- This video was originally supposed to illustrate why you should buy authentic products instead of clones. But, honestly, I can't say that and be so black and white after this experience. Depending on what you consider to be most important, this video may change your mind, at least for these products. How did the Chinese Knockoff TBS Triumph Clone fare against the Authentic TBS Triumph? Watch to find out.

This is my favorite video that I've ever seen you do Josh you need to do more like this this is absolutely awesome and I cannot agree more... if I use a real Triumph on my quad and a different style antenna on my goggles I get much better results similar to what you found in your test.. but I have found that I've had to use different channels with different antennas to get better reception quality

First crash my knockoff opened up and 1 of the antenna poles just fell off. On further inspection none of them are very securely soldered on. Great video. The knockoffs are junk. I came across this video as I was attempting to repair the knockoff lol.

Note the RSSI in the test. E.g. minute 11:30. They are pretty different. Maybe some external element biased the results e.g. humidity
Hey Josh, I’m having issues with my TBS OEM’s Triumphs. I just came across yoru video here and like others, I was surprised with performance of the clones. I hit the link below but since its been a year the TBS clone antennas are no longer there. Would you happen to remember the manufacturers name? If so could you let me know...I’d like to give those I try. Thanks man!

UgpFpv far view pagodas are the best ive used thus far and the little stubby one with a lid on it has been pretty tough

My Triumph is shiny but it has TBS on the connector...
After I made this video, the cloners started adding the TBS logo to the hardware. However, it still stands that a shiny plastic is a clone. If you're not purchasing directly from team blacksheep, or one of their authorized resellers, it's most likely a clone.
On your second test did you try a different frequency? Maybe the antenna are tuned to a slightly different frequency (different lengths on the antenna poles).
+Aaron Murray Good suggestion. I did not. But I'll be adding all of these things to a list and trying to organize them into other test passed for documentation.
the original TBS has TBS mark engraved on the Connector? just bought from china the casing is black mate and the Connector engraved wirh TBS
4y old video but still useful for me, the quality is all about the accuracy of antenna length, maybe it is luck the clone get it right sou you get the better reception. there are other factors like thickness and shielding but the clone seem much thicker then TBS...
You may have already answered this, so my apologies if you have already answered: Did you fly the opened antennas? i.e. after you opened them?
+Steve Winnard I did not. I used the antennas in flight before i opened them to inspect their construction. I just presented the video in a reverse format.

Joshua Bardwell did an antenna shootout where he compared 5-6 different antennas. The triumph didn't do as well as some of the others
That's right. And in looking at some of those other antennas, the one thing that none of them can touch as well is that non-existent know that the Triumph accounts. That probably has a little bit to do with its performance.
Well shit, I got a pair of the chinese copies when I ordered off Amazon and now I'm not sure if I should send them back.

I have legit triumphs, always liked them and I also have a BS patch. All good so far but that's all been close in testing with a heap of Re bar and concrete.
I hope to get out tomorrow in open space and I'll do some testing with all these. I have some nice Emax pagodas which I haven't even tried yet, Oh and I also have some Farview stuff to throw in the mix as well.
Long day for me...Damn, I am gonna have to fly for Hours!!!!

In all honesty, you can find them easily on eBay, AliExpress, or any of those other websites because they look like 2 for 1 Triumph deals. Also, if you go to tbs's website and look up their list of authorized retailers, any website selling these that is not an authorized reseller is selling clones.

Hey Josh will the tbs triumph antenna always have there logo on the sma connector
I've seen some counterfeit antennas that have it now. If you want authentic gear, buy from an authorized reseller. If you think the price is too good to be true, it is.

I know! I was expecting hate over this one. I did a follow up to it, also, and had the same results, so I'm confident in my results. It has nothing to do with being a good/bad antenna; it's a great antenna. But like all antennas, it was engineered with a purpose and so you have to understand it's parameters.
Maybe all that extra foam actually impedes signal??
I don't think so. The antenna is engineered to accommodate this part of it's construction.
Could it be that the tbs triumph wasn't screwed down completely? Or were you using a connector? I can't believe that the tbs lost to a clone and that too this dramatically.
Everything was secure. I found it surprising, too. In the end and to this day I still run the strix hoot because I find it gives the perfect balance between performance and durability.

Actually I use a mad mushroom and a crosshair on the goggles, and the hoot on the drone.

I got a $4 "no brand" 3 triple feed antenna patch, the quality amaze me too. original product included R&D and everything but clone... just material & clone cost
Try 800mw my triumph has been solid for 3 years
I truly think it's because of the foam The the true Triumph has more phone therefore it's insulated more the Clone has less there for you get better signal but that's just my opinion
Crazy difference. Could one of the Triumphs be damaged?
I considered that and bought a second set of triumphs and ended up having the same results. I did a part 2 after this video just to be sure.

Here's the thing... You can do just as good as the Triumph for happy the price. Check out the Strix Hoot.

Josh Withrow hey thanks for making this video. I actually just realized they are cloning the TBS TRIUMPH antennas, and about fell over when I saw the price of the real ones! Sounds like the Pagodas might be a better way to go for me.
If you want something tough (even the best Pagodas leave allot to be desired), check out the Strix Hoot.

I use clones and love them. I have 20-30 of them. They are $4 on AliExpress. Just ordered 6 more. So far I destroyed only 2 in a very hard crash. I have 15 drones and all of them have clone TBS. I got also bunch of pogodas clovers and other kids. But clone TBS are the best.
i just found out the hard way that the clones are absolute shit, tumbled landing yesterday nothing too heavy, but then i noticed a small rattle in the antenna, thought nothing of it but to continue flying. moments later on rebooting my quad the VTX was kaput. though i was saving £££s on a cheaper version. how wrong i was. Now im shelling out for a new vtx, this time with better (non-knock off equipment) false economy in the long run.

Did you compare their performance when lined up with the antenna axis (i.e. facing the end)? Remember that Pegoda's (slightly) out perform the Triumph in the horizontal plane because the Pagoda is LESS sensitive in the vertical plane. i.e. the Triumph has a more spherical propagation pattern. So I offer the theory that - the clone triumph has a very flat (horizontal) sensitivity.
But whatever, the clone is a direct and blatant attempt to deceive - it's packaged and sold as a real Triumph. Fraud, criminal, lying thieves. Knowingly supporting such actions equally shares the crime. Don't choose to be a scum bag. You will bleed.

I tested them all on the same plane... coming straight out of the back of the quad, no bend. On the goggles, oriented straight up in the air. Good suggestion!

it's about .15 dB increase in gain perpendicular to the antenna according to 4nec2. Just having more gain isn't strictly better. I'd be more interested to see circularity and axial ratio, which I imagine have suffered.
