Watching Derrick Rose highlights, you can see how he almost always lands with all of his weight on one leg. It seems so obvious now, but I guess no one taught him how to fall properly. We laugh now at how players like Kyrie Irving fall after every shot because it looks like he is just trying to draw a foul, but that is a great way to distribute force away from your joints and protect your legs. I'd rather fall on my ass after driving into the paint, then put a ton of pressure onto my legs just to stick the landing.

JUUST saw another comment on this, You got here first though, so I'm probably responding backwards here. anyway.
so, YES! that is it man..great specific detail there. SO, when did that start for him? at what age did it just feel natural to land all on one leg 6, 9,13...4?.. and come down with all that weight, staring to ware down his ankle knee and hip..and NOBODY no coach, no family member was like, you know your legs gonna fall off one day. I feel like he was just a few years to early. And now coaches and trainers look for these imperfections that can cause damage.. Its like watching folks with their heads all slumped over looking at their phones.. all i see is future neck trauma...(until we adapt as humans to have naturally slumped down necks..ha!) And man, even to this very day, the whole falling down on the ground thing.. I never appreciated it for that. I was always like.. ok man.,. really, if this were black top you would NOT be falling down that much.. but you are totally right. (and thank you again man!!!)

MAAAN, i was trying to pin you on the GREATEST DUNK video.. BUT YOU DIDN'T COMMENT!!! (we can fix that if you drop a comment over there...your choice tho..this one may be relevant with D Rose basically retiring)

I can't believe I missed commenting on the Dunk Video. Although having to watch Ewing get destroyed like 100 times in a row was demoralizing as a Knick's fan. That dunk is no doubt the best of all time...so far.
I'll stick with this comment though, I always really liked this video. It always pissed me off hearing older players criticizing current players for not playing through injuries. You've mentioned the idea of "soft" being the biggest insult a player can get now, and it really resonates in Derricks case. The guy have come back from so many career threatening aliments, he's not soft. I'm gonna miss watching Rose Play, his game was as unique as anyone's.

Just watched Curry in an interview address this exact issue. Apparently his gait was leading him to a bunch of ankle injuries so the team doctors adjusted the way he walked to make him less susceptible to injuries. He retrains himself every year how to walk and run. This stuff is real.

Jesus, guy, stick with it. When this channel explodes; don't give in and dumb it down. Your ability to cut through the bs and provide unique insight and nuanced perspective is unmatched. This is easily the most poignant DRose video on this whole darn thing
You've been cranking out content lately which is all dope, but you need to get on that shameless self promotion/SEO grind. Get a Twitter, IG and whatever else account, to open new avenues of introduction. Add all those links to the description box, and post all new content on all your Social Media accounts (especially on twitter: time releases for peak hours). This will cut into your content production time, but now is the best time to establish that infrastructure for the future
You mentioned some of the big names gave you some props, write up some collab scripts, offer to do the heavy lifting of the editing work in exchange for exposure on their bigger channels. Talent talks, they're not going to say no to a solid script; even your stream of consciousness freestyling is better then most NBA content out now
This is a long shot, but: Your trivia episode was a lot of fun, I bet you could convince the big guys (its right up Korzemba and Dom2K's alley, if you get either or both of them you're set) to play along. Their schedules probably won't line up perfectly, which is even better for you. Have each person play at their leisure, even if its just a skype sesh. Each of them could host their own performance on their channel, then link them all to the master cut on your channel (make sure they're all posted simultaneously to prevent cheating)
P.S. This is all a selfish pursuit for me, I just want your channel to grow, so I don't have to have to settle for dumb, mediocre and/or cookie cutter content. The advice is sound for now, but once you get big, I'm gonna push for investigative work... ignore that bc it'll be damn near impossible. Though you might score some interviews down the road if you can muscle through the inevitable rejections it takes to get them

First, thanks for the twitter work!

