  • FOR ALL MANKIND/JAMESTOWN TOUR
Exploring the possibilities that might exist if the global space race had continued.
For All Mankind is an American science fiction web television series created and written by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi and produced for Apple TV+. The series dramatizes an alternate history depicting "what would have happened if the global space race had never ended" after the Soviet Union succeeds in the first manned Moon landing.
For All Mankind premiered on November 1, 2019, and was renewed for a second season in October 2019.

Imagine if we switched the military's budget with the NASA budget.

I like how they started with calling it an outpost as a colony would need to be either self sufficient or mostly self sufficient.

1:59 Minor critique: I notice much of the internal construction, including the bunks, are done with T-slot framing, such as "80/20". Having worked with that stuff, it's convenient, but sorta heavy - something launched to the Moon would want to have as little mass as possible, so I'm doubtful they would have used that. All the frames would have probably been TIG-welded aluminum tubing, more expensive but when it costs thousands of dollars per kilo to launch it comes out ahead. Don't blame the set designers for using it though, it's easy to work with and has a suitable aesthetic.

There is the argument that with the advent of sea dragon and the potential military uses of Jamestown, NASA's budget was padded so that material that is, as you said, easy to work with would be sent to the moon despite the weight.
After all if the US military had their way they'd probably expand or replicate Jamestown as a fully militarised outpost, it makes sense that they'd want a tried and tested lunar construction method that is quicker and requires less specialiased knowledge, especially when the moon is under such heavy surveillance and secrecy is essential.

@@SlimTheydy Good points. The extra budget doesn't make a huge argument, as that could be used either to lift more mass or to build more expensive but lighter framing. I'd think the lighter framing would be more cost-effective, so they'd rather spend the money on that regardless of how much they have.
Sea Dragon could change the equation though, I get the sense it was designed to lift massive payloads at minimum cost, so the cost per kilo might be lower and thus weight reduction would be a lesser priority than it is in our universe. I seem to recall that the initial Jamestown module was launched as part of a Saturn V 3rd stage, which was originally intended to become Skylab (the same Skylab as our universe) but a moon base was regarded as a higher priority. Thus, presumably not launched with Sea Dragon, which to my understanding came later in their timeline.
The military bit could make sense though. From what I've seen (admittedly clips, not the series as a whole) they were eager to get a base on the Moon as quickly as possible. The Military would also have the same reasons to want to minimize mass, but if they want it to be launched ASAP they might prioritize that less and be more concerned about whatever they can throw together quickly. TIG welded aluminum frames would require an extensive design process, working with vendors, machining, welding, post-processing, and so on, which would take time (and no amount of money could make it happen faster). I actually worked briefly for Sierra Space, and the amount of bureaucratic process necessary to get something from engineer to production floor is simply absurd. T-slot framing someone could throw together in a couple hours, say "good enough," and launch it, bypassing that entire process.
You also mention expansion - the idea of Jamestown was to be able to expand it, as they did later in the series. That would be another advantage of the T-slot framing, as it could more easily be modified, re-configured, dismantled, or turned into something else. For example the triple-bunk bed. If they later expanded with another module that would allow more berths and spreading out, they could convert the triple-bunk bed into a two-bunk bed in an hour or so with basic tools. Or turn it into a work bench or table, whatever they need. Wouldn't be able to do that if it were welded. That's just one example, but I could see preferring the T-slot construction for it's modularity and ability to be easily reconfigured, for future situations foreseen or not. Especially given the haste it was designed in, they'd probably not have planned out what's next, just want to get it to the Moon and figure out the rest later. The T-slot framing would give more flexibility for whatever they do later on, while welded would require future plans be taken into account. This is probably the biggest argument in favor of it.
Thus, in context, I doubt the bigger budget and Sea Dragon were factors, but the time urgency and future reconfigurability were.

@@noremorsewoodworking2258 NASA's budget today is a trivial percentage of federal spending. NASA's budget is less than half a percent of federal spending (0.48%).
