I recently had a coil spring break while parked. Car has 148k miles and live in the Northeast, road salt is taking its toll. I ended up buying a pair of used struts off a 40k mile car and swapped them out. It was easier and cheaper than dealing with taking the strut apart.

What is the purpose of this operation? Do these mounts break? AS far as I see it is a simple steel support. No bearing, and the single wear item is the rubber bushing. And that is not replaced, the old one is still used. So what would be the benefit of doing this?
Thank you for the tutorials, very useful hands-on information!

Thank you for the feedback! These mounts can wallow out. A replacement is made to avoid backlash in the shock absorber and spring operation. Best Regards, Autodoc

Ok, dissassembled the one on my car while changhing the springs/shocks.
It seems that the mount has a rubber bushing in the interior which allows for the shock bar to twist under the load of the spring/car without bending.
I guess this could wear out and cause knocking.

HI, I have w215 cl500, and did not pass warrant of fitness because mechanich says when car is jacked up there is 10mil movement up and down. is it not normal for hydralic struts? problem is he wants me to replace upper strut bush mount, but on cl500 it can not be replaced only if entire strut. Could you please confirm if 10mil up down movement of wheels when jacked up is ok?

      Thank you for your comment.
The shock-absorber has a course of a suspension bracket, and it is normal that the wheel goes when lifting the car, but unfortunately, we have not seen the whole situation, so we recommend consult with your mechanic and understand the reason for replacement.

How can you tell if the strut mounts need replacement? Is there a way to test it?

    • @autodocuk

Thank you for your feedback ! When worn, strut mount сomes loose, an alien sound appears. You can also detect wearing visually, if a shock absorbing part of the mount starts to get micro-crackled. Best regards, Autodoc.

@@patf8845 Hi Pat .. well let me try to explain..I purchased the e500 as a rebuilder it barely made the thunk sound if when driving Over time it became louder . I have maybe 40 videos on it the car has arnaught struts my mechanic said it was the front left strut that was making the clunk i was doubting it how ever i found one by chance at local pick apart in the process of changing I purchased a new swaybar link as well, mind you everything else had been changed except that (sway bar link ) my mechanic would push down on front right and here clunk my suspicions where that it was the sway bar link because in the ground the strut is under pressure but the sway bar link isn't when the car is in the air on a jack the sway bar link is under pressure and the strut isn't ... In the end after switching those two parts out it seems to have cured the rattle thunk .. my conclusion is that it was the sway bar link from the begining I have one particular video when my wife is pulling into gas station and right at the beging of drive way you here a rattle thunk she's moving at 1mph so that was my ultimate decision maker ... Hope this helps if your cars a Merc

Really, Tightening the shock mount to the shock with an airgun?! You realize that you can loosen the internal nut of the shock resulting in a knocking noise. Conversely, if it tightens the internal nut, the shim stack will compress resulting in the incorrect damping rate. Ask bilstien or monroe what they think about using an airgun to tighten the top shock nut.
