Border Collie Herding Stubborn Cattle

- Driving a group of mostly unbroke cattle (including bulls, calves and pregnant heifers) across a field.
These cattle are challenging for a dog to work for a few reasons and will not hesitate to run a dog off as a group if they see an opportunity. But Hendrix did a good job being firm but fair in moving them and he got the job done in the end.
Hendrix is 3.5 years old in this video and really developing a clean, patient and calm style on cattle. We still have much to learn but are on the way.
Dang not only smart dog, that’s some good training. Great job
True. Tricks are one thing. Herding is a vocation for these dogs. They live for it! My Tess's grandson-and some others-became service dogs for some of their owners. Maxwell Smart-Max-became an agility assistance dog for a young girl with CP. He also predicted her seizures like Tess predicted my glucose highs and lows.
@@virginiaconnor8350 Wow, that’s pretty amazing.

The border collie is rated as one of the smartest of breeds.
I didn't realize how amazing border collies are until I inherited one from a friend. He was going crazy as a house dog, and taking everyone with him. It took him two weeks to sort out which side of the fence the animals are supposed to be on, how to keep them out of the garden if they escape, and to snitch on them so i'll come put them back. I didn't teach him any of it, he just watched how everything works and plugged himself in. It's mind blowing to see what he could be like if I knew how to train him like this guy.
Many border collies are more intelligent than their owners!
@@sapper82 He's definitely smarter than me. If I took him anywhere, he'd learn to drive.
@@highfive9835 your doggo sounds amazing! ❤
@@highfive9835😂😂😂
Best thing man made!
Border collies are amazing! I was checking this one guy's tractor, and he had a young border collie who was running all over the place, full speed, chasing his own shadow. The moment his owner called his name, the dog zoomed over and dropped at his feet. It was incredibly impressive.
They’re intelligent dogs but also people pleasers. I taught mine to shake when he was young but now it’s a comfort for him. When he wants love he puts his paw forward for me to hold and rub it. He’s a sweetie, unlike his younger brother, who’s a maniac.
My mates Border Collie Rosie would do the same thing! She is such a beautiful soul. When she was younger, she'd chase kangaroos and once the doe she was on ejected the joey from her pouch. Rosie picked it up and took it inside to lay it as gentle as she could in front of him. Unfortunately, the joey was really young and expired, but Rosie being the sweet girl she is tried her very best. She's much more a sleep dog than a sheep dog these days, the fat ol' darlin'!
@@jacobbaumgardner3406 lmfao my dog does this too. He was taught the same with 'shake' or 'paw' and now does it for the exact same reason haha.
Thanks for all the kind words and comments everyone -- really appreciate it. Have only had to remove one comment from some guy who didn't understand that australian shepherds and border collies have completely different working styles (he had no idea what he was talking about and kept trying to argue? lol).
Anyways, here's a quick update: Hendrix is now 5 years old and has a lot more miles and training on him than he did when this video was shot. He's since gone on to compete at the biggest cattle and sheep dog trials in the US and Canada. Will continue to post vids of his progress (and my new pup Lennon's) as time goes on!
Beautiful dog and training, really is a joy to see. Thank you for uploading!
Where are you located?
So what is the difference in working styles between aussies and bc's?
