I observed mostly asians in the audience and very few westerners. Either the westerners think it is not worth listening to George or they are not interested in what George was going to share or they thought they already knew what George was going to say. The westerners are the ones who most need to hear what George has to say. George is one of very few scholars and think tanks in the world today who understand China and has tremendous insights into China, I congratulate the few westerners who were present at the event and feel sorry for all those westerners who had the opportunity but miss this event at Cambridge.

@@papichoku2442 Mr Yeo is an example of Singaporean of the LKY generation. A Singaporean educated in the west.
The difference today is a new generation of westernized Singaporean that has forgotten they are Singaporean, sprouting western ideals and ideology. Unfortunately there is no such as a global identity, western media sells the virtues of a global world and human rights but acts completely differently in a crunch. Everyone and every country acts in their own interest, often by manipulating others to achieve their goals.
Mr Yeo is just pointing that out to a bunch naive debutantes in the Q&A

I only recently became acquainted with George Yeo and have been deriving a great deal of pleasure and insight at his astute study and observations. I sincerely hope his way of thinking continues to spread, as it is in the interest of greater peace and cooperation in the world.
My only only complaint is that I wish he had spoken at greater length about the tragedies befalling the Palestinian people at the hands of the entity committing such atrocities against them. I understand his reticence, but his approach of understanding, peace, and coexistence as applied in Singapore *must* prevail in Palestine as we seek a one state solution that reflects and embraces the rights of all who live on that land to live in peace and dignity.

From the Q&A and the host's questions and speech, it shows a growing isolation from the region and captured by western ideals and ideology.
Singapore is likely to be alienated from its neighbors and its region in the future. The host mentions the Malaysian Singaporean association but discards the Malaysian part almost immediately after. Singaporeans often forgets that Malaysian and Singaporean are the same culturally and genetically, many Executives and Engineers working in Singapore were or are Malaysian.
The Singaporeans in the audience appears to share little in common with Mr Yeo.

Hello, host here. I do think that it is natural that, as students studying abroad, we are exposed to Western ideals and ideology, and that might affect the way that we think.
Nonetheless, I do think that we still maintain our core Singaporean identity and it is for those reasons that we saw value in hosting and attending this talk.
While some of the questions (mine included, I presume) included a premise which did not agree with Mr Yeo, it also does not necessarily mean that we 100% stand by them. I personally stand by the importance of raising those perspectives to understand how someone like Mr Yeo would respond to them, even if I did not fully agree with them, so that people in the audience could derive a more nuanced conclusion on their own after listening.
Pertaining to the Malaysia and Singapore Association, I agree with your point and do think that Malaysians and Singaporeans still have very close relations in Cambridge, as is the case in many places abroad. Due to the sheer number of Malaysians and Singaporeans, however, there are separately established associations for both Malaysians and Singapore in Cambridge. Our society is called the 'Malaysian and Singaporean Association' due to our historical legacy but primarily serves Singaporeans. For those reasons, I opted to only refer to 'Singaporeans' during my remarks.
      Thank you!

      @olderchin1558 Місяць тому

@@limzhengwei4018 Thank you for taking the time to response. You and your Uni mates are not alone in being captured by western narrative.
What Mr Yeo pointed out in his response is something really important for future leaders of Singapore. Don't believe all the BS you are exposed to. Seek multiple view and apply the BS filter.
I think western rhetorics about destroying Russian economy and banning Russia gas was so obviously a dumb idea but it took 2 years of news progression to come to the same conclusion, someone with a modicum of economic knowledge would know the outcome from the start. US redefinition of recession and the constant correction of its employment data has go to make one question their honesty. The many psych ops exposed by their own news channels has got to raise question about everything they say.
Unfortunately even CNA is trooping along with the west. A little independent research and thinking would see through the BS. Fortunately the Singapore government does not make their decision based on CNA narratives.
The first thing I was taught when I did my MBA in Bath was critical thinking. Evaluate the fact, not just the opinions. Read widely on all subjects and deeply on critical ones. Media has a tendency to distort or omit, not necessarily lie outright.

George Yeo should leave his walking & speaking for now.
Singapore is in such a dilemma, a mess really - father vs. son; father left then brother vs. brother; sister vs. brother; brother vs. d-in-l; daughter left and now brother vs. brother and d-in-l. As if not enough, 2 outsiders took son to court - the son of a founding father, adding insult to injury. Grandson taken to court and fined. The fate of the founding father's will and house to be decided by people outside the family. Truly the Romance of the Three Lee Generations!
Yeo should come back to lead - provide a steady hand with some honest moral support and analytical thinking. The political system in Singapore is now far from democratic - from the president to the government and grassroots organization, it is dominated by the PAP. Where are the checks and balances ?

