This is an awesome video. I have two 873s and love them. I wish more videos like this were available a few years ago when I was looking to buy my first NRX. Your rod review videos are some of the best on UA-cam. Keep it up man!
NRXs are something people impulse buy without really knowing the history and what's in the components. I've had to learn all this stuff on my own. Hopefully this helps future shoppers.
@@PunchFishing definitely. I think you nailed this particular review too. 873 is the odd ball of the NRX lineup. More stout than the other two 3 powers and I even think it's heavier than the 854.

You make some of the best fishing reviews, thanks! I have an 853C and an 873CRR on backorder. I'm starting to think I would be better off with an 852C, the 853C is stiffer than what I expected, I have zero issues throwing full 1/2oz jigs on it, wouldn't want it any stiffer or heavier.
You are exactly right! I bought the 873 for $375 new from a mom and pop shop, sold it for $350....I have two other NRX that are the older green ones that have the 3M resin..... I think the new Rods have a different resin and are a hair heavier. Great Video 👍
Really liking the reviews man. I just picked up the 7’6mh Expride. I wanted the 7’2 but it was still on backorder. I would love to get my hands on an NRX one day.
Used ones are not that much more than a new Expride. However arguments could be made for the Exprides having more value.

Hey a Brian, I had to watch this video again! Good stuff Dude... we could hang and talk about gear and these rods for hours! Blows me away that cheeseball fishing videos have like 400k views done by people who know very little about what they are reviewing yet high end videos get much fewer?? Oh well, never ceases to amaze. I will just keep re-watching...HaHa....
I have a few older Cumara rods (Shimano series w 100mg Core reels) setups they are the only other combos that rival the G Loomis NRX in weight. Feathery light...and still have backbone...one of the main reasons I like the G Loomis NRX series so much.
As much as I love my Megabass gear, it’s a joy to pick up these super light combos.

Great video. Guess I'm going to have to use mine now... I've had it for about 5 years and it ends up staying behind on all my fishing trips. I do have a bunch of other NRX's for fishing jigs/texas, etc. for Smallies, which is probably why it stays at home. I'm not a big buzzbait guy but I'll start out with that. Thanks for the video!
Man, I fish smallies a lot and the 873 is a pleasure to use for dragging football jigs & swing heads. I crushed smallies this last fall dragging a 1/2oz swing head and a 3" craw plastic on the 873.
This is probably the best video I have seen in a long time the guide problem is the reason I don't own a nrx it's the first thing I noticed no way in hell will I pay too dollar for shit like that thanks lovely video 👍

Love your videos - you turned me onto megabass with a more personal review (( destroyers )) bought a couple and just fell in love . ... I’ve always been on the fence with an NRX - for $550 I’d like to have megabass eye candy .. sorry but NRX still looks so vanilla . Still on

Thanks again. NRXs are quite vanilla but sorta "cool" because of their low key aesthetic. If you want the best no-frills bottom contact rods, it's difficult to think of anything better. However if you want that WOW factor, you have to go Japanese.
I almost started with the 873, but I got the 894, but think I should have gotten an 893 because I couldn't get the 843mbr, so I need to get them all.
I fish the 854C. Its awesome. Definitely looking at an 873.
I stumbled on your channel today. Awesome detail in your review - I'm surprised you don't have 1000s of subs. And yes, I am now a new subscriber. I recently updated lots of my gear to high end stuff. I debated the NRX (before seeing your review) but went with a Conquest 842S (paired w/ Daiwa Certate LT) and the new Poison Adrena 7-2H (paired w/ scropion DC). Can't wait to get out on the water! Any thoughts on any of that gear? I think you have the same Conquest. Thank you for your review and comments.

GLoomis makes the IMX-Pro in 853C,873C, 893C which are all 3 power but 7’1”. 7’3” 7’5” all MH they also make a Limited Edition the 863C which is a 7’2” MH extra fast tip, so,you always have to check for a fast or extra fast tip.🤷🏻♂️ it is confusing and took me a couple of years to figure out their code, and I still have a few original Loomis rods before Shimano and my favorite old school is the 813C my spinnerbait Rod 6’9” MH