Genuinely curious, no idea about this
What a good boy.
Fabulous dog and owner
That's a brave dog! Not backing down against several thousand lbs of muscle outmatched. Not a signle flinch.
I know right? People talk about how smart they are, which is true, but when you consider they aren't large dogs it's very ballsy to try and intimidate cows.
I love how when you first say "That'll do," he looks back at you like, "Are you sure? I wanna keep going." So cute. Well done training him.
What an amazing teamwork! I am so impressed with the grit and heart of this dog. Just wow
I approve this message😊
Teamwork? The dog did all the work
Kkkkkkkkkkkㅋ ㅋㅋㅋ
@@larrydotson2625 Yeah, thats his job, the human taught him how and now he does it.
What incredible training! Respect. And here I was proud of myself for teaching my dog to sit and to give a high 5.
Same. Made me laugh !
Ah, but the _really_ clever dog is the one that trains you, without you noticing (to start with).
hopefully doggie gets a nice warm bath, a snack, and a fireside to curl up by.
Of course the dog deserves to be well taken care of, but there's a huge difference between a pet and a working dog.
No it has to stay outside and guard the animals.
@@White_Wrath That's a different breed of dogs' job. Great Pyrenees, for example are "guard dogs" that protect the livestock from predators. Border Collies and other herding breeds' job is moving the flock/herd.
A brisk towel rubdown and a warm place to chill out.
And a name😂
Just listen to this when you're going to sleep. It's like a self-affirmation and sleep aid in one. "Good boy, lay down, good boy lay down". I woke up feeling great.
That made me smile thanks for that haha
🤣😂
The dog is smarter than the master at h erring. If you allow the cattle to stop, they will turn and Investigate the limits of the dog every time. Cattle are curious, and the dog is a predator. You are putting the dog in danger by not allowing him to keep the cattle moving. The cattle aren’t stubborn they’re just being mishandled.
😂😂
This is a great video! Border Collies are highly intelligent, working dogs. If they are just a pet, they must be challenged mentally and need a lot of exercise. A close friend had one as a pet and lived in an apartment. They had like 50 toys for their dog and a unique name for each. The Border Collie knew the names of the 50 odd toys and could find the exact one on command. The dog got long walks and lots of time to run every day. It had a long happy life despite living in an apartment. ❤️Border Collies!
That's about what it would take. Border collies are so smart and high-energy they'd make themselves insane without an intense job to do.
You can build a pretty good agility course in a small space. I made one for an elderly couple who didn't understand their dog's need for this type of stimulation. It only took Joey three laps to nail the course. Then he went wide-open-throttle for 45 minutes! Can't be sure what he was thinking, but it seemed like "Happy happy! Joy joy!"
There's a guy who has over 1,000 toys for his collie, and not only does the dog know the names of all of them - he can do specific actions to each one based on the verb the owner uses.
@@bradleyboyer9979 That’s Chaser! Both him and his owner have passed away but they were quite the pair.
Amazing dog no doubt, but the master giving the orders is the give and take going on too.
Wow, that dog responds very quickly to his master's commands. Great team!
And never misses to praise doggy for the good work
That dog is having the time of his life! They live for this stuff.
1000%
Come to think about it: What "stuff" do I/we live for? It's time to reconnect with reality and the outdoors.

