This video helps me a lot, I was figured out struggle and release but i was unaware about other two flow and recovery, i was thinking "what am i missing it".Thx buddy you added value in my life❤
Completely different take on what flow state is. What you explained is literally what I do whenever anything goes wrong. Can't sleep? Relax until I'm focused enough to stay awake to a point of no return. Also not sure if I would say flow is like a boulder rolling down a hill, because YOU are the boulder. It's just things are so seamless and easy to grasp.
wow. This video is interesting, I never saw struggle as the pathway to the flow state, always as an obstacle between it. You're right, the reason I struggle is because I am trying to go into the state, if i wasn't entering that zone, I wouldn't feel struggle/stress at all. Thankyou!!!
Great video. Understanding these processes really helps me try to "hijack" the frustration of ADHD, not having enough dopamine in the brain feels like the surfing analogy of paddling out and failing over and over. I would be interested to see research into flow state's differences in ADHD, the "hyperfocus" we reach feels much like this deep flow state but intense and uncontrollable... like creative madness... I once wrote a novel-length story in 20 hours, no sleep, forgetting to eat and only breaking for the bathroom. But, we have to spend far longer in the struggle zone, and the 'flow' activates less often 😥 Medication helps, but not in learning how to direct where the focus should go. I'm hopeful that understanding the methodology here can help me unlock and channel that focus in a healthier way.
The cycle of flow here is the masculine avenue. This process for me is more about practice in contrast to struggle. The verbiage here is the over blown masculine psychedelic hyped mind state. 6:51
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🌊 *Flow isn't an on-off switch; it's a cycle of four stages: struggle, release, flow, and recovery, key to consistent peak performance.* 01:09 🧘 *Physiological relaxation responses similar to meditation can be triggered by various activities, quieting the prefrontal cortex and fostering unique insights.* 02:15 🏄 *Extreme athletes experiencing "flow" demonstrate razor-sharp focus, leading to extraordinary physical feats, paving the way for understanding the flow cycle.* 03:40 ⚙️ *The struggle phase, the first step of the flow cycle, involves pushing limits, inducing stress, and battling the urge to quit-an essential precursor to achieving flow.* 05:31 🌬️ *Release, the second phase, offers a break from active engagement, allowing the subconscious to take over, crucial for triggering the relaxation response before entering flow.* 06:14 🚀 *Flow, the peak of the cycle, manifests as a rapid acceleration of focus and creativity, driven by a mix of neurochemicals, enhancing performance and pattern recognition.* 06:55 💤 *Recovery, the final stage, enables the body and mind to recuperate from the exertion of the Flow State, replenishing neurotransmitters and reducing accumulated stress.* 08:30 🌊 *Understanding the flow cycle allows intentional navigation through its stages, recognizing where one is and what's needed to enter flow repeatedly.* 09:56 🔄 *Initiating the struggle phase, the hardest part of the cycle, is crucial; avoidance stalls the cycle, while engagement sets the flow cycle in motion.* Made with HARPA AI
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🌊 *Understanding the Flow Cycle* - Flow is a cyclical process with four stages: Struggle, Release, Flow, and Recovery. - Dr. Herbert Benson's research on the relaxation response and Stephen Cutler's study of extreme athletes contributed to mapping the flow cycle. 03:40 🏋️♂️ *Struggle Phase: Key Insights* - Struggle is the first phase of the flow cycle, involving hard work and pushing cognitive and physical limits. - Stress neurochemicals like norepinephrine and cortisol are released, creating a feeling of unsolvability, but interrupting this phase resets the cycle. - Persisting through struggle is crucial, as it is a sign that you're on track for flow. 05:31 🧘♀️ *Release Phase: Techniques and Benefits* - Release is the second phase, where stepping back allows the subconscious to take over. - Brainwave patterns shift to alpha frequency, and Benson's relaxation response is triggered. - Suggestions for release include taking a boring break, paying attention to surroundings, or engaging in simple activities. 06:14 🚀 *Flow State: Characteristics and Neurochemistry* - Flow is the main event, characterized by razor-sharp focus and heightened creativity. - The brain produces Theta wave patterns, and a cocktail of neurochemicals like dopamine and serotonin is released. - Flow is a state of deep absorption and high pattern recognition, driving peak performance. 07:48 😴 *Recovery Phase: Importance and Techniques* - Recovery is essential after the Flow State, allowing the body and mind to recuperate neurochemically. - Active recovery methods such as ice baths, saunas, and quality sleep reduce allostatic load and boost resilience. - The flow afterglow, a satisfying feeling of accomplishment, is experienced during recovery. 09:13 ⚙️ *Mastering the Flow Cycle* - Starting the struggle phase is a challenge; it involves overcoming avoidance or engagement gaps. - Engaging in the struggle is the hardest part to master, but once achieved, moving through the flow cycle becomes easier. - Gracefully persisting through struggle, releasing rapidly, flowing deeply, and recovering aggressively are key aspects of mastering the flow cycle. So good. I am so grateful to have come across your iterations of this work at this time, as I am working on my own book, The Shift, and I consider understanding this Flow Cycle to be an important key to self mastery. Great video! Thank you.
I so need this book!!! When is this Shift coming out and where do I order? Here's some potential flow copy you can use to help promote and market this game changing masterpiece that will change the world. "When the Shift hits the fan, be prepared to be BLOW people / your customers away" "When you need to get your SHIFT together .. "Get Your Fricking Shift Together" I have more, but I'm suddenly out of flow 😔 Now do you see? I need to get my SHIFT together .. And without this book, I can't!! 😔 Thanks
Thanks for the breakdown! I really hope you'll touch upon the "getting started" part in your future videos. It really is THE ultimate struggle to start...
0. Avoidance - challenging yourself to do something productive (from no task to productive one) 1. Struggle - stress trying to push you away from the task (need to be experience and pass thru it) - Beta wave 2. Release - period of relaxation and comfort (subconscious take over from conscious effort) - Alpha wave 3. FLOW - increasing in creativity, focus and pattern recognition (release of dopamine, serotonin, endorphin, oxytocin ) - Theta wave 4. Recovery - active and passive (physical and mental exercises)
It's safe to say I'm obsessed. Though, I'm still unsure of the technique; lets take an example where I'm applying flow to studying: 1. Start studying 2. After approximately 30 minutes, engage in dopamine deficient exercises (staring at the wall) 3. Back to working in flow 4. Recovery is that right or did I mess up somewhere. Thank you, I would appreciate your help Rian.
I LOVE YOUR WORK Rian! Your message and videos are easily one of the most helpful ones EVER!!! I am aspiring business owner myself and it'd be an honour to meet you someday and collaborate with the Flow research collective! I share your videos with my friends and family regularly and will keep doing so in the future!! Thank you so much for making this priceless information so accessible for all! I hope your channel gets much more than millions of views that it undoubtedly deserves! P.S.: Absolutely love the editing and the visuals too!
HOLY SHMOLY, this is some serious gold! Wow, I was wondering why pairing up walking to and from the café and then sipping my cold brew right as I sat down for work, made it so much less of a struggle. Thank you so much for this!
Wonderful content. I would ask how one knows the difference between struggle caused by an ineffective method of learning and/or working, and struggle that is a genuine result of challenge. Certainly one needs to be on the lookout for the pain we get when we just don't approach things correctly.

