It`s some of the best science fiction we got in decades. Really recommend both the books and the show to anybody just remotely interested in the genre.
One of? If you're just looking at how well they blend realism and a good story its the best. Sure older shows might have just been limited by the technology at the time, but other popular science fiction shows don't even come close to the expanse in realism.
Idk, I read the first three books and started Cibola Burn, and I just gave up. The first book is great, but the second book is just the same thing again (except Avasarala). I know it's two authors, and I think I like Abraham but not Frank. So much of it feels pretentious and moralizing, everyone's over emotional, the only characters I like are Avasarala and Miller. And they always act like Miller was a villain or something, Naiomi always telling Holden "don't become Miller". Why is Holden our main character? He's not all that bright, and he just bumbles from one situationto another from pure chance. The most interesting thing in the books is the mysterious alien stuff, but book two has nothing on that, book three has less than it should, focusing on just a bunch of people fighting over nonsense, only spending a chapter or two on the alien station. After that I googled it to see how much we learn in later books, turns out it's very little, so I tried reading book four, and found without that suspense I cared very little about what happens, it started with some people being like "oh thsse people want to colonize our planet, that's bad" then they resort toshooting at each other and talking about morality again, and I gave up. Now tell me, judging by these criticisms would I enjoy the show more? I watched the first episode before the books, but it didn't really peak my interest, and all the greys and the dark lighting made me feel sick. Should I stick through it?
@@Mersault26 The first Episode is in my opinion one of the weaker ones. The Show really does start of slow, but it becomes way faster paced than the books. RedBattalion9000 I don’t know how I feel about that, the refreshing thing was The Expanse wasn’t “the bachelor in space” there’s broad stroke sexuality but the show doesn’t hinge on “while they or won’t they?” If the books are focused on that, its disappointing.
Just binged all 3 seasons of the Expanse. Tbh what makes this series so compelling is the fact that each of the great characters is so well integrated into the world. We understand the world through them, and the writers have done a fantastic job at keeping them so related. Miller and Avasarala might be the best characters in sci-fi I've ever encountered.
That's what I love about The Expanse, this realism in spacefaring (minus the Epstein Drive). It shows that science fiction doesn't have to be based arround some supposed advanced technology to be entertaining.
Exactly. I really love the concept of the Epstein Drive as a technical worldbuilding device, because it's just this ONE simple thing that's unrealistic but easy to get over, but it allows an incredible world and story to unfold with physics and economics we can recognise from our world. That avoids the problem a show like Star Trek often has, where what is and isn't possible for the characters is either completely unpredictable (which makes the whole story lose tension) or it has to be constantly explained, which becomes a drag. However if you're watching the Expanse, you just need to know 1. they have these rocket engines that work like regular rocket engines but somehow super efficient, just accept that 2. everything else works according to our scientific laws.
@@gamlaman remember, just because we haven't developed the science for the ED, doesnt mean we CAN'T.. I doubt anyone believed it was possible to split or fuse atoms before a certain point. And there are undoubtedly physics issues that apply in deep space we cannot model for on Earth.
Even the Epstein Drive is not beyond the realms of credibility. For any realistic colonisation of the solar system there would have to be a drive system better than conventional rocket engines as they exist now. That there would then be an improvement on that is a given. We went from the Wright Flyer to Concord, and putting a man on the Moon in 63 years. The Epstein Drive is a get around to make The Expanse work but it is not unrealistic. We may not get an Epstein Drive like it is described in the books and series, but we will have something.
@@gamlaman , even so, fusion drives could theoretically achieve the thrust and efficiency of the Epstein drive (albeit, the radiation and heat dissipation problems are non trivial and relegate it to still being fictional). Do believe scott manley did a video on it.
When the only stuff on TV and in the movies is Star Trek, Star Wars (hardly sci-fi beyond the spaceships), and most of those are more about the action and blowing stuff up in space, The Expanse looks harder than Mike's Hard Lemonade. People: "Ugh, realism and science are boring, sci-fi movies and shows can't be realistic, otherwise they won't be interesting". The Expanse: "Hold my beer".
