And finally husband & Dad loses the respect of entire family that once was. And this is so sad. ( I stayed in a loveseat marriage so our only son would have a father figure). My husband told me and entire family - no love there. I was stupid, listened to my sense of belonging stupidly. Being an educated person w / no common sense.

A bad apple not falling far from the tree... Have noticed how if a child choose to indentify with behaviour of a rotten parent; what they do, is as if using a megaphone compared to what the parent had gotten up to. It's almost as if the parent is reaping what they had sown through being punished through the child.

I gave up what could’ve been a really great career to have kids and worked lower level jobs, as he wasn’t working much. I kept us afloat paid off the house, invested…..I was always exhausted as I also ran the household cooked and took care of most chores. Years later I got cancer, couldn’t work or cook, so he left for another woman and turned my own children against me. He started a litigative divorce trying to get as much of my money as possible. Even with my cancer being chronic and incurable. The divorce has been going for 6 years now, since he’s super greedy… and now I’m on SSDI since I wasn’t employed at any good firm, nor had subspecialized like I originally had wanted. So I’m dirt poor, but did have 3 kids…that he manipulated against me, all three were made to believe I was the problem, although he led a double life on the side. So yeah real bad outcome for me, but I’m happy he’s not in my house. Yeah I’m keeping the house….just trying to keep as much as I can. I’ve already spent over $130k on various lawyers. So in the end I have no good career, no family either….so yes I agree, not worth giving up a career to have a family. Maybe modify a bit, but not totally give up like this mom did. Awful…to find out your spouse of 25 years has been hiring hookers. How absolutely awful! That was the tragic part of the movie. The dad can just find a new woman to deceive. Claire will grow up and go back to school or something. Ben has his relationship and school. All will be fine except the mom.

@@Invaluable1 When women are repressed by a controlling and manipulative man, they don't realize what is happening to them and around them. In a way, they are on survival mode. They are living in a castle of lies and illusion. It takes time, some really good, honest friends, and therapy for them to be able to wake up and see what is really happening. There are countless families in this situation, and it's been going on for millennia. This movie was made almost 3 decades ago, and back then, there wasn't much knowledge of relationships dynamics for the majority of people. Now it's no longer tabooed to share such things, to discuss such things, and we can make better choices with vast sources of information and support. In this story, the mom realized her mistakes and started the healing immediately. But often times in real life, situations of unfaithfulness, abuse, and neglect can go on indefinitely and get passed down to the next generations. That is what a dysfunctional family is.

The FATHER is the Patriarch of the family; and HES the one who wrecked it. He could have recovered the family unit by:
    1. Calling a family meeting in which he admits his error; FULLY apologizes to all family members for what he did and how it impacted them.
    2. Declaring and avowing he will NEVER do something like that again, and MEAN IT and KEEP IT.
But, by doing nothing, using smoke/mirrors/aggression he expects to have the forgiveness of the family by money or placating them. when that doesnt work either, he puts his career in his drivers seat of his own blunderbus, then wonders why everyone deserts him. He could have invested in a family counsellor if he didnt have the brains/balls to fix this himself, but NO he didnt do that either. My hubby has a famous saying : Admit it, fix it, move on. simple but effective. This father couldnt even get to the first step of it.

The Mom said she, the daughter and father did wrong. She spoke to the Dad about it first about her Role. Then discussed it with her daughter the day she went and got her to take the dog to his Final visit to the Vet. *The Problem was that she let the Dad take over. He was actually the Problem with that Family.* Did you not watch the Movie? I'm Glad she got Rid of the Problem. Now all is well.

Thought-provoking. Real and honest. Husband's infidelity hurting a perfect family, the elephant in the room, the wife always the last to know. Why??!! Is it so difficult to choose between lasting and temporary happines? Why lie and manipulate instead just to get the best deal for him - his thriving career, a compliant loving wife, perfect family. She's a strong loving wife who sacrificed a lot for the family. The last to know, true. A story with the RIGHT ENDING. HEALING and HAPPINESS will follow.

At the end Mother, daughter, and son seen very clearly for the first time who the father is. The daughter knew but didnt realize how bad off he was. He dont have a care feeling for his wife, daughter, son. The only care he has is for him self. He lacks all the feels it takes to think about another person.

Horrible Father who caused the Break down of the Family and daughter's behavior. All was well in the end thanks to the Mom who did not give up on her Children and even tried to keep the marriage together. The Dad was the problem and Mom admitted to making the mistake of letting him take over the Family and ruining things. A lot of Men CANNOT LEAD.