the thing about i want to do with flow state is to do it like standing, maintaining balance is just in the back of my head, if i can do that then my stress can be fun
Fucking best youtube channel ever. Life changing. If I could only have seen 1 channel in my entire life, it’s this one. My brain finally makes sense now!!!
1 struggle - stress, u feel useless and don't stop it. 23mins takes to get into focus. 2 Release - boring break, 10 min 3 Flow - Mind takes over 4 Recovery - active break Before - Starting to struggle or avoiding never lets you into this cycle
@@hkjdfvabe5256my take/opinion of it is kind of clearing the brain of the struggle while not stimulating it doing something else, hence why you should partake in a “boring” activity.
We are not supposed to interrupt ourselves during the struggle phase as it resets the flow cycle, but that's exactly what the release phase is about: diverting your attention from the task at hand. How do we know when to go (or when we have gone) from the struggle phase to the release phase? Also, how is it that the Release phase, which is essentially an interruption from what you're doing, helps you attain Flow State, while any other interruption before the Release phase (during the Struggle phase) resets the flow cycle?
great video, I only watched one video and i subscribed. I totally get what you are talking about, this is exactly what I need in my life I am always working too many hours and struggle with fatigue and non-productive days - thanks so much for sharing, I will be using this every day from now on, this is a massive ha ha moment for me to move forward with more certainly in my daily workflow activities. thank you, thank you
From tommorow im doing somethings like After i wake i up i will delay any form of gratification and instead will struggle and do my chores after that i will have a 10 minute break and then after flow at night I'll have a warm shower .
Struggle stage is all about conscious, intentional effort. Release stage is about releasing the will-full effort and allowing your mind to naturally, subconsciously create new neural pathways that support the effort you just put in so that when you return to the task, it’s not as much of a struggle. Seems to me that these 2 stages are interchangeable until we reach a level of mastery upon which time flow-state becomes more accessible
After how long should recovery phase take place - After each block of productive time? Or at the end of the day? Also when should I take a 5-10 minute boring break - After how many minutes of struggle?
I think it depends on what you are doing, if it’s a small task you just did a 5-30 minute break is probably enough, but if it’s something that took you many hours your recovery should probably be at least a good night’s sleep, it also depends on what task you’re doing next. But I think it’s always after each block of productive time. And likewise, depending on how long and difficult your task is your struggle time will also vary accordingly
Wow, I thought you could just speed up your mind world to focus faster. I mean I can do this method but I'll try the one on the video's. As I rewatched the video, it's actually pretty much my strategy to focus, try to flow your mind. There are methods. 1) Start: You probably don't know how much you focus during your first try. It has significant focus boost as your *mind* is still *empty* on that information/task. 2) Forcible: Forcing the focus is definitely a bad idea as not only there's multiple reasons why such as losing some sanity, it also damages you. 3) Emptiness: The feeling of emptiness is not what you need in the state, it's the thoughts, to activate it. Though your brain still uses its unconscious state, it's still fine. 4) Adrenaline: Adrenaline has so much advantages, including the focus, to sum this up, it ignores what you don't need for significant physical boost. Disadvantage? It's your own physical state. 5) Health: You can also boost focus by being healthy, very simple with so many advantages. That's probably all of the focus types. These are not variations, you can stack all these and have even more focus than ever before. Just kidding. 6) Manipulation: Manipulate your mind to anything you like, *make thoughts about being that in all aspects.* The highlighted ones are very important. Third rewatch and noticed how similar it is to mine so I'll also put cycle using definitions above. 1) Health 2) Adrenaline 3) Emptiness 4) Start Why is 4th start? You can say that word is re-start or to start again and be better. And yes, gaming has gone further than sports.

