I have a few fountain pens, and I'll start with the bad ones. The Conklin Mark Twain pen I bought in Kansas City leaked, filled poorly, and I got rid of it after a year. The Waterman pen I bought wouldn't write without a lot of coaxing and cursing, and I traded it in for a Cross Classic Century, which I still have and use. I have a Parker Desk Set pen from 1929, and it is lovely. The bladder dried up, was replaced, and dried up again, so it is a 'dip and write' pen now. Love it. The pen I use every day, love writing with, and always know exactly where it is is the Aurora Afrika fountain pen. It was a bit pricey, but is one of the best purchases I ever made. It feels so good in my hand, writes beautifully, and looks brilliant.
Merry Christmas from Romania ! Welcome back and I'd like to thank you. It was your review that sealed the deal for me and I now have a Pelikan M805 Stresemann on the way from Cult Pens. So thank youuuuu !
I’ve been slowly going through my collection, writing with each of my pens, and I find myself reaching most often for two very different pens. First, for everyday use, is my Karas Kustoms Ink in copper with a fine titanium nib - a very heavy pen and the wettest nib I own aside from my Pelikan M1000; I love that it’s rather springy too and can give my writing a bit of extra character. The second is at the opposite end of the spectrum: a vintage Waterman’s 52 with a 14-kt nib that is a true “wet noodle.” I’m still learning how to use it properly, but even so, the character and expression it gives my writing is a joy (if you can get past the illegibility of my handwriting, that is!) I don’t generally take that one out of the house, due to its age and fragility, but for correspondence it’s one of my must-haves.
I don't celebrate these holidays but I wish peace and happiness to everyone. Please keep your videos coming, I love your style of presentation.. As a long-time subscriber I am hooked.
Does religion even matter? I'm an atheist. Christmas is just awesome xD I don't give two hoots about all the baby Jesus nonsense. Santa > Jesus ^_^ Apart from the name, there's nothing religious about what I do at Christmas. Christmas tree & (non religious)decorations, presents, roast dinner, drinks, family, etc. etc.
Happy Holidays, Pens & Tea! I really enjoyed the review of your favs for 2017. I have the Pilot Custom 823 (Amber) & Pelikan m800 in my collection, & they are both my favorite pens. My Sailor 1911 large (M nib) & Edison Menlo (18 k 1.1 stub) are right up there, too. Thanks!
All really cool pens. The only ones I don’t have in my own beloved collection are the Pilot Custom 823 and the Parker Duofold. Both are worthy pens I’d love to buy sometime this year. Great to find a female pen aficionado for a change on a UA-cam channel. And a really engaging, fun video from start to finish. Kudos for that. I subscribed straight away. My own top 5 at present are: (in random order) : Visconti Divina Elegance Montegrappe Fortuna Copper Mule Sailor 1911 Pro Gear Conid Bulkfiller Conway Stewart Wellington
The overlap between your favs/ honorable mentions and my personal favs is almost frightening. A special gift for me this Christmas was the Pilot Custom 823, joining my Platinum 3776, Pelikan M800 (tweaked soft fine italic nib -- wonderful!), Aurora Optima (green) I've had for years and two Lamy 2000's (EF and B). Love 'em all!
I like different pens for different things; Pilot Metropolitan for my planner. Dropper converted Platinum Preppy or Nemosine Singularity for Morning Pages (3 pages). Platinum 3776 Fine that stays at my desk for work. Those are my basics. HAPPY Christmas & New Year! :-)
Your Platinum #3776's are in shockingly good condition! I've had one in SF that I've used as my daily workhorse for about a year and a half, and I certainly can't say it looks like new. But the fact that it still writes like new is the bit that counts ;)
I must admit, having a wide selection of Parker pens, from the 1940's thru' to present day, the Ivory Duofold is a very handsome scribe - I may have to source one for myself; generally, not a fan of white finishes, but that's a real show stopper. Delightful post - keep it up, Kerry !!
Nice collection! I wish the 823 came in a finish I liked because it is a wonderful pen! My L2K goes with me every singe day! Also would really like to see more videos on pen accessories and general pen related stuff. I am happy with my pens, would like to refine the way I carry and store them!
Gaaah! I'm waiting to get my Pilot Custom 823. A friend bought a black one, so he doesn't think he needs the amber one. So he gave it to me as a gift. It's good to have rich spoiled friends when you're unemployed! :) My absolute current favourites are Pilot Custom 74, Lamy 2000, my Platinum #3776 Century's and my Waterman 52 wet noodle. Thanks for all the great videos!