Love the Recoils on certain rods. I have a old 7’6 St Croix Legend xtreme with them and it’s better than the current model by far. They just seem to transmit more to me.
In that factory tour they did with Jared Lintner way back when it was explained that the guide wrapping is actually done in a cottage industry fashion, they ship the blanks to peoples homes and they wrap them up in their living room or whatever lol.
So that's the same thing St Croix does.. which is unfortunate. The quality is never that good.
@@PunchFishing So true. Yet these USA workers (likely women) get paid a hundred times more than the poor Chinese workers in communist China. Amazing the huge mark-up on Megabass, Favorite, Dobyns, Daiwa, and just about 99% of all the other brands sold. American rods= less quality in appearance but superior warranty, customer service, pride of owning a USA product.
It doesn’t matter what NRX you get. The NRX is what all other rod companies out there would like to be. I have the 873 it’s an amazing rod! Paired with a Bantam
Maybe American companies. But japanese companies and their quality are on another level.
Great video! I'm coming into the bass fishing world after 20 years of exclusively fly fishing, so I have maybe a little different relationship with Loomis and the NRX (massively popular in the fly world). Both Loomis and Hardy are using recoil guides in their current fly rods and they are (in my opinion) at the top the game in fly rod design these days. These guides are still somewhat polarizing in the fly fishing world, but in no way are they considered dated.
Speaking of fly rods... Loomis just replaced the NRX series of fly rods with the new NRX+. The difference in the newer generation is the use of a newer resin, which, on their fly rods, is resulting in a 15% weight reduction and quicker recovery. I own a couple of these rods and they are without a doubt improvements over the previous generation. That being said, I'm curious if Loomis will apply this new technology in refreshing their NRX conventional rods.
Thanks, good post! Id consider recoil guides to be quite unpopular in the bass world, NRX is the only line that stills offers them to the mass market (that I know about). I love the perspective from a fly angler though.
Recoil guides are not as popular in bass fishing mostly due to the common use of braid and fishing in slop with braid. Braid with particles rubbing on recoil guides is not a good thing and is not something flyfisherman see a lot of.

@@PunchFishing If you're good at using minimal brakes while casting with side to side spool play then you are likely getting about the same distance as you might get with DC reels. And the non-DC reels are certainly much lighter(especially your metanium's and most other high end reels). For example, the metanium MGL will beat the metanium DC in max distance casting unless you're casting heavier lures, which is where the DC shines best.

Hey man awesome video, I know this is years after this came out, but… I’m shopping for a Carolina rig rod and was wondering if you think this is one of the better ones, or is there a better option now?
At our tackle shop I’ve changed out so many sets of those recoil guides to titanium SiC. One advantage I’ve noticed to them though is sliding them into rod locker tubes. They don’t deform permanently, but they’re gross, I’m not a fan.
What do you charge to change out recoil to SIC? Just curious.

Hello i need a rod to replace my 893c NRX. I was taking a look at the new nrx+873c crr or the daiwa steez bc2. Which one do you think is better between these two? I can get it for around same price.
What are some names of these mom and pops that sell nrx at those prices ? I’m in NH and we don’t have and tackle shops here.
Have the 7’2” MH Expride coming but I’m already thinking about returning and getting an NRX. I’m looking for as much versatility as I can get, not getting a whole line-up, though I’m getting most of my bites dragging jigs, Texas rigs and occasionally spinners and chatterbaits. The 7'2 MH expride is ridiculously versatile. You won't be disappointed using it for any of the techniques you described.
Or the Megabass Destroyer Addermine. Stuck in between all those. Also thinking of my first non shimano spinning reel such as Tatula Lt which I know you use

Do you own a Conquest? Would love to see a video with this amount of detail about a Conquest. I bought a Kistler Z-bone in 2019 because the NRX was so out-dated...keep doing great vids 👍
Yea I have a 842S conquest that I'm still testing out. I'll drop a review later. Even though NRXs are "outdated" they are still fantastic rods for bottom contact.
I just retired and plan on bass fishing more especially when I head south for the winter. I stopped at a large tackle shop to see what they had in stock. I own 3 G Loomis fly rods that cost just under $3000 but never owned any of their bass rods. The 3 employees and a couple of customers that I talked to said that loomis nrx rods were the best bass rods you can buy so I headed to the g Loomis rack and started looking. I asked the employee were the cranking rods are and he looked at me and said Loomis doesn't make cranking rods. I told him that I do a lot of off shore fishing and that I currently use an 8 ft heavy powell max for Carolina rigging, football jigs, and A-rigging what does Loomis have in 8 ft rods? He looked at me and said Loomis doesn't make 8 ft rods but they have a 7'6" X Heavy that's rated for1 oz lures but doesn't recommend using anything that heavy. So basically the best bass rod maker doesn't make cranking rods, doesn't make a rod longer than 7'6", and can only handle lure less than an ounce..
Loomis does make Cranking rods, but they are in the IMX series.
Another great rod that is very similar to this is the Edge black widow 735...
The edge is an mbr blank and you can get the rod directly from edge for around $265....
@@juiceman33 Edge are great rods and IMO are way ahead of G Loomis since Gary left G Loomis they have not changed much to keep up with the times and are kinda relying on the brand . Misaligned guide chains are one thing lots are not even built on the spline.
If you were to throw braid to leader on the 873 crr what would you recommend? I usually throw 40 lb. maxcuatro to 12 lb. mono or flouro for my t-rigs with a blood knot. Is this too much to get through the guides?
That should be fine, you'll just have to get used to the 'noise' of the knot going through the recoil guides. They can thump a little bit. You may want to learn the FG knot as it seems to go through recoil guides better than others.

