pet would be fine as long as space is kept, there are many where it is just not possible. For the safety of others pets and your own.

No. this isn't about your dogs or your pets or little sparkles. this is about DISABLED PEOPLE. if you aren't disabled, YOU DON'T GET A SERVICE DOG. it's literally all that is. it's not a privileges', it's not an advantage, it's like disabled parking because you can't walk that far outside or else you faint, or getting hooked up to a ventilator because you can't breathe right. service dogs are an ACCOMODATION. you wanna be disabled so bad? have your dog as a service dog? go blind, sell your dog because you can't take care of it anymore and buy a real service dog for 15K :)
if your dog wants to go outside, take it to the park. it LITERALLY does not care whether or not it gets to see Paris or Spain or the Eiffel tower, let alone your god damn grocery store. and hey, guess what? the law doesn't care what you think dogs should be able to do and where they should be able to go !

  • @nixon742
    @nixon742 2 роки тому

a lot of ppl in the comments don't know what a service dog is and what they need and don't need. and plus this video doesn't really tell you how to get a service dog.
but if you want a service dog you must have a disability that interferes with your life or living.
no, you do not need papers or registrations for a service dog but if it school-related or work you might need a doctors to note verifying that it's a task trained service dog needed in ur everyday life. service dogs don't need to wear a vest but I personally like to put a vest on mine because ppl might try and pet him or I might have public access issues because of him looking like an everyday dog.
any dog can be a service dog. from a tiny chiuahua to a big great dane any dog can be task trained but it might be hard to have a big dog under a table at a restaurant or have a tiny chihuahua alert you and do DPT on you while you have a panic attack or pass out which is why you might wanna think about what breed you want as a service dog and where you'll get it.
no other animal like a cat, fish, hog, cow or other exotic animals can be a service animal due to public health and safety reasons, plus I'm pretty sure a snake isn't going to help you when you pass out or go into an episode.
yes, you can train your own service dog but it might be hard to if you never trained a dog or its your first time, do ALLOOOT of research when training your dog, what kind of training do you want to do, what are you training him or her for, and are u gonna use treats while doing so. i don't use treats personally and it works amazing for me and the other people with service dogs i helped but what about you? that's up to u to find out.
lastly do not fake a service dog what so ever, you are breaking a law and tampering with medically equipment if you dog trys to lung or bark at real service dog, you can also get into some deep shit if you cause the person to go into an episode and passout and can lead u to some charges or jus being banned from ur fav store.not to mention its also a health violaation because of the fact that your dog is sniffing licking and probably peeing and pooping in the store can transmit diseases or cause an alergic reaction.
    thas all i gotta say
if u have questions go ahead and askkk

I did a paper on this and the reason we don't have a legal license for service dogs in the USA is because disabled people back in the 1970's didn't want to have to prove that they were disabled everywhere they go. you don't want to have to provide proof that you need your wheelchair to go shopping every day, do you? that was the thing- it violated civil rights. p.s they had already had licensing for service dogs at that point, but took it away because disabled people didn't like it.
