  • I've made these four Rhapsody blouses from Love Notions.
And failed at a Simplicity wrap dress pattern ...
I'm size 18-20, kind of apple shaped and not really very expert at sewing. But I love to have a go :)

My favorite of the Rhapsodies is the olive green background floral.

I love all of the tops. The dark one is probably a little longer bc it is heavier than chiffon or voile. I like both prints and solids.

Simplicity patterns tend to have a lot of ease in my opinion. So grading up smaller sizes may get complicated. They're a lot of good recommendations from your viewers on this comment thread. I love the other tops. The blue looks very classy. The first floral might be able to use some kind of light delicate trimming where you extended the sleeves. Maybe that would make it look like you meant to do that. When you first stepped back and prior to discussing sleeves, I found myself in love with how it looks on you. I think it's beautifully fits you.

Aww thank you. It is a great pattern as it skims over the bumps and lumps and is cool. I like the idea of a trim - just got to see if it is better as a summer blouse - though I made a lot of blouses last summer :)

Yes the navy shirt looks beautiful and looks longer. I had that rhapsody that did that stretched vertically. It was crinkle rayon. The second top I made out of that’s same type of material I stay stitched all curves before starting with much better results. New to your channel. Love you honesty

LOL - I gravitate towards solids, especially black, because that's the easiest. It's so many things - I don't like mornings and especially don't like to make decisions at that time, I don't like clothes in general, I just have so many more things to do that are so much more fun than making choices about getting dressed. Your Rhapsody tops are all lovely, I like the brightly colored "boho" one the best on you, but the dark solid is also wonderful. Glad you're feeling better!

So true about mornings - I am not interested in picking out outfits then, although I do rather like to play with clothes if I allocate time for it. Thanks for watching and wishing me well :)

Love the rhapsody tops!- Well done!
They are very flattering! I personally don't like the wrap patterns either because I can never get them to fit on my body.

I love the darker colours on you. I have found out after experimenting with fabrics and patterns for a bit that I came to the same conclusion ... I am most comfortable in darker colours and or florals with a dark background ... if that’s what you find you like you are probably right ... go with the flow .... love your makes ... this one is on my list too. Thanks!

Yes, mostly I like to wear darker colours on my chunkiest parts - but a well cut pattern can look good in any fabric!

Hi Deb, welcome back. Love your Rhapsodie blouses as well. As for patterns vs. Solids I think it depends on your personality. I've always been more of a solids person. Even as a kid. Any prints I wear are either a more conservative stripe, polka dot, or a structured geometric print. My personality wears this with confidence. If I ever try to wear floral prints, I don't feel right. My personality can not carry it off. I feel uncomfortable, look insecure .. it just doesn't work. I don't try to analyze it .. I just wear what works. Love you in Navy and also the blue print with red piping.

I tend to go for solids, too, especially in tops. (I find them less distracting. (Oh! and I enjoy having the ability to mix-and-match, especially when traveling.)) I like variety in my dress fabrics, though, so go figure!

Hi Deb, so glad to see you. All your blouses look fantastic on you with the exception of the wrap blouse. You might find a wrap blouse that has a cup size and it might fit better. Also I were a lot of solid colors with the exception of a print in a skirt away from my face. I feel very comfortable in that and it's who I am and I celebrate that. Very rarely do I put a print around my face but I do occasionally and even then it's a soft print. You inspire many people

    • @SlapHappyRetirement

Yes I haven't ever been that intentional about patterns/prints but I think as you've understood that when you know what you will actually wear and feel good in (rather than what looks nice on the roll) you get more value out of your effort. Thanks for your encouragement!

I’m just like you, have a wardrobe full of patterns but nearly always choose the plains.love that navy one on you. I’ve only made one Rhapsody blouse so far but I do love the pattern. You look great in all of the Rhapsody tops.x

Lovely to see you back - you're looking fab! Love all your rhapsodies but especially the navy one. I find I pull plains from my wardrobe more than patterns...especially darker colours...and navy's and blues feature very heavily in my wardrobe and in my stash. The latter pointed out to me by Sïan (KB)...which I hadn't really been aware of until she said! I'm sure it's a result of years of conditioning that darker colours are supposed to be slimming! I do wear patterned dresses in summer but if you don't have to match to anything it makes life easy. I'm still trying to figure my colour season (which I think it's cool summer) in an effort to identify those colours that flatter most.

    • @SlapHappyRetirement
      @SlapHappyRetirement  4 роки тому +1

Yes, I guess we need to try both the plainer/darker and the lighter/bigger patterns. Patterned dresses in summer - they are on my list! You should do a video on your colour questions :)

    Hi Deb,
I like all the Rhapsody blouses I love that pattern. I tend not to sew up plain fabrics because it means your sewing has to be perfect. You can hide a whole lot of mistakes in a patterned fabric. Maybe try a knit wrap dress they tend to hug curves better.

