    i'm committed to uchicago for class of 2024 and i'm hyped :) i just wish it had more name brand recognition in the general public... like despite being a top 10 university most people think it's a state school XD

      JustAHugeNerd Yep! Esp to those not in the US I think it feels more like a state school rather than a ~Ivy League +5~ anyhow, hopefully this changes!

    U of C alum....got a grad degree in Education and psych. ...Had no idea what I wanted to study but I got a full fellowship in education and psych. When I registered for classes I asked the Dean( my advisor) what courses were required...he said none, except my thesis course. He told me I could take any course in any department as long as I could justify it towards my thesis. Here is where Chicago’s different from all other schools: it will probe your brain and make you think and question for life. There are no cookie-cutter students at Chicago...they prize individualism and daring to be different. Good luck Chloe and all....it changed my life.

    Hey Chloe, I hope that you're doing well! I'm very much in a similar position because I got into stanford and cambridge to study land econ(econ,law and environ scie). Right now I'm leaning more towards Cambridge, mostly due to the fees being 1/2 of what stanford wants and with the economic uncertainty right now going to Cambridge would mean that I would have 0 debt and could go in a few years to do a mba at stanford. Yet I don't know whether this is the right decision to make as I feel like I would be loosing so many opportunities, I mean stanford is loaded and in some way translates its endownment to its students (just as an example, they offer summer internship grant support of $7500, cambridge you would struggle to get $300) and tbh stanford has got such good marketing and inclusive PR whereas Cambridge doesn't even bother... do you think that declining the stanford offer would negatively affect me in terms of job prospects and generally career? Going to Cambridge for undergrad would allow me to get the best of both worlds, whereas the stanford bachlors would give me a great 4 years but most probably not much more. I'd be more than thankful for any type of advice.

      Filip Novakovic Thank you so much for sharing your experience and sharing all this information! This is just my personal feel, but from what it sounds like I feel like you would benefit a LOT more from Stanford than Cambridge. One of the reasons I think UK colleges cost less is also because there are less resources readily available for all students (i.e. at UChicago I could just go to the art department and get loaned very expensive professional film making equipment despite being an econ major, or dabble in healthcare or medicine careers, while at Oxford those would not be open to me because I would be restricted to one major). I think one thing you need to think about along with student life is also where you would want to be post-college, mainly UK vs. US. I would say that Stanford is a more exclusive school than Cambridge (no hate, this is just my opinion), and I think that if you want a holistic experience that is also pre-professional, Stanford might be your way to go. I think the main cons to Stanford would be the culture (also referred to as the “Cali culture” in general I think, people being more gunner-like and overachieving and there is more social pressure to excel in academics as well as socially), but I think regardless of all that the resources available and the possibilities are endless! Stanford professors are also famous for pulling students into startups, getting lots of business experience, and that might be a good place for you given environmental science + econ combination - for law, idk if this applies to you, but I also think depending on where you get your law degree you can only practice in that country/region - so be careful where you pick for graduate school! In sum, I would pick Stanford in your shoes, and for me it would be a much easier decision than between UChicago and Oxford :)))) - Best of luck and let me know how it goes!!

      Cambridge! I think that after return to the us you will be seen as a courageous and more interesting for future employers as you did something as crazy as moving at the other end of world in order to gain a one of the best education out there. You will probably also get to know the Uk’s and European economy much better than at Stanford and I would take it as a huge advantage. Moving back to us to do master at Stanford sounds wonderful and of course that decision is up to you ;)

      Hi!So nice see find a landec co-fan of Chloe. I'm a current first yr landec at Pem so do lemme know if it will be helpful for you if we had a chat and I can share the real student life/acadmic life at cam, as LE is unbelievably dense with constitutional law, real estimate etc. Drop me an email at keyi0903@hotmail.com if you want, but either way congrats on getting both amazing offers and (persoanlly) would love to welcome you to choose cam:)))

    Oxford's culture just seemed a lot more like a bubble
    when I was there as like an international student
    Asian
    everyone there was white
    some were British some were French
    some of them were from continental Europe
    and most of them were British and
    they were all very elite obviously

    Hi Chloe! I saw you using an electric skateboard on campus in one of your videos. I’m an incoming freshman and I want to know what is your experience with your skateboard?

    • @asynchloe
      @asynchloe  4 роки тому +2

      Lawrence Chen HAHA I shot a video about my boosted board but never really got a chance to post it / edit it - tbh I love it! I live off campus (15-20min walk away), and on my skateboard its around 5 minutes average, 3.5 if I push it and go fast. The pros are that its fast, its easy to learn and be good at, if you lock it outside with the bikes you don’t have to carry it around much, and it also doubles as like a way to get to the metro/The Point for me (plus its v cool and can be a mini gymbal for vlogging). Cons are that its expensive, and though it works in the rain and snow, if the roads are icy you have to go decently slow if you want to be extra careful. Hope this helps!!

    • @asynchloe
      @asynchloe  4 роки тому +2

      Math Vault hmmm tough question - I think my take on UChicago and the Dean is that it will come down to whether other schools will be online; don’t think UChicago will take the lead and be online, but if others (probably more elite schools too) decide to be online, it will be as well. According to the latest email, sounds like the final decision will come out in June, so sit tight!

    I still haven't been able to figure out why the two finalist schools were Oxford and UChicago. Philosophically, they are nearly opposites(in terms of Chloe's major) - Oxford is Keynesian/Tory and Chicago is libertarian. Were you familiar with the "Chicago School" and their much talked about Nobel Prize winners? I can see the match between Singapore or Taiwan(hope that isn't a trigger for a Chineses student) with Oxford, but not Chicago School libertarianism ; maybe on the business side with Singapore, but not with China's Communist Party ideology. Granted, Shanghai is more marked oriented than Beijing - what is that old line about the Emperor being far away? - but, I'm surprised you wouldn't have considered another school besides UChicago in the US. The elite universities econ departments on the (US) coast tend to be labeled "saltwater" and around the Great Lakes as "freshwater" in reference to their differences on market vs government advocacy.Based on the chosen sites you follow in the COVID-19 video, I would guess a liberal bent.

    • @faisalbhabha5371

      None of this really matters for an undergraduate degree. Both schools are going to give you a top-class education. Maybe the best two in the world for undergrad economics. Neither uni are as one-dimensional as you suggest either. As a current UChicago student, I can report that the school is most certainly not on the whole libertarian, especially if you go outside of economics. Remember that UChicago undergrads don't declare a major until very late in the degree, so you don't ever take that many courses within one department.