I watch an obscene amount of YT and know when I see something amazing. So I want to congratulate you on this channel.
I don’t know if you have a full team behind this, but the video/audio editing, script, story telling, captivating approach to education, is incredible.
Well done, this channel is going to go crazy. If people didn’t know about Flow…. They will soon. Look forward to the next one!
I hope watching 'obscene' amount of YT is paying you in great ways in life and i hope you have an interesting life offline otherwise you are missing the whole point , bless ya!
@@blessedbells Thankyou blessedbells it sure does, I learn a lot - then I share it to the world through my platforms and put it into practise everyday.
I agree. I’ve went through a lot of the self help guys on here but Rian is different. I would say he is the Andrew Huberman for productivity
Wow Thank you.
This video helps me a lot, I was figured out struggle and release but i was unaware about other two flow and recovery, i was thinking "what am i missing it".Thx buddy you added value in my life❤
Flow is amazing, in dodgeball i was able to pull craziest looking dodges just thanks to it
this is by far the best video on this subject . quick , simple and efficent thanks a lot
Thank you for watching!
I didn't realise how much I needed this video thank you

Completely different take on what flow state is. What you explained is literally what I do whenever anything goes wrong. Can't sleep? Relax until I'm focused enough to stay awake to a point of no return. Also not sure if I would say flow is like a boulder rolling down a hill, because YOU are the boulder. It's just things are so seamless and easy to grasp.
Euuhh, this is the type of content i would actually literally pay banks to learn about and u guys doing it for free? U guys are legends!!
Thanks for watching.
@@riandoris Cannot not watch your videos! With pleasure!
Im a minute in and this has taught me more than school
wow. This video is interesting, I never saw struggle as the pathway to the flow state, always as an obstacle between it. You're right, the reason I struggle is because I am trying to go into the state, if i wasn't entering that zone, I wouldn't feel struggle/stress at all. Thankyou!!!
the best flow video on youtube tysm for ur vids sir
Quite exciting to see a human explaining how to flow like a god.
Thanks for the masterpiece.
Literally every single of the video is life changing
Thank you for watching!