    • @THENBASTORYTELLER
      @THENBASTORYTELLER  7 років тому +18

Im not sure how I didn't see the second Half of this note.. . You make very good points, and Theres basically noting I can say in terms of Why I wouldn't pursue each one of those lanes. Between you and me and and any other person who reads this far. I have a mental barrier to deal with - I think about diving into some collab concept, and pitching it, then I battle with the fact that I dont really like what ANY of the "big" guy are doings - theres really not a ton of people i respect in this particular space. I absolutely respect their grind, and drive, and i even like the day in day out opinions, you know, whatever the topic of the day is, I get into it. But there's just so much laziness in the execution. ya know,... maybe not laziness, just lack of imagination. (even just from a musical standpoint, really? one song for EVERYTHING? ) And IN terms of my topics, especially the stuff I'm just sitting on (for the bigger audience i may have) I'm not willing to put anyone else's name on it. Then i think well i could write some hacksh script up and pitch, and it may be worth it. idk..
Your Trivia idea does sound interesting.. Actually, it sounds like something that is quite resonable, and worth a try. Also, it got me thinking along the lines of a competition . I've always thought there could be some topic tournament. where some random topic gets tossed out.. and everyone takes a stab at it, resulting in some sort of Who did it better scenario.. Or even like a debate, where two channels go head to head and on opposite sides of a topic and see who produces the strongest argument.. In that case I may need to formulate some sort of a challenge video.. Directly calling out the community to a Topic-off. hmmm does any of this make sense? any of that sound good?
I dont care what the topic is, I'm deeply confident that I would produce the hell out of something, and even if it wasn't the best argument, I'd impress the heck out of a wider audience. hmmmmmmm
actually iv been thinking about making the argument that There's easily a dozen modern players that are flat out better at basketball than MJ. maybe that can entice someone into a video debate.
actually let me strike something, there are a couple of folks I really do like, but they are not the big ones. And i have made "friends" with 4 channels so far, one you know, but we're in slightly different lanes. But maybe i can at least implore them to get the hype machine going for a challenge I propose... and maybe i just need to be more forward..
ok, I have to wrap this up - also, you can hit me on the message part of this channel, I do actually check it -
OHH one more thing for now..Talent talks is exactly whats up... Its basically how I've survived in the real world, and as a video producer for hire. I've basically lived off of referrals for most of my professional life. BUT this stuff, this world on here is a different animal. and I appreciate the advice, IDEAS and time... cause man i do understand, when i see something i genuinely like that someone else is doing, I'll do all the stuff i can to encourage. And its also pretty much impossible for me to hold back my ideas.. So you spending the time on here, I totally appreciate, and understand .. and really because I understand, i appreciate where its coming from even more.. Cause you legitimately dig the product.
and to your PS.. This is a balance.. And though i have found more time in my weekly schedule to spend on this... When /if i finally hit the tipping point - I prooooooomis I have some complex detailed, investigative type stuff up my sleeve ... (or where even i should keep it) and I have always had this idea that I don't want to be a reaction channel, not just commenting on what happen out there in the world, but literally create and uncover the topics folks react and respond to... all with a proper amount of absurdity... there are just WAAAY to many stories and people out there for folks to be huddling around the same few. ok, really that it for now.
      P.S. What do you do?

    • @Ez728
      @Ez728 7 років тому +7

I'm not gonna lie, I saw the notification for this awhile ago, and was like: bet... but I don't have time to respond it at this second... then I forgot about it until I saw my name on the list. It was that bittersweet moment of: that's dope I made the... crap I forgot he responded.
I can see exactly where you're coming from in terms others' content and execution. But that is exactly my point. You can piss out a potboiler episode or two, and basically give it to a competitor, in exchange the exposure (that took them at least a year or two to build).
Let's face it - other than: By Any Means Basketball, BBallBreakdown, In the Lab, (all of whom are in a slightly different market than yours) plus others I've never seen, - most of your competition is coming from whippersnappers. Most of them needed their time without an audience, to improve their craft before being ready for the spotlight
You've clearly been doing this kinda thing professionally, for awhile now. Your product doesn't need development, it needs marketing. The goal is to skip that long process of building an audience and just... I don't want to say steal one (but kinda)... let's call it taking a short cut.
That said, I must tip my hat to your... I'm gonna call it: gladiator marketing style. You metaphorically stepped into the ring and dared anyone to step up and take a beating. Like you said, nobody is going to be able to compete in writing or production value
So here is the question... what do you do if no one steps into the arena? Despite the large risk involved, I personally would love to see an McGregor-Mayweather-ish provocation parade of challenges and smack talk. Making a name for yourself like Ali did in his day.
I'm sure there is a lot of room for it on youtube as a medium, I just don't know exactly how that would play out. Tho, I can picture your whale mascot beating rivals up in the little thumbnail video clips. The problem is if it isn't taken in good faith... nobody wants to become the Heel. Once upon a time, even Ali had to deal with haters, who only watched in hopes someone would beat him.
As it stands, you are really the only guy that breaks the fourth wall in terms of competition, everyone else strays away from acknowledging other channels' existence. It will be hard to get them all to start collabing, but if you do, you all could build a lot of clout real fast... collectively, you could be the new Mike Stauffer
I also get what you mean about letting someone else put their name on your work, or even worse, diluting your own brand with too much hack. but as mentioned you've got an uphill battle ahead of you in terms of expansion, the gladiator style might work... but it's high risk
Relying on human bravery (taking that beating), is betting against the house. Appealing to ego (especially in this business) is more like to bear fruit. It is against human nature to ask for help (especially when you don't necessarily need it), but the humility is worth the pride you lose spamming everyone you contact.
Most people hate marketing themselves, ideally we all pawn it off to someone else like meeting a girl through a friend, or expanding a business by way of recommendations. Unfortunately, the UA-cam game (and Social Media in General) is all self promotion.
One thing you could do is take the Tyler Durden approach and give you fans homework. I bet if you straight up told your fan base, to spam the big guys comment sections with topic challenges; a surprising amount would do it for the lulz
Also if you strike gold with the Leroy story, SIT ON IT. That is some nice leverage for many uses, you might even convince youtube to make you a featured channel or something to get your subs up before the release
Conversely, if you strike unobtainium be super careful. The Jordan Brand has a LOT of money and clout, and they probably won't take too kindly to anything that threatens the brand. They probably won't rough a youtuber up or anything, but Muddying the waters with some ad hominem... maybe
That said your Investigative work has been excellent thus far. On that topic, I am a pen for hire by trade. Sometimes I'm a journalist, but really... I mostly get paid to boil pots. I don't mind it too much, bc it gives me time to write the book I've been working on for the past few years
My life's goal is to finish the series of books I have been mapping out for years now, then to turn it into a TV series ( A) bc nobody reads books anymore and B) bc I want to take advantage of the pros and cons of the each of two mediums vis-à-vis storytelling (e.g. I want highlight different perspectives within the story by way of episodes)). As long as I keep progressing in that regard I can stay sane and happy... -ish

