Welcome to the next episode of my series In Defence Of. Today Tom Curless from Curlesania joins me to defend Led Zeppelin’s 1979 studio album In Through The Out Door. Can't rank the whole catalogue as there is 3 albums I haven't listened to including satellites and their last 2. I Would probably have the debut, Wild Planet and Cosmic Thing as my top 3 not sure on exact order always find it hard to order things like this. Great band and video they have been growing on me allot over the last couple of years and after repeat listens.

    Another sterling show, Mista ‘legs! For a proggy, froggy rocker such as “I Palindrome I,” l love The Beefers! Luckily, I’ve even seen them live in concert. It was an indoor show, in the round, with Squeeze. The B-52’s had the crowd up and dancing for the bulk of their set. Really enjoyed them live! Besides “their great eight,” I’d like to give some love to a song tacked onto their greatest hits compilation from the early 2000s: “Hallucinating Pluto.” Whaddya think 🤔 of that track, me ol’ mucker?! My usual spiel of thoughts on each album: 1. Fe Maiden ~ What a rockin’ album, bro! “Rime” is epic, man. What a record!! 2. “Slappy” Browne ~ Yeah, it’s a good album. Been a wee bit since a coworker played it at the record store. Probably haven’t heard it in a decade maybe… since Mr. Creepo popped the CD on. 3. TMBG ~ Another album l ain’t heard in ages, since Cap’n Plaid used to play all his CDs by The Two Johns at the shoppe! “Snail 🐌 Shell” is a tasty 🤤 morsel. 4. Stranglers ~ A band l know very little by. I really should know more by them. Waitaminute! I know “Nuclear Device!” I even recall the video, great tune. 5. Deppy Pesci! ~ Looking at the track listing, l know half of the album. Cool synth-pop/rock. 6. Marillo! ~ Except for the first single, “Hooky,” a really excellent album. Also the first tour l ever saw by them. Great memories all around. 7. T4F ~ Oooo, yeah! 🎵”This is the Year of the Knife!”🎵 🔪 8. The Beagles! ~ Quite possibly their greatest release. Much better than The White Album. 😜 Bwhahahahahahahaha! I couldn’t resist. Sorry/not sorry. I hear your cat(s?) in the background here. 9. The Go’s ~ Yes, l know who they are from the ol’ record shoppe daze. Ain’t heard ‘em in decades. Sorry, laddie! 10. Debbie!! ~ Love that album! I recently did a top ten songs show on Blondie on another channel and l had A LOT of picks from Eat to the Beat. Some killer deep tracks, indeed! Indubitably! Another fully filmed show in fine form and fettle. Cheers from The Big Apple. 🍎 Rock Out, Prog On & Pogo! It’s my mantra and my logo. Great list and show, Daniel! Thank you for the shoutout! You're right, there a ton of great albums having an anniversary this month. Powerslave is a fantastic album and is my favorite from Iron Maiden. As you know, I was late to the party on Jackson Browne but I love Late for the Sky. I have only started to get into the Stranglers during the last year having picked up their Original Album Series collection. I listened to The Raven this week and I like it a lot. I am definitely going to dig deeper into their catalog. Well, what more can we say about The Seeds of Love? And ditto for Abbey Road, my favorite Beatles album. Cheers! Here are 10 more (I could have had 20 and George mentioned 3 of those that I replied to in his comments): 1969: The Band - self-titled second album 1969: Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul 1974: Herbie Hancock - Thrust (just did a show on this on my channel!) 1974: Frank Zappa and the Mothers - Roxy & Elsewhere 1979: Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East 1984: Dokken - Tooth and Nail 1984: Queensryche - The Warning 1994: Sugar - File Under: Easy Listening 1994: R.E.M. - Monster 2004: Arcade Fire - Funeral

    Hello Guys: Great discussion. I am with Bicyclelegs about 75% of the way here. TSMR is a great album but a few tracks such as Sing This All Together (See What Happens) and Gomper sound directionless and, yeah, Peter, kinda boring. About half the album belongs on a playlist: Citadel; In Another Land (love the vocals, actually); 2000 Man; She's a Rainbow; The Lantern; and, of course, 2000 Light Years From Home - the album's climax and defining statement. It was released in 1967 which I consider the greatest year ever for albums. I have TSMR as tied for tenth place - along with the Stones' other '67 studio album, Between the Buttons.