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🌊 *Flow isn't an on-off switch; it's a cycle of four stages: struggle, release, flow, and recovery, key to consistent peak performance.*
01:09 🧘 *Physiological relaxation responses similar to meditation can be triggered by various activities, quieting the prefrontal cortex and fostering unique insights.*
02:15 🏄 *Extreme athletes experiencing "flow" demonstrate razor-sharp focus, leading to extraordinary physical feats, paving the way for understanding the flow cycle.*
03:40 ⚙️ *The struggle phase, the first step of the flow cycle, involves pushing limits, inducing stress, and battling the urge to quit-an essential precursor to achieving flow.*
05:31 🌬️ *Release, the second phase, offers a break from active engagement, allowing the subconscious to take over, crucial for triggering the relaxation response before entering flow.*
06:14 🚀 *Flow, the peak of the cycle, manifests as a rapid acceleration of focus and creativity, driven by a mix of neurochemicals, enhancing performance and pattern recognition.*
06:55 💤 *Recovery, the final stage, enables the body and mind to recuperate from the exertion of the Flow State, replenishing neurotransmitters and reducing accumulated stress.*
08:30 🌊 *Understanding the flow cycle allows intentional navigation through its stages, recognizing where one is and what's needed to enter flow repeatedly.*
09:56 🔄 *Initiating the struggle phase, the hardest part of the cycle, is crucial; avoidance stalls the cycle, while engagement sets the flow cycle in motion.*

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🌊 *Understanding the Flow Cycle*
- Flow is a cyclical process with four stages: Struggle, Release, Flow, and Recovery.
- Dr. Herbert Benson's research on the relaxation response and Stephen Cutler's study of extreme athletes contributed to mapping the flow cycle.
03:40 🏋️♂️ *Struggle Phase: Key Insights*
- Struggle is the first phase of the flow cycle, involving hard work and pushing cognitive and physical limits.
- Stress neurochemicals like norepinephrine and cortisol are released, creating a feeling of unsolvability, but interrupting this phase resets the cycle.
- Persisting through struggle is crucial, as it is a sign that you're on track for flow.
05:31 🧘♀️ *Release Phase: Techniques and Benefits*
- Release is the second phase, where stepping back allows the subconscious to take over.
- Brainwave patterns shift to alpha frequency, and Benson's relaxation response is triggered.
- Suggestions for release include taking a boring break, paying attention to surroundings, or engaging in simple activities.
06:14 🚀 *Flow State: Characteristics and Neurochemistry*
- Flow is the main event, characterized by razor-sharp focus and heightened creativity.
- The brain produces Theta wave patterns, and a cocktail of neurochemicals like dopamine and serotonin is released.
- Flow is a state of deep absorption and high pattern recognition, driving peak performance.
07:48 😴 *Recovery Phase: Importance and Techniques*
- Recovery is essential after the Flow State, allowing the body and mind to recuperate neurochemically.
- Active recovery methods such as ice baths, saunas, and quality sleep reduce allostatic load and boost resilience.
- The flow afterglow, a satisfying feeling of accomplishment, is experienced during recovery.
09:13 ⚙️ *Mastering the Flow Cycle*
- Starting the struggle phase is a challenge; it involves overcoming avoidance or engagement gaps.
- Engaging in the struggle is the hardest part to master, but once achieved, moving through the flow cycle becomes easier.
- Gracefully persisting through struggle, releasing rapidly, flowing deeply, and recovering aggressively are key aspects of mastering the flow cycle.

fun thing, a while ago when i would enter flow state, sometimes id realize that im in it and that would snap me right out of it, so i eventually learned how to realize im in flow state without interrupting it
very cool 👍
I've experienced flow state many times while playing badminton
I like to call it awakening

"When you need to get your SHIFT together ..

