Cattle drive with Hendrix the border collie
Hendrix is a ( year old border collie that successfully competes at the highest level in both sheep and cattle dog competitions (USBCHA, MSSA, NCA).
But he also is ready, willing and able to put in a full days work anytime and anywhere without skipping a beat.
This video chronicles a day where Hendrix helped gather, drive, sort and load a herd of Charolais cows and their calves. Including pushing the herd more than 20km+.

Hendrix stepped up in a big way in round 2 of the 2023 CBCA Championships at Grass Creek Park in Kingston. On a day when many good teams were running into trouble with the Waupoo Sherp, he had their number. A fantastic run helped secure a ticket to the Double Lift Finals.

Hendrix had really nice control and precision with his sheep and we were on our way to a nice fast time but sadly we did not get our pen. Hopefully tomorrow we’ll put all the pieces together!
8 month old border collie sheepdog: full training session
Переглядів 395Рік тому
This is an unedited, full training session with Lennon. He was 1 week shy of being 8 months old in this video. Lennon loves to work and learn and is developing into a surprisingly good natured, but passionate, little partner. He demonstrates some of his best listening to date in this session while working on balancing sheep to me, digging sheep out of corners, taking lie downs, flanking and eve...
58 Second Run at the 2023 Cache Valley Classic (MSSA Open Sheep)
Переглядів 293Рік тому
Hendrix and I laid down a sub 1-minute run in round 2 at this trial to take 2nd place (behind a mind melting 53 second run by Jeff Meyers) in Logan Utah. Thank you to the MSSA for putting on a great event with both cattle and sheep.
1st Place Run (Open cattle) at the 2023 Cache Valley Classic Stock Dog Trial

After just an ok run the day before in round 1, Hendrix and I brought the heat in round 2 with this run. Hendrix kept his cattle nice while also moving them with good authority and it helped us snag 1st place in a highly competitive class of 20 very strong dogs and handlers.

This was Hendrix's run at the 2023 National Western Stock Show Sheep Dog Trial in Denver Colorado. He kept his sheep very calm and laid down an ultra precise run. Was very proud of how he managed his sheep here.
Lennon working cattle (6 month old border collie)
Переглядів 449Рік тому
After a two brief on-leash exposures when he was 4 months old, Lennon got to work cattle for the first time off leash this week. Here he is working on his balance and control of heavier, tougher cattle - it’s far from perfect but at 6 months he’s doing a great job of moving his stock. They certainly are convinced he is worth listening to.

Hendrix and I had a solid run in round 2 of the Cache Cattle Challenge in Logan, Utah. With a full point run in 2:21 we ended up 2nd out of 29 teams.
Border collie pup (5 months) working sheep in a round pen
Переглядів 447Рік тому
Lennon was around 5 months old in this video, and here he is working in a round pen on a few sheep. As a dog with a lot of forward and natural confidence, we were working on flanks and "balancing" sheep to me in this video so that he could learn where and how to move to keep the sheep following me (his handler). Overall, some really nice moments and work from Lennon in this video. A lot of folk...
6 month old border collie training to be a sheep dog
Переглядів 705Рік тому
Lennon turned 6 months old today. To celebrate, in this video he’s getting to train on developing his skills as he continues to work toward being a future stock dog (sheep, cattle, goats etc). He has a lot of forward and desire, so in this video we’re really working on helping him develop some “rate” or pace to his work. Basically helping him get more confident pushing his stock calmly without ...
Herding goats with a border collie
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Рік тому
In this video Hendrix demonstrates fetching one group of goats, a “look back” outrun over an electro net fence to retrieve a second group of goats, and a “dog-leg fetch” through a gap in that fence to combine the herd. In this video you’ll see (hopefully) why a well trained and bred border collie is the ultimate partner when it comes to calmly and efficiently moving even tricky livestock like g...