That's amazing how courageous are these dogs as well. Thanks for sharing.
Nothing better than watching a dog do what he loves. Got to see it live in Scotland. They are SOOOO happy when they get the job done
Yup. It's what they live for!
Border Collies are the best. My girl, Murphy, was so smart, gentle, always wanting to please. She was definitely my canine soulmate. Forever in my heart.
My Riley was the best friend I've ever had. I love(d) him more than anyone else in my life.
Infinite love, absolute devotion…soulmate my Woofie,,
Cattle are much harder for a dog to herd than sheep. Cattle’s nature is to challenge the predator. Dog and handler did extremely well.
Amazing interaction...and great confidence and courage.
Wonderful calm and supportive communication.
I love that at the end when you say he is done, he looks back like "Are you sure you don't want me to herd them a little more?" He loves his job.
I had to keep reminding my Border Collie that the main reason she couldn't drive my car (or rule the world) was because she didn't have opposing thumbs. That logic either worked or else she was just very compassionate with me....
Good job, Hendrix!
Rock on!
One of the smartest breeds in existence today. Loved watching this working dog do his stuff.
Pretty sure it's been confirmed multiple times that border collies are **the** smartest breed. Just amazing dogs!

I think you'll find a lot of agreement there.
What fine job you and your pup done! So special to watch from my easy chair. Thank you for sharing!
Love the final command "That'll do" !
I admire the dog's control. He knows how to be aggressive, but maintain his distance so as not to get hurt.
Both are definitely key! Heart and brains. Dogs without both don’t often go the distance
Border collies have very good depth perception its often hard to get a miss behaving one back on a leash cause they understand distance so well
We had a feisty angus cow that would turn and challenge our border collie. She had one calf and took a trip to the stockyards
Those are some rank wild ass bovines… the laddie has the heart of a 🦁LION 🦁
Great Boarder Collie & good work & this tiny but fierce guy broke their stand-off😜👍🏼
Heck, I am a city dweller ... I just learned that some of the farmer’s dialogue in the Babe movie ( piglet becoming “ sheep-pig”) is standard commands for border collies. “ That’ ll do.” I am enlightened. Jan 2022.
Ever seen "Babe" and "Awd Bob"? Same actor. He's the actor who played Zephram Cochran in "ST:8".
It amazes how a medium-sized dog can boss around a bunch of way larger animals! Like, how?
Loved the video! 💕
Instincts. For thousands and thousands of years, when cattle or other animals came upon these dog like creatures called wolves, they were killed. Survival instincts are so strong they are imprinted in our dna. That’s why we have a natural fear of large drop offs etc. it’s the because of the same reason that most cattle fear dogs or really most any other animals.
Depends--out here, that one dog would have been chased away, especially if the herd had calves--but when there's more than one dog, and they're hunting, they work to separate an animal from the herd. I think a herd has to have experience with a herding dog in order to remain that calm.
My grandpa's herd usually moved in 2 different groups. When we were young boys (brother and cousins) we called the pasture cows the "wild group", because they would even come after us...one was so bad, when she did come close to the house once, I remember her trying to fight through the chainlink fence to get at us. Grandpa never took his dogs around those cows even though his dogs wouldn't harm them. One of his dogs got loose once and tried to follow Grandpa's truck to the pasture--I thought they were going to kill him--they chased him until he gave up following the truck and ran back to the house.
That being said, one rainy night I heard a cow yelling in the front pasture for a good while. So I grabbed a flashlight and a rifle and headed out into the cold wet dark to find her--luckily she wasn't far. I found her fending off two wild dogs trying to get her very young calf, all by herself--at that time there weren't many cattle on the property. The dogs ran once I got involved and the cow followed me back up to the house--making sure her calf was between me and her. My grandmother had a habit of feeding stray dogs that people abandoned out here, so those two dogs we knew. It was a mama dog and her mostly grown pup. Because my grandmother would throw them scraps, they would come and hang around fairly close to the house. I saw that pup hanging out in a field that next morning and ended him...we hadn't had any trouble out of mama until he came along--so problem solved.
So yes, cows know dogs are a serious threat--but out here, they fight the threat...especially when they have calves.
If it looks like a wolf, it must be a wolf.
@@provisionalhypothesisYa, because there's no one alive today who isn't scared to death of heights. LMFAO.
@@provisionalhypothesis disagree with your last points...I doubt humans are even 500 years away from "decoding DNA"...just about 15 years ago they were telling everyone most codons are "junk DNA" and there was little to no concept of "epigenetics" ...in biology we are basically dealing with molecules acting as an interconnected system of logic gates...AND the system is open...the sheer immensity of the computations are far beyond our current abilities.
I've had Border Collies and they have the most intense stare. Kind of scary looking sometimes.
¡Qué gran perro! Entiende y sigue perfectamente las órdenes de su humano.
That’s a good doggo! A partnership that has existed since cavemen used wolves for hunting. Good people and good dogs go together like peanut butter and Jelly.

Dang... how is that dog able to walk around and lie down with a set of balls the size of which would put an elephant to shame? A good boy, indeed! :)
I love how even after he clocks out he keeps his eye on them lol
I know nothing of working dogs as in cattle work. I raised, trained and hunted over my National rated Golden Retriever his name was 18 Carat Yellow Gold, son of XX Top Brass Cotton. I put huge time, energy and cash into that dog and was rewarded many times over by an outstanding hunter, pet and companion for myself and family. He would take hand, whistle and verbal commands. Dam especially fine dog. Your dog seems very much like he was, he appears to enjoy his work as mine did. Thank you for sharing! Memories from many years ago flooded back to me, your was an excellent video to watch!!!