I need to get my SHIFT together ..
And without this book, I can't!! 😔

Thanks! That made me laugh out loud. Presale coming soon! @@quantumpotential7639
I’ve watched many videos on the topic of flow , this is the best explanation by far I’ve seen 👏👏👏
It’s crazy, as a gamer I’ve been using the flow cycle to be the best I can be at a game for yeeeaaarrrsss, and I’ve never noticed! :0 XD
I can relate but I think I do it wrong because I just zone out, but still have a pretty fast heart rate, so I needa improve.
You have to let things go to and sometimes you have to stay calm and when you're prayin you feel it too, I sometimes feel the flow too
Thanks for the breakdown! I really hope you'll touch upon the "getting started" part in your future videos. It really is THE ultimate struggle to start...
Thank you for watching!
0. Avoidance - challenging yourself to do something productive (from no task to productive one)
1. Struggle - stress trying to push you away from the task (need to be experience and pass thru it) - Beta wave
2. Release - period of relaxation and comfort (subconscious take over from conscious effort) - Alpha wave
3. FLOW - increasing in creativity, focus and pattern recognition (release of dopamine, serotonin, endorphin, oxytocin ) - Theta wave
4. Recovery - active and passive (physical and mental exercises)
So if i want to study smthg so how should i get in the flow state?
That was in front of me all the time but you made me recognize it. Thanks ❤
This is golden. Thank you so much sir!
It's safe to say I'm obsessed. Though, I'm still unsure of the technique; lets take an example where I'm applying flow to studying:
1. Start studying
2. After approximately 30 minutes, engage in dopamine deficient exercises (staring at the wall)
3. Back to working in flow
4. Recovery
is that right or did I mess up somewhere. Thank you, I would appreciate your help Rian.
I'm also unsure when should I move from struggle to release. and then from release to flow.
Thank you for sharing this

Most valuable and amazing and most informative video on flow.
I appreciate that!
Great video thank you God bless you all ❤
this video is invaluable. I wish i had watched this months ago.
Wonderful content. I would ask how one knows the difference between struggle caused by an ineffective method of learning and/or working, and struggle that is a genuine result of challenge. Certainly one needs to be on the lookout for the pain we get when we just don't approach things correctly.
Any challenge, the scalable or not is determined once you take a plunge into it

