I really wanted a school with an academic atmosphere (which is why my dream school is uchicago) but I guess that comes with the whole competition thing that I don’t like at all
You might be more suited to an LAC (liberal arts college!) Smaller colleges tend to be less competitive (though some still are) -- though I guarantee you, every single university is very competitive if you go into certain areas or clubs! I think that UChicago is much less competitive than most elite academic schools, esp since those schools are competitive socially as well as academically!
@@b.mekonnen4024 Honestly WashU, Princeton, and Dartmouth are all great for that kind of atmosphere. Very rigorous, but with very collaborative students and teachers.
Yikes at the racial profiling! I know it’s a universal problem but to hear that this opinion is so predominant within the university is quite depressing :( glad you addressed this! And lmao yeah #7 always the privileged person who plays devil’s advocate and doesn’t know when to stop being a contrarian debater.
I’m an incoming first year at UChicago and I found this video (and the one about what you love about UChicago) really helpful! That being said both r kind of what I imagined going into the college! I will say I think the racial profiling is a huge issue in international communities. As someone growing up in the US (my parents are Indian immigrants), i think/hope UChicago students in the US have a good grasp on what it means to be racially profiled, understand issues like red lining, and know that racial profiling (especially of black people) is a huge problem. However, my parents natural instinct is to be more wary of the area because it’s predominantly black even though the have been here for many years. Additionally, my dad went to BOOTH school for his MBA many many years ago so my Indian grandparents have visited south side Chicago. They also tell people in India that it’s dangerous because of the black people and that all the black people in south side are sketchy and that they have had scary experiences. This makes me sad but it’s hard to change the mentality they are raised with. I’m just trying to see how I can help international students form India understand that this is not the situation in Chicago. Sorry for this long monologue (that is poorly worded) but I agree that from what I have seen w/o even entering the college- the international community has a warped perception of the south side and the black community. Anyways thanks for ur videos and hope to run into you on campus!
I don't know if I'll be able to personally visit these colleges and I don't know anyone who attends any college as first-generation, so I just want to say thank you for these videos. You talk very clearly and it's very informative (: Really helping me out as an upcoming senior during this pandemic and helping me decide where I should apply.
"dismissive listening" - that's beautiful. It persists in alumni, only more so. Chicago is the most segregated American city I know. Not only are the tensions everpresent, with a heavy, ugly vibe, but Hyde Park is a special circumstance that requires a kind of split thinking I haven't seen since I used to meet white South Africans in apartheid days. I've never seen tension like I have across the counters on the U of C campus where the cashier is fully aware of the race war happening all around and the student ordering food is not. Of course the racism is wrong. Of course the inequities are staggering and wrong. And the people who are telling you to race-profile are also trying to save your life. For kids who show up with no prior exposure to explosively racist, segregated areas with stupendous wealth disparities from one street to the next, it's the starkest way that they can warn you. Fwiw, nearly everyone south of 62nd (or west of Cottage Grove) will protect you by leaving you in a bubble because they know you have no idea what you're doing. They don't want trouble, and you are trouble. You're unlikely to get hurt just walking around. Even so, those are neighborhoods you shouldn't be wandering around without the street smarts to read what's going on. When things change, they'll probably have nothing to do with you, but you don't want suddenly to be in the middle of someone else's trouble that you don't know how to react to. tl;dr: UChicago has a police force like that for a reason. Only some of it has to do with suburban parental racism and fear. I'm trying to come up with an equivalent...this isn't quite, but when I was a bit younger than you I went to Belfast in the midst of the Troubles to have a look around. On my own. Actual likelihood of my getting hurt there: small. In fact I got invited to a party almost straightaway. But it was also genuinely dangerous, not least because of how oblivious I was to my surroundings, and I'm fortunate to be here writing this to you. Otoh, if you want to learn about America, you're right there in it in concentrated form. To live in Chicago is to get a fast, deep education in every important societal tectonic rift we have, and the people there are well-educated in these things. I don't go to any other city where I can go get my hair cut, wind up in a complex conversation about prison justice for black and brown people, and that's been a totally normal thing for as long as I've known the place. There's a reason the city riots and protests so well, and why its photojournalism is so good. Don't spend so much time with the Nobelists that you miss what the city itself has to teach.
As an Asian-American immigrant, I would not tell incoming freshmen to avoid Black people. I would tell them to get to know Black people and Black heritage so that you can embrace the community and the community will embrace you. As in any situation where you are a guest in a different culture, the worst thing you can do is isolate yourself.