"Just try me, strip steak."
"Maybe I'll just go around you?"
"No you won't. You'll go that way, like I said."
"....."
"....."
"I'm going that way, but not because you threatened me."
"No, of course not. Have a nice day."
So much patience with the owner and dog. Not one bark from the dog.
Eye control, not barks. Ever been stared at-while you've been eating-by a BC? Don't be conned into giving up your breakfast!
that dog has bravery running through its veins
Border Collies (most, but not all), are born with that. They call it having "The Eye". It's the dog's natural ability to "stare down" and hold the fear/respect of the livestock without flinching and without harming them, and imposing their handler's will for them to move in a certain direction.
sambo likes to do that...sges acculy 8 years old know, born chrismas of 2013,,,and f this new key bord on this phone

The cattle were like oh no there’s that bossy creature again, he’s got SO many issues”! 😂.
Amazing. How long to train the dog? thanks for the upload
GREAT video...I've had several Border"line"Collies ( rescued from pounds) that were smart, fun, & full of piss & vinegar ....good buddies!
It's interesting watching how different herding breeds operate. Border Collies move livestock with their presence, "the eye" (stare), and I swear their telepathic "will". Not as much physical pressure or aggression as Australian Cattle Dogs (Red/Blue Heelers) for example, who push and nip a lot. I suppose it's the difference between moving sheep and cattle.
My niece has a Blue Heeler girl named Lily. I hope she doesn't try to herd Bailey, Patti's daughter, that way!
@@virginiaconnor8350 haha! Hope not, although Border Collies are famous for herding little kids (and ducks, chickens, cats, etc.). Not sure if Heelers do. I know they sure nip a lot!
After watching this my dogg is the second best dogg in the whole wide world.
I need one already trained lol !!! Please my cattle are rouge lol .

Such a well trained doggo. You only had to practically whisper the commands and he obeyed without the slightest hesitation.
This breed lives for this job. Great to see pup pup living his best life!
My Riley used to try and herd me when I took him with me on bike rides. He'd sprint out ahead and cut in front of me, making me swerve or hit the brakes. My girlfriend thought he was a bully but I knew that she was just jealous that Riley could make me move but she couldn't!
Lol the cows clearly want to go the other direction. Dogo worked in the freezing cold and wet. Awwww
What a good boy. He is thoroughly enjoying himself. This is what these dogs were bred for. Not good apartment dogs. They need to be doing something. I used to have a german shepherd and he escaped the backyard a couple of times and we would find him at the neighbors herding his sheep. xD
What a disciplined young man this dog is.

Wow. So impressive.
Great dog and team work! Just curious - what makes the buffaloes afraid of the dog? What IS the psychology of the buffaloes that the border collie is manipulating?
I think the stare looking decisive, and the fact that the dog reaction is 3x than the cows
Wow, I’m in love!!!❤
I can barely get my spoiled dog to sit.
The dog did exactly as he was told, except the one time when it didn't make any sense. A "walk on" when the cattle were close to counter-attacking. Instead the dog went back and got himself some space for a new intimidation attempt. Good dog.
Yep a great working border collie will know when to disobey absolutely
Looks like the new Tough Mudder champ! Great pooch!
Border Collies are the best. Another great British gift to the world!
the difference between guardians dog and a herding dog
Yo why don’t he just teach the cows to walk on and all that?
So cute
Very stubborn cattle... good job..👍
These dogs are so freaking amazing! How does one even begin to train these magnificent K9s?
Canines here. K9s are police dogs. It's odd that cats have canine teeth and my Border Collies had cat feet! My Gem girl liked to watch Border Collies herd sheep and got excited when thry jumped on the backs of a line of sheep to get from the back to the front of that group. I wish I had Tess identify all her toys like Chaser did or show off like Skidboot, a Blue Heeler mix did, but Tess preferred to herd: hens, chipmunks, squirrels, an opossum, children, (and me occasionally).