Again still researching a high end finesse rod. Outside of my Poison Adrena and Expride spinning? What would you recommend and why? All around finesse rod apps. Thank you

I have the Expride 7'2" med/heavy, looking to add a dedicated jig rod, and swim bait rod. Thinking G. Loomis NRX Casting Rod Blue 7'1" Heavy 854C JWR. Would like to hear your opinion.
The 854c would be VERY stiff. I wouldn't use that for any moving baits, like a swim bait. The 3 powers have a little more bend, some people use 853s for swim jigs and spinnerbaits. The 854c is a stout rod that's best used for 1/2-3/4oz jigs and bottom contact.

Ended up with the 873. Fantastic rod for dragging jigs. Definitely Medium/Heavy plus. Perfect fit for what I was trying to accomplish. Thanks for the info/review.

Hey buddy that’s a good review I have an 853c JWR and today it broke in half bc last week I lightly rolled it up into the window of my truck it’s the only NRX I’ve ever had and I love it I use it for only Texas rig do you think it’s the best for that or that ccr in this vid is better? It broke today even though I’ve been using for a week bc I’ve been using a plastic craw with 3/16 worm weight so today when I tied on a jackhammer 3/8 when I loaded it the rod just snapped where I had rolled it up even though I couldn’t find where I had damaged it or feel it right after I rolled it up so I wonder will G loomis help me out ya think. Or will the inspect it and find that It wasn’t due to bad craftsmanship? Thanks a lot for the vid and any help if I gotta buy a new one I will if I can find one that was the only NRX green top had in Richmond I live in Newport News Va.
Loomis will replace it but for a fee. Sadly you'll be waiting several months for a replacement. Loomis is way behind.

Can you do a comparison video of the nrx873crr and the Daiwa steeze bottom contact 2!?!? I already have the 873crr and use it for dragging football jigs. Works good. I’m thinking of picking up the steeze bottom contact 2 to try out though. I usually am fishing deep clear lakes here in northern Cali. Usually atleast dragging jigs in 25ft of water minimum. Wondering how the steeze bc2 would be in these situations!? Any input ? Thanks great videos btw
I've done a few videos on the Steez BC2, it's a fantastic deep water rod. I use it for deep Carolina rigging a lot. It makes LONG casts and it's quite sensitive.
Thanks. I actually just picked up the steeze bc2 and it’s very nice. I haven’t had time to fish it yet but It def feels a bit stiffer and more powerful then the 873crr.
Great video, I watched the whole thing without skipping. Excuse my ignorance, but why not just upgrade the guides on the NRX? I currently own a Dobyns champion XP, 807( big swimbaits), Conquest 905c(smaller swimbaits), NRX 894c(jig & worm), and I am looking for my next rod. I think I need to go to a true medium like an Expride 6'10", but sometimes I think I would get more use out of another MH like the NRX 873. The price point on an Expride is more appealing, but what is the point if I won't be fishing it as often. What is your suggestion for my next rod?
What techniques do you want the next rod to cover?
@@PunchFishing Currently I am doing mostly bank fishing, and with summer quickly approaching I am thinking frogging, crank baits and lipless to cover the upper water columns.
There's not one rod that covers those 3 things unfortunately. If you want a more reasonably priced MH, check out the 7'2 MH Expride. It's a killer rod. The 6'10 Expride could cover shallow cranks, lipless and jerkbaits.
Most highend inshore saltwater rods use recoil guides
Fair, but I was strictly speaking about bass rods. I'm from Minnesota so we don't see ANY salt tackle up here.