Yeah.... let that particular wrap dress go, it's not a great style.....
Absolutely LOVE your symphony of Rhapsodies!!! They all look fabulous on you! I think #1 will look nice with short sleeves, if the current ones bug you.
    You're looking good!

  • @katehamilton2914

Hi Deb - solids are fabulous and it's brave and wonderful to wear them because they let you shine! So embrace what your gut is telling you about what you feel good in, and say boo to whatever voice is telling you there's something wrong with it. BOO!! (I also love patterns in theory but in practice either don't wear them at all or get bored of them v. quickly - feels like they're wearing me rather than me wearing them, if that makes sense).
Having said all that I do think your patterned floaty rhapsodies look lovely - esp that first one - so enjoy wafting through the springtime in them :-)

Hi Deb, I think the Rhapsody Blouses looked very good on you especially the first one and the navy one. And as for solids vs prints, I tend to think a solid color blouse looks more polished and a bit dressier than a print. But I find I'm usually drawn to prints and usually don't like solids on me! Thanks for sharing the things you sew that don't quite work. Good to know I'm not the only one who has some trouble with a pattern from time to time!

Yes I feel that all the sewing vloggers are better at it than me, but the only way to learn is to have a go and it isn't just the sewing, its the trying of different shapes and styles that I could never buy in RTW. Thanks for watching

Hi Debs. Love the Rhapsody and you have inspired me to get the pattern out and have a go. With regard to the wrap I agree with all the other comments - let it go. A pity I liked the material. Great to see you back Deb, as a plus-size myself I find it difficult sometimes to visualize a pattern. The Rhapsody looks great on you and so do the print fabric. I think as plus-sizes we tend to shy away from a print. We always have success and fails and have to look at them as learning experiences. Look forward to seeing you next time.

Hi Deb - hope your back is better now and you are trouble free! It’s good to see you back 😁I really like your Rhapsody’s particularly the navy one. I always tend to make plain bottoms and patterned tops as I am a pear shape, they tend to suit me better, minimising my hips 😳😳! I think it’s been mentioned below about the Willow Wrap fromLove Notions - good time to buy with their 40% sale! 👍😁

Hi Lynne. Yes I think a plain dark top and lighter/more patterned trousers can be a good look for me as I'm mostly boobs and tummy. I love pear shaped bodies, they are SO feminine. :)

  • @jojackson2763

Hi Deb nice to see you back. Love the tops and I loved the navy short sleeve one which I think you look happiest in! But they all look great. I have bit of a tummy and have to admit I made a wrap dress which needed a snap at the chest to stop gaping and the waist did not flatter defining by the dress as there wasn't much contrast!!! 😂😂 so I lopped the skirt off and made it into a top which suited me better. I have a tendency to be inspired by people half my age and size but have learnt the hard way that you have to recognise what suits your shape maybe take ideas .... but go with what you like and would like to sew... the proof of course comes hidden, .... I have quite a few garments that I have made but just not worn, left languishing in my wardrobe, so obviously I am not admitting to myself that I don't like the garment or don't feel comfortable wearing it. So I have now given them away to happy recipients, lesson learnt. But you always look great and have now inspired me to make some big pants!!! 😂😂😁

It's no wonder you've made so many Rhapsody's - they look fantastic on you! As for the Simplicity, I don't think it's the pattern as much as it's just wrap tops and dresses. I have a McCall's Laura Ashley wrap dress/top pattern that was also a fail, and I just made another wrap dress for my daughter that may be a fail (she hasn't tried it on yet). Seems that if you have any kind of a bust, wraps are just never going to work unless you're some kind of fit genius. Maybe that's me - but I'm not even that busty (about a C/D cup) and I can never get them right. User error? General body shape? Who knows? I do know I am very weary of having to put a snap at the top just to hold it closed. I just avoid them in general if I can. It's definitely not you!

    • @SlapHappyRetirement
      @SlapHappyRetirement  4 роки тому

Yes I think you have hit the nail on the head. I'm so glad that it isn't only me that is having wrap issues. Maybe a faux wrap is the answer? Who knows. We shall keep moving on, eh?

I don't know if I've said before but I really like the Rhapsody tops,, I want to buy the pattern but like you I'm frugal and won't buy it unless it's the feature Friday. By the time I started learning about their patterns if it had been the $5.00 one I guess I missed it so hoping it comes around again. Your makes make me want it even more. You said in one of your previous vlogs that your machine didn't like the slippery fabrics but you don't say anything about having problems with the chiffon and that? I'm getting ready to make my first chiffon or georgette blouse and would like to know. Thanks Deb, just love watching you.