So is Vince Carter the closest to the ideal physiological makeup & regiment to take care of their body in the NBA?
He played at the highest level since College, pulled off some of the most athletic plays all the time & likely the single most athletic play in Basketball history.
But he’s still out here, he played for 8 teams, did best on the Raptors & Nets, in Orlando his stats & minutes took a dip. And he would eventually become a solid Role players for the last few years.
He’s now 41. Can still dunk in-game, here and there (albeit nowhere near the high flying acrobatics he used to pull off but impressive none the less, since at the Park I don’t see many 40 year olds throwing it down)

Thank you for the effort and time you put in to give us extremely excellent content. I love the editing, the information, and the new and unique takes you make on the subject of basketball! Keep doing your thing man!

I love this video. I come back to it from time to time to remind myself to take care and listen to my body. We hear these messages telling us to push our body and play through the pain to get better, but to neglect self care, posture and body mechanics is a dangerous game to play. Keep up the great content!

I had to come back and watch this video after watching highlights of his 50 point game. He is moving completely differently now Obviously broke down his whole game and way of moving and built it up again. An very rare accomplishment and much different than just "hard work".

Coming from a Lakers fan Derrick Rose was and is still my favorite basketball player and I was definitely one of the guys feeling sorry for him up until this video, I'm starting to look at his situation and the sports world take on injuries in a whole new light. So glad I found this channel man.

Man you content is top tier, easily the best I've seen from an NBA youtuber. So true about how Derrick Rose moves, never realized it before. People under estimate gait and how if its off, feet, knees and hips are all compromised. He was putting massive force on his body being out of alignment. Crazy to think did the trainers at the Bulls did not pick this up and help with excercises to strengthen his feet and fix his walk. They just helped get him stronger, giving him more ability to put more pressure thru his incorrect movements. Now we seeing it with Zion too.

You've got me subscribing to you Man because this was an amazing look at the tragedy of Rose. I always looked at the way he moved as different but I was too busy being 'ooohhhed & ahhhd' like everyone else by his finishing moves to think there was something really wrong. I just thought he was amazing to watch because of his acrobatic twisting style & would occasionally think, 'Man he can't keep this up'. Then comes the first major injury against Philadelphia & all I could think was Anfernee Hardaway............

Thanks for pushing back out at the bullshit that fans often throw at recovering athletes (I may be guilty sometimes of that too).
Funny enough, as a runner I also find myself just “pushing through the pain” and ignoring my body to tell me to stop. Great reminder to everyone to make sure they listen to what their body is telling them so they don’t have to be reminded of their mistakes in the future.

I was in the army for many years, and I know a lot of broken soldiers from too many ruck marches and generally pushing your body, or the truly unlucky, the ones missing limbs (not to mention the dead ones), and none of us were paid millions of dollars. My right hip is never going to heal, and that's just the way it is.

Ay but great vid never would have recognized the correlation. As a huge bulls fans I always noticed this with him even my dad mentioned how weird he lands off layups and even just noticing how hard he jump steps it’s clear that this type of abuse to an already crooked ass body would lead to irreparable and inevitable decay. Even after he came back from first acl injury I could notice he changed his jump shot. I pointed it out to my cousins but they didn’t even notice! I could just tell that he had to have changed his form. But there was no news article talking about him changing his form to improve accuracy or anything. This change happened because, following his injury, he started to change his jump shot to compensate for his hurt leg. He would lean weirdly forward and kinda jump more in motion rather than straight up and down.he would also land completely differently. Anyway great vid and I’m definitely gonna start to notice this in more currrent players and set a clock on their inevitable injury lol.