    Total Devo definitely gets an unwarranted amount of disdain from spuds and casual listeners alike, and i really think there's some strong parts here and there. I genuinely *love* Plain Truth and I'd Cry If You Died. Those two songs had no right being as beautiful as they are. Also, some of the tracks have nearly industrial sounding songs that fit right in with the late 80s cyberpunk aesthetic. Baby Doll, Some Things Never Change, and even Agitated. Definitely agree on Disco Dancer by the way, especially the 12" remix version.

  • @telophasemusic
    @telophasemusic 14 днів тому

    New Traditionalists is tied with their first album for me. Its just full of barely repressed anger and menacing synthesizer work. The lyrics are brilliant and i absolutely love Going Under. Sadly, it's also the beginning of the end of Alan's monster drumming. The sinister synth sound would continue with Oh No, which itself is killer. Honestly, theres only three albums by Devo that arent as strong as the classic five. SNM, Total, and Shout And even then, those have some high points here and there Duty now, spuds!

    Thanks for having me on again, bicyclelegs! One thing l neglected to mention was a little more backstory on Edwin and I Mother Earth. They’re also known as IME - for short - and have four studio records from 1993-2003. Their debut album, Dig, features Edwin on vocals and is a Platinum seller in Canada. THIS was the album l saw them tour in ‘94/‘95, that l mentioned during the show. (When IME opened for Dream Theater at The Manhattan Center in NYC.) Their follow up release, Scenery and Fish, also has Edwin singing on the album. This one hit number 10 on the Canadian chart, went Double Platinum in Canada and features some guitar work from Alex Lifeson on the song “Like a Girl.” Aha! The connection is made! Things became strained between the band members of IME and Edwin, so he left the group after the tour for the record. With a new vocalist in tow, the band released their third album, Blue Green Orange. It reached number 8 on the Canadian chart, yet only certified Gold. A gentleman you may know, namely one Geddy Lee, plays bass on the tune “Good for Sule.” The band soldiered on for one more album and then splintered for almost a decade. Nowadays, Edwin is back as the singer in I Mother Earth. There’s no new album yet, but they still play a lot of shows in Canada. They’re definitely worth checking out, for any fan of good, adventurous hard rock, often with a progressive type tinge to it. Edwin’s vocals are more melodic with I Mother Earth than they are on Alex’s Victor release. And no, l don’t work for the band. 😉 Cheers from The Big Apple. Rock Out, Prog On & Pogo! Your pal and mine, ~ The Unleaded, Shredded and Dreaded Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS. PS: Look for bicyclelegs, coming up this (Evidence of) Autumn, 🍂 on Cretin Classics!

    I'm not a fan of this group except for a few superb instrumental 'b' sides: The Numberer, The Pride & The Pain and Your Application's Failed. Do The Strand and All I Want Is You are quite groovy, too but in general I'm not fond of Ferry's histrionic vocal style. I do like a couple of solo tracks he did - 2 HB and Chance Meeting. We recorded a cover of the latter in 2022 which was fun to do.

      Yes and I've heard it. I prefer your version of I Am A Rock by Paul Simon but overall I prefer your own material. I think it's better for bands to write and record their own material. It's one of the reasons I become frustrated by Manfred Mann's Earth Band with all their cover versions, particularly because their own works tend to be superior than most of the cover versions...except when they do a cover of a Bob Dylan track. Something magical seems to happen to MMEB when they cover a Dylan number!

    I do admire and respect Paul Simon as a writer, probably the best song writer in America of the 1960s and 1970s. Our own group (UNIT) recorded a cover of I Am A Rock in 2022 because that is how I felt throughout the 1980s and we recorded it because it seemed to me if I'm going to be a miserable bugger then why shouldn't other people suffer as well? 7 O'clock News / Silent Night is one of the most hard hitting pieces I've ever heard.