You should check out Thomas Sowell, specifically his book Knowledge and Decisions, if for no other reason, just because he’s a Chicago alum. Many of your gripes sound like they could be with any multi cultural/racial country. There’s plenty of racism in Singapore against Maylays, it just doesn’t manifest the same way as it does in the United States because we’re a gun culture and we have horrible stains on our history. Thomas Sowell really tries to give you a frame work for how to think about these issues and reconcile your world view with the truth of the world. Really great reading.
Anywhere you go , you should have situational awareness. Just notice where you are and what’s going on. If you feel like you are in danger, just pivot and change your direction. Or stop someone and talk to them. I agree about just listening to others. It can be helpful when an individual knows you are giving ear to their current situation.
Hey Chloe! Based on your videos, I have noticed that Uchicago is pretty competitive, where people are always comparing themselves to others. I am wondering if you think this competitiveness is because of your major (economics), or do you see this competitiveness in other majors? Love your videos btw!!!
Hi there!! this competitiveness is definitely more an econ major thing - specifically for competitive RSOs (like business clubs and consulting clubs); other competitive majors such as pre-med are also prevalent, but majority of majors are not very competitive! -
Can I just say... your room is gorgeous! Also my family and I will be doing a self guided tour on Monday and I was wondering would it be safe to just walk around the campus and a little outside it in day time without having to worry? Because you mentioned being careful especially at night
for sure! especially around campus -- UChicago has a blue light system where every street corner on campus there's a security guard + a pole-like structure with a button to press if you feel uneasy or in danger or would like assistance! The daytime is 1000% fine, walking around alone in the nighttime is just unsafe everywhere
Hi! As an incoming junior who's top choice is UChicago, I absolutely love your videos! I am planning on majoring in a STEM field and being a pre-med, so what do you think of the culture there? A lot of pre-meds at every college are hella toxic and competitive so I'm relatively prepared for that, but do you think UChicago's pre-med program is overly competitive?
Thank you! Quick question: do you know what the lgbtq+ community is like at UChicago? I’m in the Bible Belt rn and so I can’t really be myself here, but I was wondering how accepting UChicago is of people in that community.
HAHAH i remember it was somewhat of a struggle for me too 😅 my parents were very worried but one thing that helped was that they were in a uchicago parents chat, and after listening to other parents / alumni talking about their experience they realised it's more of a "USA" thing than a "uchicago" thing, and that plus the fact that the other good universities I wanted to go to were all located in similar regions (Yale is in new haven, which i believe has one of the highest murder rates in the US, or Columbia which is located near Harlem and also a predominantly black neighbourhood like South side chicago) and so they still constantly tell me to be safe, but have definitely opened up to it!!
also one big thing I did (which isn't for everyone for I really didn't mind) was that I installed Life360 on my phone, which allows them to see where I am at all times! Our agreement was that if they can see where I am, they wouldn't question it or restrict my movements based on it (not that they would anyways) --- so in that way it makes them feel safe, but also gives me peace of mine! So when I'm out at 3am at least they know where I am and when I go home for the night etc :))
I've been fortunate enough to be around Ivy and Patriot League (Lehigh, Lafayette, Colgate, Bucknell, Holy Cross, Army, Navy etc.) schools my entire life thanks to family ties and athletics. I don't believe all of those school's quirks combined add up to the UChicago experience. Such a fascinating institution....
Hi Chloe. First I want to say that I really enjoy your videos. I wanted to ask if there's a difference between economics majors and business economics major.
for sure!! more details on the website but business econ is one of the specialisations within the economics major -- the requirements are different (most notably very low math requirements, and you don't need to take 3 extra mandatory classes other econ majors do) and you also can take more booth electives!
the competition is 10000%. From what I've heard, UChicago is not competitive at all compared to some of these schools. I've heard active sabotage stories from Berkeley, Penn, and Columbia, not including those about a much more pressurised social life as well -- at uchicago some clubs are competitive, the classes are hard, but students are v friendly and it's more of an open competition than behind your back one!
Hey chloe I was wondering, how hard is it to get access to resources at uchicago? Since the environment is competitive, is it hard to get a study abroad program you like or an internship or anything along those lines? Especially for non Econ majors
Its not very competitive to get resources! for lab and research opportunities, UChicago has many more resources than students to fill them --- it's competitive for econ majors because everyone wants specific firms (sometimes for no good reasons) and they only offer like 100 seats to universities across the US! -- study abroad programs (depend on language; like the paris one and Hk one is quite popular) but generally are not difficult to get into! I would say treks & externships & job shadowing at uchicago is also plentiful and not competitive for all majors!!