I want to read the books so badly, but then I remember how I absolutely loved Game of Thrones season 1 and that made me go buy and read all the ASoIaF books that were out so far, and then for the rest of the show's run I only saw its flaws and its ways that it didn't measure up to the books. I don't want that to happen with The Expanse the show. I think I'm going to wait until the show is over until I read the books.
I've read the first 5 books. I was someone who had read all of the ASOIAF books before show too so I know what you mean by having reservations. The books absolutely are more in depth and flesh out the story a bit more than the show. Books always do that. I do believe that the show stays true to the identity of each character and the plot in general. All the gripes I have with GoT from Season4+ I have no had thus far for The Expanse. I can say when season 3 finished. I yelled "Fuck this, I am not waiting a whole year for more show. I need to know what happens!" and went out and purchased next 2 books. I had at that point been trying to keep the show and book progression relatively similar so I didn't spoil / ruin anything.
@Wangtorio Jackson same for me! I was just telling a friend about the Expanse and how watching the TV show has actually been mysterious, and unpredictable, so much so I want to keep watching the show without reading the books, you only get to go through your first time once, and I want to be on the edge of my seat the whole time, not knowing what happens next. I do want to read the books too, but if they are even better than the show then I have something to look forward to after the show is over.

At least Mass Effect has the decency to not even attempt to hide the fact that its spacecraft is actually a jet plane in space. I hope the Expanse will influence the aesthetics of sci-fi, at least to the extent that it stops pretending space is exactly like the sky. But now I'll get back to Mass Effect, which I'm finally playing for the first time. It's as soft as sci-fi gets, but that's okay, because it's awesome.

They really need better marketing I ignored it until the pandemic and loving I had 4 seasons to watch, but missed out on knowing it has existed for 4 years as there are books too.
PASHANG, this is one the best TV show i ever in the longest time. It has been suggested to me through multiple social media like Reddit and 9GAG for years.
Excellent overview. Miller's story arc reminds me of the film Noir movie, "Laura" , where Dana Andrews as a detective becomes obsessed over the murder of a beautiful woman he never met. A painted portrait of her in her apartment looms large in his fascination with the dead victim.
The Expanse is the best sci Fi TV series in a long while. I finally got to watching it 5 days ago and I finished binging it today, some parts don't make sense, but overall it's amazing, especially the amount of details and realism of these details.
Love the world of that book, it’s something about the human’s complex emotions and logics but also backed up with reasonable amount of science and technology involvement
Such an incredible series. The best show I've ever seen by far. I think I'm actually going to read the books. First time I've planned on reading fiction.
So glad you made an Expanse video! I've been a fan since the pilot! As you've stated what i love is the attention to science realism in the show, where most movies don't bother trying, The Expanse is great because it tackles science head on instead of trying to gloss over the scientific discrepancies.
Oh, shit! I paused this five seconds in. Currently reading Leviathan Wakes, and I'm almost halfway through it. Will come check these out as soon as I'm done. I can't believe you're doing a series on The Expanse!! SO COOL!
I read the books and watched the show. The Expanse is one of very few tv shows that lives up to, and even improves on the books, which are also excellent.
Even though I've read all the books and watched all the Seasons three times, I still feel I've learnt something by watching this! Great Job and Keep it Up! Thanks for keeping the flame of the Expanse burning strong.

*The Expanse is a very addictive series.*
*I finished the 4 seasons in 3 days during quarantine.* 😍😄
Kakarotto MUI ditto, I’m just rewatching them one a day now like syndication rofl
I'm completely enthralled with this series and books. I really wouldn't have checked it out without your particular kind of reviewing style. More videos please
Best series I've seen in a long time, this and GOT are easily my favourites of this decade.
Was about to bring up The Wire then I remembered I'm old!
I think this t.v. series steered clear of the problems of Game of Thrones. It didn't fizzle out at the end.
YES! I recently got into this show and binged the first 3 seasons and I'm so excited to hear about the next season coming to Amazon. So good. MORE EXPANSE MORE EXPANSE GO GO GO ! Cannot wait for you to do more videos on this.
This is the video that introduced me to The Expanse. I'm now 5 books deep and starting the show so i cant thank you enough!