    Ah, here we go then...I am a Jew...a proud Jew...so Waters can be wrapped in barbed wire, rolled down a hill and dumped in a sewer...first...then forced to listen to me trying to play the viola which, I assure you, is a far worse torture. The man is an absolutely vile and loathsome example of humanity and I fully endorse what Gilmore and his wife said / wrote about him. Mind you, I've never liked Pink Floyd's music much. The only exceptions are See Emily Play, Point Me At The Sky, One Of These Days and Money...that's about it. This is not a criticism of your video, though, which I found most informative.

      Yes, Roger Waters is a complete bigot. Does this mean we should boycott his music? Difficult to decide. I'm an Irish protestant so I don't have a dog in this race, in theory, but his comments about Jews I do find profoundly offensive. It does make it hard for me to listen to (for example) The Wall or any of his later material. For this same reason I can't listen to Richard Wagner, Carl Orff or Richard Strauss without feeling nauseated.

    It was our bassist / flautist who forced me to listen to prog rock and it was a track from this album - Toccata - that made me sit up and take non-classical music seriously. I already had in my collection the 1st Piano Concerto (1961) by Alberto Ginastera so I am one of the few people who heard the original work first and the ELP 'cover' second. The whole album would be a 10 out of 10 had they omitted Benny The Bloody Bouncer and shoved on the actual track Brain Salad Surgery instead. Despite that it is, for me, the best ELP album even though Trilogy comes a very close 2nd.

    YES! Finally a prog / classic rock channel that acknowledges singles. I enjoy singles because often they feature music slightly different or more 'off the wall' from what the groups record for their albums and this is often especially true for 'b' sides. Ashton, Dyke & Gardner - Delirium ('b' side of Can You Get It, a splendid jazz rock instrumental, the only track not reissued on CD unfortunately). ELP - Brain Salad Surgery ('b' side of Fanfare For The Common Man; it should have been on the album instead of Benny The Bouncer which is utter shite). Genesis - Twilight Alehouse ('b' side of I Know What I Like which should have been on the album instead of that poxy acoustic guitar valium ballad whatever it's called). King Crimson - Groon ('b' side to Cat Food, a lively and playful instrumental unlike any of the tracks on the album). A most interesting discussion even though many of the groups are new to me. As I've said elsewhere, I'm a classical music fan whose knowledge of progressive rock is very limited.

    I absolutely loathe and detest AC/DC. I know they're tremendous fun and they deserve their fame but I find them agonisingly BORING. They only ever wrote 2 songs - the fast one and the mid tempo one. There's just 1 number of theirs I do enjoy - Let There Be Rock - but only the 7" single edit. The Doors I also despise, mainly because I cannot tolerate that dreadful singer. They did record 1 number I like - their arrangement of the Adagio In G Minor by Reme Giazotto - on which that abysmal droning singer does not appear! Radiohead would be tolerable if they had a singer instead of that feeble caterwaul merchant who mumbles his way through their entire catalogue, most of which I've heard (unfortunately) because one of our guitarists really liked the group and tried to convince me they merited my attention. They don't! However, I really like Oasis but only from 1994 to 1997. I love the swaggering arrogance of working class lads from Manchester who annoy and irritate all those music journalists. It's odd, though, because musically one could accuse them of only writing 2 songs - the electric one and the acoustic one - and repeating that for umpteen singles and albums. I can't explain why their music appeals to me but it does...which is odd. I can understand perfectly why so many people despise them and certainly they do not deserve the almost gratuitous, ingratiating adulation they received from the media during the 1990s. Do they live up to the hype? No, definitely not...but I still love many of their tracks! Our bass guitarist tried (and failed) to convince me Guns & Roses merited my attention, too. It took me about 20 seconds to decide they are one of the worst bands in the world.

    Well, for me this is fairly easy...except for the top 3 which are liable to swap places every other week. 1 Octopus 2 Free Hand 3 In A Glass House 4 Three Friends 5 The Power & The Glory 6 Acquiring The Taste 7 Interview 8 Giant 9 Civilian 10 Giant For A Day 11 The Missing Piece I have to place a gap between 8th and 9th place because the final 3 albums are nowhere near as good as the previous 8, for me. However, a shout-out should be given to The Power & The Glory (single 'a' side) and Heroes No More (single 'b' side) which merit a mention. PS Scot Lade (The Prog Corner) needs to attend a class in which you educate him on hats because, so far, you're still a-head (groan). Mind you, his King Charles III number is almost as good as yours. There was a chap in early Jethro Tull who sported similar hats to yours...one of their bass players I think.

