Great show, men. I’ve always enjoyed this album. I used to play the CD all the time, at my record store job, at the time of its release. Word on the street was that there might not be anymore Rush albums due to Neil Peart’s losses. Therefore, the majority of diehard Rush fans were starved for new music from their heroes. I was no different and immediately glommed onto this album.
I like the fact that My Favourite Headache is different from “that classic Rush sound.” Any Rush fanatic worth their salt knows that the boys in the band were always influenced by other types and genres of music. (Signals, anyone?) So the timing and era of its release is reflected in the overall sound and recording. Post grunge-ish? Stripped down and less cluttered? More rock and less progressive? Do l miss Alex and Neil? Yes, to all the previous questions. But, that’s why this album HAS a distinct sound: different collaborators. The Minkman and Matty bring a unique vibe, flavor and influence to Geddy’s sound and style. It makes for a nice contrast with Rush’s usual brand of bombastic, virtuoso type playing.
Adding this into the whole larger Rush catalog, My Favourite Headache is not top five or even ten, but l enjoy it more than Vapor Trails and Snakes & Angels. That’s just my personal take. My fave songs are the title track and “Working at Perfekt.” I always thought the “k” might be a nod to King Crimson, or more likely, just Geddy being Geddy. Rush had so many inside jokes and nicknames (like Lerxst), so perhaps this is just another one of those.
    Keep up the stellar work.
    Cheers from The Big Apple.
Rock Out, Prog On and Pogo!
    Your pal and mine,

Hey bicyclelegs! I have a bunch of your non-Rush stuff queued up to watch too, but of course Rush related things get priority 🙂
I wasn't super high on either Geddy's or Alex's solo records at the time of their release but I've really come around on this one. Lots of great stuff, and as Ryder noted there's a significant carry-forward of some things Geddy was trying here on Vapor Trails and (especially) Snakes and Arrows. Alex's record Victor is much weirder (it's kind of like Primus at times, except with drum machines and keyboards) but also has elements that carried forward into the post-hiatus Rush albums.
Alex's current project Envy of None is really interesting. It's like mid-90s Garbage (Butch Vig and Shirley Manson), and a little bit of Pretty Hate Machine-era Nine Inch Nails. Very much a "light industrial" vibe.

I’ve had a few people recommend Envy of None to me. And I have to say your description of Victor actually has me intrigued! You’ll get to find out what I think of Victor next month.
