au revoir, Chick. Your music will continue to make people happy forever. “It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun.” - Chick Corea 6/12/1941-2/9/2021
so much LOVE...thanks for this version...many of us felt an up close and personal intimacy w Chick during his nightly covid practice and lost a dear Friend upon his sudden departure...
Chick Corea was one of the greatest. He has marked jazz with a new approach and style. On stage, he was one of the most generous musician. His death broke my heart. However, I have kept numerous glorious memories!
omg, another of the heroes of my youth has gone. I nearly cant stand it. RIP Chick Corea, I followed you since the early seventies. Now im drowning in tears. Sure i cant sleep this night. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Aylerone, thanks so much for uploading this recording. I was at this concert during the summer after my second year of college, staying with a wonderful Norwegian/French family. The family's son and I went to the festival and had an amazing time. This recording brings back great memories of an innocent time. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Chick. ouch. Stanley kills me with his intonation on the whole fingerboard. Chick kills me with fingers that surprise while being Chick's fingers and words.
Lenny White was in later editions of RTF, not this one. Not sure why Flora isn’t here, other than there are not vocals on this track. I think she played some percussion as well though.
Airto is the tall guy on the right side of the pic. Flora Purim is not present on this tour due to giving birth to a child. The guy between Airto and Stanley Clarke-forget his name-did the singing.
Isn't this the original Return To Forever lineup? (minus Airto's wife Flora Purim) Not sure who that little thing between Stanley and Airto is: Could it be Gayle (Mrs. Corea) Moran.
iroulis The gentleman standing between Stan Clarke and Airto is Vocalust/Percussionist ~ Bill Tragesser who was filling in for Flora Purim. The original Return To Forever debuted at the Village Vanguard in New York City, New York in October,1971. The original line up consisted of ~ Chick Corea ~ Electric Piano, Stan Clarke ~ Bass, Hubert Laws ~ Flute, Horacee Arnold ~ Drums, Flora Purim ~ Vocal/Percussion & Airto Moreira ~ Percussion. This line up never recorded in the studio. Hopefully live recordings might exist. Note: Both Hubert Laws and Horacee Arnold performed on the sessions that produced Chick Corea's two albums ~ "Is" and "Sundance" on May 11,12 & 13 1969. Both albums were released in 1969. In 2002, Jazz historian Michael Cuscuna compiled both albums with alternate takes and re~released the sessions on Blue Note Records entitled ~ The Complete "Is" Sessions. The sessions featured Chick's beautiful "Sundance", "Song Of The Wind" and some Free Jazz ~ "Is" "This", "Jamala".
monsterjazzlicks That lineup was the first Power Jazz/Rock version of Return To Forever. Lenny White was Chick's first choice as Drummer but he couldn't join because he had commitments to "Azteca". Chick asked Steve Gadd if he'd join and Gadd said yes. Once "Azteca" broke up, Lenny White finally joined RTF. Return To Forever performed at the 1973 Newport Jazz Festival with James "Mingo" Lewis on Congas/Percussion and Lenny White on Drums on July 6,1973 at the Philharmonic Hall with "Weather Report". Soon thereafter James "Mingo" Lewis left the band. Return To Forever then recorded "Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy" in August,1973 at the Record Plant. Note: "Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy" was first recorded by Return To Forever with Steve Gadd on Drums and James "Mingo" Lewis on Congas & Percussion but frustratingly, the recording session tapes were lost!!! What a tragedy!!!

As a Spaniard I should say that he should be awarded the Spanish nationality as he is so Spanish as he plays? Dios te pague, Chick

Maybe Lenny White (drums) took the picture??
Lenny White was not yet part of the band... Airto was on drums & percussion...
I assume that Flora and Lenny white and Airto are out of the picture

Wait, I heard someone singing along with the head as Joe Farrell played it. I can safely assume that it’s Flora, can’t I?

Is this in spotify?
Flora Purim??
Where is SOMETIME AGO, please?

Lol! It's Bill Tragesser

I thought it was Steve Gadd and Bill Connors who were the original RTF members?
The IS sessions band is closer to a large ensemble format of CIRCLE.