You have excellent taste. The are all holy grails practically. You've lined up my future list of pen purchases lol. I might have to take the risk and add a Visconti Homosapiens with the Lava finish.
rlv: If you haven't done it yet, you will probably enjoy Visconti Bronze Age. I have one with a F nib, but should perhaps should have gone with a M. I create marginalia in books when I read, so F is good for that, especially on pages that may bleed, but I also write a lot of letters on good quality paper. Sometimes I think the F nib on that paper is too thin.
Regarding Omas, some of the ex employees have produced a pen called the “Scribo” which was produced for a shop in the UK called Write Here in a limited edition of 50 pieces only. I was lucky to purchase one and it is stunning. Merry Christmas and a healthy 2018
Hey, great video - do you mind sharing what paper are you using? I am trying to figure out if I want Pilot 823 in F or M and M on your paper looks just right width that I enjoy.
No one here has mentioned the Namiki/Pilot Falcon. I have 3 of them, a F, a M, and a B. Although they are a bit small for my hand, I love the amount of springiness in the nibs. And, as converter pens they are exceptionally easy to clean. Recently I got a silver Cross Peerless 125. I think it is ugly (as I do all Cross pens) because of the caps, but it is a delightful writer. The nib is rated F, but it writes M/F. My fascination with fountain pens goes back to 1985, so I have collected quite a few. I don't really "collect" FPs. Every one I buy gets used, and I don't buy pen pouches or protectors; the pens are not bought as "investments." Initially I hated FPs, because in high school we were REQUIRED to use them to take tests or for papers that had to be turned in. I still have one of the scratchy-stainless nibbed F Sheaffer cartridge pen. It has a transparent red barrel, and you could get 'em for a dollar each at the school book store.
Thank you Kerry for the fine video and sharing your opinions. My GT EDC’s these days have been [1] Bluestem SawWhet Cypress F/M, [2] FPR Indus both M and B, [3] Pilot Prera Solid Gray F, [4] Noodlers Ahabs with Anderson Pens 1.1mm stub and Noodlers no flex B [5] Shaffer Pop M [6] Esterbrook ‘New” Model J, M [7] Bluestem Cedar Exec F. Of your top 5 I do own a Lamy 2000 M and really prize it! Question: you mentioned ‘cabin up north’, do yo use no-freeze inks? (Noodles offers them). Seasons Greetings to you....now for a sip of tea......ahhhh.
I'm a newbie to fountain pens and also drink tea so I really enjoy your videos. I was wondering about the little book where you had your pens and inks listed. What is it called and where can I find it? Thanks!
Hi Kerry, thanks for all your reviews, hope that you will keep doing more. I have a question regarding the Parker Duofold: It has a golden ring on the top part of the grip section, beside the nib. I have had pens with a golden ring in that part of the grip section: Parker Sonnet (the older version with black resin grip section) and Waterman Expert. In both of them when filling the pens, at least in my case, those golden rings get wet of ink. Over the time, those rings get dirty, hard to clean, and may even rusty (it happened to my Waterman Expert). I wonder if that has ever happened to you, or if you take special care in cleaning that ring each time after filling. Or maybe you just don't dip the pen so much into the ink bottle, keeping the ring out of the ink (this would definitely be hard for me to do). Thanks.
I will definitely keep making them 👌🏼 It hasn’t ever happened to me but I haven’t used mine enough to have this happen (most likely). Have you tried an ultrasonic cleaner?
Crazy because the Lamy 2000 just made my top 5 list, the Pelikan M800 still fights for its number 1 spot with some new contenders (namely the Pilot 823)
Great line up. I can't quite commit to the Platinum 3776 F because I do not like toothiness-but am worried that the M will be too broad for me (based on a bad experience with a Pilot Custom 74). I use my Lamy 2000 daily, but regret buying an XF instead of a F (newbie mistake). Happy holidays and I look forward to another year of your videos.
We seem to have very different taste in pens, I generally love mine extra-fine and dry :) Still enjoyed watching this video, a lot! My fave pen of 2017 was the Namiki Falcon with a soft, extra-fine nib.
Teamhonn My Lamy 2000 has a very juicy medium nib, which writes more like a broad just due to ink flow. If you generally tend to prefer a thinner line, you’d probably prefer a fine nib. For comparison, my Lamy 2000 m writes the same as my Platinum 3776 b.