I tend do that anyways in some of my video's! They are really apples and oranges though. Megabass Destroyers are rods that can span multiple techniques w/ beautiful fit & finish. NRX rods are one trick pony's that do that one trick VERY well with no-frills.

So I own the 852s 852c 853c 894c and they are awesome but I have a question about the 873c, does it feel brittle when using flouro?
No not at all, it's a little stiffer than the 853/893c. I use fluoro on my 873c and it's great.

@@iamresta great question, honestly I find most reel reviews kind of boring. They are not as fun to talk about, IMHO. I'll definitely do some reel videos though. I really love the Lews Pro TI, Hypermag and Tatula LT spinning reels.

I've only had one Champion XP, and I liked it. Dobyns rods are very well balanced and they have a LOT of options on actions, powers and lengths (and lots of price points). They seem like fantastic rods with good customer service. I got nothing bad to say about them quite honestly. They just don't design & make their own blanks. They get supplied from China.

To be fair he gary dobyns designs his rods but yea they are made over seas
@@mgd2040 - I love Dobyns and Gary, and the fact they are built in China doesn't mean they aren't built well. I've owned 14 Dobyns and never had a problem with build quality, but yet you do hear about problems with build quality from the NRX, which is made in the USA. I'd rather have something built better from China, than built like crap from the USA, but if the builds are good I would choose the USA every time.
@@KJMFISHING I agree with the build quality not being good on NRX I bought one and it didnt look nice at all for the price. Im on a kick of buying all american made products still, searching for that brand I can stay loyal to and know I will get a nice rod from.

You can find NRXs used for under 400. This particular one might be harder to find but they do pop up.
Get a nrx on sale. Don’t go high end donyns route IF sensitivity is a top priority
LIVING LIFE ended up getting a champion extreme for 150 and love it more than my nrx but maybe it’s just me

If I’m spending $500 on a rod, I expect it to be the highest quality in every aspect. I want the best, most sensitive feeling guides, the ergonomic reel seat and handle. I feel that the NRX, and others that loomis makes are 10 years behind others. The shimano side has the Poison Adrena, which in my opinion are better rods.

I've yet to own a Posion. Are you into the JDM ones or the new ones they released to the USA? I handled the new ones and they are VERY light, but the handle material didn't blow me away. Felt too slick.
punchfishing yea the models that were released last year. I find I get a better grip on them even though they’re that “ci4” material due to the ergonomics. I only have a couple. Most of my rods are Phenix feathers...

punchfishing I have the the ML... the 6’7” I wish it was a 4-6” longer like but it’s really nice for wading to mitigate high sticking I guess. 🤷🏻♂️
@@suk6806 I think there's a few factors there. First, NRXs have been around for a decade and have a following. Second, you can go into many stores and buy a NRX in the US. Third, they are product that's hand made in the USA. Fourth, posions are JUST starting to trickle into US stores but with a very limited amount of models. I think Posions will take a while to get any penetration into the US market. Who knows if they ever get there.
Would this rod do well with frogging? Are there any other recommendations ?
I wouldn't use this rod for frogging, nor any NRX to be honest.

Thats crazy you would think with a well known company and how much the rods cost u think they would have no problem swapping out a rod with twisted guides
Loomis has very good customer support. I've just heard that if a guide is alittle "off center" from the factory they won't replace it.
Hows this rod compare to the 843 MBR ?
I've not used that rod personally.
In general the CRR was designed for bottom contact, the MBR line for moving baits - at least that's what I've concluded from researching both

@@dominickdelvecchio790 (apologize in advance for the long reply, especially since its PF's vlog) Well, to be honest, I sold both rods..... I had the NRX 852s and I had the Legend X in 7' Med Power Fast Action, so they were two totally different rods for two totally different applications. I LOVED the Legend X for 3.8 paddle tail Keitechs, heavier Neko rigs and light Texas Rigs. It was light, sensitive, plenty of backbone and balanced well (and it looked really sharp and was fun to fish). The NRX, like PunchFishing covered in one of his rod reviews, the 852s is light, sensitive and fits well in your hand, but it just wasn't the "caster" I wanted/needed it to be for light baits (small paddles tails, Wacky Rigs, Ned, small swim jigs etc), so for the investment made to own that NRX, I was really disappointed (see PF's 872s review, seems like a better rod). I immediately sold the NRX, and reluctantly sold the Legend X even though I really liked it for those heavier finesse applications.
That said, I started looking around for a rod line to handle both applications and I ended up trying a Dobyns Xtasy 752 (already had a couple of Champion Extreme HPs & DXs in my lineup), and was very impressed. So impressed that I picked up two more, Xtasy 722 and a 723. I am putting these through the paces this season to see if they handle the finesse applications better than the Legend X and NRX did and I plan on sharing my findings with PF, as I would love to get his take on these rods (as he has more time on the water with all these different high end brands).