Well, I can’t believe I’m watching this, I don’t think I know a single person from my age from my area have even thought about trying to get into U Chicago, I enjoyed this because I enjoy learning and empathizing, and I guess as you say getting out of my bubble. I’m not sure if this is my preparation phase or something but I’m trying to find where I could go down In life. I got a 2.31 gpa based on my circumstances , then a 3.71, then a 4.0 and now I’m enrolled in my second fall semester especially during this obvious pandemic. Honestly, what do you think should be my next move? I really am not sure anymore what my next move or plan can be. Should I stay in college? Should I take a break and pursue music production? Life right. I have the balls to pursue what I want. I can do it. But smartly, should I get my degree right now. I know Pharrell has / earned his degree, and even read a speech to students. I’m not from a place that are able to give me answers that I would want to here. Also, I’m a first gen American form my immigrant parents who barely know my environment I grow in / English logic. What do you think??
Racial profiling is a pretty interesting thing. obviously it is morally wrong. You have mentioned the idea that social and economic class is more important than race, but it is also a statistical fact that black people are poorer overall due to systematic racism and historic oppressions. Imo ones social economic class is hard to tell just from looking and racial profiling might be a way for someone to do that?
NOT THE "BUT IM JUST PLAYING THE DEVILS ADVOCATE HERE...." it's the worst when ur talking about ur real lived experience and they're like "well i just think..."
Real lived experience is one source of data. There are other sources of data. For a comprehensive understanding of historical events, one should have multiple data sources. Having real lived experience only is insufficient. It doesn't make one's thoughts truth-ful. For example, many Chinese have a lot to say about Zhou Enlai, because he was an icon and they lived during his time. However, the fact of the matter is that writings of Zhou have not been declassified, and we simply have insufficient evidence to make substantive historical claims about him. The most intellectually honest position is curiosity and doubt.
Anohana, Toradora, and Your name. !! Do you have anime club in UChicago, are you in it? (Question from a anime fan who is looking forward to apply UChicago.)
Hi, Chloe, doesn’t high academic pressure & stress make you feel uncomfortable about going to U Chicago? I wouldn’t go there because of my dislike for too much homework and preference for more free time to enjoy parties & womanizing haha!!! If I were you, then I’d transfer to UCI or UCSB or UCSD and get a fantastic education without huge academic pressure and/or stress and enjoy parties and excellent sunny CA weather!!!
Haha well I do enjoy the work and grind! And I'll get into this more in my next video, but going to UChicago means you'll almost never be doubted for your ability and that's AMAZING -- and tbh uchicago nightlife on campus is p meh but off campus is good :) definitely more of a work hard play hard culture
itschloetan You and I are both different. I’m just as smart as the best Harvard or MIT students but chose an easy school because of my total dislike for heavy academic pressure & stress. But I regret that it wasn’t UCI or UCSB or UCSD but I’d go to one of these schools when given another chance to go back to college or university again. Right now, I’m more successful than most Harvard or MIT graduates because I’m a 50% owner of a company that sells products all over the world (similar to Bezos or Gates)!
Suthiraphan Assarat Mr. Assarat, I hope all is well. I am here to further inquire about your academic and career background. Unfortunately, I have done some extensive research about all of your prior claims. My research partners and I are left with some doubts about what, especially, you specialize in. We have browsed the entirety of the internet, talked to Mr. Google himself, and we are left with one pressing question. It has been weeks, MONTHS, and we cannot sleep. We have lost many hours of sleep for this, and blame you. Our blood, sweat and tears have gone into this. Our question is this: what is this mystery company that you own 50% of, one that you compare to the success of to Mr. Bezos, and Mr. Gates (respective trillionaire and billionaire, respectively), themselves. We are also aware of claims on your LinkedIn account that you are a renowned scrabble player, yet your wins only account for 40% of your overall gameplay. Care to explain? We anxiously await your response, on this sleepless, dreadful night. P. S. If you are reading this Khloe, congratulations on the beautifully edited video. Apologies in advance for any disturbance in your comment section this may cause. Kind regards, TBH
You are a very smart & intelligent lady...I love how you brought in some great points especially since you’re speaking from experience. Just to add this, and it doesn’t in any way relate to what I said above..and that is that, Jesus loves you! Do you believe in Him? Is He your Lord and Savior? If not, Jesus cares for you..you can call on Him today...open your heart and let Him come in and be your Lord and Savior...because God so loved this world, He sent Jesus to die for us so that whoever believes in Jesus will not perish but have eternal life...(John 3:16) I pray God bless you in Jesus’ name. Amen
"I don't want to scare anyone away from U Chicago." Ummm.... You paint a picture of a hyper-competitive college where students are constantly comparing and judging each other. Where students overwork themselves and are rewarded with bad grades in an unfair system. It's pretty bleak honestly.
