Archer: Sweden's self-loading, rapid-fire artillery system explained
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 січ 2023
- The Archer Artillery System is in a class of its own with its ability to move and fire before an enemy can react.
Designed by BAE Systems, the Archer's simplicity and impressive rate of fire makes it a formidable opponent in battle.
Armed with an automatic loading 155mm howitzer, the system - currently being used by the Swedish army - can be deployed, fire and move off at speed, making it difficult for enemy forces to detect its location after it fires.

Sweden makes fantastic weapons. The CV90 is also very impressive

Now I know Kung Fu!
Superb bit of kit and another reason why Sweden should be in NATO...(Cough Turkey)
We can swop them😊
Yeah we need to just kick Turkey out of NATO.
Turkey has issues with Sweden not handing over some people they want to prosecute
We have laws in Sweden that we have to follow, no matter what an autharian dictator demands. Turkey on the other hand, have criminal gangleaders smuggling drugs and order murdes in Sweden, that is not put in jail.
@@blackterminal For burning a Koran?
The most impressive thing is that all the rounds hit ground at the same time (if you want) the computer calculate the round so even if they not shoot's away from the vehicle the same time, they will land at the enemy all at once. Meanwhile the vehicle already on it's way to new position.
Time on target was started in WW2, according to Ian V. Hogg. Modern self propelled artillery systems reduce the setup time and allow one gun to do a time on target shoot. The practice is at least 80 years old BUT the modern application via SP guns with automatic loading systems is a significant improvement.
@@michaelguerin56 I remember it being called Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact aka MRSI (pronounced "mercy")
Swedes sure do know how to make amazing feats of engineering. Love the country and its people 🇸🇪❤️
The core of the Systems comes from the british AS-90 Braveheart. That could achieve the same in the late 90's....
@@Andrew-Lee91 No it doesn't. It's based on an earlier Swedish gun (FH77) and development of Archer started before BAE had anything to do with Bofors
Now THAT is amaaazing. I mean that thing looks soo freaking concept sci-if in its design… BUT IT’S REAL.😲👌🏼
Aaaand... the crew never have to leave the armoured cabin during setup, firing, reload and departure.
I wonder if it comes with a 12v socket to run a coffee machine while they're waiting for the gun to "unload"?
@@geopolitix7770 that would not be possible. Brewing coffee on 12v is too slow need more power or more time. :)
@vilandar maybe good enough for a little nespresso shot?? The guys and gals can probably bring a thermos of hot water😎

@@vilandar use the recoil, waste heat and pressure from the barrel to brew some gnarly espresso.
The ability to put multiple rounds downrange in a hurry with a single weapon versus an entire battery or larger rounds cannot be overstated. A single artillery vehicle is easier to hide than an entire battery, too. For small countries facing a much larger enemy, the Archer is an equalizer.
It can't hold up against a concerted dron attack. Warfare has changed forever.
@@dlighted8861 No but there will be smart counter-measures against drones in the future which will make this vehicle extremely effecient if used in conjunction with that said smart counter measurements against drones.
@@dlighted8861 The drones would have to be in the air at the same time at the same place to locate and attack the Archer. It will fire and be gone within one minute.
Always been an extreme fan of the stuff Sweden makes and designs. This Archer Artillery System is another one for the books if it performs well in Ukraine, which I think it will.
BAE Systems AB is a British company and was awarded the contract to develop and manufacture Archer but Sweden pick their weapons systems very effectively
@@Gez492 Sorry, but it's a Swedish design and product. The English had nothing to offer the Swedes (apart from money) that's all. Swedish engineering. Same thing with the CV90, and the Gripen. Heck, the English can't even build their own fighter jets anymore. Also, the Germans had to be brought in to update their Challenger 2 tank, and their own developed service rifle with was atrociously bad. Not to forget their miserably lousy IFV they are wasting money on. Listen, leave it to the Swedes and the Germans. They have the know-how, the quality and the brains.

I think it’s actually a joint venture. If Sweden was so great why did they ask BAE to make it. Listen we are all on the same side here, it’s a great bit of kit. That’s all that matters. Soon the Russians will be finding out how good it is.
@@andrewstevenson9747 It's made by BAE Systems AB/Hägglunds. A Swedish defense company bought by BAE
Impressive bit of kit. We should be getting them for our lads and lasses
We are getting them. As of (05/04/23) the Uk now has 14 of these. All of which will be fully operational by April 2024. We have more on order which we arrive in the UK over the coming year(s). Very exciting for the British Army. Looks like a world-class bit of kit. I might even join the Royal Artillery next year to work on one of these.
Taiwan needs these ASAP
They didn't mention the use of different trajectories to ensure simultaneous time of arrival of all shells, which combined with other units spells annihilation to the enemy
There are other videos of Archer demonstrating this.
I think that is indeed one if its features but not a very new thing. Been around since WW1 to synch impact time. That said though, to do it within this narrow timeframe is nothing short of amazing! 🤩
Proper drive by shooting 👍
I can see Sweden gaining a lot more market share in the European defense industry with how Germany and Switzerland have been handling things ....
Why ? This is made by a London based company....

@@leifiseland1218you are so correct. In fact it is the reason why smaller countries can still produce state of the art weaponry. For example, the engine for the Saab Gripen is American, I believe the same as the Super Hornet. I’m Australian, and we have here many multinationals including BAE, Lockheed-Martin, Boieng Australia, Navantia, Thales, etc., all delivering locally specific products. Boeing Australia’s MQ-28 Ghostbat is just one example under development.