ThatLoganChick thanks for the reply. My lamy pens mostly have m nibs so I will probably get one in the 2000. Can you reverse write with it when you want a fine line say for underlining something?
Teamhonn I’ve never tried, as that’s not something I do. Have you watched Kerry’s original review of the Lamy 2000? She generally tests out reverse writing.
Thanks for the list. What about the ink-pen that you are using? I find quiet useful to know when the pen was inked with which ink Is it a custom made or did you by it somewhere?
I just scored my third 3776 for Christmas. Soft fine. Great writers. I have some of these others, and would be hard pressed to narrow it down to just 5. LOL
Great choices, looking forward to all your videos in 2018. Also when will a company do a limited edition dr who pen , I think from a design standpoint ideas would be endless. I’m only thinking of this because I just watched the Xmas special lol
I got that same Pelikan M805 last summer, and what a disappointment it was. I had a lot of trouble just getting it, and it turned out to have a lousy nib. Hard starting, skipping, rough and dry. After spreading the tines and using micro-mesh and mylar it's pretty good, but I haven't used it all ever since. I got a Visconti Blue Divina Elegance Maxi and it had twisted tines and the nib had to be replaced; it's fine now but I don't use it either. I don't seem to have very good luck with the more expensive pens. Funny how I've had no problems with cheap Chinese pens, lol.
I love those pens like that Pilot 823 that has a a big ink reservoir like that, I wish more pens used the whole pen body to store ink instead of a small cartridge, which doesn't last too long. Also wish less pens had screw caps, much prefer a nice click ^_^
What ink do you use in the Platinum #3776? I have bought and sold this pen twice because I couldn't get the ink to flow well. It would run so dry. I cleaned the nib, feed and made sure that the tines are not pressed too tight together. But no matter what ink I put in it, it was dry and at times just stop writing. I used Sailor, Waterman, Montblanc and Iroshizuku inks, which are all well behaved inks and nothing seemed to work well in this pen. I am not sure what it is with this pen but each of the two I owned had this problem.
I’ve used a whole array of inks before, including some of the brands you mentioned and haven’t had an issue. I do tune my nibs to write a bit on the wet side so that helps. Out of the box though all of my platinum pens were decent flow.
finally! ive been waiting for your top list ^_^ this year i think i fell in love with my most recent acquisitions: lamy safari petrol green, pilot vanishing point crimson sunrise, visconti HS bronze age (which has been inked continuously for close to a month now!), and mabie todd's swan 1500. but one of my earliest acquisitions still makes it to my 2017 favorites list: platinum 3776 chartres blue :) this was my first "grail" pen, and because of that, will always be my sentimental favorite too :)
I love your videos and your too 5 are impressive I guess I’d have to say my top 5 for 2017 are my montblanc exupery with a ob nib and my platinum president tuned by Dan smith om and my classic pen Lb5 md and Jupiter and lastly a vintage green demo pelikan stub Merry Christmas Kerry
Such a shame what happened to Omas :/ That aurora looks gorgeous! My new favorite, it writes like a dream with a 1551 nib, is my first vintage pen an esterbrook j in blue. Although I won't be getting a new pen next year (have to stop buying things I don't need XD) I might slowly save up for one in red. Happy holidays!
Indeed. I treasure the 2 Omas pens that I have. (Especially the Ogiva Arco Celluloide, as that one was a limited edition.) But I guess, in a way they all are limited editions now. :-(
Oh my goodness I can't wait till I can afford my first fountain pen I just loved your video, I think my first affordable one will be a Lamy Safari I hear they're really reliable
Nancy Mccormick- that is what I started with and really like them. You can get a gift pack with lots of different ink color. Medium and fine nibs seem about the same. The lamys just seem to work and easy to play with different nibs.
I like your personal style of reviewing these pens but was surprised to hear that the OMAS got edged out slightly from your top 5 list because you couldn't disassemble it for cleaning. The section unscrews easily to clean and I've successfully cleaned and dismantled my Ogiva Cocktail Vodka Lemon (including piston to remove some ink that went behind the piston). I don't touch the nib of course, but I use a bulb syringe to flush it out thru the little hole in the ebonite feed.