Great video! I can't recommend this show highly enough to anyone who's not seen it. The small technical and scientific details that the show gets right is just pure nerdgasm for scifi fans. I really love it. I'm so glad Amazon picked it up for more seasons. I can't wait. Would love to see more Expanse content from you - one of my favorite shows and one of my favorite YT content creators - doesn't get much better!
and forsome extra nerdgasm... adam savage is in it :-)
I'm so happy to see you covering The Expanse... my favorite show at the moment.. right next to GoT.
Same here
Absolutely thrilled that you're doing vids on The Expanse. Theres a whole wealth of things you can talk about from the book series.
Amazing work as usual.
So happy to see The Expans here. It's really cool to have good space opera on screen again.
After seeing this video I decided to give this show a shot. Honestly I'm loving it so far. Great show and I appreciate you turning my attention to it. You should definitely do more summary videos of high quality shows like this.
Ahh I haven't read the books yet and there were a couple things I missed in the show and was still wondering about so it's really awesome to see a video breaking everything down so well without spoiling any of the plot. Thank you!!
Great series of novels & well done screen adaptation. Happy to see more UA-cam channels covering The Expanse ♡
Just unambiguously excellent television. Definitely going to have to get around to reading the books some time.
Thanks for this one, ASX!
I am about halfway through Leviathan Wakes and watched a couple episodes of the show. This is a great breakdown of everything, thank you for doing this without spoilers!
I love this show. One of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
Watched episode 1 then I was like, wtf did I just watched?? Then I searched on UA-cam to explain things and found this video. You sir, are a saviour. Thank you.
because of you i've binged the entire show in 2 weeks time... no regrets
Ready for Season 4. I agree with the comments. This is the best sci fi show I've watched.
Currently reading Leviathan Wakes, the first book. I really enjoy the hard-scifi approach, it makes everything feel more grounded, kind of like ASoIaF does for fantasy.
The show has a few scenes that are just spectacular. Those scenes alone are enough to watch the whole series.
Man, I love your videos. I have seen ads for The Expanse and had no idea what it was about or any interest in it...now I'm hooked! Can hardly wait for GoT to come back to see your new videos for that! Great job!
@antiami Um, no. Lots of people are naturally curious or instinctively drawn to things without anyone's direct input. Others are not. People are different from one another and the breadth of humanity is filled with variation.
Love The Expanse! Glad to see they are going to make a season 4.
Great video and review!
Thanks for explaining Alex’s Texas accent!❤
Excellent overview. Miller's story arc reminds me of the film Noir movie, "Laura" , where Dana Andrews as a detective becomes obsessed over the murder of a beautiful woman he never met. A painted portrait of her in her apartment looms large in his fascination with the dead victim.
The Expanse is the best sci Fi TV series in a long while. I finally got to watching it 5 days ago and I finished binging it today, some parts don't make sense, but overall it's amazing, especially the amount of details and realism of these details.
I’ve been looking for a new realistic sci-fi series to get into!!! This looks awesome
You have no idea.
Love the world of that book, it’s something about the human’s complex emotions and logics but also backed up with reasonable amount of science and technology involvement
Such an incredible series. The best show I've ever seen by far. I think I'm actually going to read the books. First time I've planned on reading fiction.
Thanks so much, this was better than a recap.
The looming alien threat ISN'T the space mormons?
The Hunter x Hunter 2011 Dickriding Association no it’s intergalactic Chimera Ants 🐜
@@GearZNet OH YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS! (I always wanted the ants to replace humans)
dum dum dum dum dumb ;)
lol!
In the series, they had, as a whole, good enough sense of wanting to leave our neighborhood behind for good.
As a huge Expanse fan, this video has exceptional information. 10/10!! Thanks for this great video.
So glad you made an Expanse video! I've been a fan since the pilot! As you've stated what i love is the attention to science realism in the show, where most movies don't bother trying, The Expanse is great because it tackles science head on instead of trying to gloss over the scientific discrepancies.
Just binge-watched the first 5 seasons. Now waiting for the sixth to come out!
Once upon a time when there was a discussion page in UA-cam sites, I asked for something like this (here).