    Here we go again. Despite being in a pop group, until 2002 the only music to which I listened was classical (primarily baroque and 20th century). Then our bass guitarist / flute player, disgusted with my refusal to regard any other musical genre as anything but irrelevant, virtually forced me (bullied me - he was a pak mei kung fu adept) to listen to a single 75 minute CD of tracks by various 1970s progressive rock groups that he believed were essential to my musical education. With extreme reluctance I gave the disc a spin...which is how I had my first encounter with Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and ELP. I was in my 40s at the time. Our flute player (Cheung Yiu Munn, since you ask) was 18 years old...from Hong Kong. How the devil does an 18 year old bass guitarist from Hong Kong become acquainted with 1970s prog rock groups? Anyway, this meant it took a Chinese teenager to introduce me to part of my own culture. Daft I call it. However, I and I alone am responsible for discovering Gentle Giant. It took about 3 days for me to decide they were The Greatest Group In The World and nobody could convince me to alter my opinion. To this date they are still The Greatest Group In The World. Earlier this year I discovered The Prog Corner and, by extension, Spinning Prog and Harold's Prog Rock Show, 3 You Tube channels I enjoy immensely. Then in my 'recommended' feed, this video appeared. I thought Scot Lade ruled the roost for prog rock presenters with hats...but your hat definitely beats his, much as it pains me to admit it. To judge from your accent, you're an Aussie...which is splendid. Australia gave us the best cricket team in the world (with the greatest batsman - Don Bradman - and the greatest bowler - Shane Warne) plus Aussie Rules Football which is absolutely bonkers - a punch-up in every match - splendid. Anyway, I've subscribed to your channel because a) you like prog rock, b) you like Gentle Giant, c) you gave Scot Lade a guest spot and d) you're the only You Tuber able to beat Scot in the hat league. For me, Gentle Giant released 8 utterly superb albums (from Giant to Interview) plus 3 mediocre discs that would be mildly impressive if released by a different group but for Giant I still find very disappointing. My top tracks from those would be For Nobody, Friends and Shadows In The Street. Asking me to pick top tracks from the previous 8 albums is simply impossible. I sat here and tried, honestly, I really did but (sigh) it can't be done. There is a Gentle Giant influence in some of our own more recent work but being a trio and being not nearly as proficient musicians as any of those monumental prog rockers, our complexity derives from the structures, harmonic and rhythmic language rather than instrumental virtuosity but in March we released our 53rd album so presumably we're doing something right. Anyway, thank you for providing me with another interesting YT channel. Andy Martin, the crap keyboard player from UNIT.

    The way I see it, while Satanic Majesties... has been viewed as a poor man's Sgt. Pepper, another viewpoint is its an album by a band trying to get back into the swing of things after certain members found themselves in trouble with the law over drug related matters (say all you want about Brian Jones, but Mick & Keith were closer to doing serious gaol time than Brian was in '67). Also, I don't know if having a rocker on there would've fit in with the rest of the album but Jumpin' Jack Flash more than compensated after Satanic Majesties... had had its day. Overall, one of the most experimental albums the Stones ever made but despite its share of great moments, not one I go back to often.

    Another excellent show, men! Mr. Kerr’s biting criticism of certain songs had me in stitches. So snarky, so funny. I laughed out loud a few times at his humorous comments. When bicyclelegs was talking about how Jagger and Richards have basically disowned the album, my first thought was KISS with Music From The Elder. When he said it a moment later, l exclaimed, “Yes, exactly,” out loud to no one in particular. I love the banter when you two get together. A great chemistry; reminiscent of “The Two Johns,” but VERY different. In a good way, though, NOT a bad one! Cheers from The Big Apple. Rock Out, Prog On & Pogo!