I have a few fountain pens, and I'll start with the bad ones. The Conklin Mark Twain pen I bought in Kansas City leaked, filled poorly, and I got rid of it after a year. The Waterman pen I bought wouldn't write without a lot of coaxing and cursing, and I traded it in for a Cross Classic Century, which I still have and use. pretty standard top of the line daily writers all. Very different from the likes of Visconti and other "jewelry" pens
Thanks for your reviews-I appreciate your style and assessment every time!
You can disassemblr the Omas completely and it is a very well cleanable fountain pen. I am having two of it and clean them frequently. Cheers.
Do you need any tools for this? I’ve researched how to disassemble the ogiva alba and they all have tools

Tomoe River paper💕
love your videos!
I have that same pen and nib. Mine will have a slow start occasionally, too, but I use the blue ink it comes with.

The Pelikan M1000 is my personal number 2. (Love the size and that huge soft nib. Nice line variation.)

I just scored my third 3776 for Christmas. Soft fine. Great writers. I have some of these others, and would be hard pressed to narrow it down to just 5. LOL
The Parker looks like the smaller "International" edition. The Centennial is the same design but a larger pen.
Merry Christmas to you little buckaroo thank you for your reviews I like Pilot also some pens are art 12/12/2018
Merry Christmas!
Fantastic choices. I liked the video very much and subscribed to your channel. Wish you very happy new year...
Gold nibs have a character
I love those pens like that Pilot 823 that has a a big ink reservoir like that, I wish more pens used the whole pen body to store ink instead of a small cartridge, which doesn't last too long.
Also wish less pens had screw caps, much prefer a nice click ^_^

The platinums are good pens, especially if you use waterproof inks.
finally! ive been waiting for your top list ^_^
this year i think i fell in love with my most recent acquisitions: lamy safari petrol green, pilot vanishing point crimson sunrise, visconti HS bronze age (which has been inked continuously for close to a month now!), and mabie todd's swan 1500. but one of my earliest acquisitions still makes it to my 2017 favorites list: platinum 3776 chartres blue :) this was my first "grail" pen, and because of that, will always be my sentimental favorite too :)
Pilot custom 823 is my edc and my favorite pen
M.C. Wynn did u drop it?
I love your videos and your too 5 are impressive I guess I’d have to say my top 5 for 2017 are my montblanc exupery with a ob nib and my platinum president tuned by Dan smith om and my classic pen Lb5 md and Jupiter and lastly a vintage green demo pelikan stub
Merry Christmas Kerry
You couldn't ink the Platinum for the video? I'm noticing a trend here. Ciao.
Could I know more about the little booklet that you have with the names and inks of each pen?
It is called “inky fingers” I’ve done an entire review on it before if you want to check it out!
Matt from the Pen Habit creates them
great taste gal!
Is that sticker on the Pilot C823 cap removable?
I might have missed it in the vid, but what is the ink you've used in the omas?
Do u like tee?
Robert Oster Peppermint or Spearmint in the OMAS?
Peppermint
Such a shame what happened to Omas :/
That aurora looks gorgeous!
Happy Christmas from Wales .
Pilot, Parker, Platinum, Pelikan....does anyone else feel the need to p?
Merry Christmas from Toronto!
The lamys just seem to work and easy to play with different nibs.
where did you get your desk?
IKEA about 4 or 5 years ago
what were you doing in inuvik?
Just visiting, I like to travel a lot!
is it ok to ask what you do for a job? you have very expensive hobbies, is that bad of me to ask?
Great video! My picks for the top pens of the year are almost the same. It would be great if you'd organise a giveaway too 😊
Stay tuned 👌🏼
What are the odds... I have a Lamy 2000 "M" filled with Diamine Achient Copper 😊
Cut to the chase: it's a Top 3 list, with 2 runners-up. List of pens seen at 15:23
Love your cursive
Can we put "visconti homosapien" in this list? i am just suggesting the pen. Btw ur videos are awesome :).
thank you
Merry Christmas
I like your personal style of reviewing these pens but was surprised to hear that the OMAS got edged out slightly from your top 5 list because you couldn't disassemble it for cleaning. The section unscrews easily to clean and I've successfully cleaned and dismantled my Ogiva Cocktail Vodka Lemon (including piston to remove some ink that went behind the piston). I don't touch the nib of course, but I use a bulb syringe to flush it out thru the little hole in the ebonite feed.
All the pens in the world will not improve your writing if you are not willing to give up bad habits
I gave up smoking and my handwriting improved immensely.