It's only bleak if you view it negatively -- UChicago is competitive, but I think compared to other colleges that are much less academically rigorous, it's a kind of competition that I mostly like --- where students urge each other on and openly talk about events they should all do to make themselves better -- It's not comparing / judging each other negatively so much, the thing I don't like about Uchicago students is that we are very conscious of how other people perceive of (specifically people outside of uchicago but inside as well!) --- we should just do what it is we do best, and don't be so insecure. And if you'd like an environment where students do not overwork themselves or do not try their very best in subjects, I dare say that Uchicago & most elite colleges is definitely not the school for you! Career wise the most competitive are any school with a bushiness undergrad, ex. Berkeley Penn Columbia all famous for their 🐍; academics wise ex. MIT Stanford Caltech Swarthmore +aforementioned schools are all very difficult and competitive too! It's more about forging a good relationship with competition and turning it into motivation :)
Omg, you were talking about Bolsonaro? That’s interesting. I’m brazilian and honestly, he sucks lol. Here we call the “devil’s advocate” a “pessoa que milita errado”.
There is 1000s of $'s worth of drugs sold every hour within blocks of the Midway every day. This is a fact! Dangerous.. not sure but "keep your eye out for black people" says itschloetan. She needs to just stfu and live her life and not worry about what is going on outside of campus. Please read Devil in the White City by Erik Larson or better yet Depraved by Harlod Schechter :) For those of who don't know.. The reason why the Green Line L ends on 63rd and Cottage Grove and not turn all the way to 63rd and Stoney Island is because that thoroughfare used to be the hotspot for clubs, restaurants and jazz (Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie 'Bird' Parker, Sonny Rollins, etc..) and by the city removing the L between those 2 streets on 63rd they though it would remove the crime, etc... It may have worked but it now looks like the aftermath of a war zone..

What do you think??
is living here safe ( especially hoouse renting )
Did you apply as test-optional? Can you make a video about your admissions essay as well please?
The fact that you feel the need to explain that your ideas are your ideas is tremendously troubling in it's own right.
Not to mention that you had to repeat their own ideology back to them - "my experience as a minority woman is valid". Give me a break!
Racial profiling is a pretty interesting thing. obviously it is morally wrong. You have mentioned the idea that social and economic class is more important than race, but it is also a statistical fact that black people are poorer overall due to systematic racism and historic oppressions. Imo ones social economic class is hard to tell just from looking and racial profiling might be a way for someone to do that?
how are sports at the University ? I'm just wondering
Matea Thomas Their sports aren't the focus and so they aren't that great. Northwestern however has amazing sports
I was looking for this exact video!
A 75% grade at MIT is an A... Yikes...
yessssss gal!!
🥰🥰🥰
Actually as the video goes on you make some amazing points hahahah
I just got in and I already hate one thing: tuition.
NOT THE "BUT IM JUST PLAYING THE DEVILS ADVOCATE HERE...."
it's the worst when ur talking about ur real lived experience and they're like "well i just think..."
And I'll get into this more in my next video, but going to UChicago means you'll almost never be doubted for your ability and that's AMAZING -- and tbh uchicago nightlife on campus is p meh but off campus is good :) definitely more of a work hard play hard culture
itschloetan
You and I are both different.
Assarat,
I hope all is well.
P. S. If you are reading this Khloe,
congratulations on the beautifully edited video. Apologies in advance for any disturbance in your comment section this may cause.
Kind regards,
TBH
You are a very smart & intelligent lady...I love how you brought in some great points especially since you’re speaking from experience.
Just to add this, and it doesn’t in any way relate to what I said above..and that is that, Jesus loves you!
Do you believe in Him? Is He your Lord and Savior? If not, Jesus cares for you..you can call on Him today...open your heart and let Him come in and be your Lord and Savior...because God so loved this world, He sent Jesus to die for us so that whoever believes in Jesus will not perish but have eternal life...(John 3:16)
I pray God bless you in Jesus’ name.
It's more about forging a good relationship with competition and turning it into motivation :)
have u ever been robbed?
Nope! But I have had a friend who was standing alone on Garfield station in the evening and got robbed of his phone before getting onto a train

helllooo :)
dam you cute!
this girl is not smart enough for UChicago. There are 1000s of other schools to go to in the US. video is entertaining :) thanks @itschloetan