So if your going to Spend $450 on a rod honest question.. Bottom Contact Jig, Texas rig specs. You can only have one??? Do you go NRX or Megabass Destroyer?
For baitcasting? I would go NRX if you have the money. Better warranty, amazing resale, and are built for bottom contact.
If you could have one high end rod would the NRX be it? Looking to jump in to a high end combo but do not want to be limited
What's your favorite technique?
Probably fishing smaller swimbaits and soft plastics. I love top water and jigs as well!
@@TropicaLJKD I would spring for a NRX if you REALLY like bottom contact presentations. Jigs, texas rigs, football jigs. NRX rods have extra fast action. If you're into swimbaits and topwater, a NRX won't really be the deal. If you want a more "all around" versatile rod, check out the Expride line.

Haha yeah man...don’t throw a bullshit reel on this rod. I mean, yes...it’ll absolutely work. But honestly, the only way you really reap the full benefit is with a good, lightweight reel. One side note....if you go too light, the nrx turns a bit tip-heavy. My aldebaran/nrx combo is lighter than air but it likes to dip. However, the new metanium (or the older model...they’re basically the same weight) works beautifully. It’s still light and balances more nicely with the rod, which actually makes it feel better/lighter in your hands. We’re sinking down into the absolute deepest pit of rod geekdom here, I’m aware of that...but I have a theory surrounding the whole thing. The nrx is about a decade old design. They weren’t really mass producing 5 ounce reels at that point so it makes sense that they feel better with reels that are a tiny bit heavier.

The ‘16 Metanium mgl’s are made for the nrx rods, I recently upgraded to the 20 Metaniums and the are great also. The alde mgl does feel awesome on the 852c for finesse stuff

Just a heads up, the newest production of nrx’s have torzites for the 3 stripper guides. Pretty much any nrx made after the conquest came out.

Honestly, I stay away from custom rods simply because of the lack of resale value. I like buying rods that I know I can get MOST of my money back from on the aftermarket. NOBODY wants to buy used custom rods. Even if you build (or order) a beautiful, high end custom rod.. you'l be lucky to get 40% of your money back if you sell it. I appreciate the custom rod builders out there, but I'm not going to order one anytime soon.

Got to handle some NRX today! I was quite impressed with the spinning rods, but the casting rods felt quite tip heavy save the 852.
I know this is not on the expride video, but I have been playing around with the 610ML model and I feel like the tips is just too soft for bass fishing. I’m thinking about getting an Orochi XX Shakeyhead or a Conquest 842S for finesse stuff. That expride is good for trout though.
@@russhaight3225 I actually have the conquest 842S and it's pretty awesome. If you're looking at the Orochi line id look at the Whipsnake also.
I’m thinking I will end up getting that conquest because then there will be no need to ever upgrade again haha. Do you plan on getting any of the new poison adrena models? I am curious about the 72H myself for jigs.
NRX is the "Bose" stereo of the rod world.....And this rod is a horrible CRR rod. It is not M/H..it is a Heavy.....better suited for heavy jigs/wakebaits fishing cover.

Fairly political review of Loomis NRX rods you chose this rod to present? So u kind of got a chance to bash their "same ole" , like the bully who claimed credit for a few legit criticisms of like the leading dog. You still kept you rod, they hold their value like no other, people love them. Just picking on you - was a good review on a good rod that you ultimately endorsed because of what was right and good about it! How many other lines can u name that fit in that category? Just got one of these and expect to enjoy it for its dragging qualities.
I used it tonight to catch a few Texas rigging! Its a very good rod, even if it's a bit outdated.

to feel the clunck of a mono to braid through the guides? what? you always reel a lure right to the last eye? then maybe 4 ft to the one knot? right. only real knobs may do that once if i teach them. false, trying to sell another brand you get money from? yes. but poor for advice for the first fishing person. too mutch crap on here too like that