Detailed Summary for [How to Get Ahead of 99% People Using Flow State](ua-cam.com/video/bzW-zV4JhK4/v-deo.html) by [Merlin](merlin.foyer.work/)
[00:00](ua-cam.com/video/bzW-zV4JhK4/v-deo.html) Flow States are part of a four-stage cycle
- Flow States are not like a light switch, they are cyclical
- Understanding the flow cycle is key to accessing Flow States consistently
[01:19](ua-cam.com/video/bzW-zV4JhK4/v-deo.html) Meditators experience relaxation response, while extreme athletes achieve seemingly impossible feats.
- Meditation triggers the body's relaxation response.
- Triggers for the relaxation response include deep breathing, prayer, and showering.
- The relaxation response leads to unique brain connections and insights.
- Extreme athletes achieve record-breaking feats over time.
- Examples include Laird Hamilton riding 70 and 80-foot waves, Tony Hawk performing the first 900-degree aerial spin, and Tom Shar accomplishing a 1080-degree spin at age 12.
- Stephen Cutler identified the key pattern to achieve each physical feat.
[02:48](ua-cam.com/video/bzW-zV4JhK4/v-deo.html) The flow cycle can be used intentionally to drive oneself into the Zone every day with consistency.
- Struggle is the first phase of the flow cycle and involves hard work pushing cognitive and physical limits.
- Struggle is characterized by high stress, the release of norepinephrine and cortisol.
- Dopamine is released during struggle, which soothes our system and heightens pleasure.
- In this phase, our problems seem unsolvable.
[04:14](ua-cam.com/video/bzW-zV4JhK4/v-deo.html) Struggle phase is necessary to experience flow
- Interrupting the struggle phase resets the cycle
- It takes up to 23 minutes to regain focus after interruption
- Many people spend their careers without experiencing flow
- Persisting through the struggle leads to the reward of flow
- Linking struggle to the reward of flow makes it easier
[05:34](ua-cam.com/video/bzW-zV4JhK4/v-deo.html) Flow State: The process of achieving optimal performance and creativity.
- The brainwave patterns shift from beta wave frequency to alpha wave frequency.
- The Flow State is characterized by increased creativity, insight, focus, and endurance.
- The release of neurochemicals like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins further amplify these effects.
- After the Flow State, recovery is needed for the body and mind to recuperate.
[06:52](ua-cam.com/video/bzW-zV4JhK4/v-deo.html) Flow State clears allostatic load and promotes recovery
- Flow State expands neurotransmitters
- Recovery is essential for memory consolidation
- Active recovery is important for brain and physiology
- Active recovery reduces allostatic load
- Flow Afterglow brings a sense of satisfying fatigue
- The neurochemistry of flow lasts for an extended period
- The flow afterglow promotes a parasympathetic state
- A parasympathetic state leads to calm and deep sleep
- Deep sleep clears metabolic waste from the brain through the glymphatic system
[08:17](ua-cam.com/video/bzW-zV4JhK4/v-deo.html) Flow cycle helps in achieving productivity
- Experiencing flow increases the desire for it and pushes oneself to reach new levels of productivity
- Understanding the flow cycle helps to know where to go next to get into flow again and again
- Starting to struggle in the first place is a challenge that occurs before the flow cycle begins
[09:35](ua-cam.com/video/bzW-zV4JhK4/v-deo.html) Engaging in the struggle is the hardest part of the flow cycle to master.
- The process of struggle begins and you're on your path to release into flow.
- If you avoid the struggle, you'll never get into flow in the first place.
- Once you master the struggle, moving through the rest of the cycle becomes easier.
- You can struggle gracefully, persisting through the discomfort, knowing that flow will be on the other side of release.
- Releasing rapidly by dislodging your attention allows effortless subconscious information processing to take over.
- To flow deeply, block distractions, maintain impulse control, and ensure not to squander the deep state of flow you're in.
- Recover aggressively by clearing allostatic load from your system rapidly.
- By watching the video 'Caffeine Mastery' you can make it easier to engage in the flow cycle and shorten the struggle phase.
Precious insights, thank you so much! 🔥 I just wondered if the flow state is the same as what athletes call "second wind"?
the thing about i want to do with flow state is to do it like standing, maintaining balance is just in the back of my head, if i can do that then my stress can be fun

happy i’m here so early. This channel is going to rocket 🚀
Thank you for watching!
Fucking best youtube channel ever. Life changing. If I could only have seen 1 channel in my entire life, it’s this one. My brain finally makes sense now!!!
Being a trickster to your brain is like for example you are being comparative about your different situations to focus more stress deduction.
1 struggle - stress, u feel useless and don't stop it. 23mins takes to get into focus.
2 Release - boring break, 10 min
3 Flow - Mind takes over
4 Recovery - active break
Before - Starting to struggle or avoiding never lets you into this cycle
Could you please explain why I have to "release" after getting into a state of focus? Wont that just disrupt it?
Been loving your channel!! Thank you so much for these vids!! Keep it up :) Leon Hendrix just... with new vids lol

great video, I only watched one video and i subscribed.

Amazing video... I learned a lot.. thank you!
thank you bro love your videos
im watching this in class while the teacher is yapping about some frigin bridges my concentration is on my max
I am doing the same i have ADHD so this video is useless to me
outstanding video
From tommorow im doing somethings like
After i wake i up i will delay any form of gratification and instead will struggle and do my chores after that i will have a 10 minute break and then after flow at night I'll have a warm shower .
I dint understand release part
✨F✨A✨N✨T✨A✨S✨T✨I✨C✨ great video. Awesome information👌🏻 Cheers iSPIKE (Western Australia 🇦🇺) 👍🏻

Soo... Finally found out why I can formulate a business plan to get rich while showering...
6) Manipulation: Manipulate your mind to anything you like, *make thoughts about being that in all aspects.*
The highlighted ones are very important.
Third rewatch and noticed how similar it is to mine so I'll also put cycle using definitions above.
1) Health
2) Adrenaline
3) Emptiness
4) Start
Why is 4th start? You can say that word is re-start or to start again and be better.
And yes, gaming has gone further than sports.
Worth it 👌 thanks.
