I've listened to a lot of her stuff, and noticed that too, that when she was very young, usually her color was more tremolo than vibrato, though even then sometimes there was more true vibrato coming through than other times. With voice, it's really the response of the vocal chords to variation in airflow from the diaphragm that produces vibrato, which I suppose demands a complicatedly selective relaxed state in connected tissues of the throat. Maybe some days she was more able to produce that state. Still, she had remarkable diaphragm control for a relatively untrained youngster. As she grew older, her vibrato became more effective; in fact she soon was apparently able to control both amplitude and frequency, to suit a piece of music, add expression, or match that of a duet partner.