We need to crack the whip on both Hungary and Turkey to get both Sweden and Finland into NATO as soon as possible. Both nordic countries are expert at getting the biggest bang for the buck.
Since both Erdogan and Orban are deep in Putins pocket, wouldn't it be better to reform into a NATO 2.0 and exclude them?

Would have been good to see the whole timed timed fire mission including that last 20sec from last round to scoot. It’s a very big claim and shouldn’t have been skipped over like that.
Swedens been building artillery for 800 years. Don't you worry about this being real. With Excalibur it wouldn have been even longer.
Then go look at the original BAE footage that shows it.
@Retrosicotte agreed. Also it's a freaking ridiculous clip. Blows my mind!
There's a vid on UA-cam somewhere with the complete sequence.
UK just ordered 14. Should be 140!!
The Swedish are manufacturing artillery properly ✌️❤️🇬🇧 not persisting with inadequacy and inferior designs, good innovation
Whoa !! That is pretty cool! Send them!
An excellent piece of equipment developed by BAE, despite some initial teething problems. A multi national product with components from Norway, United States, Germany and Sweden of course, making it NATO compatible. Funded and marketed by BAE. The British army should acquire some of these.
The British army should acquire lots of these. As should every European country anywhere near Russia. And they should also all ensure domestic production of artillery shells on a scale that ensures that they have enough on hand for at least a couple of years of intensive fighting, while at the same time having production capacity sufficient foe having three of four years worth of ammo on hand after the initial year of fighting.
You managed to get the word BAE in there two times. Good job!
A product originally developed in Sweden for the needs of the Swedish army. Later acquired by BAE Systems.
very weird comment
The swedes seem very talented and produce outstanding war fighting equipment.
I'd estimate (from my head) we are top 3 in the world inventing and producing high-tech military grade systems
Amazing
As a french i love swedish weapons, they are very smart for their scandinavian environement
Another reason why the British Army, should be buying Sweden Military Hardwarw too.
Along with not just these new Archer SPH 155mm, but also buy the Swedish CV-90 IFV's too.
Which is much better, than the British Army non-working Ajax Armoured Vehicle Family.
T he MoD cannot get to work properly, or the MoD had already wasting Billions in Taxpayers money in the process too!
Instead of the Sweden just donating 50 CV-90 IFV's along with maybe upto 12 Archer SPH to Ukraine 🇺🇦!
Maybe the Swedish Government could think about, donating 100 CV-90 IFV's and 24 Archer SPH's too.
That is donated to the equally needy British Army, to help out the MoD too.
As the British Army has been deregulated to a Tier Two Army, within Nato now it seems, due to Conservative Defence Cuts since 2010 now!
Will the UK be sending any Ajax?
@@kristofferhellstrom I do hope the UK Government does not give the Ukrainians Ajax armoured vehicles, the reports are all bad on ajax vehicles.
The Ajax vehicles would be better off, giving them to the Russians.
Then Ajax vehicles can cause Russian Troops, to be made Disabled from operating them.
As the Ajax vehicles, has caused many British Soldiers to become Disabled, also these British Soliders have needing to be medically discharged from the Army, as a direct result too!
So when you consider, the British Army, only has around 14 working protypes or preproduction test vehicles.
Though hundreds of these Ajax armoured vehicles are in different stages of production, is very worrying to British Taxpayers.
With Ajax programme already costing, the British Taxpayers Billions of Pounds already too.
When the British MoD gets things wrong, they do in a big way and costing a Great Deal of Money in the Process too!

@@jonasmelander Thanks anyway, I already knew that 😃
Very very effective thing .
See that thing on the roof? Remotely controlled .50 caliber machine gun.
Omg.... 1:34... Imagine being on the receiveing end of that without any warning. (shots that misses the target)
The question remains - Will the Ukrainian crew and soldiers, for the Archers and CV90s, get the training and built-up experience they need to be able to use these systems to their fullest extent. The war in Ukraine, where both sides use more or less the same systems at the start, has shown in painful clarity how important training, experience, and morale are. I hope the trainers take the time and make a herculean effort to prepare the Ukrainian users for these systems. Without that, we can send them toys or the best war machines giving the same impact - non.
I guess it's also up the Ukrainians how much training they want. What training they need and want. But of course the more training they got the better it is. And then there's also the crew maintaining and reparing these things that will be Ukrainians. So lots of moving parts and people.
From what I have seen of the Ukrainians, they will use these systems better and more effectively than what we thought was possible in the first place.
From what I've read about the joint troop training efforts, even the mobilized Ukranians are super engaged in the training and it's been quite an eye opener for those delivering it.
I can only imagine how motivated the artillery troops would be getting their hands on this. Like kids in a candy store! And I'm 100% sure the Swedes would be delighted to assist.👍
It is all kept pretty hush-hush but as I understand, Ukrainian crews are undergoing a two- month training session on this system as we speak.
My guess is that this was all planned out and set into action before the deal was even publicly announced.
Anything else would be criminally stupid.
Chanses are we won't hear anything else of this before the archers show up on the battlefield.
A weapons system like this is vurnerable to sabotage and I don't doubt for a second that Russian agents are operating inside Europe an Ukraine.

Better suited for mud than a truck chassis too
What will the uk use to mount it on? Is there any prefered platform?

The ARCHER System is a very good one and with the german System Rheinmetal HX3 155mm nearly on same level. But I prefer the latest and better protected version of the BOXER Artillery-System (called RCH155). This is superior at the moment with some advantage. The RCH155 can fire during driving and this is outstanding. The protection is much better than the truck based Systems. But overall.... the truck based systems much cheaper and ARCHER is really high class. Much better than CAESAR