Hendrix pushing 200 sheep to graze leafy spurge
Why are the cattle in that mud? Where is their pasture?
Giving more orders than I would give in driving 350 mad merino wethers 5 miles. Good dogs do not need this many orders. Possibly, this dog does not need these orders. Maybe the human needs to give them. If you have a good dog, let it get things done.
Bravo! Gar nicht so einfach - Hühner sind eigen. Er lässt ihnen genau so viel Platz, damit sie nicht in Panik auseinander stieben, scheint sogar die Hackordnung zu kennen... Danke!
Chickens are so cool😂 Hard work, good training.
O. M. G. 😳😱
😊Nice farm ••job••dog••chicken••and you the orderer ❤.
I was at that trial. The announcer behaved strangely over the microphone. She shared too many personal details about her life, said an obscene expression, and make weird noises over the microphone. I had to report all that to the assistant supervisor of special events. You don’t swear over the microphone at a family event. The only time I spoke to the announcer was when I asked her where the bathroom was.
I'm sorry that you had that experience. The announcer was several different people over the course of the trial so i'm not sure which individual made the comments you were referring to, but I am sure they will keep it in mind the next time they were at the microphone. Hope you enjoyed your time at the event otherwise!
@@jordanm563 I won’t tell you the bad words she said, but the name of the announcer that day was the trails chair, Amanda Milliken. She remembers me asking where the washroom was. The big problem I had there is my learning ability. I learn visually, that means I can’t learn by listening to someone bantering over the microphone. To me, it felt like I entered a confusing university lecture. The assistant supervisor understands how I felt, she wasn’t happy at Milliken either. I may not want to return next year.
That'll do, Hendrix. 😍
GOOD LAD !!
Clever boy - that's amazing at 12 weeks old 😲
Il border collie è una creatura fantastica, un grande compagno di vita, coraggioso, tenace, allegro, vivace non ha bisogno della parole capisce tutto con lo sguardo.
Thanks for the chance to see your way of life. The scenery, the dogs, the cattle, and some great music choices… 👌🏼💜
Awesome breed^^
Go team Rock n"Roll !!!
Thank you!!
This stealthy pose is so rare to see on a canine. Pretty awesome stuff.
This demonstrates something about the intelligence of chicken: they know the difference between a dog and an actual predator and try to not give a damn and go about their own business.
So neat, way to go team!
Yay, boys!👍💜🇺🇸
Damn, those sheep were dastardly!
Notice how the border collie never once, even looks down and worries about the filth he has to keep sitting in? Lol, that would be what I'd be thinking - "God, I'm so filthy and still have to keep herding these cows, ugh." He's a better dog that I'd be lol!
Amazing dog, 110% efficiency
It’s easier to train chickens to come on call😅

Well, got new goals for my pup. I want to train him to herd and protect a small flock of chickens. This proces it can be done. He needs a job, he keeps trying to jerd deer and elk.
The Collie must dominate the cow(s); otherwise it cannot herd them. The Collie weighs a meager 35 to 40 pounds and the cows 1200 pounds - no contest. The dog wins over the cow ONLY by attitude and intelligence. The dog will not take "no" for an answer; and the cow must clearly see that, and won't think of challenging it! I have seen a younger (not experienced) Collie the cow he was herding DID challenge the dog, and chased it away. The Irish farmer who owned the dog laughed and said it was inexperienced, and it did not have "the eye" yet. Apparently not all Borders learn this!!!
Wow amazing even the chickens🎉🎉❤
So cute ❤
Wow! Great work!
ohh los orgasmos for ears. dat wind is los awesomos. i wish there will be a place in dehell where such vvvvideyo makers will sit and just listen to their wind recorded sounds. ever and ever. ogein and ogein.
He is taking his job so seriously ❤Border collies are the best ❤❤
Sheep mostly will run ahead, cattle want to confront the dog.great dog.
This dog would work himself sick if you let him. What a fantastic drive these dogs have. It’s easy to see why they need a job to do. Otherwise they truly suffer with frustration and restlessness and become destructive. Thanks for sharing the session.
Our Border Collie cannot run with our chickens because he chases them too hard and can hurt or kill them. He's not a work dog and the chickens are just pets but he disrespects them and runs too hard at them. At 50 lbs with incredible strength and speed he would never get tired of chasing them so his penalty is that he is tied up during the day while they run inside our 50X50 foot enclosure. @ around 4:30 PM they go into their area so we can lock them in and he gets to run free all night. I'm so jealous watching this.
Good job.
Amazing
Congratulations!
Go, dog! 💜
Great work!
When we get property I'm thinking about getting a border collie. After training them, will I have to be outside all the time with them and the chickens? Wondering how much stimulation they need
A well trained border collie should be one you can leave alone outside on your property -- provided the livestock you've trained them to work aren't loose and they have been taught to leave your animals alone when you're not out there with them.
Is there any training info you can give me? I'm trying to train mine with chickens but she ends up chasing them if I leave her alone with them. She's 3 months old
3 months old is quite young to start trying to work chickens with. At that age most border collies are just in the early days of their training, and tougher livestock (like chickens who do not naturally flock well) are probably best kept until your dog has built a lot of confidence and training under your watchful eye. I would suggest starting with some easier sheep or a nice group of goats to build their confidence, discipline and listening skills before tackling chickens.
It’s going to be enjoyable watching Lennon grow and learn.
Definitely very excited for what he's shown so far -- still young but he loves to learn, is very forward and surprisingly sensible for his age!
Good stuff
Was watching online! Way to go!
Thank you for watching! And for the support as always!
I agree. He kept the sheep calm and together. Amazing work! 💜
Thank you Diane, very kind of you
Amazing!! 💛
Good stuff
I’m no expert, but that looked like a fine bit of teamwork to me. I’ll leave the hair splitting to the judges. 💜
Just wanted to say that your training is top notch. Hendrix is an exemplary example of his breed, but it takes two in sync to do this job. My respect and gratitude for your tremendous connection.
That is very kind of you. I'm also happy to say we have both improved a lot since this video was taken. Thank you for watching and for your kind words.
Yeah good dog , cows and cakes are a good test for a dog. I’ve had border collies and kelpies. I don’t make them lie down when they’re in the action like that, they can get smashed easier.
What amazing instincts + training at only 5 months! 👍
