DJI + Long Range FPV : It's A Love / Hate Relationship

  • An exciting first look at how the DJI 03 video system handles long range FPV mountain surfing. My video freezes flying down a gully, I get sprayed by a waterfall and I push myself to get in as close as I can to the wind lip at the peak. Even with almost 1kg of li-ion cells strapped to the drone, a strong wind leaves me wondering if 3.2v per cell will actually get me back home.

    Ooopfh, yea the “freezing” and potentially “rebooting” is the main reason I use HDZero for my long-range mountain stuff. For years I used analog, but found HDZ offered the same feel/feedback with much better image.
    DJI looks unbelievable, but it, and WalkSnail, both have variable latency/resolution, and can suddenly “freeze” and “un-bind” in bad situations… too risky for me.
    Anyway, glad to see you experimenting, that stress and excitement is what we live for, cheers man!

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  Рік тому +4

      Yes, well said. This one is really meant as more of a mid range ripper with it's 1500kv motors. But I always get the urge to fly everything to the top of a mountain, even my big (and very inefficient) octocopter has done some serious mountain diving.

    • @GiantAntCowboy
      @GiantAntCowboy Рік тому +1

      @@FalconRadFPV yup, totally get it. You basically have to… I’d love to see you try HDZero and hear your thoughts. I’d ship you a spare HDZ VRX but shipping from Norway to Canada is probably more expensive than just buying a second hand VRX. Of course I don’t know if your Orca goggles work any more… 😬😅

    • @lalilaloe
      @lalilaloe Рік тому +1

      Doesn't hdzero cut out too if it loses connection? Or does it get video back just as fast as analog?

    • @GiantAntCowboy
      @GiantAntCowboy Рік тому +2

      @@lalilaloe HDZero performs the same as analog because the is no “connection” to lose. Like analog the VTX simply broadcasts a signal and the VRX receives it. There is no two-way communication or system binding like with DJI and WS which means the image comes back the instant LOS is restored. A huge benefit in my opinion. (I’m going to post a video of my favorite “lost video” moments to illustrate this point soon. )
      Additional benefit, like analog, this means any other HDZ VRX can ‘tune in’ and receive your video transmission as well which is awesome for “co-pilots” and other uses.

      Interesting to read about HDZ. I'm in the planning phase for a totally new LR drone and haven't decided yet if I should go for DJI O3 or HDZ.
      O3 seems superior when it comes to distance (and penetration) on everything else I like HDZ.

      Man, DJI FPV and RTH always make my heart skip a beat, especially when I'm zipping through the Alps like a daredevil. It's like, signal goes nuts, RTH takes control, and suddenly I'm sweating bullets, praying it won't smack into some rock. Your vids really drilled into me the whole "stay in line of sight" wisdom.
      Now, here's the thing, DJI FPV's got me on this time crunch anxiety-4.5 minutes? Seriously? I'm so obsessed with the countdown that I sometimes forget where the heck I'm flying. Can't wait to switch to a drone that hangs in the air for a cool 20-30 minutes-that's the real deal. Your videos, man, they make me feel like I'm up there soaring with the birds.

    I figured out your rough location, and for just the tiniest of moments the snow blocked line of sight. Analog would've just given a blip of full static, but these frame correcting systems get choppy or hard freeze. It's so unnerving! Been going long on Walksnail and it does the same kind of stuff. The only thing giving me enough confidence to reach out that far is iNav's RTH system.

    Great video. I have lots of experience flying far with O3, both with V2 goggles and G2/Integra. The different goggles exhibit COMPLETELY different behaviour in marginal signal scenarios. G2/Integra can be run down to 5mbps and still deliver a beautiful and stable image, whereas the V2 goggles are in the danger zone here. The big problem with V2 is that when they do lose link completely, it often never recovers. This is due, I believe, to them dropping into low power mode after total link loss. DJI apparently did not test this and does not care. I have replicated this multiple times.
    In contrast, G2/Integra recovers astonishingly quickly. This is rarely talked about and incredibly important to understand when pushing this system out far.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  3 місяці тому +1

      Thank you! Finally, a reason behind the extended video recovery time for DJI goggles v2. I've been wondering about this since I got my DJI setup. (interesting to hear that it's solved for the next round of goggles, typical DJI not to bother updating firmware for older products to work after bugs are figured out.

    • @earthsgrip
      @earthsgrip 3 місяці тому

      @@FalconRadFPVA pleasure! This issue is personal as it contributed to an expensive loss of gear. DJI denied that it represented a safety issue. DJI to their credit did a lot of work to add O3 air unit compatibility to the V2 goggles, but the hardware is among other things incapable of H.265 encoding. So the V2 goggles have a second tier H.264 implementation of O3 with various missing features. Clearly this implementation was never properly tested.
      I have to say that my experience flying LR with O3/ Integra has been fantastic. It is night and day better behaved than O3/V2. If I fly behind a rock, it freezes but rapidly comes back. I've even managed to black screen it (surprisingly difficult), and the image returned after 5s or so. It's a fantastic system.

      No, not with the v2 goggles. With the Goggles 2 and the Integra you can record the OSD on the DVR footage but with the V2 it’s not possible unfortunately.

    Awesome flight man. Glad you used the O3 and liked it (for the most part). When you fly analog, you seem to use pretty good helicals - here you had just DJI stubbies and the crystalHDs right? As to my last test (now you're invited to watch ;) the crystals are just ok. Get the TrueRC X²Air2's - they are very compact but good signal! Or maybe use your helicals with an rpsma to sma adaptor.
    I'm always so nervous too when out far. I like how your wonderful co-pilot and spotter holds your shoulder to calm you down and prevent certain death from FPV induced heart attacks - she's a lifesaver! greets, Mario

    That cutout was super sketch 😅 I just got an O3 for my fixed wing. Very excited to see how far I can realistically push it! Analog for fixed wing long range just doesn't do it for me!

    • @SkeezyFPV
      @SkeezyFPV Рік тому

      Just remember you’re gonna need an fc or use an arduino to spoof an FC to get the O3 air unit out of low power mode if you’re using it on a fixed wing or you’ll have no range.

    You should be seeing your mbps. That number is the best reference to signal strength. With the 03 unit, as you get below 10, and certainly to 5, it will work but you are in risk territory.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  Рік тому +1

      DJI for sure looks better the catch is if you lose video with DJI it takes a lot longer to come back than it does with analog. If your long range flying style is to get in really close to the environment and risking losing video then analog is best. If you have a lot of long range experience then you might be practiced enough at flying with no video to be able to handle no video for several seconds. If you are flying very close to the ground GPS rescue will risk crashing into the ground. When flying close to the ground you need to level out and throttle up before switching on GPS rescue.

    I've been considering buying the DJI Goggles Integra but have just learned that it's not easy to fit long-range antennas to them. Now I'm looking at the Goggles 2 instead, as it seems they come with MXC? connectors. I want goggles that aren't bulky so I can easily fit them in my backpack too. In the meantime I'm still on analog ☺

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  5 місяців тому

      The goggles V2 are big and bulky but have the option to easily change all four of the antennas. But then ya the new smaller ones only let you change two of the antennas. I think TrueRC makes antennas that fit on the newer DJI goggles.

    Impressive tbh. Agreed, the unit should light up the osd when mbs drop to zero as that half second could mean a crash. Random Q but do you know of an antenna tracker capable of working with any of the dji units?