    Key Points:
    Southeast Asia's Unique Character:
Southeast Asia is incredibly diverse with 650 million people across 10 countries
The region's complexity stems from its geography, with mountains, valleys, and islands creating natural divisions
No great empire has ever emerged from Southeast Asia; instead, it has historically been influenced by alternating cycles of Chinese and Indian power
    China's Nature and Rise:
China is uniquely homogeneous (92-93% Han) despite its large population
Unlike Western imperial powers, China historically prefers to organize and manage its own people rather than conquer others
China's economy has grown dramatically since joining WTO in 2001, leading to current US-China tensions
Yeo argues that China shouldn't be viewed as a traditional hegemon like past Western powers
    Singapore's Role and Identity:
Singapore exists to serve others and makes its living by being useful to the global network
The country reflects the diversity of its trading partners through its population
Singapore needs to maintain unity while embracing diversity
Singaporeans need to "leave the well" (gain international experience) while maintaining connection to their roots
    ASEAN's Approach:
Unlike European institutions, ASEAN never votes on decisions
ASEAN's seeming weakness (inability to make quick decisions) is actually its strength
Acts as a buffer between great powers and helps stabilize the region
Practices gradual problem-solving rather than confrontational approaches
    Current Geopolitical Issues:
Discussed Belt and Road Initiative, arguing it's a natural outcome of China's market growth rather than a "debt trap"
Addressed the Gaza conflict and its impact on Singapore-Israel relations
Emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in Southeast Asia for continued development
    Media and Information:
Acknowledged that complete censorship is impossible but argued that mainstream media still influences public opinion
Suggested that all media outlets have biases and agendas
Advocated for accessing multiple information sources to form balanced views
The overall theme of Yeo's speech emphasized the importance of understanding historical and cultural context in international relations, particularly in Asia, and the need for flexibility and diplomatic finesse in managing relationships between great powers and smaller nations.

I wonder why Chinese people who say such things seem to be blind to the history of expansion and conquest of ancient Chinese dynasties?

    • @robintan502
      @robintan502 Місяць тому +2

Care to highlight which part of history where there were expansion and conquest of ancient Chinese dynasties? What George mentioned is largely reflected in most of Chinese dynasties. Wars started outside China proper by ancient Chinese dynasties were curious exceptions, not the norm. There were expansionist dynasties , but the Yuan and the Qing dynasties were times when China proper itself were conquered and ruled over by foreign powers. These foreign powers initiated the conquest of Tibet, Yunnan, and attempted conquests of places such as Vietnam, Japan and even as far as Sumatra (Majapahit - modern Indonesia). Even the other curious examples such as excursions into Vietnam or Korea or Burma, such as the Vietnamese, Burmese and Korean expeditions, history records them as wars of intervention supporting succession fights between local royal families , not conquest. These neighboring countries usually have tributary relationships with imperial China where the Imperial Court have suzerainty arrangement with a local king, so many of such rarer foreign military actions starts out as a request by the local king against a local usurper. Fun fact, there was a time in a long and early Vietnamese history that dynasty established there was by an ethnic Chinese military general who originated from China.

I enjoy learning new things. I like to hear people from different parts of the world speak. I also like to hear different perspectives from different people. But we must deal with reality. Somethings make sense and should be considered. Somethings are fantasy and made up. We cannot learn anything from nonsense. We cannot extrapolate from a basis of distortions, exaggerations, or outright lies because they are groundless.
Mr. George Yeo claims that Communist China (not China) has grown 7 times or 11 times. 7 time or 11 times of what? Can Mr. Yeo clearly define what he talking about? Does this make any sense? When a society truly progress from agrarianism (agricultural society) to a modern industrialized civilization then the standard of living of its people rise. Communist China is a totalitarian state. The largest and most profitable companies in totalitarian China are started by foreign companies (from democratic republican countries with free-market capitalism). The totalitarian Chinese dictators own joint-ventures with these companies. Without these foreign companies the totalitarian Chinese government can do nothing. The totalitarian Chinese dictators are the former Chinese Communists who control Chinese society with absolute power. The current Chinese totalitarian government have betrayed Sun Zhongshan's revolution to overthrow the absolute power the Qing Emperor. The current Chinese totalitarian government in Beijing is the reincarnation of the Imperial Qing government. Such a government cannot create a "free-market" capitalist trading system. What China has is a "command economy" or a command capitalist trading system where the Chinese Communist Party leaders own everything. Such states do not truly prosper.
This is the problem with Mr. George Yeo. Does he know what he talking about? Or is Mr. Yeo an actor pretending to be the "freely elected" political leader of an Asian city-state that is suppose to be democratic and republican. Is Mr. George Yeo another professional impersonator and comedian who is pretending to a legitimate leader of a modern state. He would not be the first imposter. The Russian Federation also has a professional impersonator and comedian, Vladimir Putin, who pretends to be Russia's political leader. Mr. Yeo claims that Communist China has become too big and too powerful. They threaten US dominance in the world. China along with India has had the largest the population in the world for at least 2500 years. The size of China has nothing to do with the current totalitarian Chinese government. The current totalitarian Chinese government possess outdated weapons from the former Soviet Union. The developed countries of Wester Europe and the US will not sell modern industrial weapons to the current totalitarian Chinese government. The former Soviet Union or Russia will only sell outdated, obsolete weapons to totalitarian China to make money. Totalitarian China cannot make modern, industrialized weapons. Therefore the Chinese Army of the current totalitarian Chinese government uses second-hand, obsolete weapons from the former Soviet Union. They can only attack and kill unarmed Beijing University students and Beijing citizens when they demand democracy. Mr. Yeo presents distortions, exaggerations, and lies about the totalitarian Chinese state.
If totalitarian China is developed and powerful then why does Singapore buy and operate US-made fighter jets, attack helicopters, and warships. What Singapore buys proves that the Singaporean government really thinks. It is in Singapore's interest to ally itself the US and buy US-made weapons. Does Mr. Yeo know what he talking about? Or is he just another impersonator and professional comedian pretending to be a politician and world leader? Is Mr. George Yeo the Prime Minister of Singapore or Bozo the Clown.