You delivered.
Thank you.
Oh, shit! I paused this five seconds in. Currently reading Leviathan Wakes, and I'm almost halfway through it. Will come check these out as soon as I'm done. I can't believe you're doing a series on The Expanse!! SO COOL!
Thank you so much for doing The Expanse. This is my 3rd favourite show beside GoT and Westworld.
On minute 1:59 I love how the pot is so freaking high tech with a screen that is heat resistant but is being cooked using traditional fire
I can't say I've ever heard of this book series or show but it looks very exciting. Well thought out and with plenty of potential.
Cheers Alt Shift X!
Well don't dally. It's better than you will imagine.
I read the books and watched the show. The Expanse is one of very few tv shows that lives up to, and even improves on the books, which are also excellent.
This actually got me convinced to buy The Expanse rpg.
Might as well look into the series.
Even though I've read all the books and watched all the Seasons three times, I still feel I've learnt something by watching this! Great Job and Keep it Up! Thanks for keeping the flame of the Expanse burning strong.
Thanks for introducing me to the show, just binged watched season 1 & 2 on Amazon.
They are probably the best books i have read in years. It is such a well crafted world. And the tv show is such a good rendition of the books
While I love Star Trek, this is the best space opera I have ever seen on TV.
"Till the rains fall hard on Olympus Mons!"
I agree. It's the only space opera I've ever seen. Other than reading them.
So just started watching this series... THANKS... I should have watched this first... YOU DID A GREAT JOB.
I'm so crazy about these books (and the television series is so well adapted) - great job breaking down the basic concepts. I wish my dad was still around. He would have loved this.
So happy you are gonna be covering this awesome and as yet under-popular series!
“in combat ships might go five or six gs”
Laconia: *gas* *gas* *gas*
Probably the best primer on the world of The Expanse I've ever seen! Well done!
I LOVE The Expanse :)
It's great that you making video about it. :)
This is such an amazing primer for the series. I recommend it to all non book readers getting into the show. One suggestion: Switch out those Mars drawings with a couple of screens from S4.
Avasarala is the best!
She's also the only character that feels right on the TV adaptation
Miller's hat is my favorite character.
@@AlphaMike-vh3wx Keeps the rain of my head.
she flubs her lines a lot.
She is the ying to cercei's yang.
I've seen s1 & s2 - this has vastly increased my appeciation of them
This is a Science Fiction that does its best to ground it to realism.
The best series since game of thrones. Amazing, thanks for a truly magnificent sci fi.
I don't know what to say other then I freaken love this channel!
Thank you so much! You picked my new favorite show. Really looking forward to future videos!
Bro ngl your videos, even though they are 3 yrs old. I can’t help but watch how throughly you explain things. You are the best kind of trailer/promotion for the shows. No fluff just creative explanations!! Keep it up 👍🏽
YES! More content on The Expanse! I love your work.
HIGHLY recommend this show to anyone who reads this, absolutely brilliant (barring a mediocre performance from one actor imo)
Which one? I'd like to know.
Who?
It's the best Sci Fi since Star Trek for me personally, beats Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Babylon 5 ect.
the woman who plays gunny the martian. Can't stand her, especially in the second season
the woman who plays gunny the martian. Can't stand her, especially in the second season
thank you so much for this. i was just a casual viewer so didn't know all the history and meanings behind the show. i can't wait to see more from you on this
I'd love to see more about The Expanse on your channel.
such a great video to watch before the show. had no idea what was going on and watched this, now it’s crystal clear
Please do more of this type of video - introducing TV series without spoilers.
Its about time you picked this awesomeness
Alt Shift X + Expanse? Sounds like dream come true.
Alexander Fawkes it is for now, functionally perfect for myself and many others.
I just finished the latest audiobook, and I've already preordered the next one.
This series is the best original sci-fi in decades in my opinion, and I'm very glad to see it gaining traction.
I've been listening to the books since the first releases hit Audible, and I'm sure I'll be a fan for life.
The best sci-fi series so far.
Dude, never watched Expanse, but since GoT is over i would like to catch up with your work, and I will watch it.
